In this Halloween themed episode, I reveal how and why I take pictures at night. Enjoy! Alan's Instagram: / alan_schaller Directed by Biz Thompson - / biz_thedirector
I’m 70, a retired photojournalist learning black and white photography, and you are not only a superb photographer but a funny and witty teacher. So glad you started a channel!
@@alan_schaller You don't shoot color, but I find that the colors are truer if one underexposes by a stop or two depending on the exact conditions in front of the camera.
Finally a street photographer who doesn't take himself too seriously, although his shots are quite outstanding. Must be this famous British humour, I suppose ...?
I've been shooting for over 40 years. From High School Photography Editor, home bathroom darkroom developer, to an almost 60 year old enthusiast with millions of exposures under his belt. You're BRILLIANT, inspirational, and artistically talented beyond what can be taught. I just purchased an M10 Monochrom and I'm glued to the screen trying to learn your techniques and copy your camera settings. Love your content and sense of humor. You keep it fun and interesting. Thank You for sharing your escapades.
@@theothertonydutch If it was only the gear I’d spend the boatload of money that Alan has spent to produce images like this. It isn’t the gear. It is what is an inch behind the lens. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Another light hearted but highly informative lesson. If only my teachers at school were this cool, who's know what I'd be capable of !! I hope these are working for you too and that you'll continue to develop these.
Love these videos. One comment as a female, early dusk for sunrise or late evening is always risky. I wish I could go outside with that confidence but experiences have me limited to how early or how late often :(
Depending on location I would not go out. During these times as a 185 m large male. Maybe joining a Photoclub and go out as a group? I prefer nature and live in Switzerland, so almost no security concerns here. Would not go out in Paris, Berlin or Marseille in the evening or night…
You got me. I for sure thought you were switching to color. I love your sarcasm and playful spirit, man. It definitely keeps me coming back, wanting more.
...More than anything. But everything comes at a cost. Theres something actually emotional and deep to this cheesy humour and I am happily eating it up. Amazing video again, Alan and Crew!!
This is outrageous! I click on this random photography video on youtube and as I watch it I realize that it is: a) fantastic b) I recognize few of the shots. I look at the name and it kind of rings the bell, but... And then that gaslamp led bulb switches on above my head! Its the Alan Schaller I follow on Instagram for a couple of years now! It is outrageous that I only find out about Your youtube channel now! But glad I got here eventually. Liked, subscribed and commented. Thank You for the great content.
Alan, I used to shoot Leica and had the m240 & 246. And I never really appreciated B&W until watching your videos. Thank you for showing us the technicals behind the shots, very informative
Highly entertaining and informative….all at the same time, no less. Really enjoying your RU-vid content ( what’s not to like? ). Excellent videography and editing, making a prediction your channel will surpass 100,000 viewers in 3 months.( or less ) Keep them coming Alan. Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada. MikeR.

ISO 20000 and 1/4000 shutter!! 🤪 I’m so glad someone as practiced as Alan Schaller also does this from time to time. I’ll feel that much better the next time I do it. Thanks for keeping it real.
Thank you for taking us with you. I always learn much from you videos and feel tremendously entertained :) For a second you got me and i thought you really want to do some color pictures :D
Yeh for sure, Hong Kong is incredible both day and night, my absolute favourite city to shoot in. And I live right next door to it :) Great video sir, thank you.
Thanks for sharing your settings tips with us, bit counter intuitive to expose -2 stops, but surely I'll try that out next time time. Just took some night shots myself in Amsterdam after loads of rain, perfect light reflections on the pavement
Really enjoying your channel. Can’t afford a Leica, but you did inspire me to adapt an M-mount Zeiss lens to my Fuji XE4 so I could utilize zone focusing🙏
I'm subscribed. I have been commenting. I have been liking. This is hands down, my favorite channel. Incredibly useful information with the perfect mix of dry comedy. I get excited every time I see a new video in my feed. Going to shoot some predawn images in Chicago tomorrow. It's no Hong Kong but it will have to do.
Regarding the image at 11:33 .... If you crop 10% off the left and 40% off the right, you have a great image. I could imagine that crop being used on the front cover of a crime novel or a mystery novel or a spy novel.
YES! Constant quality on your channel, Alan! And at least three good laughs. :-))) The -2 setting is a good tip, you really have to fool the light meter - or it turns everything middle grey.
