Great post, hearing what’s bad is actually more valuable than hearing what’s good. Truth.
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Месяц назад
Thanks. TBF some of these were "bad" for me just because the largest size they did was not long enough for me. That said it is a lesson I have now learnt myself - only buy shoes that actually fit even if need to miss out on some models. But there were indeed some truly "bad" ones and I skipped past a few more on my shoe shelves that I never managed more than a few runs in before deciding to give up on them. Think will need to do a round 2 clear out before long...

Fascinating tour through the Shoe Warehouse there at the beginning, and some really interesting ones to see there like the Peg Turbo 2 GTX. I never really hold on to that many shoes, mostly because I don' t have enough room for them. If they' re still good to run in, I put them on Vinted or similar. In the best case you can still make a little money off themm and maybe someone else can still make use of them.
@TimGrose

Yeah I was thinking do I try and put some of more "sellable" ones on eBay or a similar platform. Never tried Vinted before but have managed to sell on a fair few on eBay in the past. its funny, never had the solarglide gtx, but i had the solarglide 4 and i took that tank to over 500 running miles, than many months of wearing at work. i was having some ankle issues last week so took a break from higher stack shoes, busted out the "disaster" adizero pro from years ago for some faster road miles. the upper was still incredible, perfect. yah the ride was firm, but it felt snappy and the shoe was agile. dont think you got rid of enough shoes get back to those shelves. 😅
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Месяц назад
Glad you got some good use out of those two. TBF the Adizero Pro had my "usual" problem until very recently that adidas Adizero shoes only went to a UK 12.5 but I clearly need a 13.5 they now generally do. I remember in "lockdown" I did manage to get one Strava CR in them and did one decent "up tempo" half marathon training run but when a shoe is a bit short every stride feels a little uncomfortable even if they were at least "usable". And yes I could have cleared a lot more but then the video was already getting a bit long :)

Another cracking original video Tim. You’re bound to get more than enough on eBay to buy even a couple of shoes given how little you’ve worn some of those. @@msandiford93 in hindsight if adidas did my actual size in 4 shoes included here (including the Adizero Pro and indeed the 1st Adios Pro) you might have glimpsed I might have liked them better. @@TimGroseI remember at the time all the comparisons to it were against the Vaporfly which didn't do it any favours. As it's standalone show though I think there was a niche for it. I also liked my pair of Adizero Pro and just recently retired them after 500k. I think the upper was the best part of it. It also had decent outsole rubber coverage. Especially the Continental Rubber in front was durable. The adiwear rubber in the back was so-so.

Still using the following... Puma Velocity Nitro 2: On my 2nd pair managed to get them very cheap. Agree they feel firmer in colder temperatures and the upper is a little thick when it's really warm. Best suited to spring/autumn for grinding out the miles. Adidas SL20: On my 2nd pair and still got another to go. They're a little firm for anything over 10k these days. I agree the also seem quite short compared to other Adidas shoes. I tend to use them in the winter when it's wet as they don't seem to take on much water and the outsole is very impressive. Adidas Boston 9: On my 4th and final pair. Great shoe, love it! Use it for my long slow runs and it seems perfect for that, just enough cushioning and fairly light in my size. Nike React Infinity Run: On my 5th pair with another to go. It does take a good few runs to break in, but I can get around 1000km out of these. Mainly using them for easy/recovery runs, not the best at going round corners as it does feel a bit wide. I did get in to the habit of buying multiple pairs of the same shoe, usually if they were heavily discounted.
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Месяц назад
Yeah I got the VN2 to about 100 miles and remember doing a comparison vid with the Peg 39 and although I found the VN2 a little more "lively" I just reached for the Pegs more. And then after that "bad" experience in the VN2 that kind of did for me. I have better enjoyed the VN3 and got them over 150 miles but since got injured I have been mainly walk/running in the Peg 41 partly as easier to use an arch support insole my physio wanted me to use for now. Boston 9 in my "TTS" would have been great am sure. The Infinity ones with that bootie type upper just a bit wide for me. Agree on multiple pairs. Even now when I like to try loads of different shoes, I have had 4 Peg Turbo 2s, 4 Speed 2 Runshields and 7 Vaporfly 1s, Back in the day I had 13 pairs of a New Balance 850. I remember buying 4 at once when "found" a few more. Of course eventually they run out and the next version often isn't quite the same.

