Nikon D610 is among the most affordable full frame cameras these days. Therefore it is much desired by many people. In this video I review Nikon D610, tell you about my experience with this camera. You’ll see what I like about Nikon D610 and what I perhaps like less about it. I’m showing you many sample images and sample videos taken with Nikon D610. Overall Nikon D610 is a very capable dSLR that I highly recommend to new users. It is capable, fun, sturdy and you can easily find high quality and affordable lenses for it. But most importantly Nikon D610 offers an amazing image quality. I show you how Nikon D610 works and what some of its main functions are. This is not an in-depth technical review of the camera. Get the Nikon D610 while you still can and I you will not regret it?

Yes that D610 was a great camera back in its days. I you got it new, you can probably keep it shooting till the cows come home. But this is Nov 2023. Don't limit its use, you can still create good images with it, also use it to pound in nails, and even use it as a small boat anchor. Thanks so much for your post.

I have an Ex. condition D610 arriving in a few days. Had one before but tried out M43 for the smaller size. While there are advantages and disadvantages to all formats the dynamic range of the D600/D10 series is on another level compared to the best M43 sensors. And if you look at DXO specs one will find the older models like the D610 still are very competitive with the full frame Z cameras. As for size I am keeping things simple with AFD primes which are small and affordable. I cannot afford 2 or 3 primes for the z system. So yeah for under $500 the D610 is a hell of a bargain and still better than most of us.

Good review of a very capable camera. Of note; Tilt and Tilt & Flippy screens were available on many cameras even as far back as 2004. My old Canon G5(2004) had both tilt and flip. Even Nikon Coolpix(s) had it before the Nik-610. For myself, those functions are essential for my often used near ground perspective.

great review, I think this will make a great starter camera for my mom who wants to join me for my birding adventures. just like people thought film would die I doubt DSLRs will ever fully die off, rather they will coexist with mirrorless someone will continue to make them and people will continue to repair them. I know I will continue to use my Canon EOS T3 for the next few years, it's still amazing and I mastered it and with 60,000 photos through it it's still clicking away at 10 years old.

I have few Nikon dslr's, and all of them except d610 are pro types. But still, d610 is my main camera for work - it is so light in hands, reliable, files are exceptional, results are very satisfying. I went to sell it few times, but I am just too attached on it, it is only camera that I received it new, and it was as replacement for faulty d600 (bad shutter and oil on sensor). Very underrated camera, I choose it over more expensive d810..

I wanted to finally get a camera with a full frame sensor and more features. Since my budget was tight, the D610 was inexpensive to buy. Hi Tom, another excellent video. A somewhat unrelated question. Why did you choose the Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro VC, instead of the Sigma 105mm macro (or a Nikon macro)? I use Canon cameras, and I don’t have a macro lens, and I am undecided between the Tamron, the Sigma and the more expensive Canon 100mm L macro lens. At the moment I am tending towards the Tamron (F17 model, as I can update it through the Tamron console for use with mirrorless cameras.)
@tom_photo
@tom_photo Год назад
Hi Alberto! Good to hear from you. I didn't have a very good reason to prefer the Tamron. It just so happened that I found one and I started to like it. Later I did some research that confirmed that the Tamron was a bit sharper than the Sigma. The Sigma had its own advantages and scored better with regard to some aberrations but the Tamron was sharper. The Tamron is also the most affordable of the three (the Nikon being most expensive). I'm quite certain that all of the three lenses are very good but I'm happy with the Tamron. I might like a bit faster focusing and would appreciate if the length of the lens didn't change that much during focusing - but these are all minor problems for me. Kind regards!

Hi! Thank you for asking. I sometimes hesitate to give very concrete advice about buying cameras because people have different tastes and different needs. But this time it's different. The Nikon D610 wins in almost every category against the Canon 5D MII. The only two things that can tip the balance in the direction of Canon are the max shutter speed of 8000 (against Nikon's 4000) and the price. Everything else speaks for the Nikon. I hope I could help you. Kind regards!

