The Nikon 70-200 f4 is a fast focusing lightweight sharp lens. I owned it for less than a month and then returned it. In today's video I'll tell you why and why it might not be right for you either.

I'm into hiking and landscape photography. The 70-200 F/4 is the perfect lens for my kind of shooting. And yes, it is razor sharp!
@BillEricPhotography
@BillEricPhotography 2 года назад
That is a great lens for landscape photography. Small sharp and you really don't need 2.8 if that's what your shooting!

Hi Tom, how do you find the compression with the lens? I am just about to buy it and then came across this video ! Not worried about the boukeh, but that compression effect I would really like =D

Thank you for your review , it was especially helpful because you assess the same characteristics I’m concerned about. I think the lens may be discontinued soon, though😮 One thing holding me back from most offerings of the 70-200 is the focus breathing issue, which Tamron definitely has. It’s an issue because inside of 15 feet most of these lenses’ actual focal length begins to shorten and they don’t produce the background compression and OOF blur you talk about. For the last 20 years I have been using the same 80-200 2.8. because it doesn’t suffer this shortening and is 200mm even from 6 feet away. The 70-200 4vr maintains its focal length to 3 feet, which is why I’m interested in it.
@BillEricPhotography
@BillEricPhotography Год назад
That's never really been an issue for me. Maybe I just don't worry about it. But I would think that the 2.8 would give you a little bit more had a focus area than an F4.
@mikelopez8564
@mikelopez8564 Год назад
@@BillEricPhotography I should have mentioned the Nikon vr and vrII have this focal shortening problem as well and it begins inside of a subject distance of 15 feet. Focal length, subject distance and aperture all play a role in creating the dreamy backgrounds we like so much. Nikons vrii is actually 135mm at 5 feet and I think that would drive me crazy, but plenty of folks are fine with it. However, 200mm can blur backgrounds a lot more than 135mm, as well as compress perspective. But the lens must actually reach 200mm to accomplish that. Compound this with the fact many of these 2.8’s actually have a T stop of 3.4 and now you’re only 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop gained. Thank you again for the video. It’s probably the most helpful I’ve seen on the f4!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I still use the Nikon 80-200 mm f/2.8 and love the image quality.

My 80-200 (2 ring) is twenty years old this year. It struggles to focus below 105mm and the A/M ring is busted. It got lots of use on FM bodies and once transitioned to digital continued cranking out gorgeous pics. I did just pick up the f4 though and am very happy with it. VR is crazy good and find 1/60 sec at 200mm is pretty cool.

I almost bought this lens, but found the Tamron 70-200 f2.8(first version), I’m very happy with it. I think Tamron makes a great lens.

It's a great lens but I think the 2.8 versions of the Tamron and Sigma are a better choice.

When I needed a longer lens than Nikkor 85mm f1.8, I considered many options. First was 180mm f2.8 Nikkor; that left a big gap up from 85mm. The Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 was to big, heavy and expensive. Also looked at a few third party f2.8 zooms. Had to wait a number of months for the f4 Nikkor to come in...but glad I did. Mostly use it inside with available light. Rarely do I miss the option of a faster zoom. In film days you were mainly limited by film stock. Today with DLSRs, ISO is not a problem. Shooting at ISO 3200 gives great results on my D610. The 3 to 4 stop VR feature is icing on the cake.

Doesn't make any sense. if you need more shallow depth,use a prime portrait lens. Thank you for helping me choose the Nikon. If you work with focal distance and subject distance you get very shallow depth with a f4 lens
@BillEricPhotography
@BillEricPhotography 2 года назад
I agree, you can make it work by shooting at 200 mm and creating compression but the same shot with a 2.8 is going to have a softer background.
@carlosandreviana9448
@carlosandreviana9448 2 года назад
@@BillEricPhotography you don't need 200 mm to get that. I can't understand this obcession with soft backgrounds. When I need that I use a prime lens And this nikon is so much lighter and better.
@BillEricPhotography
@BillEricPhotography 2 года назад
Everybody has a different shooting style and of course you can use a 50 mm prime but at 200 mm You get a different look with portraits. It's just the way it is. Baby for your style of shooting you don't need it but I know the way I shoot I like to shoot at 2.8 at 200 mm. There are so many factors that go into buying a lens. I don't mind carrying around a big heavy lens but if you are always on the go this F4 might be perfect for you.

Thanks for the review and understand why you didn't keep it. Can you speak at all on the quality of shots with the f/4 in lower light conditions? I'm looking for a 70-200 for low light shooting. Being able to walk around with the lens and shoot without a ton of weight is important in this environment. Will be shooting with a D7200. I thought I might have to have a f/2.8, but maybe not? Thanks!
@BillEricPhotography
@BillEricPhotography 3 года назад
You might be able to overcome that one stop of light if you have a camera that has good low light capability. The $7,200 is a good camera but it's a crop sensor so it's not going to be as sensitive to light as a full-frame camera. That combined with the F4 aperture might not make it the best choice for low light. It's a very good lens It's sharp and fast focusing but if low light is your concern I think you might want to take a look at a used f 2.8 or even something from Tamron, Sigma or Tokina.

Let’s be honest, if I had the money to get the 70-200 Nikon VR, even if its VR2 instead of the VR3 that the 70-200 f4 has,I would get it. It, I really prefer F4 it over 70-200 f2.8 from tamron and sigma. My main use for telephoto is wildlife, and given its superb VR capabilities and light weight it is a no brainer. For stills, I can shoot at 1/15 handheld and VR is like magic!! Ultra sharp & well exposed images!!, Sure, the only thing is that creamy background. But, at F4 you still have a pretty good bokeh, you just need to separate your subject a bit from the background objects and it is done. I’ve tested the sigma 70-200 2.8 and the VR is CRAP so I would never change my Nikon f4 for that lens. I prefer to buy a brand new 70-200 2.8 Nikon, when the money is available.

It's a terrific portrait lens If you are taking pictures of groups of people it may be a little too long for that. A 24 to 70 is probably a better choice if it's your only lens. But the 70 to 200 is an excellent lens for shooting portraits of one or two people.

nikon 70-200mm f/4 is costlier than tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2, so its better to buy tamron which image quality is sharper than nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II lens.

It happen that I bought a Tamron f2.8 didn't work try a second one was way to soft and test Nikon f4 and it's amazing, I have own this for over 2 years and still love it, note that I own a 85mm 1.4g and that enough for me as fast lens with my 50 1.4.... The rest that I use together with my z6 are 16-35 f4, 24-70 f4s, 200-500mm but the 85mm is my go for boka
