The Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT% is a shoe that's designed for faster training runs, and, like the Vaporfly and Alphafly, it's a launch that's become a hot topic with runners looking for their next speed shoe.
Featuring a heap of Nike's leading tech, from ZoomX and React foam to a Flyknit upper and a carbon-infused plate, it sounds like a serious piece of kit.
Like Nike's premium race options, the Tempo NEXT% has seen widespread interest from the running community. But what exactly is a Tempo shoe and do you need one in your collection?

I love these shoes and wear them every type of run I do. I love that they feel special and make me feel fast at all times. I find them super comfy. Maybe I’ve just had awful shoes before.

suggestion switch to normal non carbon plate shoes for normal runs and you will get faster plus it feels more special when you put on the tempo's

@@Ozzy1984_ I was referring to the nike air zoom next % which has a carbon plate and air pods. I use the Nike Pegasus 38 and Asics novablast 2 for daily runs (anywhere between 4.00-4.30 per KM)

@@marcsnijders1067 I’m pretty sure the tempo next percent has a composite plate. The Vaporfly and Alphafly have the carbon plate.

I like them, the problem is a lot of testers on RU-vid haven’t tested them for long, they are definitely a grower and are great at tempo runs , I’m glad you lot didn’t follow this trend of some you tubers where if one dislikes it then others copy, 2 out of 3 is good though 👌🏻😊👍

Had this shoe almost a month. I noticed this shoe feels more great when u puts some miles on it. Just my 2cents, Peg Turbo 2 give u a good pace while Tempo Next made for keeping ur pace for longer run

Watching this review makes me relate it so much to zoom fly 3. When i first got it, I hated it and felt like i wasted my money. But after running about 100 miles, I really liked it. Now zoom fly 3 is one my favorite long tempo day shoe. But good review, based on all the reviews i read and watched from others the conclusion is right. It's a polarizing shoe.

@jaysl Definitely will, but not now. Just waiting for it go on sale. If you like ZF3 then get zoom fly flyknit(ZF2) if you can find it on sale. You will like it.

Just got this shoe and ran 8 miles first run. Really liked the ride - not too firm and not Hoka soft. Fit true to size for me. In fact, I found the toe box almost too roomy. I weigh 140 lbs and did not experience the slapping noise that one of your testers experienced.

So good to hear you love the shoe Nick! I was feeling like i was the only one! Agreed on the opinion of only for fast workouts and so loud! I cant hear it over my awesome earbuds but i sometimes get embarrassed with the looks i get. Only downside for me. Fit is awesome. Only shoe i have with perfect lock down. Love the upper. Super Breezy for our hot summers in Oz. And it just doesn’t get dirty but i think thats coz its so high.

Haha they are definitely loud, but luckily one of my running buddies uses them too so at least I'm not the only one making noise. Mine are pretty dirty now though!

I wonder what Nike intended with that shoe. The Vaporfly Next% is so popular and yet it is essentially unobtainable ( at least in Australia) , except for exorbitant prices from overseas.

Obviously this is an old video and this comment is for anyone considering the Tempo's. I've had them for a year now and I came from the Pegasus Turbo's. At the time I was very disappointed to leave the Peg's however eventually these shoes grew on me and are much faster than the Peg's were. The caveat to that is they are a tempo shoe, and only a tempo shoe. That is what I do for most of my training so they are effective for me. You need to be doing a fast pace to be blunt they aren't for people who are slow runners or just want a jog. I'd recommend around 4:00/km or faster for them to be effective, anything slower and they feel cumbersome. I'd love a pair of Alphafly's however can't justify the price for how many km's I'd get out of them which is where the Tempo is great for tempo runners. They cost less and you can get more km's because of the extra rubber on the bottom. TLDR: Definitely a niche shoe for those that are tempo runners. Don't bother for jogging or if you are slow.

The Run Testers I will, I have some low mileage (under 70) Next % and interested to see how they compare and need to decide which ones to run virtual London in (which will be my first road Marathon)

@@TheRunTesters got them yesterday and ran for the first time in them this morning. Way more comfortable than the Vaporfly (in my opinion) but the Next% give more rebound. I feel I will get more use out of these as they are just so comfortable to run in, like a real quality glove!

@@TheRunTesters Can I ask a question please? I need a little advice? I ordered a pair and received them yesterday. The insole on the left shoe isn't fully stuck/glued down at the heel and "pops" up a little. The remainder of the insole seems well glued. Reluctant to send them back...but wondering if you think this could be an issue going forward. Thank you.

