If you are interested in picking up a Nikon D610 it is pretty much going to be the same as the D600 Review.
When Nikon announced the D600 it was pretty much no big surprise. What was a big surprise was the fact that they would have it before Photokina and months before Canons 6D.
The D600 is the first "affordable" FX Camera from Nikon at clocks in at $2,099.99 at AllensCamera.com. Now I am not going to sit here and run down the tech specs as most of you already know what they are. You also know that the most important thing about the camera are not the specs but how it actually handles in the real world shooting environment. AKA a "Real World Review" TM
What I am going to try and do is give you my straight up feedback from using the camera in a tough shooting situation of a night high school football game. If a camera can handle low light shooting and being pushed to its limits than it can handle everything and anything.
First things first this camera is pretty small yet it feels very nice in the hands. The one I shot with did not have the vertical grip yet shooting vertical really was not a problem at all. The screen is huge and clear and the buttons are will be very familiar to anyone who has shot or held a D800, D800E or Nikon D4. There is something to be said for keeping the same button set up from camera to camera to camera. The same holds true for the menu system. Nikon does a great job keeping the menus consistant from one body to the next.
The real tell tail sign of a quality camera to me is how it handles in low light situations. All I can say is this camera passed the low light shooting test with flying colors!!! I pushed it to its max normal ISO of 6400 for shooting football and the grain structure looks amazing to me. It looks almost like a film grain which is what I am ok with seeing in my images.
I do hear complaining about noise quit often from people who zoom in on the file on their computer and thing that there should be no grain. Or they ask me what noise reduction software do I use to get rid of the grain. The answer to that is I DO NOT USE ANY NOISE REDUCTION SOFTWARE. I welcome the dots of grain and accept them with open arms as normal.
I speak to this in the video above but if your exposure is close, somewhere around spot on to a half of a stop off you will not have to worry about grain becoming an issue. Grain and noise become and issue when you totally miss your exposure and try to bring back the file. When you push the files to the max is when you start to see issues with the image. But keep in mind thats not the camera fault, thats the fault of the exposure and who ever set it, wink wink.
The bottom line is this camera passes the high ISO test from its normal range of 6400 ISO. Beyond that I did not push it to the H modes as they are not recommended. Since the camera did so well at 6400, there is no doubt in my mind it will hold up at the lower ISOs. You can see some examples of 800 and 1000 ISO with some sideline portraits I took of Sam with the 14-24 2.8. Those files are very clean, colorful and sharp.

Ten years after you made this, I am waiting for a D600 to be delivered to my house. Two more days. Upgrading from a D70. I appreciate your video, I learned more about the camera and the special lighting conditions of the football field.

I'm going for the same upgrade anorher year later. My D70 starts to have too many issues.

@@CreateTimeToListen I got a 24-120 f/4 but resisted the 50 f/1.8 . The 50 is excellent for product photos when selling online and just plain sharp. Also consider using GIMP on your computer for images, it is free and good. I like the full frame, and wish you success and happiness with your camera.

Thanks @@minnesnowtan9970. I still have some lenses from my Nikon F80 that I can recover. I've used those on the D70 as well. But will be looking for better ones later on. A 50 mm 1.4 or 1.8 is certainly a good investment.

I pushed the d800 to 6400 when i was shooting a concert and was very pleased with the results. I did post that RAW file as well for everyone to play with. But I do see what you are saying about it at higher ISO. The Mark III is much better at higher ISO's.

Lock in on Single and recompose when your shooting objects not moving and when you are shooting moving objects in continuos move the focus points to the outside with dynamic 21 or 9.

I think they both will work well but I bet the 16-35 may be better based on being newer and the VR will help with hand held video.

Great video! And you recounting what it was like in the film days brings back memories from HS. Shooting night football, indoor basketball, etc with a Minolta X700 and 3.5 glass with Tmax 3200. Lucky to get 3 or four good shots. People today don’t know how easy they have it.

Have you used the d600 to make the statement? They have to have differences between the cameras or this would just be a d800. Sure id love to have 51 focus points and the be able to change the aperture during live view but if you want all that your answer is a d800.

