I have had the P1000 for just over a month. Actually, this is my very first camera. I have used tablets, phones, and disposables...(been a while) So, being as far from a pro as possible, I have found this camera worth the investment for my limited, and exploratory needs. I have invested in a decent tripod, UV, Solar, and IR lens's. extra batteries and SD cards. I purchased "Photographers Guide To The Nikon Coolpix P1000", by Alexander S. White as an easy reference. As a novice with limited free time it has been a little much to grasp and remember all of the different controls, adjustments, and settings. I will most likely attend a basic photography class at the local college. All that being said, I have had a ball...it is fun to use; some of the photos I have been impressed. I actually feel a sense of pride when showing my wife what this old guy can do. I would recommend this camera as a hobby. After buying and using it, I researched the cost of higher end cameras set up to to be comparable to this off the shelf camera....This is a bargain. I am happy with it.

I own a Nikon P900, and I am happy with it. My next camera is going to be a P1000; I know that it has many limitations, that is only 16 mp, but quite frankly a I am not a professional photographer and I don't want to buy a DSLR, and spend at least 2 or 3 thousand dollars in lenses on something that I would take away from the pleasure of shooting a picture. To me half of the pleasure of snapping a picture are the memories that go with it.

I also have the P900 and it's an awesome camera. I held the P1000 and it's a massive camera compared to the P900 and almost double the size and weight. I wished Nikon at least increased it's sensor and it remains the same. Like the P900 it's still poor focusing in low contrast scenes and fails in low light focusing. I also wished Nikon had the option of manual zooming and focusing. The zoom when extended is really long and reminds me of a bazooka!

@Bird Box Depends on what you're aiming for. Extreme birding and zooming the P1000 is good. I do recommend a sturdy tripod for more stable shots in long range zoom mode. Buffering and writing to the SD card is a bit slow when shooting in high speed mode.

I used to use 3 or 4 cameras every time I went out. Now, I only use one, my Nikon P 900. It is just less hassle. I got sick of fooling around with changing lenses when I wanted a wide angle or when I needed a long lens. The P 900 can do everything with its one fixed lens. The image quality is good enough for my purposes. It does everything I want it to do and does everything pretty well. If I had to use my dslr for all my photo work, I wouldn't do much photo work. Maybe I wouldn't do any.

My Nikon P950 camera is the only camera that I use. It’s a top notch camera for me. I wasted a lot of money buying a DLSR camera and had to buy lenses. I can shoot long distance with my $700 camera with no problems. Nikon P950❤❤❤.

When I had a P900, I had 3D printed a special mount for my tripod that moved the centre of gravity back, so when the lens was all the way extended, it was still balanced on the tripod, otherwise it was nearly impossible to use. Really looking forward to getting a P1000 next years.

A useful if not slightly cludgy suggestion try putting a very long ARCA Swiss plate like I use for my Tamron 150-600 G1. It will make it easier to balance on a tripod or gimbal head. Also can serve as a carry handle.

For someone like me who is not going to enter the drama for professional shooting and just enjoys the outcome it produces , these are osm cameras. The p900 has provided me with the range which many lacks even when using expensive cameras. Good overview once again.

1st, your presentation is very good and unbiased. Thanks you. My story is that I've tried almost all the bridge cameras around 60X optical zoom then I switched to Sony mirrorless with zoom lenses ($$$). Finally I now have a Sony RX10M3 24-600mm Bridge camera. the 1" sensor made a huge difference. I trade the 3000mm eq. P1000 for better quality. All around practical.

I have the previous model, the P900 and bought the P900 because it was one thousand AUD cheaper than the newly released P1000. This brings us to the point of cost, a very real thing in photography. Of course if you want to spend thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars on photographic equipment or have a professional requirement then go ahead buying top line stuff but if you’re an ordinary guy, amateur photographer, hobbyist, then these Nikon cameras have a powerful photographic punch for limited expenditure. The zoom on these cameras is just magnificent enabling shots that just could not be taken with other cameras having more humble focal lengths, meaning that you don’t have to crop so much in photoshop. This means that you may end up with more pixels with this camera than other camera shots requiring heavy cropping. A really good thing with these cameras is that you don’t need a heavy bag full of lenses and continual swapping of those lenses during a day’s shoot. The stabilisation in these cameras works really well and you can take hand held, long focal length shots that would have been impossible maybe only five or six years ago. There are many programmes within the menu system of this camera automatically optimising the camera for the shot about to be taken however if you don’t want that there are “top-of-dial” general settings too. To really spruce up your images a little work in Photoshop Elements or Lightroom and you’ve got some really good pictures. I’ve also been impressed with the colour gamut of this camera being normal, neutral, vivid or monochrome. I normally have used Fiji cameras because of the fantastic colour of the shots taken however these Nikon cameras have good colour too. SnapChick enjoy your holiday. Cheers.

