Ok, prepared to be wowed as I take the D600 into a difficult sunset. This is a great test for dynamic range and the Nikon is AWESOME! I took my Canon 7D along for good measure and also do some testing with the Canon 5D mark iii.

Lol @ the "banding in the windows" in the 5DIII files :d

@neonjack because most people considering this camera own a dx body and want to see if the fx cameras are worth it. I will have some videos comparing it to the 5D mark iii in a week or two

Is this a fair comparison? and APS-C sensor vs. a Full Frame sensor?
@learningcameras

Yep, I also have a video comparing it to the 5D mark III if you want to take a look. The 6D was not out yet at the time of this review.

Yes you are correct, the sensor size is critical to performance. As I said in the intro, the Canon 6D (direct competitor) is not out yet and most people would be upgrading to the D600 from a 7D and below or a D7000 and below hence why they would like to see the advantage the D600 offers. However, a few people have requested a FF comparison so I'll have it out with the 5DmkIII this week (stay tuned)...but i'm sure i'll see complaints that i'm comparing a $2100 camera with a $3500 camera.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
Yep, but remember, the Canon 6D was not out on 9-28-2012 when this video was made so that was not an option. I did compare the dynamic range of the 6D and 5D3 side by side and they are similar so a fair comparison can be made.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
Well, just for you, I have been comparing it to my 5DIII and will hopefully have the comparison up Tomorrow or Wednesday. The new Canon 6D sensor will likely be based more on the tech from the 5DIII anyway. But I know i'm going to upset many people by comparing the 7D sized, $2200 D600 to the $3500 Pro 5DIII. But until the 6D is out, that is the best I can do. Also, I figured most people looking at the D600 would be coming from a 7D or below...not a 5D mark2.

I'm strongly considering moving from the 7D to the D600, in part because I love shooting landscapes. This was very helpful. Keep up the good work!
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 12 лет назад
I agree, it is not a fair comparison, but I wanted to show if it was worth it for cropped camera owners to upgrade. No 5DmkIII owner will care about this camera most likely. However, I have a video with the 5DmkIII and the Nikon D600 coming next week. Plus the 5DmkIII is a significant amount more unfortunately.
@learningcameras

You can download the Nikon D600 raw file yourself from the link in the description to test it yourself if you don't believe. I also compared the D600 to the 5Dmark III which my camera of choice and the D600 (& D800) have some impressive abilities when you pull up the shadows and honestly blow away what Canon cand do. Canon just struggles with the shadows for some reason. Not sure what you are talking about exactly though. What part of the test do you not believe? I have the raw files
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
In another video I did the same test with the FF Canon 5D Mark III which performed better but still shows the shadow issue. This is more of a Canon issue than an APS-C issue. I use the 5D3 every day and have learned my limits in the shadows. When I use the D800 or D600, I have a very clean image in the shadows even when I boost them which I do often in landscapes, interiors, and architectural portraits.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
I did have dust on the sensor which seemed weird to me since I only had 1 lens and thus never changed the lens to let dust get in. I did not notice any oil. I did have 2 hot pixels though which is not good.

24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 on the Nikon and the Canon 24-105 f/4. Both shots were sharp on my monitor, the big difference is the extreme banding in the shadow areas on all the Canon cameras and non of those issues on the Nikons. I love my 5D3 but for landscape shots where I need to recover shadows (and some portraits), nothing beats the Nikon

