This week outrageously wickedly funny comedian and actor Nikki Glaser (The Nikki Glaser Podcast, FBoy Island, Nikki Glaser: Bangin') stopped by the podcast to discuss all manner of important and vulnerable topics ranging from the struggle to be more present, to the art of feeling your feelings. She opened up to us about what it was like to be raised by an anxious parent and how, after therapy, her relationship with both of her parents significantly changed. Nikki revealed the origins of her previous suicidal thoughts, how she went from being scared of boys to being known for her overtly sexual humor, and why she is considering a major life change - a transition away from stand-up comedy. She bravely discusses her disordered eating and body images issues, the heartbreaking experience of losing a friend to suicide, and her decision to stop drinking. Mayim and Nikki consider the benefits of weighted blankets, explore sex drives and feelings of attachment, and explain why they are both grateful that social media didn’t exist when they were young. Mayim explains the neuroscience behind picky eating in another installment of Ask Mayim Anything.

As a therapist I can affirm so much of what is being said, but I wish someone in my profession had been there to help earlier in their life. Close to the end she talks about "beating herself up" about something and she is so right. I'll ask clients, "How much has beating yourself up helped so far?" No one has ever said, "it helped.' This is the first time I've seen this podcast. two thumbs up.

I am 75 years old, many times things were said that brought tears to my eyes. Too many issues were delt with, I still have things that were said by my parents that rear their ugly heads to this day. Kudos to all of you to bring this to the surface, thank you Nikki for your honesty and to quote a miss used statement " I feel your pain"

While waiting at Barcelona airport to my flight to Lisbon, this podcast was my companion. How brutally raw and honest are Nikki’s thoughts. Self forgiveness, love to oneself…that’s what I get from today’s episode. Such important and relatable points we use to forget in our daily troubled life..or voluntarily or not we keep them hidden in “the closet” of our brain..This podcast is going better Tuesday after Tuesday! 💎Thank you to you both, fabulous Mayim & Jonathan! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I'm 50/50 on Mayim's podcasts - it depends on whether I know the guests. But I really love this one... and it's really eye-opening yet reaffirming to know that people that seem so strong are just as fallible as the rest of us.
@RosscoPeko187
@RosscoPeko187 2 года назад
Just curious? Why does it depend on whether you 'know' the guest? If anything these podcasts create empathy, that without experiencing what they have experienced, we get an insight into what they went through and can feel just a little bit of it ourselves and preferentially be more conscious of it in the future. I've never experienced an eating disorder, but from hearing Nikki talk about it so openly I can imagine how I would feel if I did based on Nikki's account. I then have a smidgeon of an understanding of it so I can empathise with anyone I know in my life who HAS experienced it! What makes you 50/50 on Mayim's podcasts out of curiosity? Not an attack, just curious :) It sounds like you've definitely listened to more than one? :)
@HH-gv8mx

I know the guest. The podcast is still good but Nikki is chin deep in denial about her very much active eating disorder, her addiction to speed Adderall ADHD medications. She’s shallow and narcissistic. And seems to be getting worse. Her entire podcast she focuses on other peoples bodies and superficial bullshit. It’s too bad.

It’s so fascinating to hear peoples stories and to begin to understand what makes us human and how we all operate. Jonathon seems amazingly secure. Mayim tends to eyeroll and cut him off when he hasn't made his point. Maybe she knows his story and can jump to the end but we are watching and listening to gather insight and perspective. So an inside story is defeating my purpose for watching. I was amazed at how much mic time Nikki got. Bravo on that. She has an interesting arc. I've been a fan of hers for years but never knew of her struggles.

Thank you Nikki, Mayim, Johnathan, and team for this interview. Near the end when Nikki was talking about eating the row of cookies, and the different reactions we have, it made me think of 'the second arrow' concept that i learned about from Tara Brach. It is a part of Buddhism. Basically our reaction (second arrow) to a negative situation or something 'bad' we did often causes as much or more angst than the original event (fist arrow). I have learned ( am learning) from my therapist to use , try to feel, more compassion towards myself in these situations to ease, soften, how i react. It's alot of 'work' to make such a big change, but i hope this helps someone.

I enjoyed this so much - this was a lively, intelligent, emotional funny conversation between interesting, insightful people. I first became aware of Nikki through her appearances on "@midnight" & was an immediate fan of the style & delivery of her humor. Always tuned when I saw she was appearing on something in the ensuing years. I had no idea of her struggles until this podcast. And I could relate to so much of what was discussed here, from the use of ANYTHING to avoid or stuff feelings to having fear instilled at an early age to the coping mechanisms we can learn through recovery...and so much more! Most of all I want to say how much my admiration & respect for you, Mayim, continue to deepen as I watch more & more of these. I respect so much what you've done with your life & how you've navigated the unexpected changes life has brought. I connect with your sense of humor very very much, but I also love how the breadth of your knowledge ebbs & flows through the conversations, dovetailing with that humor. Absolutely fascinating - love your guest! Also, the wrap-up topic about dislike of certain foods & allergies - my mother-in-law has a ton of allergies & intolerances & swears this is true. In seeing my own allergy testing (mine are minor; nothing life-threatening) I can see some of my childhood / current dislikes match up, as well. Unfortunately I REALLY like some of the things that my body doesn’t, so that might water down the “your body just knows...” argument. I wonder how many of those items are massively processed foods vs. foods in their more natural variety, though. Food for thought...(pun intended). 🤔

@Jonathan - loved the extra rapid question and the post interview analysis about parents being dismissive. I think you’re def on to something re: anxious and/or avoidant attachment & parents being dismissive affecting future vulnerability (& emotional expression). Brenè Brown has a great story about this in Gifts of Imperfection when her parents were dismissive about her looking out of place and not making the color guard team. Brown points out the seemingly insignificant event mattered due to the combo of identity development, social groups, vulnerability and shame.

48:34 is so poignant. Someone's "bad decision" may be the lesser of two evils in their own lives. Returning to an addiction may be better than suicide for many individuals. Similar to crippling anxiety or gender dysmorphia, other people cannot physically see the inner turmoil that is the amalgam of an individuals circumstances.

Such a great episode, Nikki Glaser is fantastic. I loved the Ask Mayim Anything question cuz I am such a picky eater. It's hugely a texture thing with me. Glad there's nothing wrong with my brain cuz I don't like vegetables. 😛

Great podcast 👍 Could totally relate to how her parents were. My mom (bless her soul 🙏) barely let me cross the street til I was like 10 🤣

Gabor Mate would be a good person to talk to on addictions and its reasons...he talks about addiction is always a rational response to deal with pain or trauma..he says it's not why the addiction but why the pain.
