Terrific hard/glam rock band. This is a power ballad about the drummer's (Kelly Keagy) little sister, Christy. When the song was practiced, the words "sister Christy" sounded like "sister Christian", & there it is. The band says "motoring" refers to cruising. BTW, SOME of us who listened to Iron Maiden ALSO listened to this type of music, as well. Thanks for your reaction.
@Niecy70

I feel like motorin' means moving on fast something like that. It's just all about a a guy that wants to protect a girl that's maybe growing a little too fast in life and growing up too soon❤

Originally drummer Kelly Keagy wrote song as Sister Kristy(?) after his sister. Jack Blades misunderstood and sang it as Christian. Professor of Rock Adam Reader did an episode with band mates interviews about this song. Love your reviews and reactions.

Jack doesn't sing it-- drummer Kelly (Keagy-writer) does. So-no misunderstanding of the lyrics. Kelly always called his kid sister 'Kristy'. When Kelly wrote the song,he/they decided to change it to 'Christian' (poetic liscence). T

Kelly sang it for Jack Blades and Brad Gillis, they heard “Christian” not “Kristin”. They thought it sounded better with the latter as opposed to the former.

Nice reaction :) Night Ranger was a really good band back in the '80's. Ozzy chose guitarist Brad Gillis to play on his Randy Rhodes tribute album. The guy's a master of the whammy bar. Sister Christian was considered more of a ballad by Night Ranger. If you want to check out some really rockin songs try 'Don't tell me you love me', 'Eddies coming out tonight', 'Touch of Madness' and 'Passion Play'. You'll see a whole different side of them ;)

The drummer Kelly Keagy, who wrote and sang this song, is from Elmira oregon a little town outside of Eugene, Oregon where I lived at the time they were huge in the 80s. I delivered furniture to his Mom and Dads house. I didn’t know thats were I was going until I got there and the furniture was being put in a new addition they had just built and as I was taking the furniture in I noticed gold records on the wall and other music awards. I verified it was his parents and they said they built the room to house his music stuff and have a place for the band to hang out when they came through town. I saw them live in ‘83 at Oregon Jam and met them at a record store signing in early ‘84 and they were the nicest dudes, very down to earth.

So guys, I loved this band for their 1st single release on AOR/FM Radio "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" (from their debut album), because it was a real ROCKER, and borderlined Hard/Heavy Rock - Heavy Metal. I was wowed by the guitar duo Jeff Watson & Brad Gillis! Back then, I also heard about, and immediately recognized that the Bassist/Vocalist "Jack Blades" _and_ Brad Gillis came from the Funk Band "Rubicon" that became a bit more famous at the California Festival "Cal Jam 2" (the band was started by 1 of the Sax players in "Sly and the Family Stone"). So THIS band was something very different for Jack & Brad. But like many bands of that time that had an edge (Toto's debut album comes to mind), I was a bit disappointed that they included ballad-Pop songs (the kind of songs you could imagine were part of a "Contractual Obligation" by the Label, though who knows, you gotta' make money for the next release) and were a huge contrast from the rest of the music. This was apparent in their second album "Midnight Madness", as I was enjoying their singles "(You can Still) Rock in America", "When You Close Your Eyes" and the deeper cuts. "Sister Christian" just EXPLODED and of course, became so over-played on AOR and Pop Radio, that I was soon sick of it. I lost track of them by the 3rd album. With their 2nd album, they were featured on a ABC Late-Nite variety show on Saturdays called "The Rock Palace" (Dio, Rough Cutt, "Alcatrazz", Krokus, Quiet Riot and other bands have also been featured), which was a club called "The Palace" across the street from the Capital Records building in Hollywood. THIS is where you saw how HEAVY they could be live, and watch Jeff and Brad duel with their guitars. Jeff was the more straight-ahead player with blazing fingers, while Brad was the Heavy Metal Riff Master who also utilized the vibrato bar and the more flashy techniques. Both had their own moments to show off their fireworks with stand-alone Solo's that were outstanding. There is footage of "Tracks" from the show, but you also have this excellent concert from 1983 in Japan (with the individual solos): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oRJ42fxDnNY.htmlsi=sa4FCQZftHW6oDnI Brad Gillis was approached by Ozzy to replace Randy Rhodes, _after_ the Tour for "Diary of a Madman" and was featured in the Live album (and Video) "Speak of the Devil" (there is a whole story too that Randy refused to do the album, before his fatal accident since it was all "Black Sabbath" material). He was asked to be the permanent Guitarist, but declined because he wanted to continue with his band Night Ranger who were gaining popularity (and, working with Ozzy seemed to raise many red flags). As far as Jeff Watson, I had always wondered why he wasn't in the band anymore, and just found this: www.melodicrock.com/phorum52/read.php?1,972339,972406 (this was apparently in 2007). Jack Blades ended-up also forming "Damn Yankee's" with Ted Nugent, Tommy Shaw (Styx) and Michael Cartellone on drums (who would later join Lynyrd Skynyrd). I HUGELY recommend watching that link of the 83 Japan Performance. They put on a great show, but I was never able to see them in their hey-day. But would have liked to see them when Jeff Watson was still in the band. That "Motorin'" line I can remember many people making jokes and asking "What the hell does that mean!?" 😅 I think WE KNEW that you guys would remember it because it was all over the radio. I pretty much knew Lexi would like it for her love of the 80's. I was trying to find the most HEAVIEST music at that time (and Progressive Rock), so I was searching for more aggressive music. I'll go with Kansas "Hold On" though (the original version). But, I still don't want to call Night Ranger "Hair Metal" (Gah!). - Remember; "You're Motor'n" 😊.