I logged 600k with them and just completed Barcelona marathon in 3h11ish.(PB). Ultra dynamic and fastest shoes I ever owned. The squeaky noise and loud sole are fun when running on crowded routes :) I haven't tried every single shoe on the market but I definitely found my perfect shoe here especially since I got them for 130 euros. As commented above, those shoes are great if you run at least at 4:30/km. I never run slower than that myself so this is perfect. In preparation for my marathon I was having some issues with my knee and Achilles tendon but all that went away when I exclusively ran in the Tempo. I was even able to run two 40k runs in two weeks without feeling the need to take some time off. The pods might give a funny feeling if you land on the side of the shoe that is true. I am learning to land more square now in those. Perfect shoes for every run as every run is tempo or race pace for me :). Now if only I could get a new pair at 130 euros again....

I got them for $90 at a Nike store a serious bargain no doubt. Only ran in them once. Very weird sensation they definitely feel awesome when you run fast. My goodness they are really loud. I am looking forward to putting more mileage on them. Besides everything else they are beautiful.

WAF clarification for trail and mountain races is "any thickness" and these work if trails not technical,,maybe gravel/dirt roads.

Very cool review! What did you perceive of wear on the rubber of Tempo? Is it the same rubber as AlphaFly?

It's a different rubber and there more of it on the rear of the sole. No signs of wear on mine (Nick) yet, should be pretty durable

For heel strikers who wanna run faster, do you know of better? A supershoe with training wheels. Firm, locking heel makes u push forward and hit the bubbles. Gives u an extra joint, transforms heelstriking into forefoot. Make legs last long hard runs, and avoid injuries. Got slight piriformis issues only w. 80-90km weekly going for 2 yrs now. (Don´t forget ur daily glucosamin dose!) Forefoot strikers soon get the pods cut through outsole. Pods burst sometimes, usually that cutting through is what kills these shoes. For me, 60kg heelstrike i can usually do over 1000km in a pair. Frontal Zoomx crumbles, pop flattens. But that front softness gets softer actually, good enough for training. Only for heavy trails i want normal shoes. (Rbk Floatr. Energ. 3-4 super solute ride!) Half size up is OK w. Tempos i reckon.

I wanted to wear the Zoomx Tempo in my upcoming 19k mountain race but decided not to wear due to weight its legal for mountain races.: 6m up and back 2k ft. each way. Will wear Adidas zero pro instead.

The outsole of the airpod unit stretchs and contracts allowing some flexibility in the midfoot. I have never seem an outsole piece stretch an contract that way. The rubber goes up in that space and comes back down as the shoe returns its shape. Weird.

Why don't Nike make a closely equivalent (but longer-lasting and cheaper) training version of their race shoe? For example, the Tempo has a 10mm drop whilst the Alphafly 4mm. I've always thought it sensible to train in the "same" shoe as you race in to limit difference and race-day surprises (but obviously, a £270 Alphafly designed to only perform over a few hundred miles makes this impractical). I understand having a "quiver" of shoes and not running in a carbon-plate all the time but surely you want to put in some miles in an otherwise similar race shoe. Is my old training approach flawed? What am I missing that you and Nike may be able to explain in their shoe range offering - why isn't there a 4mm drop training companion to the Alphafly?

yes they are noisy and can be a bit clunky at slower speeds, but they just helped me take 4 mins off my 10K PB yesterday so all's well :-)

I'm a middle distance runner, and I currently use the zoom fly 3's which I love. I'm looking for a versatile shoe suitable for intervals, tempo runs and longer runs, like a daily running shoe. I do my long/easy runs (10 miles) at 4min/km, tempo runs/fartlek at closer to 2:50-3:20min/km. Typical track session for me would be 16 x 400m at 60 seconds/rep. I'm really confused about the reviews for this shoe because they're so mixed. Do you think these would be good for me?

I ran 1.5 miles in 12 minutes in these for an exam. They are great shoes but as a new runner I don’t think I can tap into the benefits yet as I can’t run at a pace faster than 8 minutes yet.

Bought these as a race shoe seeing all the tech from the alphafly, watching all the reviews I still don’t understand why everyone is saying it’s not a racer other than the 70g difference?! As a midfoot strike, neutral runner, the foam and pods are the same with a slightly less stiff plate. Would like to understand before I wear the shoes outside and can’t return them

Hi so we talk about this in the video, but for one the stack is too high to be legal for road races. But also we felt that it simply wasn't as fast and responsive as true racing shoes

Can you qualify why? Or quantify in numbers? If the materials are the same in the forefoot is it just the feel or is there a measurable difference in speed/stride length/propulsion

It starts with the weight, as you mention, which is a significant difference. The plate is also not full length in the Tempo, and not as stiff as carbon, and slightly difference shape, which means it's less propulsive. I (Nick) was impressed by how the Tempo felt at speed, but raced 5K in the Alphafly at weekend, it's another level.

Has anyone with these shoes experienced a squeaking noise when running in them? After about 50 miles my left shoe starting making a squeaking noise whenever I run and it is quite annoying, is there a fix to this? Is this a common issue?
