In this video, I take a look at the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 39 Shield - basically the weatherised version of the standard Pegasus 39. To test how water proof it is I try my luck through a ford in Frensham, Surrey, UK.

This is an excellent review. Full points for the effort to simulate wet running conditions. Absolutely loved it! At the time of writing, Nike are offering 25% off two or more on conditional offer. Your review has reassured my order being the Pegasus 39 Shield rather than the Gore-Tex (review noted) primarily for cycling and running / cross training in London`s Outdoor Urban conditions.

I’ve run in the Pegasus 38 shield all year round and it’s been great in wet weather (but a big splash across the tongue area definitely still finds its way in). Got the 39 shield a few days ago and the upper is a much thinner plastic which seems to make it quite noisy when it flexes by comparison. My feet also felt quite sweaty in the them after a couple of hours which I didn’t get with the 38s. Sadly haven’t run in them yet as one of the front air pods popped while I was walking around in them 😢
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Год назад
Odd about the Air Pod popping just walking about. Hope you can get those replaced ? I did get the 38 Shield at a good discount last year but still managed to get my feet soaked on a very wet run in them although could be the usual story of the top of my socks getting soaked then water inevitably seeps down. I also have the Endorphin Speed 2 RUNSHIELD and last winter ended up doing far more miles in them even if there were more just splash proof. Know what you mean about the "noisy" feel of the 39 but it feels a bit more like true GORE-TEX in that regard and seemed from the tests I did standing in the water below the level of the laces that are more waterproof than I thought Shield shoes are designed to be. I haven't done much more than an hour at at a time in the Shield 39 so far and were fine for that but I don't have much issue with sweaty feet in any shoe.

Very amusing video. I often think about the sense of light shoes that get wet and outsole with mud so does the 30 gr saving in the upper make up for the 300 gr of water and mud? It makes sense to have a softer midsole in slippery condition because it helps with the traction. A stiff shoe will not give you much grip because you don't have much contact with the ground. Flexible with soft midsole will maximise traction. As I have wide feet and the Pegasus line is narrow this version could be a good alternative for the winter months. 👍🏻
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Год назад
Yeah when a shoe gets wet you certainly lug round a lot more ! Perhaps I should also have tested how quickly it dissipates especially if my feet keep dry. Not sure about soft midsoles. The most effective way through mud is probably XC spikes which certainly aren’t soft. Rugged outsoles usually seen in trail shoes will render most shoes stiff won’t they?
@i.p2088
@i.p2088 Год назад
@@TimGrose Yes but they have a design that release the mud quickly.. I have a few runs in road shoes like Clifton 7 and Topo Ultrafly 3 and just looking at mud makes each one hundreds of grams heavier.. With sticky mud you notice that you run on clunky shoes.. What I often don't realised was that as it rains or I accidentally hit a puddle I don't really feel wet but I get very tired legs and my run gets slow.. Then I take the shoes and socks off and boy are they soaker and heavy..
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Год назад
@@i.p2088 yeah soggy feet isn’t great which is largely why I like these sort of shoes. Obviously on “normal” runs I don’t plough through fairly deep fords out of choice :) I remember I did have to on this very one once when the water level was higher and the bridge was submerged ! It was in RC Elite v1 so they must have been less “super” for the next mile but fortunately I only had to go.

Snow test report: Peg 39 Shield in 3 inches fresh snow and 20 degrees F, cleaning off car 😂. Last weekend spectating a rainy windy marathon. Great in both conditions. Warm dry feet. Wet ankles only-that’s the fault of the qtr-socks. I look forward to running in them soon.
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Год назад
Good to hear - well apart from the temperature. It wasn't far off 20 deg C in the UK this weekend. Definitely shorts and T shirt weather on my run today and no need for weatherised shoes as did a totally dry road run. Yeah getting the exposed part of your socks wet is always the "problem" I find with weatherised shoes. The "best" ones in that regard I have had were probably the weatherised version of the Peg Turbos as they had a neoprene bootie to cover your ankles. Just felt a bit odd to run in especially as they had no laces and just a Velcro band to lock you in as it were.

