When my partner and I took our daughter to Disneyworld we drove past a creationist theme park. He joked that we should go just for the giggles. I pointed out that a gay couple where one of the men is transgender might not receive the best customer service there. Then he was like, "Yeah, let's just do Animal Kingdom." We did. It was super fun.
As an atheist, I have often pondered the theist challenge, "What would it take to convince you of the existence of God?" This video made me quite certain that a nightmare at the Creation Museum would not do the trick.
The answer to what would make you believe in God, is easy. If God did exist, he would know what would make any atheist believe and could act accordingly. The fact he seems determined to stay hidden, says it all really.
@@grahvis Every conversion story is ultimately about how god reveals himself to the individual. In this story, it was a vision, like Paul on the road to Damascus. In such stories god often reveals his existence, but he never justifies it. If you ask, he just bullies and belittles you, like Job and the whirlwind.
I agree with the Matt Dillahunty response to this question- I don't know what would convince me, but if God exists, he knows, and has chosen not to do it. So either god doesn't exist, or he doesn't want me to believe he does.
Actually the answer is quite simple: Die. option 1 - maybe your right so it's simply over. 2 - you were wrong and it's not over, so what then.....hmmm. It's just something I ponder while camping alone in the woods with my dog.
Funfact: back in 2008 Mad magazine made a Night at the Museum parody highlighting the Creatonist Museum, complete with a Charles Darwin running screaming into the night from Moses riding a T-Rex.
I think the exposition about the divorce from Sarah and Eric’s character’s life is to immediately make it clear that he lives an “unchristian” life. The God is Not Dead movies do this too, hanging a lampshade on the “atheist” character’s backstory that’s largely only visible to the target demo.

Pretty sure that I won’t be the only one to warn you; but, yes, there is a sequel. Gutsick Gibbon has already done a fantastic take-down of both. But she concentrates more on the science, it’s nice to hear about filming technicalities from you so please, please, pretty please do a video on the sequel too!
The “Luke, I am your father” misquote has been around nearly as long as the film itself. Back before RU-vid made it possible to look everything up - even before VHS made it possible to watch films on repeat until you’d memorised every line - movie quotes were entirely dependent on peoples’ faulty memories. That’s why we have classic quotes like “beam me up, Scotty” and “play it again, Sam” that are never actually spoken on screen. “Luke, I am your father” supplanted “No, I *am* your father” a long time ago in the popular memory. Even people who know better use the incorrect quote because it’s not worth the trouble of explaining that, actually, *you’re* right and everyone *else* is wrong. I’m not defending the film’s use of the misquote (even if I kinda am), but I understand why it happened.
So just a comment on the toy castles on the books, the one built on the Darwin, Dawkins, and Sagan books is unstable and slanted; whereas the one on the Bible is solid and straight. That good ol' not so "subliminal" messaging.
The two towers on the books seems intended to symbolize science vs. religiion. While the science tower is crumbling, with part of the tower on the left already on the ground it means to convey its shaky grounds. While the religion tower, built upon just a single book instead of multiple, stands steady (and is higher), because it stands on sturdy foundations... It conveys their belief quite nicely, stupid as it may be.
Matthew 7:24-27, if you believe that sort of thing... “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

