Her onions are cooked down pretty damn good! Give the English lady some credit for bringing national cuisine to life in her own rendition. I cook her recipes quite often, with my own flare of course and they always come out fabulous!
stfu 😂🤣😆nitika they can criticize their food, they have the right to do so when hipsters take it and make it their own. She's probably horrible at it anyways.
Thats not a "Kerala cuisine" as a South Indian I know that.. No South Indian state cook fish curry like that.. all she done is added some English flavors to a mix of onion and tamarind.. and who puts that load of turmeric in a curry? Turmeric will give a bitter off putting taste if used this much.. The closest dish that I can compare to her version is the "Meen Moilee" from Kerala.
I love how unconventional and carefree Nigella is in her cooking. Whatever she makes, she makes from her heart and not from an instruction book:) Love from India
I miss you Nigella. You are always been my favorite. I've been following you since my childhood. For ever summer with Nigella Lawson was my favorite show 😍
She's an amazing woman. Reminds me of indomitable women I've been privileged to know, and aspired to be like, from all walks of life and many parts of the world. So much pain in those eyes. So much hard-earned knowledge. So much determination to keep going and find goodness. To love, adore, and protect her children above all else. And to make the best of a life that looks so very different to us on the outside, than what it really has been and is.
Right? I'm more confused that the grown-up's are eating supper after the kids have gone to bed. If they are eating around 8, that's a bit early for the kids to be in bed. But if the kids are sleeping around 9, are they eating that late? Couldn't all of them just eat together? Must she be having curry with red chilis that would burn off the kids' tongues? What's the story?
Good choice of fish however too much tamarind and turmeric. Again the fish should be cooked in coconut sauce ( coconut, onion, tamarind to taste , paprika/ red chilli powder and a bit of coriander powder all ground to a paste) optional- cumin, fenugreek, red hot chilli powder Then heat a table spoon of oil to splutter some mustard seeds, fenugreek and finely chopped shallots with dried red chillies. Add this to the cooked fish let it simmer. ( amount of oil used can vary) . Do not forget the curry leaves at different times of cooking .. There you go- Kerala fish curry ... love all your ideas of cooking especially party food Nigella
@@p.art4705 It's like using the Kerala Matta rice instead Basmathi and saying Hey! happy Eating Hyderabadi Biriyani.Look Im calm only and im pretty sure she or anybody helping her to maintain this youtube channel has the good spirits to take a healthy cristicism about a misrepresentation.I hope you get what im trying to say. Im from Kerala and I soo know how a Kerala Fish curry is made. Have been eating some of the best of them all my life. Definitely not this way. So when a very credible and super celebrity like her presents it like this way i thought of voicing out my opinion. Peace ✌
Too much turmeric turns the gravy bitter. For color and flavor, we only add a teaspoon or less. The fish curry looks great but I wonder how it will taste with so much turmeric. Edit- Thank you for the likes everyone 🙂
@Daniel Hollingsworth She said a teaspoon but she didn't add a teaspoon. It was a lot more than that. Secondly, before adding turmeric to the gravy she had marinated the fish in a lot of turmeric.
Oh wow, this is good to know that you only use a small amount of turmeric. I've tried other recipes that use 1 tbsp. I didn't like the taste it was too strong.
Hey Nigella....i love ur cooking Bt one thing don't use that much turmeric powder,,,, coz in India we use turmeric power for good colour and slight flavor,,,, If you will use that much of turmeric then it's only gonna taste turmeric but nothing else!!!
Emma Flint not Indian food! I love nigella but The above comment is right. Being an indian I think we know our spices more. A tsp of turmeric is good enough. Also I’m from Kerala , so it’s not “keralan”. A simple Kerala fish curry is great enough. A good version from her though and it’s her show so she adds what she sees fit. Fair enough!
Shaz B she never said she is a chef! She is a food critic who loves to cook good enough to have a show so if you wanna see real chef cooking then go watch Gorodon
This would be the bitterest curry with all that turmeric. Plus use red onions instead of yellow for Indian food when you can.. Also only cumin as a spice for kerala fish curry? Where are the curry leaves? I mean you can definitely call this Indian but its a basic fish curry with coconut and way too much turmeric:-))
About how much turmeric....half or less of what she suggests ? I also feel like it needs a starchy accompaniment. What would you serve with it ? For a little garnish, finely minced parsley or cilantro?