I'm not sure which one to buy. I traveling for one year so I'm going to walk a lot and probably in a very different conditions. I was thinking to vie the shield version but I'm scared in summer could be extremely warn and sweaty. I'm not thinking to going for a walk in a very rainy day, but in a lot of moments I'll have to deal with some rain, wet sidewalks or a bit of snow, but also in summer really high temperatures. I would appreciate if you can give me your advice. Thank you 🙏

Tricky one but I would probably say the GORE-TEX one as just gives a few more options. That would be the one I would wear if the conditions were really wet. I also got that one when it was really hot here in the UK and didn’t have any overheating issues. Think the Shield one would be OK too and I even used them for good one time when forgot my golf shoes and worked well and kept my feet dry. Might just depend which one you like best and which colour as other options than black are available.

A bit cheeky but I was wondering if the Po10 has a processing issue at the moment. One result I was looking for from a 5 Nov XC isn’t on the site yet but have been final for some time. Also interesting to see how that feeds in the Run Britain rankings perhaps for runners who are on RU-vid.

Hey Tim, great video. Looking to buy Peg39 GTX, Shield or Trail version to try out. Looking to use them for random Parkruns which are a mixture of gravel/light trail/road (during winter). Which one would you recommend as an all rounded transition shoe between those surfaces?
@TimGrose
@TimGrose 8 месяцев назад
If pushed for one weatherised shoe, I would go for the Peg Trail 4 GORE-TEX. I have a separate video on that. That one is a good road/trail hybrid plus of course has the GORE-TEX for the best waterproofness. If you were only going to use it on the road then this Pegasus Shield but sounds like you are not. BTW I think the one they are selling now is this same shoe I tested for this video this time last year but they seemed to have dropped the "39" to avoid confusion given the regular Pegasus is now at version 40.

@@TimGrose Thanks for the reply. I don’t tend to go on trails or in the rain (where possible). Was mainly gonna wear them for Parkruns (in winter) as they tend to be a mixture of terrain. @TimGrose

@@elninochin0 ah if you actually have all 3 in hand you can of course see which feels the best. I think the Shield/GTX shoes are possibly even better when it is not actually raining as this time of year the ground will be wet but you shouldn't get your feet sodden at the first puddle like you would in a non weatherised shoe. Still think my favourite would be the Peg Trail GTX.

@@johndoe9575 I have the Peg Trail 4 GTX as well and been using both of late. The trail one is actually more of a road/trail shoe and if anything I feel it is ever so slightly softer than the Shield - perhaps due to the storm tread outsole on the Shield making it firmer to me than the standard Peg 39s. If I was doing an all road run I might opt for the Shield but if doing bit of both and/or wanted maximum water protection would go for the trail one as I did today.

Interesting, so you can expect your feet to stay dry until you get water in the lace area. How is this upper? Is it warmer than the regular Peg 39 upper?
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Год назад
Yeah it seems a lot more waterproof than Shield shoes seem to have been before. It is obviously a stiffer material so is a little more noisy. For me the upper is a bit wide so feel there is room above my toes as it were especially as the material has to fold a bit when I pulled in the laces. I never really have problems about shoes being too hot or cold but I always wear thin socks so chances of getting “hot” aren’t too high.

Yeah I have done that with some shoes but it does sometimes change the feel across the midfoot and with them already quite tight for my narrow feet danger of almost cutting off the circulation as it were. Plus I find it feels a lot slicker with "just enough" lace lengths.

@TimGrose
@TimGrose Год назад
I thought I showed in the video that the Peg 39 Shield here resists water very well. They are designed for road running in the main and to give a similar feel to the normal version. As such very good winter option when conditions far more likely to be wet. GORE-TEX is probably a little more water resistant but the Pegasus that has it - Peg Trail 4 GORE-TEX is more of a road/trail hybrid that has better grip off road. So kind of depends what you want to use it for but it might just come down to which can find cheaper and which prefer the look of. I use both.
