Unlike everybody else in this forum I don't come from a cine background, instead I am from the photography/journalism side. For more then a decade I have watch canon kick the crap out of Nikon when it came to any video. Nikon was superior in still photography. This is a chance to bring Nikon to the top for both DSLRs and the Z series for both stills and video.

Interesting development. Indeed, after Sony Venice and other cinema line cameras, and Alexa being a staple, RED started to decline in market share that it once enjoyed with feature films. This could be a boost for both Nikon and former Red companies, leaving now Canon to have to either respond in major way or slowly lose more market share by better competitors. They can't live of the brand recognition forever. As for the Red and Nikon lawsuit, it does feel like some behind the scene deals were made that probably forced Nikon to be more aggressive in its expansion. Maybe they figured its cheaper to invest in Red than to lose a court decision. Just speculation on my part, I don't really know. But maybe it forced them to expand aggressively and that is why no one saw it coming. Who knows. Thanks for the update.

Yes indeed it,s a very interesting announcement, great for both Red and Nikon, and it could go down as one of the smartest camera tech moves in history, if Nikon plays it right, they could take a serious chunk of Canon’s market share in this space. Canon has already lost of lot of its customers to the Red Komodo…..only time will tell

@@EntrNmHreThat's true. I remember just two or three years ago, the general feel was that Nikon is on the ropes trying to catch up with the mirrorless game, but the underdog came back swinging. I think it was Nikon 850 where they started to really put all their effort into new Z line of mirrorless and while first few models were rushed, they quickly made a splash with Z9 and Z8, found their spot again and now buying RED. Good for Nikon. Canon really will need to respond in some major way, but so far I'm not getting a feeling they are in a rush. Maybe this will wake them up.

Oh I agree and the success Canon had with the c70 and r5c, may have their development teams up for failure as the market has now shifted in a major way.

@@EntrNmHreIndeed. Well, competition is good for users and in a long run for companies as well. Neither Canon nor Nikon would not be what they are if one was not pushing the other to innovate all those decades and than Sony came to the scene in the mirrorless world and once again we are seeing innovation. So exciting times ahead. Cheers!

I know right, but the news this morning of RED’s sale to Nikon - I had to check several sources, I honestly didn't believe it, but that X post confirmed it for me. Still mind blown…and I wonder what other companies were also bidding on the sale???

Nikon almost got me to switch with the z9 series, now they own RED digital cinema…imagine Nikon Z camera with R3D Red RAW recording internally. Take my money Nikon.
