This segment was part of the original Night of 100 Stars in 1982. James Cagney and Bette Davis brought down the house when they came out at the end. Quite a moment. Apologize for the poor quality, this was uploaded from an old VHS tape.

That was so sweet. Jimmy looked so humbled and when he teared-up, so did I. I Love you, James Francis Cagney!!!

The fact he was the only star whom couldn't walk on made it even more poingnant...

You could really tell that he was genuinely grateful and moved by their thunderous cheering. You could feel the affection in their applause, they really loved him.

If I remember correctly, both Davis and Cagney were returning after significant absences due to health issues. I think this added to the emotion of both the actors and the audience reception. I remember watching this back when I was in middle school. Thanks so much for posting it!

Nope, this was in 1982 , a year before Bette Davis had her strokes and mastectomy. You'll notice that she still looked healthy and vibrant in the clip. Audiences always went wild over her.

Wow, I am completely dumbfounded by this. I clearly taped this live back in 1982. Of course, I live in Canada, and it was probably our local affiliates did some cuts to allow more commercials. I always wondered why James Stewart had so many clips but not Davis and Cagney even though they were all equals. Thanks for this revelation.

...There are precious few stars left, or actors/actresses with star quality. This is especially true of those born after 1960. ...Yes, this statement reflects the fact that I'm old (mid-40's), and remember the pre-internet world of some level of decorum.

Hace 40 años aún estaban vivas todas estas leyendas: James Stewart, Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Lilian Gish, James Cagney, Myrna Loy, Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers. Gracias por darlo todo al cine, gracias por ser parte de nuestras vidas, de dedicarse a lo que tanto amaron y enseñarnos a amar al séptimo arte con sus magistrales interpretaciones que son parte de la Historia del Cine.

biographer richard schickel once opined, wisely that the "tough guy" tagg Cagney is associated with is something of a misnomer. the man's grace and gentle manner was always there for those who see pass the crude gangster archetype. love all the people honored here, but Cagney makes the heart beat faster. so poignant.

As many in these comments have said, there was definitely something "other" or magical, unexplainable that made these people Stars with a capital S. The stars from the silents through to the 80s were definitely stars, as opposed to the personalities who just make movies today. There's a definite difference between them. Whatever they had, a lot of actors these days don't. There are some good actors today, but they're not the same. I don't know how time will judge today's celebrities, if they'll be as revered and beloved as the old stars.

Sorry, but Jezebel was in fact included, along with 4-5 other clips for Davis (Dark Victory, Now Voyager, etc), and Cagney's sequence featured clips from Ragtime and Mister Roberts, among others. I taped it back in '82 and know it by heart. Plus someone else posted it (the washed out copy) here on youtube, under the title: "Night of 100 Stars 1982 Salute to the Great Screen Legends".

@@maya8443 It's so clear that Cagney got the largest applause, they actually stood for him. Proceeding to cheer the house down, he was probably one of the only stars from old Holywood with better acting chops and more star power than Davis in their prime.