If a night shift security guard shows up in a fancy new sports car my first reaction would be to have all the museum curators check their collections for missing items and then verify that all items in the collections are legitimate.
The US seems like a place where you never get bored - there's simply too much nonsense going on 24/7. I still prefer the mus3um of archeology where our guide pointed out how much smaller humans were thousands of years ago (size of clothes, tools & weapons), from which one can deduct with time we evolved to grow bigger and stronger because there was more food around us and less predators.
I went into Ripon Cathedral a while ago. It's been expanded a few times from the original 672 church, but the crypt of that is still there, and it's really quite obvious that it dates from a time when people didn't grow beyond 70 inches tall and didn't have waist measurements over 30 inches, like _ever._
That is not really "evolution". Our hunter gatherer ancestors were taller than human beings are, on average. Outside of the Netherlands, that is. 🙂 The human beings shrunk was not due to genetics, but to environmental circumstances. Mostly the diet we depended on after inventing agriculture.
Isn't neandraghzlls we're the largest one does and the ones that we are more related too were smaller than them right, you are welcome too tell me I'm very wrong
"Blackmail, it's the Christian way" lol. True though. Also it always baffles me how misinformed Christians about why people leave the religion. When I was a teen a read the Bible front to back twice. For me there was too many contradictions in the Bible itself and the Bible vs. what the church and my mom taught. Plus the critical thinking vs. magical thinking was driving me insane. If someone is blackmailed into believing do they actually believe or are they just trying to make the people who blackmailed them happy? And if god is real, wouldn't god know you don't really believe anyway?
"If someone is blackmailed into believing do they actually believe or are they just trying to make the people who blackmailed them happy" Could be both. I think the blackmailing done is more subtle then just wanting to keep someone else happy. I think a lot of Christians will tell themselves they believe for the simple fact none of them have properly mourned there lost ones. If you can tell yourself they go to a better place and you meet them at one point you simply can not properly mourn (or at least you mourn differently. As the loss is just temporary). Accepting God is not real is relatively easy. Accepting that you sister (or even worse, child) is not really in a better place and that you will never get to see her again is a hell of a lot harder thing to accept.
I don't think too many Christians (at least those that are notable figures within Christianity and apologetics) are actually misinformed about why people leave the religion. They just can't accept the reasons given, because doing so would undermine their entire worldview.
@@ronrolfsen3977 I guess I should clarify. When I was talking about emotion I meant "feeling god's presence" and stuff like that. I was taught that if you were 'right with god" that you feel it. Meaning that if you read your Bible, if you obeyed god the "right way" if you asked forgiveness of all your sins and were sincere and god was happy with you would "feel it". Which is I what meant not stable. I questioned my very feelings too ..."Am I feeling the right thing" etc.....=(
I love it when im told that i am an atheist because "i dont like the idea of being held accountable/love to sin". Then when pressed, the claimant is never able to elaborate. Id often ask how it can be possible to dislike being held accountable by a being that i do not believe exists. But i nearly always got the response that i actually do believe but my desire to sin prevents me from admitting it, lol. I got a kick out of that. Im then told that upon becoming christian, i would be forgiven of my sins anyway, which is odd, since a religion with contingencies built in to circumvent the penalty associated with sin suggests that followers of said religion really really love to sin. Its all backwards logic meant to twist up people's minds.

Ngl, I saw another similar channel, Gutsick Gibbon, cover this same video, not too long ago, and it always baffles me, as someone who used to work in TV production, how Christians seem to always largely revel in these super low-budget promo stunt videos. It's like they think this will make them seem hip and cool with their kids' generation, despite all evidence to the contrary. But then again, ignoring evidence in favor of blind dogma is par for the course for these sorts of people.
I'm not confident it can ever "make sense", but personally these films are a little easier to "understand" when I consider it's basically just proselytizing posing as cinema. It's got nothing to do with storytelling, or anything legitimately artistic. It's a thing created solely for the purpose of "making more fundamentalists". This is why, I feel, these "Christian" films are all so *transparently* horrible. There's no conviction behind them. It's self-evident. If you want to see faith-based themes done right in cinema, it's Scorsese's filmography. That's how you comment on faith without condescending/proselytizing. That's cinema art.
I love the sweater, you could easily cosplay Velma from Scooby Doo. I think the dino costume was actually Kent Hovind, after all that guy's already a fossil.
For those fortunate enough to not live in the US these days, it must seem as if we have an endless supply of idiots here. Sadly, that's an accurate observation. I've been around for a while, and am amazed that anyone listens to these hucksters and their line of malarkey. But, fact is, if you have enough people, you're going to find enough fools. I had just nurtured the illusion that the percentage was lower. Oh, well, Emma, always a treat to hear your take on things.
True. Even USA atheists seem to struggle with real vs not real. Seems less like challenging religious nonsense and more like a way to promote individuals and generate some funds. There are atheists in prisons around the world, but these "celebrity" atheists only seem to raise money for themselves. Never see them challenging those scenarios and trying to free fellow atheists. Or even religious people on the wrong side of an opposing religion. Just money for me me me.
Can we please stop with this line of thought that somehow the United States is the only place in the world with idiots and grifters. It's an accurate observation of a lot of places, we just have more cameras on us.
Just want to say, I'm fascinated and transfixed by the melting Dali clock visible on Emma's wall. Don't know how many people notice that, but my eye is drawn to it.
That was the second thing I noticed in the vid, shortly after Emma herself. Third was the weird plush flesh colored thing on the top shelf behind her. What is that?
That "dream Jim" guy who keeps appearing and magically teleporting Derek from place to place and manipulating his dream is obviously some sort of warlock. What's he doing in a Christian movie?

That’s so cool to hear you’re using the patreon money for more accurate human generated subtitles! Not a lot of people give consideration to the deaf or hard of hearing :)
A little cold water to throw on this: in reality, a guard would not be left to their own cognizance to patrol a museum, but would have to check in at certain stations at regular times to verify that they did not go to sleep and had checked for fire, more than anything else. But that would spoil the whole movie genre.
The development of human feet is fascinating. We have pretty well developed spring arches now, but there are fossilized footprints of feet that hadn't quite reached the level of efficiency found in modern human feet. Fossilized toe bone fragments also indicate a shift to bipedalism over time.

