Oh, I think that was their best concert with Tarja and even good old Tapio there. God bless this kind soul, for talking Tuomas into giving his 5-songs-demo tape to the guy from their very first label during the concert of Tuomas previous band (just as a member though, not involved in composition or songwriting much). And how young they look, I nearly forgot how much I crushed on short haired Tuomas back then. And even years before that, when Tarja had the same short hair, I crushed on her too. I actually crushed on everyone who had hair like young Ville Valo. Great, now I feel old.
Ah, the days Nightwish was more a powermetal band and having an operatic female voice as the lead vocals was a novelty. I don't even think symphonic metal was already a think back when this song was created, hehe. I don't go back to this show enough. It's so awesome! You ought to check out Tarja's cover of Supremacy. I can't remember the show for the life of me, but I'm sure it'd be easy to find, hehehe.
ironic..its just the opposite for me..i listen to songs from this period far more..today's Nightwish, with the exception of a few songs sounds more mainstream to me
my favorite Tarja period..she was still completing her pro level classical training but already had the power and tenor of a superb artist...this entire concert is lit...whether wishmaster, wanderlust, deep silent complete, fantasmic or swanheart...each a gem

Can't believe you guys went for this song!!! That's so awesome! First time I heard Nightwish was this album, 1997, Oceanborn, for me still their best one (yes, I know it's because it has a sentimental value). Floor is amazing, but Tarja is also not from this planet. If you want some more hidden gems go for "Wishmaster", "The Siren", "Gethsemane" and "Walking in the air". Cheers from Brazil!
Oh, for me it was my first album too, but together with their first, as they were published simultaneously in Germany (still proud of my fellow german, the band was already highly praised in several metal, gothic and rock magazines, before a german label got the publishing rights for them. Their first success story outside of Finnland was here). But that was in 1999, and the Finnland release of Oceanborn was in 1998 (1997 was Angels Fall First, with Thuomas singing the male voice, and without a bassist yet).
I like Wishmaster more. Wishmaster and Once are my fav nightwish albums. With Floor I think its more folky and progressive than older Nightwish and less aggressive too. Even though the has the perfect vocals for the band. They could go heavier with Floor on board she scream, do operatic and regular singing .

Nightwish wasn't a symphonic metal band in its early years. They had Tarja who is opera trained but other than that early Nightwish wasn't a symphonic metal band but a more keyboard driven traditional metal band. The same can be said for Within Temptation in their first record because there wasn't any symphonic metal on that record but more of a hardcore metal band mixed with keyboards. They then became a symphonic metal band for a little over a decade but now are a traditional pop based boring rock band unfortunately with Within Temptation newer material.
Did symphonic metal even exist as a genre back in those days? I think I had seen atmospheric metal to describe early Within Temptation, but yeah, that's something I'm curious about. I discovered Nightwish and other symphonic metal bands in the Once era because Nemo and Stand my Ground were on TV and on the rock radios, and symphonic metal was already and established genre...
@@nimedhel09 Back in the day here in Sweden, Nightwish was labeled as "goth metal" and occasionally "opera metal", though the latter probably rather informally. I believe that I first saw the term "symphonic metal" being used around 2003 or so to describe Epica. As for Within Temptation, I remember Swedish press referring to them as being gothic metal. Frankly though, I'd say that the first WT album definitely has gothic elements to it. I didn't like the direction that band took at all, but "Mother Earth" will always be dear to me.
@@calanor4130 I remember around 2000, they were already called 'Symphonic Metal with opera vocals' in different magazines (Metal Hammer, Rockhard, Zillo, Orkus, Sonic Seducer, etc) when writing about Nightwish, usually using Tristania as the only comparison. But actually, in Germany it was called Gothic Metal for a long time, cause it had several gothic influences (like New Wave, for example), and some bands were more gothic bands with metal influences (Neoclassical Metal, for example). Also, visually they kinda pleased both (or all) audiences. But to be honest, the german crowd kinda likes to mix. There are many bands and genres that are as popular with goths as well as metalheads, may it be medieval(ish) bands like 'Subway To Sally', or the very lyrics oriented gothic rock band 'ASP' (all in german, sorry). So, yeah.

I love how Tapio's vocals are much rougher live than on album version, suits perfectly. I wish Nightwish came back to this style, balls to the wall grandiose symphonic power metal.
That was the defining concert of their power metal period...similar superb songs are wishmaster, swanheart ( ballad), beauty and the beast, wanderlust, fantasmic, kinslayer
They had quest singer because Sami didn't sing, he didn't want to be shown on the stage either...he was always behind Tuomas. They were so young, omg Tuomas wrote amazing music in such young age.
sorry, but thats a misconception of unknown origin..Sami was very active in the band but was not a showoff or spotlighter..he did however have many novel ideas, clashing with Tuomas's vision and we all know what that means

@@Alvvays667 Yes, I know. Thank you for your cue. I'm a nightwish-fan for almost 20 years now. I think Tarja is awesome. Now I'm very happy with Floor and current line-up of band. Troy is magnificent, he is like a bit Oldfield within the band.

Baby Nightwish, i must admit though, I'm not a fan of Tapio's vocals (or guttural tones in general) so I tend to skip this one and others from the same style
Here's an intriguing thought. Floor can growl down at this level (see Soilwork guest spot). Imagine her growling the male part and singing clean the female role?
