Sadko (musical tableau), Op.5 (1867 rev. 1891-92)
Dedicated to Mily Balakirev
Evgeny Svetlanov conducting the USSR Symphony Orchestra
Sadko (Russian: Садко) was a legendary hero of a Russian bylina (a traditional East Slavic oral narrative poem). A merchant and gusli musician from Novgorod, he is transported to the realm of the Sea King. There, he is to provide music to accompany the dance at the marriage of the King's daughter. The dancing grows so frenzied that the surface of the sea billows and surges, threatening to founder the ships on it. To calm the sea, Sadko smashes his gusli. The storm dissipates and he reappears on the shore.

I love the slow rhythmic low strings of the opening... always made me feel as if I was floating in a deep calm blue ocean-only later did I realise that the story of Sadko involves him visiting an underwater kingdom. Glorious stuff.

Probably one of the best openings to a piece I have ever heard. It doesn't always need to be loud and fast to grab the listener's attention.

Rimsky-Korsakov is an incredible neglected composer in western orchestral (operatic) repertoire. Great music and you clearly hear his influence on Stravinsky.

The first two measures kind of remind me of opening of The Firebird, of course Rimsky-Korsakov composed this (the tone poem, that is) before Stravinsky was even born. At least the rhythm is very similar to Firebird.

Stravinsky learned from Rimsky. He studied with Rimsky Korsakov, even writing a Piano Sonata to prove his talent as a composer.

@@mikefuller9073 I'm sorry, but Stravinsky wasn't a greater genius than Rimsky-Korsakov; nor is his music superior.

The United States has never had the time of peaceful creation. A long time ago before Radio or Tv broadcasting sound people had extraordinary amount of time to perfect something. Wood working a violin or a cello may be a hand/lap stringed piano or harp to slowly over time make this beautiful concerto of sounds all combined to make an orchestra. Even the creation of a single sound is almost a 100 year process and all sounds make up notes -music notes to a concerto all combined to give your senses an imagination. The greatness of Novgorod with all its folklore and creation of saints, saint Sophia cathedral which was built between 1045 and 1052 is the oldest cathedral in Russia. It was built by both Russian and Byzantine masters who managed to combine both styles with the character of climates and peoples of the north. The music of this time period has an appeal of the saints of Faith, Hope and Charity. The folklore stories become the inspiration for the musical concerto that always features a part for a soloist a likened to the round obelisk or stone pillar monument in 1859 of the history of the Russian statehood. Music is a quiet and peaceful journey of the mind...orchestras came to be held with the utmost regard. thanks for posting this