@learningcameras

Yep, that is the lens I was using in this test. It's not my favorite lens in the world and I wish it was a constant f/4 instead but it is pretty sharp and focuses well for the price.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
Yep, the 7D is a great camera and is still a body I use often...especially for sports. The new Canon 6D was not out at the time I did this review so the 7D was the closest option to the D600. The 5D mark III (which I also reviewed) holds up a bit better than the 7D but when it comes to dynamic range, Nikon is the clear winner no matter what Canon body you throw up against it.
@EddyGL
@EddyGL 11 лет назад
What lenses were you using on each? Looks to me more like a lens problem on the 7D for the sunset, and not a camera issue at all.
@mainlymusicman
@mainlymusicman 11 лет назад
the nikon looks amazing. but when you said the shot is nothiong done to it, no HDR just highlights adjusted and shadows adjusted, isnt that essentially what hdr would have done? did you up the exposure of the grass in the raw file or just made it lighter? in other words,would it have looked the same if you just brightened a jpeg file?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
Yep, you are right, a bit unfair but the 7D was the only Canon camera I had on me at the time and I wanted to show the differences. I did later to a full comparison between the Nikon D600 and the Canon 5D mark III and guess what, the Nikon D600 still aces the 5D in dynamic range. It's just something Nikon does better than Canon. You might watch that video as it is a more direct comparison. The Canon 6D was not out at the time so a comparison between those was not an option.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
Feel free to take a look at my video showing a dynamic range comparison with the 6 month old FF Canon as well A.K.A the 5D mark III. But for those who have a D7000 or 7D that are considering upgrading to a new FF camera, they will enjoy this video more. This is more of a test to see the advantages these less expensive FF cameras have to the DX cameras for those who can't afford or don't need PRO level D800's or 5Dmk3's.
@cornholio4ya

What were the Lens used for this shot ? I can see that the shot in the D600 is quite a lot sharped and detailed when looking at a crop in your video at around 3:00 . Also there is a known fact that different lens behave quite differently on the same body in a difficult lighting scene such as this one. Some lens can give you a whole lot more details in the shadows or highlights compared to others so this could be a factor.
@cornholio4ya
@cornholio4ya 11 лет назад
I see - however there's a pretty obvious sharpness between the shots. Either the lens or a slight miss-focus. Can you tell us what lens you used for both cameras? Just curious.

I'm thinking about buying D600 and almost decided but got discouraged by the rumors that D600 has issues with dust and/or oil on the sensor.Most of the people are reporting dust on the sensor even after 1 week of use. Did you experienced anything similar to this? Thanks
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
No problem, just put the 7D file in there as well. The 7D is great on the highlights but as you raise the shadows in the Canon, you will see banding. If the image is slightly under exposed, the issue becomes worse. The Nikon does show some grain when pushing shadows however, you do not see the banding

The 6d is not out yet so that is unfortunately impossible. We don't even have an estimated release date so Nikon may hold the thrown for a while in this segment
@learningcameras

24-85mm kit lens. The glass seemed to perform well though I'm not a fan of the variable f/3.5-f/4.5 and wish it was a constant f/4. I had to keep it at f/4.5 most of the time because otherwise it would change if I zoomed the lens and mess up my exposure. The lens barrel is also extremely stiff. At least Nikon can design a lens cap...Canon lens caps are impossible to remove with a hood on the lens.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
I also compared it to the 5D mark III (take a look at my other videos) which is as fair as possible on Sensor tech since the 6D will be based on the 5DmkIII technology instead of the 5DmkII. The 5DmkIII has very good dynamic range, even when pushed, but is still not as good as the Sony sensors in the D600 & D800.
@TheSQDoctor

I wish more videos had head-to-head comparisons of lenses and bodies shooting the exact same shot. Too many times the reviewers just talk about features, but in the end it's the quality of the pictures that should be the deciding factor. This is not a question about being "fair" to the Canon crop sensor. This video shows how much more you get going FX.

No sharpening or anything other than the defaults that lightroom applies which would be the same for both cameras. I put a link in the post to a folder containing the raw file. Also, I have been using the 7D and 5D3 for a long time and they all have issues in the shadows. Even my 5D3 can't be pushed anywhere close to 100% where as the D600 & D800 (don't have a D4) have no problems in every type of shot. Canon is good with the highlights but no shadows.
@AshBashVids

The DR benefit only works for low ISOs. At ISO 800-1600, Canon and Nikon and pretty much equal. You also forgot there is a DR difference between APS-C and FF.

just to be fair the 7ds shot was taken earlier. you probably should have gotten two tripods and taken the shot at exactly the same time. the 7d has more glaring from the sun as well as clipping in the highlights because of this i would assume. i wanna get the d600 so bad tho. anyone know when they're next full frame is coming out?

