The original Night Court television series ran on NBC from January of 1984 to May of 1992. 9 seasons and 193 episodes gave audiences a peek into the world of a Manhattan Municipal court during its night shift. Judge Harry T. Stone presided over the court despite the fact he was young, eccentric, and clearly an odd choice for the job.
The series was the creation of Reinhold Wedge who previously contributed on Barney Miller in the late 70s and early 80s.
Fans of the original series will be excited to learn that a sequel series is currently in the works. John Larroquette is set to reprise his role as Dan Fielding. Melissa Rauch from The Big Bang Theory and her husband Winston Rauch are serving as the show's executive producers. After January, the duos production company, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. TV is overseeing the series production.
It's not clear as of yet when the reboot series will air, but rumor has it that it might see a premiere in Fall of 2021. Hopefully, the new series can stay true to the vibe of the original series while breaking new ground and exploring new territory. Hollywood has a bad habit of ruining reboots by 'trying too hard' but if they play their cards right, they just might be able to come up with a new modern classic.

I agree with you except that Hawaii Five-0 reboot ran for 10 seasons, the new Magnum PI is in its third season and the new reboot MacGyver is in his fourth season. But maybe those shows are different I was really surprise that Hawaii 50 reboot ran for as long as it did. But you're right a lot of times the spin offs or reboots do not work. Its a very fine line between tribute to the original and making it new without screwing up.

The biggest strike they have working against them is that Reinhold Weege, the show's creator/mastermind/often writer is gone. Without him, the reboot's chances are slim, especially since society's massive misandry may get the show "cancelled" before it's actually cancelled, considering Dan Fielding's history. Of course, in the finale, he was showing some signs of a possible future change of attitude & it's a huge plus that it's the original actor, so we'll have to see what happens. The balance of the characters, the writing & the whole tone of the show will have to manage a very difficult balancing act, even tougher than what the original managed.

I loved him on Cheers and loved that character. Just like I loved his comedy act. When I heard that he was going to star in Night Court; I thought that the " Harry Character" would be perfect in the legal profession {and before you feel that this is a dig at the legal profession, I am a defense lawyer] just as Columbo is a "perfect" detective. But, they watered down the character so much, making him the run of the mill "golden hearted" quirky hero ; that I just stopped watching not only the show but Harry Anderson. Harry the Hat was shrewd, tough, and a good human being. Judge Stone was a blah sitcom regular.

There were so many laughs around Dan Fielding. John, I remember on Black Sheep Squadron, and when he appeared in Night Court, it was a bit of a shock, but Dan is by far my favorite character on the show. I think they made him a target a bit too much, like being lost and presumed dead, then the whole Phantom of the Opera story line was a bit much, but he pulled it off so well.

I'm curious how they're going to squeeze in Dan's character. On the last episode of _Night Court_ Dan quit to go after Christine. Christine had left to be a congressman. Although John Larroquette did not reprise Dan Fielding for a spin off, he did play a similar character on the John Larroquette Show. Even though he wasn't the same character, he played a man recovering from addiction settling in a new town and trying to become a better person. The never drew a direct line, but he could very well have been Dan Fielding except for the name.

There is no need for them to address his death. In the new show they said the new judge is his daughter, so it is likely he married and moved on to other things. As for the rest of the characters: Kristine having gone to congress would be more likely to have a bigger job than a Night Court Defense attorney IF she has left office. Mac became a film producer, so if he stopped doing that and returned to being a court clerk he would still be moved to a different location. Lynette, the stenographer would likely have been moved up to a different court based on seniority. Fielding, Roz, and even Bull (despite his alien adventure - leaving behind a relatively new wife - Wanda) could all reasonably still be in the same court.

One of my favorite sight gags on the original was one that had Bull standing near an elevator underneath the call light on the wall. He was deep in thought about something, and when he visibly showed he had an idea, his face brightened and the call light above his head went off, and the elevator door opened to let someone out. The timing was perfect.

My favorite Night Court episodes were the ones in which they had to process as many cases as possible in one shift. It was the sitcom equivalent of a one-liner-no need to develop characters, just set up, punchline, pause for laugh, move along. It was as close to the pace of the movie Airplane as they could get, and it was always hilarious. The one I remember most was where they had to get through a certain number after Harry bets some guy. In the end, they were one case short so Harry lost the bet, but he asked for double or nothing over arm wrestling. Everyone knew skinny Harry would lose, but Christine put herself where only the other guy could see her, and then she flashed him. When celebrating his victory later, Harry told her that he could see in his opponent’s eyes that the other guy “knew he was in the presence of greatness.” Christine smirks and replies, “Thanks!”

I saw Night Court taped in the winter of '91, towards the end of its run. I'd gone to Universal Studios (LA) with my dad and we were offered tickets for NC but in order for us to receive them, we had to sit through *three* tapings of Love Connection first. FTR, only the first two rows of the LC audience actually got to vote for contestants on that show. Also FTR, Chuck Woolery is an asshat. Anywho, I met everyone from the NC cast except for Marsha Warfield. Richard Moll let me pat him on the head. Fun times. BTW, Harry's office was obstructed from audience view; we watched those scenes live on monitors. And much of the set relied on forced perspective camera tricks; the cafeteria was way smaller in real life than it appeared on TV and in the courtroom, benches were way closer together than they would be in real life. Like the narrator said, I really hope they're able to recapture the "vibe" that the OG had -- Mr. Larroquette's involvement certainly gives em a fighting chance. RIP Harry Anderson and Selma Diamond.

Harry Anderson actually was a Mel Torme fan. It won't be the same without him. I'm hoping the new show won't be completely sanitized in the name of political correctness.

The producers of Night Court originally wanted Markie Post, but she was unable to because she was working on The Fall Guy. Season 2 came and Fall Guy had been cancelled, so they were able to get her.

I’m flattered more than anything that a show so popular when i was a kid is getting a second act so to speak. Whether it does good or bad remains to be seen but ill keep an open mind and wish them well and hopefully they can have characters with different personalities than the original ones as i cannot see anyone replacing them. Should be interesting. My favorite was always Dan Fielding, the man made sleazy and conniving look cool.

Unprecedented number of recasts? Star Trek, in 2 1/2 years, had ONE role make it from first pilot to end - Spock. Another actress was in both, in two very different roles. First pilot had a different doctor, different captain, etc.

Judge Stone, it was mentioned in the first episode, got the job because it was a holiday so the board didn't want to take the time to go through all the files of potential judges so the picked Harry's name from the BOTTOM of the list. He ended up saving a marriage of a couple who was there for a divorce hearing.

I have been a major fan of Night Court since it first premiered in 1984 (yes I'm that old) and I just cannot see a reboot because the original was just way too good and could never be duplicated even with some of the original actors coming back (think WKRP in Cincinnati and The New WKRP in Cincinnati and believe it or not I have also been a major fan of the original version of this show too from the time it premiered in 1978), I honestly feel that some classics should just be left alone and we continue to enjoy them until the end of time!

Bull still had nearly four inches on Dan, though. What always bothered me was the wrestling promoter saying Bull had an ugly face, or even when Bull, himself, said that growing up people always called him ugly. DId no one around the man have functioning eyes? That is excellent bone structure.