Great review, I'm currently debating which FF Nikon to get as an upgrade from my D3200. I mainly shoot events and automotive. My D3200 is nice and is still a good camera to this day but I find it lacking in low light even with fast lenses, the continuous shooting is also rather slow. It also does not have that many features, not that I need many honestly. I was considering the D610, D800 and D750. The D610 is the cheapest of them, around 400euro for a semi low shutter count, there is at least a 200-300 euro difference between it and the other two. What would you recommend?
@tom_photo
@tom_photo 4 месяца назад
Hi ArtistKS! Thank you for this question. Some people would probably say that the D750 is the best of these cameras. However, "best" means different hings to different people. The D800 has 36 Mpix. Some people may need this to make huge prints. For me this is a downside because the pixel area is the smaller. The D800 is also larger than the others - again a problem in my book. A real advantage of F800 for me is its max shutter speed of 8000. This is faster than the others and you can shoot bright primes more wide open in bright light. The D750 has a tilting LCD and that may be important when shooting close to the ground. None of the cameras are anything special for video. It is difficult to say that one of these cameras is the best for sure. For the same price I'd personally get the D750 but considering price differences and the fact that all cameras produce similar photo quality, I'd go with the D610. I'm happy with my D610 and I'm producing more videos on different aspects of the camera. I hope this helped you a little. Best of luck to you with your camera purchase!

@@73kudos Hi! The D610 is capable of producing amazing image quality. However, it has a small problem when it comes to portraits. Its face recognition system only works in live view, which is clumsy. This Sunday, I'll post a video comparing the D610 and D750, and I conclude that the D750 is better for portraits. However, even the D750 is not perfect in that regard. If you specifically want portraits, you may want to consider hybrid cameras. I was considering moving up to a Nikon D750 as an introduction to full frame until I started noticing these. Ok, having that tilt screen is handy for those low shots, but they are much more expensive than the 610 and have the same image quality. Still, now that I am getting the most out my current D7100 and seeing the great results, I am starting to question the need for full altogether. I just bought it for 200e! Damaged but only 22000 clicks. No OK button. 😄

the only thing I don't like with the D610 (and the D600) is the autofocus system. I've used a D7000 for a little while (which has the same system) and though the single center point performance is "good enough", the moment you step in zone focusing or tracking, the camera just feel like dumb hunk of plastic and metal that can't seen to know what's in front of it. Not like it's unusabe for daily things, even a bit of event photography, but for anything that moves a little faster, the autofocus just doesn't track properly which is definitely limiting. And that's a shame, because the sensor is still good, the ergonomics are also good, it has double SD slots, it shoots decently fast and it's affordable. If it had an accurate AF system as well it could have been the best value for money camera on the market for someone that wants to dip their toes into paid work. And I think that's why the D750 (which is basically the same camera with a tilt screen, and the 51pt AF system) is still much more popular than the D600 today, even though those two bodies are so similar. I myself value color and rendering more than the actual performance. I also happen to shoot sports, so for an affordable full frame DSLR, my choice went to the D700 instead of the D600/610. But honestly I feel like those camera bodies get overlooked nowadays, they're still very potent. I've used my D700 for a few sport events, and most people didn't even notice the difference with the 24MP images that I get out of my Fuji X-H1 (which is the camera I generally use for that). The fact that it's also super solid and almost doesn't use plastic at all for the body is also a little pet peeve of mine, I like my cameras to be sturdy :D

Hi Matthieu! Thank you for your very thoughtful response. I agree that the AF of D610 is not great. Since I'm primarily a landscape shooter I do not mind it very much. I typically photograph from a tripod and take a lot of time to focus. Thanks again and best of luck to you!

While I don't shoot a lot of action, I do take some dynamic shots with my D610 and my experience is much better than yours. The AF system has its obvious limitations but it's not bad at all in decent light and is more reliable and efficient than its counterpart on D7000 (I had that camera previously). Your problems may be due to the user error (e.g. too slow shutter speed) or may be caused by a miscalibrated lens (this can be adjusted to a degree in the body).

@@kociasek Hi kociasek! Thank you for your feedback. Sure, it is all very relative how good the AF is and it does depend on several aspects as you correctly stated. Kind regards!

You can't just presume that the af system performs the same as the d7000. I've got both cameras and the D610 does not have any of the focus issues that the d7000 had. 36 focus points are all usable.

My D610 has insanely good low light shooting, far better than even the D810, obviously partly because of the lower pixels
