15:41 Image Examples 21:06 Verdict
A review of my recently purchased Nikon 180mm ED lens. Includes a description and discussion, a look at the case and box and example images/video. Example subjects include a heron, the Aberdeen harbour pilot and some offshore supply vessels.
TL:DR It is excellent in terms of image and build quality, but does not have the latest features such as AF-S or VR.
It has 9 aperture blades. I fluffed the focus mode description somewhat, you have to use BOTH the camera and lens switches when you change between auto and manual focus.

Filmed with Nikon D610, 180mm f2.8, 55mm f2.8 and 24-85mm AF-S.

This lens was NEVER designed for video usage... sooooooo... be happy with the amazing subject isolation and bokeh you're gonna get shooting stunning portraits with it... and THAT'S IT!

That's fair, old lenses aren't meant for video but worth trying them to see if there is a use they're suited to

If you can focus manually, it works like a charm on a Z body (especially so with the IBIS).

Looks like this lens is now discontinued probably due to high manufacturing costs in Japan. Just bought one and can't recommend it highly enough - it's a legendary lens.

The 24mm and 28mm ai/s, the 200mm f4 ai, are all VERY good as well. There are numerous legacy lenses that are very good performers and depending on the focus peaking and IBIS on the new Nikons they may make a huge comeback for portraits photographers.

How does it compare on fx to dx, just got one for my 7500 cheers

@@ironmantooltime it's going to be a reality tight shot on the DX... the compression/bokeh is going to drive you insane!!!.. Tip of you shoot JPEG: download the some CUSTOM PICTURE CONTROL FILES and load them on your camera. Simply do a Google search for NIKON PICTURE CONTROL and a site will pop up...

@Eric Parker a few things. You really need to use this lens on a tripod/monopod on the D850. Chromatic aberration outdoors between f2.8-f4 is noticable but correctable.. (no big deal) Lens is outstanding on the Z system (manual only) but with IBIS and focus peeking... It's a keeper and a great alternative to the Nikon 200mm

For the video focussing noise... Just use manual

It does not show CA aberrations, the 135mm f/2.0 DC does have CA I'm hopping for a AF-S 135mm ED f/2.0G soon....

I have both 135 and 180. I am a professional portraitist. I use the 135 for headshots at about 7' I cannot get both eyes reliably sharp if the nose is at all off the camera axis until I reach f/3.2. At that aperture, CA is GONE. I shoot in Realville, not test patterns. Don't listen to the moron testers who don't take pictures.

I got the Sigma ART 135mm f/1.8, you should try it, ultra sharp at f/1.8 and creamy bokeh. The only think I don't like about that lens is the fact that manual focus rotation ring is inversed compared to Nikon lenses. :o)@@mrca2004

whats the difference between the AF an the IF in the name labels
@tombo1bo
@tombo1bo 2 года назад
AF is obviously Auto Focus, IF means 'Internal Focus; - the lens uses internal elements to focus rather than moving the whole lens in and out. It has the advantage for longer lenses that the big, heavy front element doesn't move when you focus. Since fewer lens elements are moving AF is faster, but there are manual focus IF lenses too.

Why no just get the 80-200 F2.8 ?
@Cagey7531
@Cagey7531 3 года назад
The 180mm [ED versions at least] are smaller, lighter, sharper, better bokeh and not everyone needs the wider end. Nothing wrong with the 80-200, love that lens myself but it is a Hulk of a thing to carry about

it's soooo hard to listen to this video, even though I like it. The voice over is too low compared to the music. Also, when you do voice over your samples, it's so garbled sometimes it sounds like you're chewing something.

Since the diaphragm blades are exposed in the rear, how do you clean them if dust or other junk collects on the blades without damaging the blades? And God forbid, if dust accummlates on the rear glass element beyond the exposed blades, how do you ever get rid of the lens dust so the glass is clear again? That stupid design, no matter how good the optics is when the lens is brand new, is in my opinion a deal breaker!!!