I like the comparison. This settles the question is the full frame worth it or do you want the speed and auto-focus of the 7D. Of course speed doesn't matter if you're not getting quality. Please do a comparison like this, when the Sony A99 and Canon 6D are available.
@learningcameras

You do know I actually shoot Canon. My main cameras are 5D3's and my backups are 7D's at the moment though they will likely change to 70D's for the backups shortly. But even I can't deny the unbelievable dynamic range and low shadow noise of the Nikon cameras and I love the D800 & D600 for landscape especially.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
An HDR would have worked. The fact is, cameras cannot hold the amount of light our eyes do and if we expose for the sky, the ground goes dark and if we expose for the ground, the sky blows out, even though my eyes can see both. HDR would have fixed this but it means getting 3+ shots, more post work, likely getting a tripod, and doesn't work well for moving subjects. So it is nice when the camera captures the detail in the raw file so I can bring it back in post. Jpeg can't rescue blown out areas
@anfanglove
@anfanglove 8 лет назад
why using canon for the crop and nikon for the full frame? to show that nikon is better? would be fair to compare 7d and 5d or d600 vs d7000 or 5d mk3 vs d600
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 лет назад
+Adrian Wee So the Canon 6d wasn't out yet when I was testing the D600 so the only camera I had along close in price was the 7D. Keep in mind that full frame vs crop isn't everything...the Nikon D7200 scores better on DXOMark's sensor test than the D600 for landscape dynamic range and the D7200 is a crop camera like the 7D. Pixels per inch can also be a big factor and technically each pixel on the 7D is almost the same size as the D600. But yes, a more fair test would have been the D600 vs the 6D or maybe the 5D3 but that camera is further in price from the D600 than the 7D was
@anfanglove
@anfanglove 8 лет назад
Dan Watson as far as i have read or heard there are more opinions stating that nikon is superior when both cameras are in the same class. Honestly i doubt when 5d family cams are confronted with any nikon fx cams they would perform better. The 7d isnt even better than the 5d in my opinion in terms of both image quality or dynamic range, so putting it in a confrontation agains the new fx warrior is somehow feels unfair. But then if thats your reason then i can understand.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 лет назад
+Adrian Wee I'm in full agreement with you. The only reason I included the 7d is that it was the closest Canon camera in price to the D600 since the Canon 6D was not out at the time. Most people back then were picking between the Canon 7D and the Nikon D600 as a result. The Canon 5D3 was in a price class way above and most people were considering the 5D3 vs the D800 as a result. I'm in full agreement that the sensor size affects dynamic range and that a more fair test from a sensor side of things would be two full frame cameras. But as far as price and market competition were concerned, the Canon 7D was the closest competitor to the Nikon D600 in September 2012. In fact, that was what made the D600 so amazing...it was the first full frame camera under $2000 so it placed a powerful full frame camera in direct competition (only $400 more) with high end APS-C cameras like the 7D. Even right now, the Nikon D610 is the exact same price as the Canon 7D Mark II on B&H.
@svtcontour
@svtcontour 7 лет назад
Ya but regardless, the test is flawed. You could have picked up a used 5D mark II for even cheaper and it would have done better because its full frame. So you cannot compare price. You have to compare like products. In this case - full frames.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
If you shoot landscape, the switch might be worth it. I still prefer Canon for most things though. However, you can't deny the ability of Nikon raw files and the crisp blacks and shadows they deliver. If you were to put the 6D vs the D600 (I had both), the D600 wins in my book (other than video) but you don't want to chose a system over a single camera body. I still prefer Canon in most areas though I love to pull out a Nikon if I need to boost the shadows or get some crisp blacks.
@borism68
@borism68 12 лет назад
It is obvious that the D600 really kills the 7D in Dynamic Range (being a new Full Frame sensor against a 4 year old crop sensor) , but I am wondering if the Canon lens lost contrast due to some flare from the sun? I can see the star flare from the sun on the Canon shot but not that much on the Nikon, Maybe the Nikon lens handles the flare better? Just a thought , but pretty much Nikon Full Frame much superior (as expected) to the Canon Crop, Thanks for the comparison
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 11 лет назад
Seriously, as a Canon user, I could not believe it myself. I have uploaded the RAW file per your request and have added a link to the video description. If you want to be amazed, just open the file in lightroom 4, increase shadows all the way, lower the highlights all the way, and just stare at the HDR like image that is displayed on the screen. No photomatix required. No vibrance, white balance change, noise reduction, or clarity was used.