@@karenkaren3189 cilantro definitely, and she did serve it with fresh, fluffy rice. Rice is the best thing with curries like this. The turmeric really depends on you. I say to try the recipe first, and then decide how much you want to reduce. If youre not a turmeric fan (like me) Then maybe reduce a teaspoon of it from the recipe. Make sure to put something like chilli powder instead to compensate for any loss of flavour. As for the onions, I would brown them because that brings more flavour, but to each their own.
Found this in your cookbook and decided to make it tonight. So checks to see if there is a video, and there is! Thanks Nigella, and thanks for the turmeric advice people.
Well, that was "weird"? Goes and says goodnight to the kids, and then suppers done. The adults eat?! How dang early do the kids eat something else, and have to be in bed??!!😞😞
What on earth, your using cleaning gloves to marinate, you could've just used a tablespoon, lol. Oh by the way, turmeric is good but too much turmeric is not good
With all due respect Mam, I wouldn't eat that. I would give a limb to eat a fish curry from any of the numerous street stalls or small eateries in India.
PLEASE do not chuck a few table spoons of spices on top of a load of onions , top it with coconut milk & tamarind and call it Keralan Fish curry. As a Keralite who cooks, I am pretty pretty sure that finished dish a.k.a TURMERIC-cumin concoction did not taste anything like a fish curry from kerala; but somethingt light years away! How on earth those two 'guests' managed to stomach that abysmal dish is beyond belief....trust all concerned are feeling alright/ recovered. Next time please google or serch on youtube for an authentic recipe -there are plenty available- and then vlog, please.
@Susan S So glad to have met someone who keeps the tab on what nigella reads. Congratulations you've indeed got the most coveted job! But Please do keep your voice down whilst you LOLs and HAHAs, as she might be tempted to add more turmeric in the next recipe. FYKI, the recipe is from 2002 but it's posted n youtube only last month 20/4/19; I presume with her knowledge. Do 'lol'

@@octaviushilbert8307 - Young children here in the United Kingdom have school to attend at 08.30am, and therefore go to bed around 20.00pm. During our summer months, darkness doesn't happen in the UK until around 22.30pm, and if this was filmed during a weekday the children would have to be up and out the house by around 08.00am ready to attend school. The children, at the time, would have probably eaten before the adults, and possibly something that was more suitable for the children's tastes. It's quite normal here in many households - feed the children first, then preparation for their bedtime - feed the adults while the children sleep. Eating all together, children and adults, will be the case during weekends.
I just found Nigella's video and loved her care free presentation, I can't wait to make this curry fish dish ....with all the comments I think you should follow her recipe and people can tweak it to their preferred taste later..simple. ...I look forward to more recipes from this lovely lady!
Deepa Lall it says chicken curry not indian chicken curry. She always plays with her cooking the wat she likes it to be. I often made this and it’s superb and very fast. If i want real indian then i go indian restaurant
Thank you all, cooks familiar with this style Indian food - you have saved me from over-doing the tumeric... once in a lifetime, found a mistake with my dear Nigella! She makes cooking such a pleasure!!!
Did you people read the title ?? It’s called nigellas” curry fish... if you don’t like something add less and grill the damn onions longer!! I thought I’d read about how it tasted damn. Anyways
Fish curry and rice is an excellent meal combination and eaten in all the coastal states of India not just Kerela but the Keralite recipe stands out bcoz of its unique coconut and tamarind fusion .
Yes..i did use the same amount of tumeric, and i used thick concentrated coconut milk ..that will compensate the strong taste of tumeric, in asian countries, stock can be easily found at the local supermarket 😊
@@JoJo-jy2rw My dude, that looked like 2 tbsp of turmeric.1 or 1/2 tsp of turmeric is enough for 1 kg fish.Even for marination, you just need 1/2 tsp.Turmeric has bitter taste and too much of it would give a bitter taste and overpower the taste of fish as well as curry.
Jo S respect your suggestion dude but let me ask you,Where you from? If you are not from india or Pakistan you will never understand how to use indian spices 😊
She has murdered the kerela fish curry i have grown up eating . why bother making it if she cant be botnered to make it the right authenthic way instead of this bastarsized version!
Y'all need to calm down. Nigella is British so she can use lesser or more turmeric than what you would normally do according to her taste. I live in Asia, yes we also use less turmeric when cooking but it's up to her to use more etc as long as it taste delicious
