Funny story ...I had finally decided to buy the Nikkor 50 mm ( all the hype about nifty-fifty etc ) and my wife told she would buy it for me for Christmas. When the box came it turned out she had mistakenly bought the Nikkor 35mm. So instead of getting annoyed at her , I decided to do some research to find out which was better. It turns out that the 35mm is actually perfect for my style of photography and since I have a D5600 body I'm still getting the "50mm look"......so I'm keeping it !! Thanks.
Just got this and I’m blown away by how much better it is, especially indoors, compared to the kit lens. Can’t wait to try it outdoors once the rain goes away.
I have the same camera and I bought 35mm lense as my first prime lense. 35mm is more verstile than the 50mm lense as 50mm is usually great for portraits only. 35mm is good for portraits too but bokeh effect isnt as melted as 50mm but still good enough. Also 35mm is useful for street photography and landscapes as you can get more in the picture. Hit like if it has answered any of your question.
Do you mean the 35mm lens on the crop sensor bodies like the Nikon D3500? (since its still 50mm ish once u factor in the crop). But yeah i def agree! This 35mm lens is the way to go, the 50mm lens will be TOO cropped in once u add in the crop factor.
I've just buy the D3200 with the 18-55 mm and the Nikkor 35mm 1.8. Just thank you for the review, very complete for starters like me. (Sorry, my English is bad because i'm French)
Andrei Ghetau just trying to help u since you are from France :) but I noticed you don't want help. fine by me :) I'm from Belgium, so yes useful might be with 1 L . sorry for that :) at least I dont curse at you for that :)
Thank you steven for this amazing review. Sometimes its not so much the technical side but more so just showcasing what the lens can do. Beautifully edited and great choice in instrumental piece
Great review! I think is really cool you used an "entry level" camera for the shots. It proves that good photographys dont come out only from pro cameras. And eventhough you say you are starting on photography, this video shows that you have done a lot of research on the subject and you know what you are talking about.
+MrWebon I have the 50 mm and I love it. Now I'm thinking about getting this one. The price is right and it's a prime lens and I'm really liking prime lenses.
+Steven Sampson quite agree with MrWebon! your video production skills are on point...and that soundtrack was amazing! who is it?..also, what would you say is the sweet spot aperture on this lens is for front to back sharpness? thanks
+MrWebon I had the standard 18-55mm and the expensive 16-85mm. None of them I liked very much. Then a proffessional photographer told me to get the 35mm prime. I did and I can say it is by far the most sharp lens. It is so good its unbelievable that is costs so little. It transformed my photography.
Very proper and in detail review and video for someone new to photography. I hope you are very successful in what you wish to accomplish with photography. You sound like someone proper and someone who does everything after a lot of research and after you are sure it is something you won't lie about. Well done.
Great video as expected for a camera lens to be have. And the sample shots you have added in vid are Fantastic defining the lens capability for close range and landscape click.....
Awesome review man out of all of the 35mm reviews yours was the simplest and easiest to understand I really appreciate your efforts in making this video now I can make my choice and buyi the 35 mm. by the way I have a Canon 3300. Thx
I have recently got a D3100 camera and was deeply confused as to which prime lens to buy 35mm or 50mm. But now I am sure 35mm is what I need. It will help me to take sharp wide angle image and good closeup with the depth of field that I want for my blog. Thanks for the review and you are doing an excellent job as a new photographer!!:)
For the money this is a great little lens. However Nikon should also make a 24mm 1.8 DX prime to go with this lens. In often shoot landscapes. So I like having a wider focal length to work with. I recently bought the new Nikkor 24 mm 1.8G ED. It absolutely blows my old 24mm 2.8D out of the water. It's such a sharp lens! You don't even need to enlarge the images to see the difference.
Hi there, Steve! I really enjoyed your review. I also have the D3200 and want to buy the 35mm lens. I wonder what are your impressions now that one month or so has passed? What I am chiefly interested in is: do you hear the sound of the motor when it's focusing during a video (and if yes, do you think an external microphone will solve the problem?) and also how do you feel about the portraits this lens makes? Last, are you happy with the Nikon filter? Thanks a lot, DK
Now that it's been a month using the lens I actually really like it still. When shooting photos you have to be careful and choose the right aperture to get everything you want focused. When shooting video I have the focus set to manual so unwanted sounds aren't a problem. I definitely recommend using an external microphone that you plug into your smartphone or some sort of field recorder. Portraits have been awesome. As most people state it's true....with this lens you have to use your feet to get the shot you want but I've been super happy with the few portraits I've taken. The clear filter is awesome but I recommend a circular polarizer on Sunny days which helps reduce glare and increase contrast. Thanks for checking out my video!
