The only reason Haley won in Vermont is because it has an open primary, meaning you can vote in either one of the two primaries regardless of which party you are registered in. The Democrat primary was never in contest, so a lot of Democrats voted in the Republican primary. Vermont is a flagrantly blue state. 60% registered D and only 30% register R. But in yesterday’s primary there were more total votes in the Republican primary. So, yes, Haley gets the democrat votes. Big deal.

Vermont residents are actually open to voting for Republicans, too. We’ve elected and re-elected a republican governor several times now and he has one of the highest favorability ratings of any state governor. People here just aren’t hard partisans all the time.

VT isn't even troubling for Trump because it is solid blue, what is more troubling is that Nikki is getting 20-40% in battleground states where only Republicans can vote. Trump lost 37% in Colorado, 32% in Minnesota, 27% in North Carolina, 23% in Texas, 37% in Virginia. Basically 33% of Republican voters in competitive states are voting against Trump.

That’s not remotely surprising. Many Moderates/Centrist Conservatives find Trump’s toxic campaign style off putting. They are also probably worried about him getting convicted before election day and how that will impact independents.