love my D600 - it's like finally I am back to what I was able to do in a dark room with a good negative. With this camera, you almost never miss the shot due to lighting issues. The upgrade from my D7000 to this camera was like skipping several generations of bodies (I had D40, D90 and D7000 before, and never was there that much of a gain in what the camera actually recorded). If you shoot RAW files, the dynamic range matters more than resolution.

than you very much, I'm banging my head in deciding if switching to 6D from 7D, but I'm sooo in favour with Nikon D600 and completely leaning to switch from 7D. D600 gives Mark III quality (not for video) - even better for me.. but this would give me a lot of headache selling lenses and stuff... 6D would save me hassle of selling and buying lenses, etc...

Nice comparison on sensor technology, I know they're both in different league as in release date and technology; but you did a good job highlighting on aspects many people (at least in my area) don't care about. Maybe you should compare 7D with D7000 instead. Additionally, I think you should crank up both cameras to their optimum settings, e.g. improve DR, reduce noise, maintain details, etc.

I have a D600, and the amount of data it records in the RAW is very impressive. But comparing it to the 7D is silly. There is a huge gap in price and sensor specs. It's just not fair to do this. The only thing you can reasonbly compare it with today, now, is the out-going 5DmkII, and then the 6D when it hits store shelves. Having personaly compared it directly with a 5DmkII: D600 for stills by miles, the 5D even now if you're all about video.

Also, not that it matters, but you made a spelling mistake and put "mari III" instead of mark III. No biggie, just mentioning it. :-) Very nice though man. Thank you so much for doing this. Canon guys whining below about FF vs apsc, It wouldn't matter: the truth is Nikon's lineup has 2-3 more stops of latitude than canon across their entire lineup. this is something canon really needs to fix, a lot of nikons near 15 stops, even my video camera has 13 stops, most canon's have around 11 stops (yes even the 5d), thats belive it or no not that much above a good cellphone. Canon's are great cameras ,but they cannot touch nikon's DR.

I don't quite understand this comparison, the 7D is a sports-photography camera that no other camera on the market can come close to, it has 19 cross-type auto-focus points and 8fps AND it's 3 years old.The D600 has 9 cross-type auto-focus points and 5.5 fps, the 7D's buffer is larger 130 (with new firmware) vs 100 for the Nikon, the 7D is fully weather sealed and made of strong alloy, not the Nikon, the 7D is less expensive. Yes I own a 7D.

agree. Everyone is comparing all cameras against each other! Pointless. Like comparing a Megane 1.5dci with a BMW 330i or something! note: D600 is fully weather sealed as well.

i own canon 7D before, it is a good camera, but the noise performance and also Dynamic range has no way better than full frame camera. I switch to nikon d600 due after comparing to canon 6D, i sold all my 7D and all my canon lens, I would say i am happy with my D600 now. if you are looking for a lightweight full frame camera i believe nikon D600 is better to have.

I downloaded the file and yes Lightroom excepted it and I played with your suggested settings, a pre-set and a touch darker and this is what I got, very nice. dl.dropbox.com/u/11232883/%40FernandzPics/DSC_0001-1.jpg

This is ridiculous, the editing on the D600 was so biased. "Pushing the shadows and dropping the highlights.." ? It seems you forgot to mention the ridiculous amount of saturation you added for the D600.