Thinkin about getting this lense for my d3200 also... would you recommend? and were all of these sample pics taken with the d3200?? thanks man loved the vid btw!
Does yours sound kinda rigid when you turn it like their is something in between the dial when you focus? What does the infinity logo mean on the 50mm lens?? Why do only some lens have a lock feature?
Great review! I bought this lens but I've a question about the auto focus motor and his sound or noise, i mean when you are taking a picture can you hear the focus motor? mine has a noise and i don't know if is normal or there's a problem with the lens, and i have nothing to compare with. Thank you for the help.
I have two questions . 1. I'm going to enter into the dslr camp(nikon) . Should 35mm be my first lens instead of a kit lens , like 18-55 ? 2. Why doesn't this nikkor 35mm have VR ?
Strange. Why is it that some people say on videos that this lens translates to a 52mm on a crop sensor dx camera and some say it does that on a full frame camera. Which is it?
great video sir! I am just curious, does the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens auto focus to my Nikon D5500 and Nikond D5300? because my camera body doesn't have motor body. I am planning to buy that lens. Thank you..
Yes, it does have its own auto-focus motor :) that's what the AF-S stands for :) Stay away from lenses labeled with AF only, as they have no auto-focus motor
Thanks for taking the time to create this video. Now that you've had the lens for a while, how do you like it now? I have the 50 mm 1.4 G lens and I love it! So, if you're thinking about another lens, it's well worth it. I'm now thinking about getting this little gem. Thanks again.
I really like the lens but have since realized I want a wider angle lens for video and landscape pictures. The field of view on this lens provides a more true to the human eye look which is not ideal for some things i'd like to shoot

Do you find the focus ring on this lens to be gritty at all? I have the lens and while the image quality is amazing, the focus ring is not as smooth as I'd like. I'm coming from Canon though I don't know if all Nikon lenses are like this
Hey, Steven! Thanks so much for this review! I am looking for a camera for vlogging and live sessions (I'm a musician) and I was thinking of the Nikon D5200 and this Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens. What do you think? What would you recommend?
+DJ Rome I have that camera and I'm thinking of getting this lens. Did you switch from a zoom lens to this? I'm curious but also worried about the transition. I use the kit 18-55 lens
Hi, I understand this lens has no zoo s since it's a prime, but when I use it for record video with my D5100, if I move close or far away from my object, I need to manually focus again, isn't this one supposed to have autofocus while recording video? Great lens by the way.
thanks Steven, good video. A quick question, how this lens would compare to a 50mm 1.8G Nikkor on the same DX body? which one you'd recommend for street photography (I don't do the portraits), thx, Gregoz
Thanks for this review. Not sure if I missed this but does the 'silent wave focusing motor' truly auto-focus silently? I want to buy this for stills and video but hate the chirping sounds that can be picked up by the camera's mic whilst recording video with the kit lens. Please let me know if this is better, thanks!
I'm looking to buy a 50mm f1.8G lens ...would you recommend this 35mm over that ? i have a d5500 camera. so the 35mm will be a 50 ish on my camera, and the 50mm would be around a 75mm
The 3300 and the 5500 cameras are both DX (they both use the same sensor) which means the photos will be the same size. The 35mm lens is designed for the DX, where as the 50mm is designed for a FX camera. Both give a very similar view as your own eye does. You can still use a 50mm on your camera, if you went into a camera shop they would probably let you see the difference
HI! I HAVE A QUESTION Steven Sampson, is good for Low light without using the flash light?, because i have a D5000 DX and a lens 18-55mm that came with my camera, and is not good for low light. Or what lens do u recommend me to buy for low light thank you!.
Aye I have done photography for a while now and do have this lens! I would not suggest buying this for low light although it will do better than your vr I 18-55mm. This lens is more a speed camera (auto focus) than anything else.
