Since the Nikon D600 has been out for a little over a decade now, this means that you can find this camera for around 300 - 400 euros nowadays. For a full frame camera!! I personally have been using this camera for quite a while now and have come to really loving it. That said, there are quite a few downsides to this camera and in this video I will share my thoughts about this camera based on my experience of using it. I hope you can gain something from this video! :-)

Having started my photography journey with a Nikon FM2n, I find it very amusing that you consider this a very basic camera with just the "core, essential features without any extra fancy features". LOL This thing is FILLED with fancy features. Great video, none the less. Thanks.

I think this depends on the vantage point from where you're looking at this camera. 😊 Compared to film SLRs, this of course is brimming with high end features, but compared to the most modern mirrorless offerings, this is pretty much a pedestrian package 😅

Great video, last year I had a freak out where my d780 broke and had a wedding the next week. My insurance would not have sorted it in time. I did have a D700 as a back up but it’s only got one memory slot and that’s too risky to solely rely on, I tend to use that for detail shots. So I ordered two D600 bodies from MPB (the Uk version) and was astounded by the quality of the cameras. Yeah doesn’t have all the “Bells and Whistles” but it actually reminded me of my old D750. The wedding went well and the pictures looked great, I would say for anyone looking for a spare or even a first full frame it’s a great option. I got two bodies for £680 in very good condition (20k shutter, new batteries, chargers and straps). I’ve heard a few bad things about the US MPB but the UK version is great. Martin Castein (RU-vid) also does a great overview of the model for specifically weddings. I still keep one of them for my secondary camera. I would pair this up with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC USD and then build up some primes (35mm and 85mm or 105mm) around it

Hi David, great video. I have the D600 and it was, back in the day, and still is today, an excellent camera. You can solve the aperture control issue in Live View by assigning aperture control in the menu to the aperture ring on your lens (if your lens has an aperture ring). When you want to use Live View and this will allow you to change the aperture on the fly in photo and video Live View mode. The only negative to this is that you will need to reassign aperture control to your camera dial for fuller aperture control when not in Live View as when you assign aperture control to you lens ring you are limited to the F stops marked on the lens ring and when aperture control is assigned to a dial on your camera, you can also select the inermediate third of stops between those marked on your lens aperture ring. I hope this helps you. Keep up the good work. Andy

I have an F2, F3, FE and FM3a and a pile of old Nikkor lenses. I looked at the DF but they are still expensive so I picked up a mint D600 for £350 in the UK. Great camera and easy to use with old lenses, I did pick up a 50mm 1.4 G second hand though and that lives on the camera. It works seamlessly with all my old lenses so for very good value I have got a very good set up that I enjoy using and suits my needs perfectly. Im not a pro and cant bring myself to spend thousands so very happy with the D600. great video thanks from the UK

Thank you David. I have had my camera for many years, and now just getting back into shooting. My daughter is a dancer. I am trying to improve my indoor action shots. I am using manual, ISO auto and bracketing. I set the max iso at 2000 as you recommneded, but confused as to how to set the minimum shutter speed. I think ill set it at 1/100. With the low light and movement, it would for sure be blurry below 100, I'd think. Do you have any other setting suggestions for getting crisp indoor action shots? Do you think these settings sound good? Also, I changed from AF-A to AF C and hope that will result in more photos being in focus. I had alot out of focus last go around. Thank you. ( I am using Nikon AFs 70-300 4.5 to 5.6 lens...I just set it on infinity. I dont really know how to adjust the lens otherwise.)

I had a d600 which I loved but it had the dreaded oil problem. Nikon took it back and exchanged it, but that still had the same problem. They eventually exchanged it for a d610 which I still have.

@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls Год назад
The oil issues only really occurs to certain copies of the camera and even if it occurs, it's not that bad nor it is hard to clean anyway. :-) Regarding the prime lenses, I would say the 35mm and the 50mm would be a great starting point to go for! :-) Hope that helps, I thank you very much for watching and also for the compliment, really much appreciated it. @DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls Год назад
It can be a problem to certain copies of the D600 but it's not really that much of an issue. Furthermore, you can always ask the seller about the oil spots on the sensor. But since it really only affected certain copies of this model, in most cases, you will not get the model with the issue. So you can be sure of that. Hope that helps a bit. I have always owned Nikons and i must say i tried to like the d600 but just never felt that good feeling about it. The annoying small focus area, the body just feels fat and cumbersome and the low light focus really is a pain. It spent many years in the cupboard and i recently just sold it as i love my d7500 and z50 so much more. It was ok back in the day and much nicer than the d2x and D3, but i dont feel it stands the test of time. I wish i was one of those who love it.

