Excellent review - it gets really tricky trying to decide which camera to buy within the mid-price range and reviews like this really help to put together a shortlist. Thanks.
+PhotoRec Toby which camera would you recommend to buy for vlogging? And photos? Dslr only? Or would you recommend to buy slr for vlogging? (Need a flip camera)
Just wanted to say THANK YOU. I watched so many different reviews of various cameras and yours made me decide on the Nikon D5300 :) I loved your video; informative yet to the point! :)
Great review, I agree with every point. I own the camera for quite some time, and I love the ease of use. One thing I did not like particularly was when Distortion Control is enabled there is a noticeable delay of the shutter, it's about 1 second, so just leave it off if you are for a hand-held shot. On the positive side, I love almost everything about this camera, especially the Wi-Fi, the Noise Reduction job it does on long exposure shots and the pretty good usability of high ISO images.
I am thinking of getting the 5300 for myself as a Christmas present (to me!!) and I have read all the comments and am impressed with the questions and answers. However, I have a simple question: if you are using a dslr for video, how much video can you shoot? Does it depend on the size of the memory card, or what? I have video cameras. I was looking for a camera which will do dynamite portraits or closeups of things and people for my website and other online places.
The length of recording video depends on the SD card you are using and the quality format as well. The higher GB and faster speed is what you will need. I highly suggest getting an external battery grip for longer usage too.
What would you recomend for a beginer filmmaker in this price point? (I'm thinking about the D5300 for business videos and some real estate, would you recommend something else?)
I would recommend the Canon t5i or T6i - they are so much easier to film with. and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RcR5-DNktVg.html Watch this video for reasons you should own a prime lens ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nODUWChwfMU.html
Thanks for a very good review of the D5300. Your videos are a joy to watch - and learn, at the same time. Really appreciate the work (and you obviously must make some good preparations beforehand) you do to keep us enthusiast happy! After one of your videos, I feel that I know this camera. There are some awful tests out there who think that being "hip" (and sloppy) is the only requirements for this kind of videos. Subscribed, of course. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. Best regards from Norway.
Toby, I am an advanced beginner and I am purchasing a Nikon d5300. I am planning to take shots of landscapes such as forests, skylines, and rivers. I am also going to be taking pictures of my family and pictures in lowlight. I'm purchasing a Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3, and a Nikon 35mm f/1.8G. I have a 200 dollar budget on lenses. Are these the best lenses for my money? Also, how good is the fish-eye effect on the camera. I appreciate an answer as soon as possible. Thank you in advance.
Hi I bought D5300 last week and I have no background experience on camera. It is pretty difficult to understand with the time beginning. I relief that it has good review. Thank you for sharing.
As a wedding photographer which one do you recommend ? and if you are gonna use it's original lens 18-55 which one gives better results canon or nikon ?
This was such a good review!!! I have been researching cameras for a few weeks. I want to purchase a camera for my upcoming vacation to Hawaii. Cnet is wonderful, but they use a lot of jargon that I do not understand. I love how detailed yet simplified your review was. Thank you for explaining how this camera will produce great pics on auto. 11 years ago I could have used this camera on manual but I am completely out of practice and have forgotten nearly everything I learned in my photography classes. I will have to work my way back up to manual again. Anyway, this review gave me all the info I was looking for. I subscribed!
which one is good for first DSLR d5300 or d5200 .... I have a tight budget and use to record videos for RU-vid upload and use to take pictures... which one to go... help me to choose...
Hey, man. Nice video! Very informative, thanks. Would you recommend the d5300 over, let's say, the sony alpha a6000? I just want to enter the world of photography without spending too much. Thanks again!
U must be kidding... i use a D800 for video, wanted to have that one as an second camera... god, i gave it back the next day. I was hoping for the 5300 to be better, but nothing. Just the same crap.
So with the Nikon D5300.... In live view mode you can change the aperture but you wont see a difference... But when you exit live view mode and go back in you will see the difference?? Thanks
I am looking at a D5300 package, but they say it is an international version. Does this matter or should i be concerned about buying an international version?
Hi Toby, Thanks for the review. I've watched your other review's and you mentioned the standard kit lens doesn't do the camera justice. Would you recommend the Nikon 50mm 1.8g as a strong all-rounder?
Really enjoyed your presentation. Lucid and comprehensive. I've been struggling with whether to pay megabucks and get something with every bell and whistle known to man or to be plain sensible and get something that will simply do what I need. No more pining for a full-frame. I think the D5300 will suit me fine. It will be my first time into digital. For more years (decades) than I care to think, I've used nothing but Leica M film cameras - but a Leica Monochrome? I don't think so.
I just purchased the Nikon D5300 and have a Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Nikkor SLR Camera Lens. I'm going to be shooting very long distance and wanted to know if there are any setting you would recommend I change to get the best pictures at very long distance.
How do you have that auto focus in this camera when you're not manipulating the shutter. It is possible that you're just sitting and when I move it will follow me and focus on me? Thank you.
