NIKON Coolpix P900 :: Photographing The Moon

I've been using the Nikon P900 to photograph the moon a lot lately. Its not a great camera by any stretch, but it does have a 2000mm equivalent focal length on the lens which makes it a very capable special use camera.

As an astrophysicist, this is SO satisfying to watch. Look at the detail of those craters!! Love it.

I've done a lot of moon shots with a 2,800mm telescope, sometimes adapted to 5,600mm. You can get some great results. Using video files to stack frames helps get rid of a lot of the atmospheric distortion which is the key restrictor with photographing the Moon, but that gets in to the realm of astrophotography, keeping it arty is way more fun ;P
@theartofphotography

Its a challenge for sure… you can see a lot of distortion in the footage here
@JezHughes

The best natural way of limiting it is to simply capture it higher in the sky, above 30° or so (this is easier in the winter). That obviously limits a lot of foreground opportunities you might want in the photo, but it's the easiest way. Weather and elevation play a big part too, hot, humid summer evenings = bad atmosphere. Cool, crisp winter's mornings, you barely get any. Looking forward to your project.

I didn't get a camera yet. but with my phone's camera I ve been able to be tricky and corporate the moon in some of my shots. I think it's one of the most fascinating things, love to enjoy the moon every single night .

Hey Ted, you should consider getting in touch with a local amateur astronomy club if you ever want to do some telescopic imaging without the investment. The amateur community is very open and sharing. I’d bet someone with a scope would be willing to collaborate with you on your project. Looks like there’s a Fort Worth Astronomical Society that meets up at UNT if you’re interested.

I'm a first time viewer, now subscriber that feels like even though I did not get what I was coming here for (help with settings on moon photos with my P900) there is something about your demeanor, voice, looks (I dunno, neither of us are all that special to look at ;) that kept me watching the entire video. Rather than being upset I didn't learn what I initially wanted, I think I found someone I'll be tuning into on a regular basis. In summary. Well done.

I like it when the moon is chasing the Sun close. At dust were one can see the fullness of the Moon even though it is not full. Anyone understand what I'm talking about. The Sun is reflecting back off the Earth on to the shadow of the crescent Moon. Hard to Photo I think, The Human eye was made to see such beauty.

I have done moon shots with a Canon Rebel T3 and Sony A6000. I think the biggest things that helps are a long lens and a good tripod. The long lens helps the moon fill enough of the frame to be recognizable as the moon.

I don't think I would completely agree with your assessment on the P900. Even though I don't make videos, yes it probably isn't the best and yes, it doesn't do well in low light. However, I have taken some nice stills that I wouldn't have been able to take with my Sigma 150-500 because I was too far away from the subject, but I got the shot with my P900. The more I use it the more I like it. Regards, Duane

Thank you, I've gotten some great shots with this camera as well and the video was making me feel like I wasted money on this camera. It's inexpensive maybe in the professional's opinion but some of us typical people who are retired and not rich consider this a rather expensive camera. The zoom is heavy but great. I love the scenes settings being an amateur

I also have a real fascination with the moon. As you said predictable but also ever changing with the change in clouds, location, air pollutants, etc. It is a challenge to get a good shot and then to frame it to a great shot. Focal length is some of shooting the moon (having a telescope and a 900mm Equivalent lens), But capturing the feeling or mood felt when viewing the moon is more a goal of my moon shooting at the moment. I think it would be a interesting Photo assignment given a few parameters.

I am obsessed with the moon, and have been since I was a child. Every time I see it, I'm like a stupid person. I've seen several eclipses, and with all the super moons lately I've had a field day. I actually posted one of my moon shots for the last photo assignment, and it was in the video. I've made several descent shots of the moon with what limited equipment I own, and would love to get a telescope, or something like the p900. A detailed moon shot in on my photography "bucket list"; I don't care how many people have shot great images I want to shoot it myself. Your images of the moon are amazing, and makes me wish I had an extra $500 laying around just for that.

I only own a 17-50 mm lens. A few days ago I took a picture if the sky because there were tons if small clouds in front of and around the moon. If you'd allow pictures with this style and not 'just' moon pucturen then I think it could work as a photo assignment.

I photograph the moon often and I also struggle for something unique. I often try to include something in the foreground and since I enjoy wildlife photography, sometimes it is a bird or other animal. To make up for the shallow depth of field of the long lenses, I will use a form of focus stacking across several images to end up with both foreground and background in focus.

Great video!! love taking photos of the moon. I've even got some silhouettes too. I use the handheld night scene on my camera and have gotten some great shots. I would love to use lens with longer zoom, but at this point, can't afford them. but for what I get using my lens taking photos of the moon, i can't say i'm disappointed in what i get out of it because all the photos turn out looking great! Keep up the good work and channel.

The video at the beginning was fantastic! So many craters. I used a Sony A300 to track a lunar eclipse from almost start to end. The final image of the thin crescent moon in the morning was only "visible" to the camera's sensor. Looking forward to the solar eclipse in August.

I don't know about it being a photo assignment. It will definitely be more restrictive since it pretty much requires particular equipment. I don't know though, it could create a fun creative challenge to work with what you've got.