When I saw Andy FOD Runner trying the SL2 without an insole the other day, it reminded me that this Boston 7 was the shoe I did just the same on a treadmill run one time. Remember it did make me realise that the insole isn't there for decoration, it adds to the comfort, provides a little bit of cushion and helps to prevent blisters. I soon abandoned that idea! Oddly at the time the Supernova Glide 8 fitted me a whole lot better and I had about 6 pairs of them. In fact I "found" one last pair in the first set of shelves. Think might hang on to them for posterity. Otherwise my overiding conclusion from this video is that I think I have overcome FOMO and stopped buying shoes a size small "in hope" that they fit. I had Infinity Run OG. I actually ran a lot of miles (close to 450) on Infinity Run and liked it but my size is US10 so there is significant weight difference. My impression of React foam on these was OK. It softened quite a bit over time. I liked the upper fit for me although there was some negligible heel slip sometimes on one shoe (no heel counter and no runners loop hole) I have a pair of Endorphin Speed 2 RunShield which I am saving for the fall. ES 1/2 had been my favorite training shoes in resent years. I didn't like ES3 as much and opted out of ES4 (since I still have pairs of ES2). I think I will try TYR Valkyrie Speedworks instead of ES2 as I see it it is a clone of ES4 but 5mm drop instead of 8, I have had Velocity Nitro 1 and have a pair of Velocity Nitro 2 with waterproof upper for winter use. Like Speed 2 RunShield I plan to use them on cooler/wet days (fall, winter) Nothing spectacular about these other than good PumaGrip rubber for traction. I also had Adizero Pro. These were my first carbon plated shoes. The original lightstrike foam + carbon plate made a very firm shoe and thankfully there was a token of boost in the heel to soften the ride. I ran 400 miles on my pair and retired them just recently (yeah, it took years to come to that point with the frequency of use given to them). I liked the upper on those more than Takumi Sen uppers.

That said, at the time, they did seem very inferior to Vaporflys. Never tried any TYR shoes. Appreciate the timestamps, Tim! I had the Rincon 1 & 2 and actually enjoyed it until 200k when the EVA midsole started to bottom out and went flat and hurt my legs. Had to persist and retired it after 400k both version. Since then not had any Hokas cause they are so behind with their midsole however it's good to see Hoka finally changing there midsoles now to full PEBA albeit only on their high road racing shoes i.e Rocket X2 and Cielo X2. Liked the SL20 (500k) very much. It has a firm but snappy midsole which is great for intervals, workouts, tempos and easy Long runs. Can't wait to get the SL2 after raving reviews to be my do it all daily trainer this year to replace my much beloved T20 that I'm about to retire at 1000k.
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Месяц назад
Yeah those Rincons were notorious for not lasting long. At least after about 30 miles I managed in them seemed OK in that respect. If I can I try to resist wearing an "old" shoe past its useful life but that clearly varies from runner to runner. I have the Rocket X2 and enjoyed some runs in it but these days nursing an Achilles issue those lower drop shoes just seem a no no for me. SL20 I ended up reaching for quite often even if, in hindsight, was too short. SL2 is extremely "neutral" so if you prefer shoes with seemingly more "structure" like the Triumph it may not be one you would want to wear "every" day. More of a "fast" shoe IMHO.

I live in Brazil, and in the past few years, temperatures have been even more scorching than our usual tropical self (30 celsius plus, all year round) , making it unbearable to use this shoe. Besides, I don't know how the blazing pavement affects the midsole, but my pair felt dead after like 50kms, which is absurd, because the Puma Grip was excellent, but what good is it a durable outsole when the foam flattens out so quick?