Hi Toby. I went ahead and bought one of these. Really a nice lens option with the 18-140mm. I looked long and hard at the T-3 and T-5. I figured I and others would be shooting a lot less video and more photos. I did go to a local camera store so I could actually feel the different cameras and you are so in the money vs. the D5200. The T-5 would have only added $100 but I just don't think I'll ever outgrow this. Thanks for the reviews and suggestions.
Hey, I'm choosing between the 5300d and the 700d, what do you recommend for a beginner? My budget is around 900 dollars. I really like the 700D but is it good enough?
Hi Toby, loved this review, thank you. I am a filmmaker and I am finally upgrading my Nikon coolpix l27 (it was my first camera, please don't judge me). I want to shoot my first short film project and it's going to be low light. I thought the d5300 was great for that but I looked in the description and your recommendations. You mentioned the canon t5i 700d. Any thoughts on what I should get?
Hi Fiona, sorry I missed your comment - The D5300 or D5500 is better than the T5i in low light. I suggest getting one of other nikons and a nice prime lens or two for best quality.
which is best for wildlife photography? (considering pictures mostly as compared to videos) Between D5300,canon T5i, Sony A58? I am going in wildlife photography field as a beginner.. pls help.. thanks.
Is this ok for a newbie to DSLR’s or would I be better starting way back with the 3500 instead? I had been planning to get a P950 BUT I already have a Canon SX510hs and thought maybe I should buy a DSLR rather than another bridge camera. Advice welcome 🙏🏻
I'm bit confused about buying D5200 or D5300 or sony Alpha 58.which one is better for a beginner and price comparision between them.can u please suggest the models in nikon, canon, sony.
I bought the D5200 just before the D5300 was released. Would'a, could'a, should'a. I'm happy with my D5200. Someday I'll be upgrading the need to update myself on all the latest tech trends. I hope you will still be making these videos!
just purchased the D5300, while i did my research and you pretty much confirmed this for me even more that it gets kind of noisy when taking video and wanting to capture good audio, i think i'm going to also invest in the microphone attachment as well as an extra wind filter. hopefully this will help reduce noise a lot more.
Hi , ive been using the d3300 with flash strobes but just upgraded to the d5300 , the d330 allows me to lower the flash power in the menu (down to 1/31 power and this d5300 does not seem to have this option , ? please help !! Thank you in advance
i am really split between Nikon d5300 and the Nikon d7000 both with the 18-105 lens cost about the same What would you recommend for a beginner i would like to take landscapes and portrait mainly
hey, so I just purchased this camera as my first dslr. wondering if i made the right choice. pure amateur looking for a rounded camera for video and stills around the 800$ price range.
I am currently starting to venture into landscape photography and still shots for weddings, etc... I am debating between the Canon T5i and the Nikon D5300. Which would you recommend for landscapes and other stills? Also, what lens(s) would you recommend? I appreciate your advice.
This is a very good review. I am quite happy just to listen to you talk meticulously about this high quality camera. Unfortunately, I bought the D3300 and I might buy the coming rebel T5 1200D. Frankly, your voice is kinda sedative to me. Really, this is a good job, Toby. Please, keep it up
Thanks- Let me know if you want me to record any bedtime stories ;) D3300 is a good camera - image quality is better than T5i- T5i does have some nicer features like better video with STM lenses and that touchscreen.
Hello my husband just purchased the d5300 I am trying to do the selective color effect.. I can't seem to get it. Idk if there is something else I need to do off of the menu. I have not done changes from the menu because I don't know what I'm doing!
I am torn between the D7100 & the D5300. I owned the D7100 for a few weeks and I took it Everywhere. It is the only camera that produced striking images for me so far but it became burdensome because of its size. Now I am thinking to get the D5300. Do you think that it could stand up to the D7100? Also how does it perform in taking action sport?
Nice review, thanks! I picked the D5200 in Q1 2013 but I miss the 1080p 60 for slowmotion! We made a simple music video only with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens: Trundicho - Ich Laufe All shots were taken at 50Shutter, 1.8 aperture and 100ISO. The light was controlled with a genus vari nd filter.
I have a old D70s (bought new) and had a D80 (bought used) sold it when got the D5300. I used the menu style as I did on the older camera because I am used to it and it doesn't bother me.
+PhotoRec TV Toby , tell me what should i buy- cannon eos 700d or Nikon D5300 ? i want family and some wildlife (like birds)photography. Also can i capture birds with 35-140mm lens like a 250mm lens?
Had that same annoying aperture issue on the D3400. Had been shooting a bunch of video for a work project, went out to a waterfall park to take some shots and couldn't get the aperture to change in LV. Eventually figured out to turn the movie settings off. Kind of aggravating, but I normally shoot with the eye piece so not a deal breaker.
This is a perfectly thorough review! Thank you! I'm upgrading from the D-3200, I have been researching this camera for a while now and this video really helped me make the decision to upgrade to the D-5300. I am really looking forward to see how much farther I can push its capabilities.
