@@thedocileme4321 Good ol' Neech has a tendency to make people depressed and nihilistic. AJ Soprano is a good fictional example of what happens when very young men read my friend, Neech. His work was a good help to me in my undergrad days, but until you see nihilism as a stepping stone toward belief in something real, then you will find yourself believing that Neech didn't see any point to believing in anything. My professor put it like this: "Nietzsche is the most misunderstood man who ever lived."
I haven't read much of Neitzche. I encountered "Neitzche - A Reader" in a physiotherapists waiting room. There I encountered someone who'd written many things I felt were reasonable conclusions or ponders, based on my knowledge and experiences at the time. This was someone who wrote down ideas, questions and assertions I had, during times of intellectual escapisms. I hadn't encountered philosophy before to be honest, just a mature student studying business management concepts as widely as possible with an openness to factual or experiential work; having a bad time in life and personally trying to conceive of a workable truth that eschewed religion, embraced science and explained culture around me and gave a way to find a pathway out. 😊
To be having health problems and still share your knowledge to us... You have touched me immensely. My eyes have been open to philosphy thanks to you work. May God bless you, teacher
Thank you Lord Sugrue you have been one of the top-5 most influential teachers in my young lifetime. Your work, integrity, and dedication will be cherished and revisited throughout my days. I wish you the best.
RIP Scholar! Now I understand why you died recently, you were sick for a while. May you rest now together with the great Philosophers you loved so much! ❤

Thank you Michael for making and posting these lectures. They have helped me immensely in my PhD-education in sociology. Today is the day of my defense. In one hour. Again, thank you.
I've always had a feeling Dr Sugrue appreciated Wittgenstein so it made me really happy to hear that he made it to the top three philosophers list. Thank you for sharing all those captivating insights, I hope that despite your disease you are doing well - your mind is as bright as ever.
I only came across this channel recently. As philosophy junkie these videos are a great course into the subject. Thank you and rest in peace Michael surgue.

This is just incomparable. I’ve never heard anyone make Nietzsche so accessible. I’m learning so much from these lectures it’s the best thing on RU-vid thank you
These and earlier lectures have been like a magic key for me. After listening to hundreds of philosophy podcasts on YT and reading some books, it's been this series that has simplified (but not dumbed down) complex theories (esp Kant!) in a stunningly articulate way. A thousand thanks for that, Il Professore.
Learning from you is such a treat. I tell people you are the greatest teacher I have ever known, so informative are your lectures. Every couple of years I would do a web search, hoping to find more of your amazing lectures Dr. Sugrue. For decades I was upset again and again, when Google and The Teaching Company gave me nothing new from your scholarship. So many great teachers of the teaching company have so sadly died. I cannot tell you how happy I was finding your channel on RU-vid. I have wanted to hear your brilliant lectures anew for a long time. I am sorry to hear of your illness. Please put as much online before you go as you can. And please give it to someone who will keep you online, for as long as we can have recordings of your amazing voice and mind in video lectures; our lives are inestimably richer.
Hello Sir Sugrue, I came here accidentally by surfing some blogs. I really appreciate the precious knowledge you share. In particular, I love to understand your worldview and the way you understand these famous people and explain them to us in a very comprehensible way. Thank you so much!
Go check out Alfred Korzybski's work Science & Sanity. First read Quantum Psychology by Robert Anton Wilson who George Carlin loved to read, by the way. Works of Epistemology.
Mr. Sugrue, You have been one of my favorite scholars and lecturers to listen to and learn from (and inevitably pawn off some of your ideas as my own). I’d be honored to meet you some day (it’s one of life’s greatest honors to meet someone who taught you the honor of life - philosophy). If you have any time, I’d love to fly out and treat you to dinner and discuss some philosophical concepts, and just meet you. If there’s anywhere I can reach out to to set this up, let me know
The video ended abruptly. Hopefully, there's a continuation or at least what is left out of the recording is a small recap of thoughts that would be okay to leave out. Thanks for the instructive discussion. Planning on getting a masters in philosophy, and Nietzsche has been a perpetual go to figure so far. Thanks again, Dr. Sugrue. :)
I graduated with my undergrad in Philosophy a few years ago and yes I did read Nietzsche because I wanted to. I would agree it is probably not a good sign haha but in the in long run, very beneficial. Even if you do not agree with the premises, judgements and or criticisms Nietzsche comes to in regard to culture, christianity and society there is a lot to learn from and admire about him simply in respect to how he stuck to his ideas, was not afraid to put them forth and refused to compromise as Dr. Sugrue remarks. On another note, I could only wish to have the grasp of the western tradition and the oratory skills of Dr. Sugrue.
I am philosophy and literature noob, for a better word. But doc presents some of the most sophisticated ideas by the greatest minds ever in a such way i can follow and enjoy. This is more than a lecture, this is also some sort of entertainment and I'm grateful i can listen to it.
Thank you. As an artist with an affinity for values that originated in ancient Greece, your summation of these ideas helps me to understand what we have lost, why and what Nietzsche believes we should do about it.
I really admire the thoughtful, articulate and enthusiastic way that Dr. Sugrue teaches philosophy and literature. He has inspired me to want to learn more.
Professor, I just want to say thank you. Your comments are always filled with the kindest words for a reason. Your knowledge and ability to articulate that knowledge is unmatched. I will forever be grateful. God bless
Few can afford to dedicate so much attention to all the ideas that parallel history. Dr. Sugrue brings so much context and clarity to the culture heritages. I appreciate that.🙂
I keep re-watching all your videos, Professor Sugrue. I never thought I could be interested in philosophy, but you talk about the subject with such passion and wit that is very inspiring. My brain has grown many sizes after finding your channel, so thank you very much!
