Since the Nikon introduction of the Nikon D3000 all the way back in 2009, Nikon has put out super affordable entry level DSLR's. Now in 2019 they have continued to do so with the Nikon D3500 which comes in at under $400 with one lens and under $500 with two lenses.
I decided to take the D3500 out into the Real World to see how it handles shooting college gymnastics. I used the two kit lenses, 18-55 and 70-300 as well as the Nikon 70-200 2.8E FL professional lens. I wanted to show you how you can take control of your camera and get quality results even with the kit lenses.

@christianonphotography
@christianonphotography 5 лет назад
I would go even further: If you start with the photo-game, forget about the Kit-lens and invest the saved bucks in a 50mm 1.8 or the 35mm 1.8 as your only lens and start understanding how to deal with this only distance. Once you know how to handle that you can move forward to the more expensive glass.

Jared, this was an excellent introductory for a guy graduating from a Canon SX610 to the Nikon D3500. And you continually made the point of glass, glass, glass. I've known this for a long time. A few people have urged me to go for this model, so I did. Yesterday I bought it, I'm a bit shy at the moment with all the things it can do, but I'll pull it off.

I have this camera, and I invested into a sigma 17-50 f/2.8 so I have a faster lens compared to the kit 18-55. Honestly the lens itself made a huge difference am I'm learning when to use certain settings and how to adjust to different environments. What's even more amazing is the fact that the Nikon DX prime 35 mm 1.8 is also usable on an FX (with only a little bit of vignetting). It's like the Canon 50 mm prime, not the sharpest for sure, but for it's price a really good tip.

Great video. This camera kit is a good starting point. You did a great job explaining the limitations of the kit lens and what better glass can do for your photography. Keep in mind you don't always have to pay top dollar for better glass either. I picked up my 70-200 Tamron G1 (the older version of the one Jared has in this video) in perfect condition used for $650. And a 24-70 in perfect condition for $550. They work perfectly for my needs and give me great images.

I have the d3400, kit lens, 70-300 lens and I shoot hockey indoors & getting great results. My 3rd lens is the 50mm 1.8G plastic fantastic because it is. Good sensor, better glass. We control the light by setting up the camera. I shoot manual RAW & Jpeg. I turn off noise reduction to help with sharpness and can edit noise in various editing software. Good camera to start off with. Great video. Keep posting the material you do.

I'm an ex-newspaper photographer. I want a lightweight kit, with long battery life and excellent glass. The D3500, with a couple of small Nikon primes, are perfect for my current requirements. I have a d3300. I use it on actual paid shoots. 2 things, 1: the newer 18-55 doesn't have a physical switch to turn autofocus on and off, and 2: Once light starts dropping autofocus very quickly goes down hill. I either have to shoot manual focus, or single point on that crosstype. But with the good 'ol 35mm 1.8, even the cross type not quite accurate enough. That being said, (at least the d3300) shared the same, or very similar sensor to the higher end brothers. Just missing focus points and other features. Most of my best photos are on my d3300, mostly because I'm much more comfortable using it vs the a7iii. All of that being said, I don't have experience with the d3500, but if my d3300 and the d3400 I bought my mom is anything to go buy, it is the best camera value period. Decent noise performance, good feeling overall, and surprising dynamic range.

I own (and love) a D7100 AND a D500-and recently bought this, the D3500. Why? Because each of us wants the “best” camera. We also learn that the “best” camera is THE ONE YOU HAVE WITH YOU. At this point in the development of digital cameras, we can get almost the best technical quality, even in an “entry level” camera. Take same non-extreme shot, w/ same settings and lens, and you’ll be hard-put to tell which one was the D500, D7100 or D3500 shot. With the 24 megapixel sensor and the current processor chip, my D3500 is GOOD and FAST. The D3500 finally pairs up well with your smart phone. It even takes GPS based location data right from the phone to the RAW file. The body is redesigned. I take minimum of X Large gloves but the new grip shape is perfect. At a mere 365 grams the redesigned body is TINY, even compared to the D3300 or D3400. I got my D3500 body-only, used and already had a NIKKOR DX 35mm 1.8 G (only 200 grams). I take the combo everywhere, on an over the shoulder strap-it’s like carrying a spare pair of glasses. I take shots I wouldn’t get w/ either the D500 or the D7100-because I have the thing WITH ME. Now, try this with your cell phone or even a similarly sized Sony, etc.: if I need “reach beyond 35mm lens range or in low light, I TAKE THE SHOT (in RAW) and then crop to the not-so near subject. The 24 megapixels plus great f/1.8 lens let’s me get away with it. I use the D500 for birds in flight, the D7100 in art museums and such, and the D3500 for just about anything else! Nikon has a winner here, for both the beginner and the careful and experienced shooter.

Nice review Jared. I had an opportunity to review the D3500 for the Amazon Vine program and came away thinking that this is a great little camera. It's very light with the 18mm-55mm AF-P kit lens, and is still pretty light with the Nikkor 55mm.200mm lens. It's a great camera to carry on an everyday basis (to work or school) if you don't want to lug around a heavier DSLR. Nikon also includes a "Guide" feature that explains the basics of photography for newbies. It's a great "starter" camera for anyone looking to graduate from cell phones.

That's the thing. You can get a $5-600 descent DSLR that can get you reasonable results. Obviously there are soooo much better cameras out there, but for beginners, it is a great start

Pick an entry level apsc. Then buy full frame glass when you can afford it. You now have lenses for both cropped and full. So when you upgrade, you just have to pick a body. Since both bodies take the lenses, you have a secondary backup canera

Just got this kit along with 2 batteries, case, small Tripod and an SD card for $400. I decided to buy a nice tripod from bestbuy for $10 and 128 Extreme Plus for $20, yesterday for Black Friday. Starting to get the hang off the camera!

@creamycatss
@creamycatss 3 года назад
@@shulapedida it's easy to learn (I took a college semester on photography) and durable, although I haven't yet dropped it thankfully due to the neck strap. It takes beautiful pictures as long as you know what exposure and such is and how to manipulate them to your advantage. I definitely recommend this camera for beginners.

I own the full frame version of that 70-300mm af-p (which I believe is the only f-mount FX af-p lens). It's costs a lot more, but you get fantastic results. I haven't seen anyone do a good review of it. In fact, most just look at the specs without testing the damn thing. I'd love to see Jared review it. As for the body, it's amazing what an entry level DSLR can do nowadays. It puts some of the older high end models to shame. Great job Nikon!

I'd say that either the Canon, Nikon or even the basic Sony a6000 kit (used) is OK for portraits (providing you use an appropriate lens of course). The limitations that might annoy some experienced photographers is the DOF as it's not quite the same as on a FF higher-end body. Plus the lenses for APS-C tend to be not of the same build quality. But by all means, a $500 entry level camera kit can certainly be used with good success. Another limiting factor I think others may not like is the lack of focus points on most of the $500 (or less) cameras. Nikon and Canon I believe only have 13 focus points, compared to even the 51 used on the D5000-and D7000 series. But regardless, one can do focus-and-recompose if they had to.

Back in February of this year, I was debating whether to buy a D3500 or not (I'm a professional photographer on a tight budget.) This video was like experiencing illumination for me. I sold the kit lens, and now I use my D3500 with an AF-S Nikkor DX 17-55mm constant apperture of f/2.8G IF ED as my wide zoom, and a full frame AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED IF VR as my telephoto. The results I'm getting are are amazing! Image quality confirms what Jared says, "glass glass glass glass glass." The only thing missing on the D3500 I wish it had is a dedicated bracketing button :-(