Yeah in hindsight, it was "bad timing" back in 2020 when got these. I thought they were "odd" in that felt made me a run a bit differently and, in my UK 13, aren't exactly light. That said I had them in a shoeoff and did better than I thought. Shortly after I tore my calf in a track race and by the time got back to running a few months later I was then "scared" to try them again. I did do once on the treadmill and did OK. I guess now that they are essentially obsolete perhaps feel have had their moment. I also think as I always prefer Vaporflys over Alphaflys then being a clear Alphafly training partner is perhaps one reason I did not really take to them.

@@TimGroseusually I pick the AF1 for races but I went with the VF3 this year, I like the extra stack compared to VF1-VF2. This being said, for daily runs, I prefer the Tempo Next to both of these shoes ;)

Nice little round up of the retired / brick shoes Tim. That Launch 9 looks very similar to some current Brooks models but not the latest lines in the range. Good on you for passing the shoes on and not just sticking them straight in the bin. 😎🤘

Reminds me that I have a Ghost 9 lurking near to the "similar" Ghost 15. I think this was before the day an everyday runner "found" Brooks even if you think they have been the staple diet of many "regular" runners for years. Just thought I also skipped past the original Hyperion Tempo from 2020 which was a bit wide for me but surely in the same class of shoe as the latest Hyperion models. I guess one difference is that you were not a running billboard for Brooks few years ago but now got Brooks in 100 point on side of them. Is that why they now look good? Pleases the marketing people?

Interesting video, Tim. Your man cave looks like a wall in my garage. Except as the owner of The Complete Runner I mainly have my shoes supplied by brands as part of forward ordering. 6 adidas models I see which is reassuring for me as adidas is NOT one of my significant brands and those I have invested in over the last 3 years or so have not sold well. Can't help thinking those shoes you keep would stack better and be tidyier if you kept in their boxes. Asics is still my number one brand here; with customers returning for the traditional models 1000 series, 2000 series and Kayano. Yet we rarely see reviews on these! But close behind is 361 degrees brand . A great range of neutral, support models for road and some very decent trail shoes. Quality is 100%. Zero returns. Worth a try ; you will noy be disappointed! TBF adidas is normally a brand I get on with but, as I am sure you advise your customers, a shoe that is too short is no good however good it could be in the right size. Well if they did it. At least I think I have finally learned my lesson there. ASICS "annoy" me as their "best" shoes don't come in a UK 13 but at least I now resist buying a 12 in them then regretting it - like the Roadblast here and also the Metaracer back in 2020 as well. Never had a 361. Do they do a UK 13 ? As for boxes - would be tidier I agree but I would need to have much more of a clearout. I actually keep most of the shoes I wear regularly in the car - but partly due to lack of space in my "cabin". The real "idea" was to easily pluck a shoe of interest of the shelf. I guess ones I no longer wear generally aren't "of interest" !

@@fastrax1949 yeah that is the frustration for me with likes of ASICS and indeed Brooks in that they will offer their best sellers (one presumes) like the Nimbus or Kayano or Ghost (for Brooks) in all sort of sizes but don't in some of the "hype" shoes like the Superblast or Hyperion Max. At least likes of Nike & Saucony tend to make everything in their full size range.

If I get any shoe to even 300K or say 200 miles these days then it is one that I have must have liked. Even if I like a shoe a lot I typically find by 400K and certainly 500K that the cushioning has degraded too much for me. In recent years I have run about 2500 miles or 4000K in the year. I kind of figure that basically averages out as a new shoe every month even if I wasn't buying "extras" to try out for RU-vid videos.

@@bev9708 Ah I see - I tend to avoid those sort of shoes largely due to the relatively higher weight and perceived feeling of them being "hard" work. If you get the SL2 be interesting to see how you find them in comparison as got to think will feel quite different.