I am so impressed by your getting out and really using this camera. So many self proclaimed youtube photo gurus snap a few shots, or show what they shot earlier, or just talk about the camera. You show the camera out in the real world . So much appreciated. Im a professional, as I've been paid for weddings, events, portraits. I've upgraded some to a higher mp DX camera D7200, I still use the D700, and was using the D7000. I also use a Pentax k3, and K1.....my super low light beast great for receptions, concerts. I was looking to upgrade the D7000, and the fullframe D610 seemed to fit perfactly, but I was kind of second guessing my choice. I ran into that buffer issue, but your right; it can be worked around. I Haven't actually job tested the 610 yet. Thank you for such an indepth, hands on review. Much appreciated. I'm not worried any longer.

I'm slightly surprised and happy I watched this video. I waited 8 months before buying the D600 because I was torn over the D800. I had a choice. More expensive camera vs. entry level Camera and some new glass. What I ended up with was the D600, a af-s 28mm 1.8G and the af-s 85mm 1.8G. It gives a a warm feeling watching this video 3 months after my purchase and basically I've followed your advice. Or better put let my head rule my heart. Great Video Jared.

HEY, I know this is an old video but i need help. I have an old d200 handed down to me, and my lenses that i use is ONLY the 80-200 Nikon 2.8D, 50mm 1.8 and the standard kit lens. The D200 is pretty dated, not giving me the low light capabilities that i want it to. Should i buy a used d600? Or should i just buy the d7100 and save for a lens?

Great review, Jared. It let us see the camera in a real life situation. I saw a note in the Lightroom 4.2 readme that said support for the D600 is preliminary, so there's a small chance edited photos might look different if reopened once D600 support is official. I imagine most will take that chance rather than not being able to edit anything.

Jared I love your reviews. They are the most use full and thorough. I love being able to down load sample photos that's very use full. I did not see ones for the d600. Im stuck at the cross roads I currently shoot with the d3200 with the 18-55 55-200 and my favorite 50mm 1.8. I would like to buy an upgrade for better low light and for video. Big emphasis on video. I have 2000 to 2500 to spend and my ideas are either d7000 d7100 with a sigma 50-150 2.8 or a D600 with its kit lens 24-85. Thank you

Hey Jared, I've been waiting anxiously to hear your thoughts on the D600! I can honestly say that so far I have been impressed with the D600 and it's video capabilities. Just got done shooting a SEMA show video for MSD Ignition and was completely impressed with the quality and color. Luckily I had already invested in FX glass while shooting with the D7000 (too many good deals on Craigslist) so I'm already covered there. Thanks for your review! Looking forward to more! I SHOOT MOV

Hey Fro! Your reviews are fun and run right up there with Kai from DigitalRev. Appreciate your time and feedback as well as fantastic humor. I totally agree with you in reference to people totally expecting too much at high iso settings.I have to say that these cameras do a great job of mimicking film grain, especially Nikon. Personally I own a 5D 3 and am considering a D600 for a second camera. I was just curious as I see you've used the 24-85 how's it compare to the 24-120? Thanks again.

13:20 -- I used a DoF calculator, and it says that at 300mm, shooting a subject 85' away, with a Nikon D600, at f/2.8, the depth of field is 4'1". Changing the aperture to f/3.2 gives an extra 7'. Is that worth it?

You make some very good points in the video. Glad to see you put the camera to good use. So many people nowadays have little/no experience with shooting with their equipment in demanding situations and blame the camera afterwards. Even newer higher-end DX cameras are more than adequate for this situation provided you have the (b)right lenses and the skills.

I have a d7000 and have shot it at 4000 ISO without an issue. There are way to many things that could be issues to tell you if there is a problem with the camera. But in many cases there tends to be some human error involving settings or lenses that its hard to say. You can tweet me a picture with your settings and I can tell you if there is an issue.

Its not a deal breaker to me honestly. 1/4000th of a second is perfectly acceptable it just about all situations. Nikon doesn't have a 1.2 lens to let that much light in but they do have the 1.4. And honestly if you need to shoot at 1/4000th at F2.8 or 3.2 you can still blow the backgorund out and the wedding client wont know that difference.