Thanks for the additional information, Prof Tony 😆 I followed Nightranger for a while, too, and I think 7 wishes is the last real great song. Drummer Kelly Keagy wrote it about his little sister Christy, basically telling her you're growing up so fast and not to let guys pressure her into sex before she was ready. Jack Blades misunderstood Kelly as saying Sister Christian instead of sister Christy. Basically a big brother telling his sister I know what guys are after so be aware, The nuns are in the video because it's set in a girls catholic school.

The song is actually very wholesome and sweet. It's about the songwriter's younger sister and his fear that she's growing up too fast, and not getting a chance to enjoy life. She's "motoring" through life. If you watch the music video it shows graduation and all that so it makes more sense.

Night Ranger was a band who played AOR most of the time. AOR stands for either: Adult Oriented Rock Album Oriented Rock Arena Oriented Rock/Arena Rock/Stadium Rock This was mainstream rock in the early 80s (Journey, Kansas, Foreigner, Survivor, Triumph, Boston, Loverboy, Waysted, Reo Speedwagon, Asia) Wikipedia excerpt: The song is about Keagy's little sister, Christy. Keagy wrote the song at his apartment, near Divisadero and California Streets in San Francisco, after he had just returned from a visit to his hometown of Eugene, Oregon. He had been struck by how fast his teenaged sister, 10 years younger than he was, was growing up.[9] "After we started playing it a lot, Jack turned to me and said, 'What exactly are you saying?'" Keagy recalled. "He thought the words were Sister Christian, instead of Sister Christy, so it just stuck."[9] The lyric, "You're motoring. What's your price for flight? In finding Mr. Right?" is the subject of much debate. The band stated in a VH-1 Behind the Music interview[10] that the term "motoring" was synonymous with the term "cruising". ............. AOR was later replaced by Glam Metal (Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Poison bla bla bla) and Poser Metal (Bon Jovi, Skid Row) as mainstream rock. Glam trace their influences back to KISS, T-Rex etc Glam was the replaced by Sleaze Metal (GunsnRoses, Sea Hags, Dangerous Toys). Sleaze trace their influences back to bands like Aerosmith. Glam and Sleaze then got replaced by Grunge, Alternative, and Groove Metal. They got replaced by Nu-Metal (Korn, Shineshank, Slipknot, Linkin Park etc) and Metalcore (Avenged Sevenfold, Alesana, Trivium etc)
@narvik9035
@narvik9035 11 месяцев назад
@kbrewski1 In the German Rock radio stations, they played Glam while AOR became something old fashion. For me AOR, Glam, and Sleaze are mainly the same style musically, but glam and sleaze changed their image. In Germany we call the music American Metal as an umbrella term. In Germany, the masses listened to what was trendy and new. Glam was new when it started. Therefore, AOR became old among the fans. When GunsnRoses released Appetite For Destruction, Motley Crue etc became old fashion. AOR was not replaced but Glam and Sleaze Metal were like a New Wave of American Mainstream Rock - at least in Germany.

Then you might enjoy checking out a band by the name of Damn Yankees, that had Jack Blades (Night Ranger), Tommy Shaw (Styx), and Ted Nugent (Ted Nugent). Their song "Come Again" is excellent, as is the video for the song. And if you'll indulge me for another minute to speak on Triumph. "Lay It On The Line" gets a lot of attention on RU-vid, and rightly so. I would suggest it next for your Triumph interests, and if you're up for a deep cut from Triumph, try "Nature's Child." Kelly Keagy wrote this about his little sister, a kind of warning to her you might say. Motoring = crusin’ and looking for a "good time” (pick up)… get it now?… Moving on to another hit from 1982, and a “road” song as well, Robert Plant, “Big Log” is a must… possibly the best driving song ever recorded!!! Some other “Power Ballad” hits in the 80’s are: Bad English - "When I See You Smile”, Cheap Trick - "The Flame”, Cutting Crew - "(I Just) Died In Your Arms”, Firehouse - "I Need You Now”, Great White - "Save Your Love”, Kajagoogoo - "Too Shy”, Loverboy - "Turn Me Loose”, Scorpions, "No One Like You”, Sheriff - "When I'm With You” and Whitesnake - "Is This Love”.