The P1000 has a 125x zoom. To get the equivalent shot with a Nikon D5 DSLR would cost $8000 for the body and $75,000 for a Zoom-Nikkor 1200-1700mm. The lens weighs 35lbs and is about 30" long. The P1000, on the other hand, costs $900 and will fit in a small bag. However, that's not the point. The modest camera round your shoulder will always beat the superb camera that's on a shelf at home. Case closed.

Most illogical calculations cuz if it were true, then why would professionals go for 200-500mm lens. And you deliberately ignored the far great image quality of DSLR than point and shoot. I've both P900 + D5300 and cropping the d5300 pics take them to same level of P900 with still maintains very good quality than P900.

For a "point and shoot" - it belies the term on at least ONE thing: SIZE. As you said, that IS the biggest "point and shoot" camera currently out there. And it is also even more expensive for it's "intended audience" for the price range of point and shoots that start at the bottom of $70 USD to a "professional starter kit" of $800 USD (the usual price of basement "budget" semi-pro starter dslr/mirrorless camera bodies start upwards of $500 USD). I've owned one of the cheaper coolpix iterations and that thing fits more in the bridge camera category than a point and shoot. The lens is the major selling point for this camera due to the zoom factor, everything else is secondary. A slightly less expensive mid-tier mirrorless rig is easier to lug around in the long run for people with less "pro" endurance in carrying rigs all over the place with an equivalent lens kit.

I think bird watching and animals in the wild are the ultimate uses for a camera like this. I have owned a Canon Sx50Hs and currently own a Panasonic FZ1000 which has great range, but gets even more reach when reduce your megapixel count (up to 2400mm equivalent I believe). You can’t beat the quality picture of a DSLR and a great lens, but you can’t beat the reach of a quality bridge zoom !!!!!

I had the Nikon P900 and have since moved to a micro four third camera (to keep weight down) as I had a hard time focusing with it unless I had a tripod. The autofocus mechanism on the P900 grew less responsive over time as well so I changed to another camera. It served me well for about a year. The shots you took with this camera were very well composed so you are right in saying that the photographer is more important than the gear sometimes.

I use mine in conjunction with a Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/2500. Seems I use the Lumix more for 'normal' shooting and not needing a tripod and the P1000 for when I know extreme range may be needed, ie birds or animals, with a tripod. Not sure this is 'the' camera for everyone but of course each to his own....

See there's a minor difference in 2000mm & 3000mm. It doesn't work like algebra. I own P900 and so I know the limitations of zoom ranges very well. Beyond 1200mm or max 1500mm, the atmospheric conditions make any image useless. You'll not even save those images in your computer or phones. So it's very wise not to spend money on zoom ranges which will not give any useful results. BUT YES, IF YOU'RE A SPY, then every zoom range counts 😜. Do a simple test to clarify all your doubts. Get some P900 or P1000 pics and then get equivalent pics from any DSLR and then crop out the DSLR images upto the P900/1000 ranges and you'll understand why I am going for DSLR. You can download P900 original images from my portfolio here - unsplash.com/@prashantsaini