One thing I've noticed that Emma does a good job of is being fair, thoughtful, honest and civil when reviewing or critiquing something or someone she doesn't really agree with. This how I think people who are different from one another should conduct themselves, its really easy to negatively put down and label people whom have opinions and beliefs different from you, but its not as easy to hold that back and put objectivity forward.

Emma, I heard you on Truth Wanted this week. Excellent work even though you were doing it at 2 am. I think this "movie" can be summed up in one statement: god did it. Dinosaurs, starlight, radiometric dating, sedimentary dating, genetic evolution evidence can all be brushed away with "god did it."
On the other hand, according to their story, god is not powerful enough to have created the universe 13.8 billion years ago and had to fake everything.

I grew up as a pentecostal in northern kentucky, about 20 minutes from the creation museum. We went all the time and I loved it as a kid. Looking back at it, it's a bit nostalgic, but also disturbing
Look into Gutsick Gibbons, she does an excellent in-depth tour of the inside of the creation museum and the ark. It’s very educational and intriguing, highly recommend.
Thank you Emma Thorne for putting your mind and sanity on the line for us to be certain that we don't want to watch or visit this "museum"! Regarding the video quality, they could be lucky with the phone in question that it actually has decent auto stabilization of the picture? The pure animal exhibits seemed ok, but combined with the utterly ludicrous other exhibits the total image is dragged down to a don't visit. Not surprising because of the people behind said "museum". Thank you again Emma, the review was great and the subject matter required ridicule. Take care and stay safe!
Miracles are always done to help someone. Parting the sea, bringing back Lazarus from the dead, multiplying fish and loaves to feed the crowd, etc. Making light travel faster than the speed of light just so we can see the stars does not help anyone in the same way. No one would die, drown, or go hungry if we could not see any stars in the night sky.
Great and honest review. Most would just rip into this just because it was made by Eric Hovind, but even really bad movies can have some good parts. About the speed of light thing (God made the light go faster in the beginning so the universe only "appears" to be billions of years old), I've heard similar arguments from creationists. It's usually something like "God made 'X' appear old to test our faith." My reply to this has always been, "Then God could have made the universe 5 minutes ago and made you only think it's old."
Thank you for this glimpse of the movie and the museum so I don’t have to see either of them. I assume you’d agree that Plan 9 From Outer Space deserves more stars.
I've been a night guard for years. You can pretty much always fall asleep if you want, the trick is to take the keys with you and lock yourself in a room without any cameras in it so nobody will catch you sleeping.
As a Christian, I have to say the sad part is this is one of the better Christian movies of recent years. Sure the acting is terrible, the special effects are terrible, the facts are totally nonexistent.... but it's short which makes it much better than the other ones that have all the same problems but are feature-length.
@@ParanormalEncyclopedia After listening to many episodes of God Awful Movies by Noah Lugeons, I am tending to agree with you. The blatant bullshit in Night at the Creation Museum is fairly obvious to a sceptical thinker, which actually makes this kinda entertaining, even for an atheist to watch, rather than the cringe that is reviewed on God Awful Movies.
@@ParanormalEncyclopedia Catholic speaking, and yes, this bizarre onslaught of "Christian" films the last 10 years or so (such as the "God's Not Dead" alleged franchise) is really unfortunate. In my opinion, they don't even really qualify as cinema, per se. They's essentially just hijacking the art of cinema for the sake of proselytizing. Which i find personally kind of...despicable. It's entirely possible though to make a genuinely interesting film with faith-based themes. For instance, nearly every film Scorsese has ever made is laced with Catholic themes, to one degree or another. This video where Emma eviscerates this silly creationist film is really great, but I think it would also be interesting to see what she thinks about a legitimately great film like Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ". Or "Silence", in particular. You really don't need to subscribe to any faith to appreciate those films as great cinematic work. Years before I started going back to mass "The Last Temptation of Christ" was high on my favorite films of all time. Given the context, just want to make it clear I don't believe in proselytizing nor do I give a shit whether someone subscribes to any faith or not. I just feel it's important to understand not all faith-themed films are...lol, bullshit.

Great content as always :) Is it just me or did this seem to follow the plot line of A Christmas Carol a lot more than Night at the Museum? For people who believe in a miraculous creation it seems like a bit of a cop-out to go with the "it was all a dream" troupe rather than something actually supernatural.
Running around in the dark, getting repeatedly startled by different things is Eric's default setting. I can't say for sure, as I haven't been there, but I'm pretty sure the "Lunar New Year" stuff has more to do with their argument that dragons are ubiquitous in cultural mythology because people coexisted with dinosaurs.