I got my D3200 a few days ago for an amazing price, such a low one that I'm planning on buying a D5300 body for the lenses i have. I hope you see this because im curious as to how big of an improvement in general control and features is the D5300 over the D3200, is it worth it?
@@opia9818 I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint ya unfortunately. I always wanted to get it and still do honestly, but I haven't bought it yet 🥴 lol but I can say that my d3100 is still goin strong somehow. Like I've had some hard fall moments with it and it still pushes through. I may not be able to speak for the d5300, but I can say that the d3100 is hardy and fully capable to this day after 12 years of abuse, it's barely shown signs of shutter hesitation recently.
@@codyboop4617 (it's opia on my other account) Ah, I can definitely relate. it looks like its sturdy and fully capable of taking great photos. If i were to be successful on selling my D3200 for the price i want it at, and buying the D5300, id be only at a loss of 60$ out of a total 300$ leftover.
@@lukamoric9300 that's actually incredible. Yeah it does have some moments where in comparison to modern cellphones, the mega pixels do slightly struggle to keep up. Example being d3100 14.2mp vs Samsung Galaxy s20 at 108mp, but it's so very minor of a difference. It would be a challenge to spot the inconsistencies. I still plan to upgrade eventually, I think the motivation factor would be when the shutter gets to the failing point. Or maybe my son will be using it before then and I can use that as motivation for upgrading 👌😅
hi there, I'm about to buy my first dslr and have decided on d5300. I want to do some street photography and landscapes. I can get d5300 with 18-55mm lens and buy extra 35mm f1.8g, or d5300 with 18-140mm. Which option would be better for me? also is there point considering d5500 as £60 upgrade? BTW love your videos.
Hello there Awesome Vid. I need help Im conscious to Buy online But I do not know That one is original or not, How To Identify that one is original? thanks alot for helping me.
Hi I was wondering what would be your recommendation for a 1st purchase intro camera between the D5300 and D5500 as it relates to Macro Photography? I'm not completely green when it comes to photography, just never have had a "real deal" camera! I really like the articulating screen and think that would be a great asset for macro ... Not solely macro just have no clue was to any discernible difference if any between the 2. I don't see much difference in the prices; Do the quirks you mentioned in the video still apply and have they been addressed in the 5500? Many thanks!
Hi PhotoRec Toby . Great Review! I'm still a hobbyst and I'm using a borrowed 60d. I'm enjoying it, but I'm missing the wifi and video autofocus capabilities sometimes, so I'm between buying the d5300 and the 70d. Maybe you can help me decide. I like shooting stars, night and sunset timelapses, but also daylight landscapes and nature in general. Got some ideas for short videos too. Wich one do you think fits best for my needs?
I'm thinking of buying the D5300 or the D5600. Would you say I get a better camera buying the D5600 or is it just a more expensive camera with a touch screen? (At this point I have a D60 so I guess any one of them will be a big improvement. I want to be able to use my Tamron lenses so it has to be a Nikon without focus motor.)
Would you really recommend this over the d5200? I mean i get it, without the OLPF youll get sharper images but is it really noticeable? Or its just almost the same? I know its good to have wifi built in but its also a downside because it'll suck more juice but i found an alternative to that im just gonna use OTG CABLES for transfering pictures.. What can u say about that..? Ofcourse ill use otg supported smart phones.. Thanks!
@camerarec Toby Great review! what you mentioned and made me think again about getting one, was the live view mode. If I can't see the changes lively, there's no point to have it. Will head off to watch you D70 review.
I completely agree that Nikon has a yellow/greenish tinge to the their colours. I tried a 3200 after a canon 60D as a cheaper alternative and immediately returned it. I thought the auto on the 60D without flash was excellent, but I agree that with the flash it was just too much. Hardly used that feature. Sigh. Just want good auto shots when needed without flash.
Would this be a good camera for a amateur? I just want to take some high quality pics since my phone camera (iPhone 6) can't capture the things I want.
Thanks for this review.... Helped me make up my mind between this and the D5500. Being on a budget, the D5500 was a but pricey and does not seem to offer any significant difference in photo quality.
Can u film on it using an old 35 mm lens? BC w my other Nikon d3200 u have to be in live mode which doesn't work w old nikonvlenses. Hope that makes sense. I'm talking film camera old...
Hei i am one of the fan of urs watching review how ru i am akhil living in norway i am bit confused about buying DSLR my first one. i am confused between buying D5300 D7100 or canon 700D or Canon EOS 70D. Please guide me the with the best option as am new in DSLR world. Waiting for your reply
Which one is better for me, Nikon D5300 or Nikon D7000, before I not use any DSLR camera, but I want to purchase one good camera with good configuration and also low prices that's why I chose this 2 camera, so that I request you please help me which is better for me
When I shoot my D5300 in manual mode the fastest shutter speed I can get is 1/60. Why is that and is there anyway to get around it or is there something wrong with my camera?
I want to get the D5300 but then the T5i is good also, i want good video and stills, which would you recommend? Internal Sound for the video mode Isn't an issue with me i will run an external mic for it.