@learningcameras 10 лет назад
No Saturation boost. All that color information is already there in the highlights and shadows so when I dropped the highlights and boosted the shadows, the sky especially just popped. I posted the RAW files on my site (link is in the description) so you can download the files and compare yourself. Don't take my word for it. It's no secret that Nikon RAW files offer some of the best DR of any DSLR. That doesn't make it a great camera but the sensor is definitely one of the best you can find.

I really could care less about the MP's and I don't know if this video is biased or not; but it is inline with everything from DXO to every other test I've seen including SLR Lounge. The Nikon cameras (Sony sensors is really what we are talking about) is upwards of 2~3 stops better than the Canon. I think the Canon people are getting jipped.

Albert Yang I'm with you on MP's. I use a Fuji x100s & a Canon 5D Mark II for primary shooting, but there are plenty of situations where a 20x30 print is ordered for a client, that I had taken with my 8MP iPhone. The truth of the matter regarding dynamic range vs canon/nikon though, is in the real world results; there are numerous factors at play in the equation this way, and the favor can really be tossed either direction. Assuming we are only talking about dynamic range for these two cameras reviewed, my point was to disprove the dramatic difference that's shown in this video. The OP provided the original RAW files, and in retracing the same steps, the results I posted in the screen shot, did indeed show a more practical result, closer again to real world results. In the end though, I think the consumer will have done his or her homework in considering ALL factors and differences between the body's. I don't feel jipped at all, because I knew which camera would work better for me, and that's where doing tyour homework will benefit most for the higher spending consumer. Have a read here, if you are interested in other's who say the same. In the end, when the photograph is out there for the world to see, nobody is going to be able to look at your photo, in its tangible form even, and say, "oh that came from a canon or that came from a nikon," based on the dynamic range. Thanks for replying. photo.stackexchange.com/questions/53998/are-nikon-dslr-sensors-actually-better-than-canons

One of my daughter's classmate's mother asked how I got such incredibly sharp images; sharpest she's ever seen. "What is the name of the lens??" she asked. "TRIPOD" I replied. A modern lens @F8 with mirror up and on a $1500 tripod will yield amazing results regardless of camera nowadays. That said; I find that mostly scenery to be the one that I really need DR. Portraits etc.. I generally don't need that much shadows unless I'm shooting BW's. That said; I wanted to also state that most women (yes WOMEN) aren't all that keen on too sharp of a lens for portraits.. Photography is 50% Art 50% Science. Generally no right answer. But if I had to start new with a new system and I wanted to do mainly landscape; I'd look long and hard at Sony or Nikon instead of Canon. If you have lenses though; then that's a different beast altogether.

Ive had 5DMark II, D700, D7000 before...all the best photos I took (landscape) were taken with a Nikon. The D7000 has better dynamic range than 5DMarkII.

This bad boy handles 1600 noise free(even 3200 is noise-free if you consider that as noise-free too.). I doubt 3 stops could make so much difference between 100 and 400. :)

should have compared with 6D but good review

No doubt Nikon has an edge when it comes to HDR and also it utilizes the 14 Bit color space to the maximum and this is where Nikon distinct from its rivals.

Ohhhh c'mon. You can't compare dynamic range like this. You should have taken a JPG with the most flat profile you could get for both cameras. RAW images are 32bit and can't be displayed correctly and when you convert to TIFFs they are conformed to a predefined preset that are probably different one of other specially using different software.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 лет назад
I would argue you a bit there because my workflow IS shooting RAW, making some adjustments in ACR and then moving to photoshop and sometimes other software where it is converted to a tiff file. If you want a more 'real life test' RAW to Tiff is way truer for me than flat jpegs. I never shoot jpeg so I could care less how many stops I see in the flat jpeg. I care about how the RAW file responds to processing because that's how I will be using it.
@LingBaneHydra

I thought about what I said and realize that either ways wouldn't work. I'm sorry. When you shoot a JPG, the camera apply a profile to create it. However, 32Bit RAW images can't be displayed even in 10bit monitors. I always shoot RAW too. It's very good to have some room in post. Maybe looking at the white clip point and black clip point maybe? What you think?