(You Can Still) " Rock in America" 💯 That's the one to hit. Night Ranger is pop metal closer to Journey & Triumph really in their own lane. Only reason you would associate with hair metal is the guitar pyrotechnics. They were respected becuase of the musicianship. BTW the drummer sings Sister Christian

Hey Nick n Lex. Now you are venturing into my era. Hair mid to late 80s had so many awesome voices and guitarists. I’ll definitely keep a keen eye on what you all dig up. I could toss you a bunch of groups and songs your way but I’d never get through and go broke… lol Motoring is like driving along. Sounds better in a verse so just go with it

Guys- Night Ranger have tons of great songs. They hit with this semi-ballad,but they are mainly a very melodic rock band with other-wordly guitar work (bordering on metal with harmony lead work in most tracks). And- they are still recording/touring to this day. I suggest tapping into the greatest hits-being you are unfamiliar with them. Don't Tell Me You Love Me,You Can Still Rock In America are two huge hits. But you'll find great songs on more recent albums too. Enjoy the ride! T

Songs like this were what you got on the mixed radio shows format out in mid west america in the 70’s and 80’s when I was growing up. Keep the young people happy without offending Gramma. If you haven’t watched it when you do Metallica watch the video of the Moscow concert. Over a million people in the physical audience.

A certain generation of people…well said. I know this song because in my senior year of high school the votes for best song was “Sister Christian” Night Ranger vs “Rock You Like A Hurricane” Scorpions. Night Ranger won because all the girls in my class loved this song. LOL Night Ranger has a harder type of rock hit “Still Rock In America”.

83 US Festival featured Triumph, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osborne. Awesome performances during this event. I loved Judas Priest the most. I”m nearly 60, and saw for the first time, these performances just a few months ago. I never heard “Victim of Changes”, and practically listen to that every day now, as well as Triumph. Never really check out the Ozzy performance for this festival, but that’s next.

Great reaction! I was 17 when this album was out and I LOVED it. Never gets old and yes it WAS radio gold! Night Ranger was awesome but my other favorite band was IRON MAIDEN! A lot of us listened to all kinds of hard rock/heavy metal and I still do! “Don’t tell me you love me” rocks! That would be my recommendation for the next Night Ranger reaction.

Motorin' is another slang for Cruisin' - i.e. teens driving around town as way to meet up with others. Sometimes that resulted in everyone meeting at some location to party that was not determined ahead of time so the authorities or parents did not get wind of it. See movies "American Graffiti" and "Dazed and Confused". Jack Blades of Night Ranger went to the supergroup "Damn Yankees" with Tommy Shaw (Styx), Ted Nugent, and Michael Cartellone(now with Lynyrd Skynyrd). With Tommy and Jack on awesome vocals and Ted on the shredding guitar, they produced some great stuff in just the few years of the band. Check out the song "COME AGAIN" live from Raleigh '91 (close to my hometown) or the official video. "Silence Is Broken", "Where You Goin' Now", and their biggest hit "High Enough" are ballad/rock combo songs. Jack and Tommy are also "Shaw-Blades" doing stuff between their bands obligations.

He wrote this for his sister "Christy" but that name didn't quite sound as good. He went home to visit family for the holidays, and his sister was just getting ready to leave for college. "You're Motoring" means, wow, you are moving and growing up so fast. He was trying to tell his sister to stop and smell the roses of adolescence as long as possible. Once you cross that line of adulthood, there is no going back. (the same message Don Henley used for Hotel California.)

I saw Night pRanger play two sets at NJ's Great Adventure. I watched the day set with Anthrax. Scott Iam mocked the crap out of them. Guitarist Brad Gillis replaced the late Randy Rhodes for the Ozzy live album Speak of tge Devil. He left Ozzy because NR gotsigned. I saw NR on July 4th 1986. I had just seen Judas Priest. My next concert was Metallica.

Nice job guys that's one of those songs you remember hearing growing up but have to go online to figure out what the lyrics are haha. Back in the 90s we didn't have the ability to get on Google and figure it out quickly...also I had to walk six miles in the snow to school everyday haha jk. I'm in my late 30s so have tasted life before cell phones