I have the Nikon P900 and its ok but despite the huge zoom, I still prefer my Micro four thirds or compact camera for image quality over zoom range. My major criticisms of it are actually not image quality, but the viewfinder, handling and size! The viewfinder is like looking down a tunnel and not easy to locate things-especially moving targets like planes lol. Then, because most of the weight is in the lens, when you actually hold the camera, it's centre of gravity is further away from the body. It feels like your hands are straining to keep the camera upright. This also affects keeping the camera steady when shooting! It's surprising that the tripod bush on the P1000 is still poorly placed, considering the length the lens extends too! Finally size lol Not a discreet camera! I actually would love to own the P1000 though. Not sure how well it handles or what the viewfinder is like, but does have RAW-not sure how well implemented that is. Small sensor yes, BUT hey it can take photos of things other cameras can never do-like photograph the ISS! (unless its with an expensive add on telephoto costing more than the P1000-or a telescope!). So actually a fun and challenging camera. But for many, it's the actual COST of the thing that would be off putting! I do see however that the price is at least falling now! £900+ was a lot of money to fork out last year, but below £700 now! Still, would be a better buy around £500 for me!! Oh, and image quality is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions at long range. Best shooting in high pressure on a frosty cold winters morning-or night for the Moon! That extreme zoom has one flaw-f8 at 3000mm. That means less light, longer exposures, high ISOs etc and deteriorating image quality because of the small sensor. Finally, it is not a take anywhere camera, simply because it's huge ! It's not the weight, but the sheer physical size of it! Could arouse a lot of suspicion in some security sensitive locations! And forget it if you want to visit North Korea lol! Or you could be accused of spying or voyeurism too lol ( I am neither a spy or voyeur...well, not yet anyway lol).

I worked with the P900 for two straight years heavy shooting. Now moved onto the 1000; a natural progression for what I was doing. I think your pin-pointing the KIND OF photographer is one that is spot on. These ultra zooms, whilst big, are still fully mobile, can be flipped out of a side case any moment, any terain. Does ‘point and shoot’ somehow mean the quality of photography is reduced? Not at all. For a start, most shooters now are not professional, AND, for the serious shooter of certain kinds of wildlife I think the point and shoot is irreplaceable. The nature of the subject can make anything else simply impractical: I work with small birds a lot, some of which are horrendously difficult to observe, let alone photograph; and this says nothing of the challenges of sudden encounters, being thrown into an opportunity that might last 5 seconds, or hours -- UNPREDICTABILITY just one of the truckload of vagaries. I’d argue these cameras will bring far more to wildlife photography than professionals dealing with a bulky set will. And their price range is allowing a powerful unit to fall into the hands of heck of a lot of up and coming talent out there.

I own the P900 and have used it extensively in wildlife shooting. I work for a chain of high end safari camps in Kenya and Tanzania. I own a few other DSLR cameras but the P900 is always on my laps when driving around the bush here in the Serengeti. I was wondering is the P1000 a worthy replacement for the P900 for what I mainly use it for. I know the P1000 is the big brother with more options especially to be able to shoot in raw (and lets not forget the zoom range). But even with the P900 at close to 2000 mm there is a lot of atmosphere between you and the object and therefore you don't always get a crisp picture especially in the middle of the days heat. I have had a close look at the P1000 but I am in two minds on whether i should purchase it or not. You have used it and had hands on. You are in a position to advise me if it would make a worthy purchase.

I got this camera to take to airshows and the airport. It's not great. Movement....ANY movement in the scene shows up like it took different parts of the picture at different times (if that makes sense). Technique has to be rock solid when shooting prop planes 1/60-1/100 , but the most the aperture goes to is F8 and that is REALLY frustrating. Shooting birds and the moon is fantastic, and a surprising one I found is nighttime scenes using the moon shooting feature overcomes the noise from the small sensor. And the video is ridiculously awesome. I didn't get it for video but it's really fun to use it.

I think you have given a very balanced review. This camera has certain characteristics that are nowhere to be found as "all in one". In < €1000. It has a very good Video shooting capability with image stabilization and Auto Focus despite a huge zoom. It is a great camera to have even if one is willing to have one primary camera with top-notch capability. (€ 7000 +) The use case is important to understand but it costs less than half of just a single 70-200mm 1/8 lense. Most of the critiques are unfair OR they just brag their (in)ability. A top-notch camera doesn't make one a great photographer, people may show off others with such possession, but 16 megapixel is not less. Why crop if you can zoom, and once you zoom a raw image there is a CROP? If you just convert raw to JPEG you lose 30% size.