The guy then proclaimed himself to be the brother of jesus, and approx 40 million ppl died in the war he led. The Taiping rebellion. Cos Jesus. That led to the downfall of the qing, the first and second chinese revolution.. and ultimately the comminist china of today ( but its not communist). All cos of a leaflet about jesus. 😂😂😂👍
I've been to the Creation Museum many many years ago. We went as a youthgroup in church and I remember the biggest take away for me was "Wow... a real museum without having to see that awful MILLION or BILLIONS of years propaganda everywhere." I'm very glad I have grown as person lol.
As an aside, the issue of light being as old as it is from the universe around us, and the fact that I could *measure* the speed of light was like, it was the exact thing that made me wonder: "why on Earth am I trying to rationalize all this Creationist stuff, when I can just glance up on a clear night and be refuted, and instantly lose all predictive power?" I realized I couldn't DO anything with Creationist "science". It's just a peanut gallery that has nothing of substance to apply to models. As a young Christian that believed in all this YEC stuff because I was just soaked in it by my parents, I had NO opportunity to find anything outside of the tight control of my parents. No internet, no mail, no physically exiting the house, no outside influences or witty writers. I didn't lose my faith in any showy way or because of trauma. No sky-daddy-issues to unpack here. It was sitting in the dark, quietly pondering about light. That was all it took to end my belief in God.
And God said, "let there be light" but the universe was still in early access and it took a few million years for that feature to be added so god waited before continuing creation all the while contemplating why it was using such a buggy engine.
Thanks Emma for the cc they are great. Thanks to your Pations for making you more accessible. I'm glade you did the review as I could not make it thought the first into.

Its the kind of thing you often see people of lesser means being duped into buying as a status symbol by our f'ed up version of capitalism. That and basically being pressured into buying merch from his new job on his first day puts a bit of a strange spin on the film by the end of it.

It isn't a bad sports car, but yeah, it isn't an expensive one in the slightest. People regularly spend more on trucks. They definitely gave the character that car to (cheaply) display him as ignorant and impractical. Though, it isn't actually too impractical to the life they portray the guy to have ...And he isn't any less ignorant at the end either.

Mental gymnastics is believing God is powerful enough to miraculously speed up light but somehow not powerful enough to think of a better way to do things than condemn the vast majority of humanity to hell
I wanted to thank you for the captions investment! I'm not hard of hearing nor a foreign language learner who needs it but I do have friends in both of these categories and I just wanted to add my voice that your efforts to make your work more accessible are seen and appreciated. Keep on keeping on!
It is pretty stupid. If god is all powerful and and created everything then why wouldn't it have just made the speed of light fast enough to reach Earth in that time? God created light so god set the universal constant so why set it up in a way that wouldn't work. Oh wait god is infallible so much like Maxwell Smart god said "Would you believe, I meant to do that" and chose to work around the obvious problem instead of admitting screwing up and fixing it.
The Giant Chicken names are an absolute delight :) And highly appreciate the captions. Loving the showmanship, the quality of the videos is increasing in an incredible fashion. Super happy to be watching and supporting this channel :D
You probably summed it very well, the main problem with the Creation Museum is that it's run by creationists to push creationist ideas. Otherwise it would be a great museum!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It also made me think how much I'd love to see an Emma/Gutsick Gibbon crossover, sort of like the Emma/Sciman Dan crossover
12:33 Dear Editor Emma Does this "teleport" break the 180-degree rule? I nitpick, I know. Still, wouldn't it make more sense to have both individuals on the same side pre- and post- teleport? Sounds like the Star Wars misquote was probably in character for Derek. it's how most people remember the quote, so I don't have a problem with it, like when someone says "Play it again, Sam" or "Scotty, beam us up".

so I was dragged to this museum a few years ago and all the dragons and stuff were there and idk if I was just there at the same time they filmed it what happened. either way the museum sucks except for some dinosaurs and bugs. but a plus is they had a dip and dots stand outside and a zip line that I never got to try because it was too expensive 👍 edit: also my dad bought in the gift shop a dvd where bill nye and some dude from the museum debated each other about evolution vs creation and he made me watch the entire thing 👁👄👁
I think the dragon stuff is supposed to explain how myths featuring dragons, including those from China, were all based on sightings of actual dinosaurs that had survived past the extinction.
Funny that creationists would use an "evolution is racist" argument, Fundamentalist/evangelical Christian denominations tend to be pretty racist among all their other bigotry.