Most of your videos are good Ted, and usually interesting. This one was particularly good for me as I have tried to photograph the moon on occasion from here in London, UK and always been unsuccessful and disappointed with the results. Your video has inspired me to have another go and take tips from you. So, on the next clear nigh I am going to use one of my older cameras, a Nikon D90, a 55-300 lens (my longest) OR a 500mm Mirror Lens, possibly an extension tube, my trusty (rusty?) tripod and have a go. Thanks for posting this.

I'm not sure about the addition of music Ted: your videos always have a great- let's roll up our sleeves and get on with stuff feel, and although the music does add a level of sophistication it somehow feels a bit too cosy, it's probably just me. I've photographed the moon several times. I got decent results from a Sony A5100 c/w 2 X M42 teleconverter attached to a M42 to T mount adapter which was then connected to an old 500mm f8 prime ( a cheap Hanimar lens). Add the 1.5X crop factor and I was getting a pretty decent 1500mm 35mm equivalent focal length. Not quite as long as the P900 but it's APSC sensor gave it more croppability. I did try the 3 X teleconverter but the image looked soft and lacked detail. The best quality images of the moon overall I've ever got were from my Nikkor 200 to 500 f5.6. This lens is amazingly sharp and you can even handhold moon shots because the VR is so effective :-D

Love the subject of space! I took my boys camping a couple of years back and we were looking out for ISS to cross the sky in front of us. While we were looking for it we saw 2 satellites 4 shooting stars and finally the Space station! Its a busy place up there :-) The moon has always been a fascination for me. I have a few shots of her. I enjoy just getting out there and seeing what I can get :-). Can I add on a finishing note. I look forward to your video's Ted but this one had a slight (well bigger than slight) distraction... The background music was just a bit too loud. With you talking, the music volume, and my tinnitus, the combined noise seemed a little uncomfortable. (not a jab at you..... I'm just saying) Your levels don't normally distract me but they did on this vid.

@adrianpocea2287
@adrianpocea2287 7 лет назад
that is what I came to think from some time ago. From all the compact cameras out there , the superzooms are worth considering for things that really ADVANCED CAMERAS CANNOT DO. You can grab the best full frame, with the best settings, put a ginanormous telephoto that reaches 800 mm, and you will still not get a shot as good as with a superzoom. If you crop the full frame image and compare, it will still be inferior. That's why I think, for example, that Sony Rx10iii is a much better camera , in most scenarios, than the praised A6500 or even A7r2. Good luck in having the lenses on those cameras with that kind of reach.
@OutlawFarmersRC
@OutlawFarmersRC 7 лет назад
I was going to get a RX10M3 but it did not do it for my style of shooting. I like Street and Portraits the most. The Rx10 is a great outdoors camera. Wildlife, Daytime sports. It's even a great vacation camera where you don't need to carry lenses everywhere. The down side is you need to be at full focal length to get any kind of subject separation. But with that said I have a A6500 with Prime lenses. The RX10m3 will be my second camera over me buying a 100mm+ lens. Plus that Zeiss glass.
@adrianpocea2287
@adrianpocea2287 7 лет назад
I think i was talking mostly about video. For stills, those cameras, the superzooms, don't hold a candle to a fast dslr or a A6500 in tracking birds, subjects, etc. But for video, i was one evening at a street event in Scottsdale , Arizona. I was filming far and close, zooming, being versatile, doing whatever i wanted with my Rx10iii. It was great in low light for the requirements of the scenes. I saw a guy with a A7sii and some prime 35 mm on it. I was feeling for him. On such a type of event, a zoom and a really good stabilization helps you way more than some less noise in the shadows or more blurred background. And another thing, those cameras are really great for "spying" on people, situations. Not in a pervert way, but in a sense that you get people in their most genuine poses, without them having even a clue about what's going on. With a full frame and a prime you kinda have to be within the visible range of somebody. Here is the video that i did with my RX10ii vimeo.com/205975386
@OutlawFarmersRC
@OutlawFarmersRC 7 лет назад
Oh yes the RX10 is a great Video camera and is still able to take great photos. Your video really showed off a lot of how good this camera is. Like I said, This will be my second camera I get. Hoping they add a little faster focus for stills at full focal length. But I do understand the limitations from the 1in sensor.
@adrianpocea2287
@adrianpocea2287 7 лет назад
Chris Barr those limitations are reduced to a minimum by the amazing Sony sensor quality, by the bsi type sensor, by the bright lens. And those limitations become strengths when you think that you can have a 24-600 f2.8-4 lens of that size , nicely balanced on a sturdy body. Imagine a A6500 with a 100-400 G master on it

And allegedly the sun is 94 million miles away from earth and the moon is allegedly 250:000 miles from earth and as you could clearly see the moon was not rotating. So explain yourself oh one other thing dont you wonder why during the day you can see the moon and the sun in the same sky. ???

Actually, no. Take a digital thermometer and measure the moon light vs the shade. the moonlight is COOLER than the shade. It is the complete opposite of sunlight. Therefore it's own light.

I used the 55-210 on the a6000 and got some pretty neat results of the moon during the winter moon lunar eclipse a few months back. Have one example on my IG page @azellmerdesigns