If you had only ~$1000 to spend. Would you buy the nikon p1000 or a samsung galaxy 10 (or eqivalent)? Assuming your current phone is 5 years old. Option 1: old phone for communication +p1000 for point and shoot photos, Or Option 2: galaxy s10 for communication and PS photos?
@reldies5364
@reldies5364 5 лет назад
Well although the image quality of the P1000 is on the level on a smartphone, you cant get that optics in a phone. And why limit yourself with those two options? You can get a cheap but good working smartphone like the Huawei p30 lite and grab a Sony a6000 for example. Do you realy want that zoom? Because then you wont be satisfied with just a smartphone either.
@LeighAndRaymond
@LeighAndRaymond 5 лет назад
I suggest thinking about how important the zoom is to you and also which camera you would use more. If you think you'd be pulling out the phone to take photos often, and only taking the larger P1000 out occasionally, you might do well to hold off on the dedicated camera.

@@dawrongwitch9036 If you need the zoom I think a telephoto lens might get too expensiv. Did you look into the p900 as well? The only down side I saw is that it doesnt shoot RAW and the focal length is a little bit less, but at least its smaller and lighter ^^

I have a question, I know basically nothing about “ photography”. I read all this “Raw “ and tech. stuff converting and what ever. Then there’s jpeg I guess. I just want to video and play it back on my TVs and maybe post on you tube on a rare occasion. Don’t plan on editing or anything like that. What is this jpeg and raw and what is involved in converting it, just so I can watch it ?

How accurate is the manual focus ring? Is the EVF good enough for this task? I'm a long time P900 user and have found that getting the camera to focus on what I want it to focus on is my main frustration. (took 25 shots to get one good one of 2 bluejays in woodland scrub. I have 24 photos of in focus branches, leaves rocks more leaves.. Etc... )

The P1000 seems a bit big and expensive, as did the P900. When shooting continuously, such as several frames per second, I think this camera cannot refocus between each frame, whereas some other cameras can. In other words, with this and many other Nikon point-and-shoot cameras, the focus and exposure are locked from the first frame of the burst. I have read that the Canon SX60, on the other hand, can continually refocus between each frame of its bursts if it is set properly to do so. I have the Panasonic ZS70 with a 30X zoom. It's more compact (smaller and lighter) than the Nikon P1000, and it can shoot a burst of up to five frames per second while continuously refocusing between each frame of the burst. This would be good for sports where, for example, a runner or cyclist is running toward the photographer. I think the P1000 or the P900 would be awesome to get!

The problem I have is that if frame filling shot of let's say a birds or even 50% there is more pixels on the subject =more detail I've had this with the p900 compared to my (no longer Canon 70d sigma 150-600 and em1mkii) I've had images with more detail from a much smaller sensor. Was your osprey shot full frame or cropped as the print looks OK well from a RU-vid view. I've just switched back to d500 but I don't think the 200-500mm is long enough for my style of birding here in the uk

Hey snapchick. Here is a little production tip. When using a background that looks like our taped this outdoors, mix some ambient out door sound, with the 'studio' voice. You will be amazed how much it ads to a video like this. Watching this, sort of gave me the feeling of an outdoor shoot that was later completely voiced over, and just seems weird. This from a guy who works in sound production. Try doing to a small clip to see for yourself. Great channel - Cheers

If the price point was closer to the P900 I would consider the P1000. I own a similar to the P900 in the Kodak AZ901 reaching nearly 2000mm. The extra 1000mm does interest me to expand reach of wildlife shots that my 300mm F2.8 lens+ 2X extender on my Canon 5D MKIV full frame couldn't reach, even my Canon 7D MKII crop DSLR couldn't reach. The point is, it's better to get less than a stellar shot than no shot at all.
@daveboyers4549
@daveboyers4549 5 лет назад
I would debate your labeling the P1000 a point and shoot camera. That term is commonly used for small compacts, and cameras that offer very few adjustments. Calling it a bridge, or super zoom is much more accurate. When I'd finally tired of DSLRs and lugging a camera bag full of heavy lenses, and lots of lost shots fumbling around changing them, I got a P900, and it was fun, producing stills that were, (for some reason), far sharper than the ones in your video. That lasted until I discovered the Sony RX10-4, and that changed everything. I'm getting quality comparable to the full frame Nikon I'd owned for years, and the Sony has manual focus and zoom, and spectacularly clear 4K video. While it's only 600mm full out, the sharpness and accuracy of focus allow for far more cropping than the P900. The combination of Zeiss glass and a 1" sensor make the Sony an extremely convenient camera for almost any use. Yes, it's more expensive, but why spend the time taking photos you know could be better?