Noise? Only shoot up to 1600 ISO? Lol. The D600 barely shows any noise at all through base ISO to 1600 and can be comfortably shot up to ISO 6400. Respectfully, it’s not a crop sensor, D600 has similar high ISO capabilities to some of the best full frame cameras ever. 15:38

D600 was a slug! Yes it was. No offense out there peeps, but this seemed to usher in Nikon’s slow ‘fall from Grace,’ with camera problems/recalls? D610 was Ok, but just Nikon saving their arse. Nikon will never recapture the ‘magic’ that was the D3/D300/D700 cameras! Peace
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls Год назад
Thank you for watching as well as for sharing your perspective. I indeed remember the time when Nikon had to recall the D600 as well as releasing the D610 just to "fix" the D600 issues rather than just admitting the flaws of the D600. The practice by Nikon did happen even before the D600 actually but since the D600 was also a "success" camera, the news really blew up bigger than all the other recalls/flaws in the past... You are right, there is really a magic feeling as well as also within the results of those cameras (D3, D300, D700, etc.), I really love them as well. I've covered the D300 in the past and yet to cover the D3 and D700, I really love those cameras too. :-) I think overall, despite the flaws that the D600 has, for now a days, it is still a good full frame camera to get under 300 euros considering the features, image quality out of the full frame sensor as well as the video quality. The dynamic range is still decent and the RAW files are still very robust. It might not be the greatest camera out there, but for those looking for budget full frame that is still capable and reliable, the D600 is one of the solid options. Thank you very much again for continuing to watch my videos as well as for sharing your perspective. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting. :-)

@@DavidCuhls Thanks again for your great reply. I DO appreciate your knowledge, and your coverage of these ‘vintage’ cameras. I shoot Nikon and Canon. Nikon always has been an ‘arrogant’ Company, and it was almost their undoing! I’m glad they have been able to stay alive, and are actually turning a profit? I think Nikon will continue to do well, but they are going to have to really ramp it up, and I hope it will not lead to problems as in the past. In all fairness, I think the earthquakes and Tsunamis back around March of 2011, really hurt Nikon, and I think they lost their “MoJo?” I think they will be alright, but I don't think they will ever be like they once were. I have a D500, and while it is a great camera, it still does not feel as good in the hand, as the D300 does. I have a D200, D300, and D700, not that it matters here. D500 bought new, the rest used. I like the feel of the D300 the best. It was a shame we never saw a D400, and it is doubly shame we will never see successors to the D500/850/780. It would have been very interesting to see what Nikon would have done. Especially taking the ‘Hybrid’ aspect of the 780, and advancing it. Oh well. Best to you David!
@marike1100
@marike1100 Год назад
Lol, proof that the internet has lots of wild opinions, often off the mark. The D600 was actually one of Nikon's most capable cameras, it has IQ that is still relevant to this day, its sensor top notch, in the top 30 of all cameras on DXOMark, with equal or better sensor performance / scores than modern cameras like the Sony A9II, and Z6ii. Not sure why you'd compare a ground breaking entry level FF, released around the same time as the inferior Canon 6D, with pro cameras like the D3 and D700, which by the way, couldn't touch the D600 for dynamic range. But the fact is the D600 was a huge hit and a fantastic images maker. The idea that there was a "fall from grace" for Nikon when they went on to release the ground breaking D800, D750, and D850, which many have called "the greatest DSLR ever created" is proof that you either misinformed or one of those D700/D300 fanboys who need tank-like build quality to shoot backyard flowers and birds, lol. Cheers.

@@georgedavall9449 you are plain wrong. @marike1100 is right : D600-D610 are the most capable cameras with enormous dynamic range. D500 as the best for wildlife, D810-D750 were really good and D850 touted as the best DSLR ever. Nikon is still relevant and will be in the future. The D3-D700 was great but time and technology have move on. "it is doubly shame we will never see successors to the D500/850/780 " : hahahaaaa 🤣. I will give you an advice don't be arrogant in life and pretending you know everything. What do you think now about the Z9 and Z8 ? Because right now the Z8 is the successor of the D850 and there is not a capable and affordable camera with a stacked sensor in the market like the Z8. That thing is a beast. Nikon never failed to bring outstanding cameras. They were and still are in the forefront of groundbreaking technology in the camera world

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I do agree with you that it is still a great camera that is reliable, produces great results as well as a good value for what it is and I would recommend it to many people who are looking into getting this camera and found a good offer on it. :-) I am sorry if some of my points were negative but I was only giving my general opinions on this camera (both the good and the bad) in case it might help some people out and/or if they are only just looking for a second opinion. That's all, but it of course doesn't change the fact the it is still a good reliable camera that produces great results for the price. :-) So harsh feelings, don't worry, since what I said in the video was only "my thoughts" not what is truly right and wrong and I respect you opinion.
