We use the Nikon 60mm 2.8 often. Very sharp. For macro you will need to use a tripod as the focusing can get out of focus easily. We use the digital zoom focusing feature to nail the focusing area. You can also get a similar macro image with a 50mm lens combined with a +1 close-up filter. Comparing images from both setups yields almost identical images.
I like both, but the 60 2.8D is used more indoors for forensics w/ macro lighting or document scan & close up details where room to move around is required. The 105 is awesome outside or for close up art work with minimal showing. If on travel or in a kit bag, it's the 60mm macro 1st. So versatile.
I have the G version of this lens and agree it's a great lens. I would say in terms of macro specifically I prefer to use either my Tamron 90mm or Sigma 105mm just because I find I'm too close to the subject at 60 mm focal length. So if I were buying this for macro only I'd steer towards a longer focal length. It does a great job of portraiture and I've used my 60 mm many times, however 60 mm is a bit long in my opinion ( especially on DX ) as a walk about lens for street photography.
dunnymonster I totally agree with you. I had the 60MM 2.8D FOR 2 YEARS. Too long for street photography, not enough for great macro like the 100 mm 2.8 macro Tokina. I own 2 Nikon D700s and have the Nikon 85mm 1.8 which kicks assume on the 60MM dx on its worst day. The walk about lens thing is kind of a fad. Every channel is jumping on the band wagon to catch up with A.P. since he promoted this lens years before and sadly they won't admit it. I dumped the 60MM D and with no regret as people look clinical at best and no 60MM is going to give you a true macro of 100mm and that is that!
I bought the 60mm for photographing the negatives on the negative digitizer kit on my Nikon d850. I always only used it for that, until last weekend I actually took it out to take some pictures of my nieces/nephews and as a general walk around lens around our ranch. I was absolutely BLOWN away at the image quality. Just totally shocked at what it could do for 250 dollars. I'm going to start using this lens way more often now! ps: Use in good light or on a tripod when you can! This lens on the D850 is unforgiving if technique isn't spot on!
Just bought an immaculate 60mm F2.8D for £199. So far used on a Nikon D2x and a D500. Great macro and super sharp as a walk around. When I think how much an equivalent Z lens would be for my Z7!!
For a macro lens, used as such, I much prefer a longer focal length. Auto-focus should not be an issue as macro lenses end up being manually focused anyway. A macro lens to be used as a general purpose lens is pretty limited in choice, s the 50-60mm focal length has few options. IMO the predecessor to the 60mm 2.8 Micro-Nikkor is preferred, as the 55mm 2.8 Micro-Nikkor is somewhat superior to the 60mm at normal focal distances. The 60mm is slightly better in the "macro" range. Both lenses focus down to 1:1, but the 55mm requires an extension tube to do it, whereas the 60mm focuses continuously down to 1:1. Almost all 55mm lenses were manual focus, however just before it was replaced by the 60mm, the 55mm was briefly made in an auto-focus mount - probably hard to find one.
Especially lately, I've been considering the 60mm AF-D to replace my 50mm 1.8 G. My 50 has an issue where it won't open all the way up to f/1.8, and for portraiture, I wouldn't mind that extra reach on my APS-C camera (trusty D7100).
I have the 90mm f2.8 Tokina lens which is a little disappointing, the 55mm nikon old manual focus macro which is pretty good if I can get the focus just right and the 60mm nikon AF that you're holding.....the 60mm lens is excellent when I step it down to f16
I have a 60/2.8 and a 100/2.8 with IS. Of the two, the 100 is my fave due to the greater working distance and the IS. It also serves as a portrait lens on FF and crop.
the tokina 100 is awesome. yes i am always editing out the chromatic aberration with ease, but the bang for your buck is there. I have heard amazing things about the 60D but have you considered the 55mm 2.8 macro D? its all about the legacy.
I just got one for 40 us dollars plus 200 pesos more here in Tijuana Mexico, the extra 200 pesos where for the guy to get closer to me it is equal to like 10 dollars,so i paid about 50 dollars for mine.
Love this lens along with the older Nikon AF 105mm f2.8 micro both of them offer fantastic image quality and imo having used both Newer AFS versions the older ones offer supper image quality 😊👍🏻 excellent review.
I have both the 60 and 105 mm 2.8d macro lenses. Really like them, but my live view doesn’t work on my D500 when using them. Anyone else have this problem?
I watched a video of another RU-vid who claims that this lens has radioactive coating. I have this lens and I love it. Do you have any information about that claim? What about the 80-200mm as he said the same about it. I have both of these lenses and love them. Thanks for your great videos.
Just to clarify, does this lens have a built in motor for auto focus? Would it be comparable with say the d5300s that doesn’t have an auto focus motor?