Thank you for uploading - I have seen your review twice - reason - you are the most positive Nikon P1000 reviewer - and i am a little blinded by the 3000 mm lens - and i know that i want more than what i got right now. I am in the process of buying a new bridge camera - i have the Panasonic FZ1000. Loking at other reviews it seem that this review is from a "pro Nikon" standpoint - you speek nikon. Speed - everybody tells me it is slow....you say relative fast - Image quality - from other reviews i understand it is phone like quality - Prakticality - i know that 3000 mm is a lot - but cameras like sony RX10 4 and Panosonic FZ2500 also has very long reach - Maybe i am nitpicking...but it seems that a Camera like the Sony RX10 mark 4 will beat the crap out of this camera - except from the extreme reach - and with prices nearing each other - the sony is "only" 20% ekstra - 99% will find more value in any other camera than the Nikon.

Hello :) I have this camera’s little brother, the B700, and was looking into getting this for birding and planespotting. But, the B700 has this quirk where the aperture jumps around if you have the camera in full manual and zoom in and out. Did you experience the same on the P1000? Because of these small sensors and diffraction, I always like to keep the aperture at its widest all the time, but every time I zoom or out, I have to give the aperture dial a spin because the aperture inevitably jumps to a smaller aperture. Look forward to the full review!

I'm a complete novice but learning every day. Long distance, 3000 mm shooting is amazing and unparalleled! Though quite often I can't get this thing to focus right, long distance and macro, the camera get so blurry more times than not- I'm talking about still objects. I don't get it! I'm not looking for great quality pixels, I just want the camera to focus properly instead of a blur. At first, the camera focuses correctly then all of a sudden when I try to retake the same scene/video seconds later focus changes and it becomes a blur and won't focus correctly as it did seconds earlier. I manual focus then hit the shutter, then suddenly image changes and shrinks before snapping the photo. what's the point of manually focusing!

Nikon should update the Coolpix B700 to a B800 with features capable to rival Sony RX10 IV, Canon Powershot G3X, Lumix FZ1000 II / Leica V-Lux 5... At least 1" sensor, 20MP, 20/24 - 400/600 mm with constant Max F2.8, 4K with no crop, fully articulated screen, Viewfinder, popup flash, Dials : "Modes Dial, Exposure Compensation Dial, Droive Modes Dial, Multifunction/Command Dials, Lens barrel with Focus ring and/or aperture ring, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth... A real Bridge/Superzoom for Hybrid users (Stills+Videos)... Z6 body or D5600 like-body could be a great thing for a such bridge... Nikon should check all features offered by the other rivals (the 1" sensor group above) and release a great Bridge...

Hi, I first had the Nikon P900, but then sold it in order to get the P1000. I upgraded, simply because I tend to shoot in RAW format which the P1000 does. I like to shoot wildlife, but I also use it to video my other hobby - singing cover songs. I have a RU-vid channel for this. For taking better quality images, I use my dslr which is a Nikon D300. Both of my Nikon cameras give me what I need for my hobbies. The P1000 however, is well known for researching the flat earth plane on which we live. Many 'flat earthers' own the P1000. Ships that 'go over the earth curvature' are soon brought back into view. I don't want to go into a debate here, but suffice to say, that oceans and any body of water cannot stick to a spinning ball and always finds its own level. The P1000 will without doubt, get you 'waking up'!

Tbh I wish I had this camera, just because of its zoom range. Afaik there is nothing like it. If you are looking to get a lens for a mirrorless or DSLR of around 3000mm, you will probably end up with those huge telescope lenses. And of course you'd need one of those huge astrophotography tripods as well. If you add all that up, the figure is likely a multitude of what the P1000 costs. Plus the weight difference would be enormous. A zoom range up to 3000mm (equivalent) enables you to do such cool things. And NO I am not talking about that! For instance, I would love to take shots that feature the moon and use a perspective that makes it look huge, and of course an interesting composition as well. That is some unique capability, that I would love to play around with. It comes at the cost of image quality but that would be a small price to pay. Given the choice of not being able to make a shot and taking the shot with less IQ, I know what I will choose. Unfortunately, I can't really justify buying it, perhaps in a couple of years I'll pick one up second hand.
