Any type of contact paper would do. Doesn't need to be one of those pricey ones. If contact paper isn't available, masking tape would work too. You can tape your canvas and cut out a small circle to make a moon. Hope this answers your question.

Yes, every later of paint must dry before applying next layer of paint or the contact paper.