I want to thank you from the depths of my heart for uploading the first video (marcus aurelius) & all the other ones that came after it Im now reading kant, nietzche & plato all because of your videos lmao hoping you recover & feel better soon!
Dr. Sugrue. Your channel means a lot to me. I first discovered you by seeing your amazing Marcus Aurelius lecture and have devoured all your other lectures. Thank you for being such a wealth of information and introducing me to so many great minds. I hope you are well and wish you all the best.
Hi Professor. Thank you for your lectures. I’ve been listening to them for a very long time. Your lecture on stoicism was my companion through multiple seasons of hard labour in the summer and winters as I picked up my trade. They served to occupy my mind and bring focus to the future life I have struggled to create. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Mr Sugrue, your descriptions in your lessons have been extremely helpful in making me more thoughtful and introduced many ideas contributing to different perspectives I have.
Thanks! I met your work during lock down Dr Sugrue. You have helped me in my understanding and in my teaching. You Sir are awesome. Much respect from New Zealand
The part about Nietzsche I love the most is his cutting critique of other philosophers. Especially in Morgenröte, to not only just say that he disagrees with their philosophies but to substantiate that shit so well.Felt like a declaration of war, one day somebody going to actually have the patience to sit down and thumb through his works and come to realize “oh shit, this is literally Sociopathy; the Philosopher” and ban all his shit. But until then I’ll always love reading the aphorisms I’m Beyond Good and Evil and be thrilled that a man had the freedom to say he’d rather be a bloodthirsty ruler than a docile bitch. What a legend.
I do hope that someone is archiving all of your, lectures, speeches and writings. You are still needed. Thank you for all the knowledge you have given.
Whether intended or not professor, @29:00 your description of Nietzsche as sui generis and thanking god for it had me chuckling. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge with the masses. Additionally, I am so happy for you and your family that you have reached a level of good health. May you continue to thrive. 🙏
When you referenced falling in every direction and brought up interstellar space, it reminded me of the novel Starmaker by Olaf Stapledon. If you haven’t read it, I think you would really enjoy the finely crafted philosophical journey which is presented in those pages.
It is simply wonderful to have discovered your wonderfully lucid presentations of such influential minds in such a trustworthy framework. Thank you so much and may God bless you deeply as you manifest such beautiful spirit. A double gift to us. Thank you sir .
Currently binge watching your entire library of videos. Thank you for sharing such valuable and entertaining content. Amazing presentations, and I’m hooked.
This was such a fun listen. I really do want to read more philosophy. I currently own Kant's Critique of pure reason and watched a couple yt videos on the Categorical Imperative, fascinating stuff regarding the constant nature of moral virtue proposed in that idea. Such as the lying example. Thank you for these mini discourses, it's a great honor to see these videos in their most recent releases.
Although you have left us, I have rejoined and rejoiced just to be able to listen to you. There is only one Professor Sugrue. Franz Omar Fanon Foucault tried to copy him. Fanon took on Sartre. "The Wretched Earth," "Black Skin. White Masks," I have gone through, now looking at others he wrote.Just one foot in the other. Keep marching moving forward.
You are one of the best and most gifted philosophy teachers I have encountered! Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic knowledge on this subject ❤
He might have gotten older, but he still got it! Wonderful presentation! Thank you very much for all that you do! Edit: The amazing thing about this lecture is, I so often had the desire to comment on one particular thing, but always got captivated right the next moment and I just couldn’t stop listening. It‘s a really fun lecture and there are many gems inside of it. For example: I always loved (as a german) that great teacher Sugrue came back to the german language, and it‘s just fun to listen to his older stories, or to hear him reminiscence about the past and to make comparisons with his later insights. This really gives the lecture a lot of funny but insightful moments, and I must say, he is absolutely right in his observation that Nietzsche is, often times, something for the young, for those with more testosterone and less brain than later on: very well put! And as always it was very enjoyable to watch and see him how careful he is in choosing the right words, especially in that particular moment when he was addressing his own experience with Nietzsche. And I must say, I have a lot of empathy for that. I think, I get the feeling and have quite a similiar experience with Nietzsche. He redefines your categories, but his conclusions are often unacceptable, neither with our (political) society, nor for the people who have to live with themselves and others, while making use of them.
i met your work during lock down Dr Sugrue. You have helped me in my understanding and in my teaching. You Sir are awesome. Much respect from New Zealand
Thank you for the volumes of knowledge that you have left us to ponder over. Your a one of a kind professor, thank you for everything you have taught us.
I’m glad to see your in good spirits professor, your as sharp as ever and I continue to find wisdom in your lectures. I find that these lectures keep me grounded and forces me to not to take life for granted. I hope you continue to fight the good fight and I’ll continue to watch your videos. Stay strong professor, like Diogenes your carrying the lantern and it’s up to us follow your light. Thank you
Amazing content! Thank you so much for sharing this. It is amazing to have access to such knowlege for free. God bless you, Dr Sugrue. Greetings from Brazil!
I just read one of your comments below describing your simple lifestyle and your acceptance of the fact that your brain is becoming "swiss cheese". I would agree that it is quite strange and unproductive for people to "hail lord Sugrue". However, I would like to mention that your lectures have been a great experience for me. I'm a busy psychology and pre-medical undergraduate student who is very interested in philosophy, but simply has not had time to take more than 1 or 2 courses in philosophy, and the reading I do in my freetime is mostly focused on psychololgy. Your philosophy lectures, along with some others on the internet, have been a great pleasure to listen to, and have slowly but surely contributed to the little bits of information interwoven in my mind. It has been a pleasure having your lectures and monologues on the internet for free. I do not hail you, I do not praise you, but I do thank you.
