This video is from September 13, 1985 "Nightline" show with Ted Koppel. It features Frank Zappa, Donny Osmond and Kandy Stroud. The debate was over record lyrics.
At that time Frank Zappa had been making many appearances on TV in regards to this issue.
The original show was 30 minutes long. Due to copyright issues I am forced to remove ANY musical performance, the rest of the original broadcast is presented here, just as it was September 12, 1985.
Once again Kandy Stroud is concerned over lyrical content and she spends a great deal of time repeating the "offensive" lyrics and showing the "inappropriate" album covers.
This is Part 1 of the debate.

Just after Ted himself said “not yet” after Candi said “we’re not trying to take away 1st Amendment rights”.

In my 20's I started an anti censorship organization as I felt this was a serious problem. I am still opposed to censorship being a Libertarian but what happened is the labeling caused the music to become more extreme.

I completely agree with the Committee of Unified Nation Teachers (C.U.N.T) that references to sex in music is innappropriate, we, as a community 'must come down hard' on this

Man ... I had very little idea how much TV he did until recently. Hundreds of hours? maybe a hunnert? Hell ... he hosted a FNN show for a night. The guy was everywhere on the news/making the news, in the 80s/90s.

@Axeman89 I"m familiar with that interview and as you remember its something Novak didn't want to pursue. It would have been very interesting for them to have the conversation as to how each of them defines a conservative. 86 was in the big transitional period of Eisenhower style conservatives to the Reagan and beyond conservative. Sure would have been an interesting discussion but cheers to Frank for not getting sucked into tangents.

that's a funny story, that song. the original song as it was written was full of underground chitlin circuit dirty lyrics like "I can't believe my eyes, all that mess belong to you..." so when they had the white bread band record it, the producer said cut out all those dirty lyrics, and then the band said "what about the line about the one-eyed cat in a seafood store?" the producers were so square, it was gibberish to them and they said "oh, that's fine, leave that in."

The PMRC seemed to have a religious right wing attitude about sex and censorship of pop/rock/metal music at the time.
@EverSinceMyExorcism

Headed by Tipper Gore, not part of the religious right. Interesting note that Donny Osmond who is religious, is anti-censorship. The authoritarian left still thrives today with demands of censorship. The Right was certainly not blameless and has advocated for censorship. Nowadays they are mostly pro free speech.
@KratostheThird

@@EverSinceMyExorcism Donny Osmond was a very young musician, so I can understand his feelings for anti censorship. The pendulum has long shifted since this 80’s interview took place. The far left is damaging the patriotic values of America. There was a time when the right wing where anti Rock n Roll. We are at least two - three generations past that. Everybody I know who is right wing loves Rock n Roll, from Elvis up to the 80’s Hair Metal and Metallica. The left wing used to create culture. The Hippies of the 60’s were largely left wing who created and made their own music. Today the left wing are composed of authoritarians who are anti culture. Counter culture is looked down upon and silenced. The right wing back in this interview were older people with Reagan esque values. The Millennials who are right wing today want culture to thrive, while the leftists do everything to censor and ban things they don’t like. Times are different in contrast to this 80’s interview.

His appearance on Ed Sullivan offended the parents, so his second appearance only revealed his upper body. The Ed Sullivan RU-vid channel uploaded the initial Elvis appearance from 1956, which has gained millions of views. Tipper Gore herself was very young back then. Then she turned around and proposed for censorship in the 80’s like her parents generation did decades earlier.

@KratostheThird
@KratostheThird Год назад
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 That’s because back when this old 1980’s interview was made, conservatism had a different meaning. Now we have right wing radicals and far left authoritarians who are just as insufferable. There’s no proper ground anymore.
@Tyrell_Corp2019
@Tyrell_Corp2019 Год назад
@@KratostheThird Yeah. I'm a moderate myself. I believe both sides have valid points from traditional definitions. For example: Too much government? Yeah it can happen. Too little? Yeah it can happen. Taxes? Same. There's a balance that needs to be struck. But now, it's no longer policy. It's mainly a hollow and stupid cultural battle. Seems like we are waiting for the adults to arrive. For now, I'll take the democrats. I don't see how "conservatives" are going to stop drinking the Rump Kool-Aid. To be continued...
@KratostheThird
@KratostheThird Год назад
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 The moderates don’t have a party of their own. Libertarians, by their own merit, really aren’t any better than the Left or Right. Today however, Frank Zappa would likely be called a right wing conspiracy theorist. That’s how much the culture has shifted. And it’s all a smear campaign. Rational conversation is no longer encouraged.
@Tyrell_Corp2019
@Tyrell_Corp2019 Год назад
@@KratostheThird As far as I'm concerned "Libertarians" are very confused. A long conversation I'll avoid. Zappa considered himself a 'practical conservative'. He didn't care the musician's union but at the same time he wasn't against the social policies of the left. Over all I'd put him slightly left of center with some conservative ideas. I don't think for a second he'd go along with the teenagers who started QAnon. Or any of the nonsense we are seeing from that side today. I'd put in the same camp as Bill Maher today. I call him an "Age Of Enlightenment" liberal. Meaning... rational thought and the true meaning of freedom should always be in our sights. (Which is why Maher will go against the 'pronoun police' just as much as Rump)

I just laugh when I hear all the rap noise blasted all around my home and workplace. Full of the Fword the Nword and in some cases outright racist rants. Hum, in spite of local law, there is never a citation for such noise. It's not in the home or at a show, but I have to hear the crap. Did the labels help?
