As of the time of this video being posted, there wasn't any head-to-head comparisons done between the D7000 and the D600. Seeing as most people thinking about purchasing a D600 are probably coming from the D7000, I thought this was an appropriate review. I also think it's nice to see some reviews for videographers and not just photography since that's what I do.
In this video, I briefly go over some of the key differences between the D600 and D7000, what I like and don't like about each, and then show you the results to see for yourself. I shoot scenes from ISO 800 to ISO 25600 on the D7000 and the D600 in both DX and FX modes.
If you have any suggestions for other tests you'd like to see, please leave them in the comments below... or just let me know what you think of this video as it's my first one.
Also, check out my wedding videography company, GBVideo at gatorbridevideo...
EDIT:
I used the D600 and an old Nikon 28mm f/2 Ai'd lens to shoot the beginning part. Here's a video of someone showing off that particular lens model: • Nikon 28mm f2 Great Pr...

Kyle, I was referring to Myron & Michelle highlight reel, very stylized and great vision and excellent editing. I love the choice of music you chose to go along with this video, great work.

You're very welcome. I felt the same way and that's why I thought it would be prudent to get something out for people so that they can make better purchasing decisions.

You're very welcome! Yes, I have actually experienced those issues, but, generally you can only see the spots when you're shooting very wide angle (20mm and wider) and/or at an f/stop of f/8 or more. I'm usually not shooting like that but I have noticed the spots in some timelapse stuff I"ve done. In either case, it will go away on it's own over time. You can also get a sensor-cleaning kit for pretty cheap and do it yourself--its very easy and something you'll need to do eventually anyways.

Comparing doesn't have to assume that those cameras should be the same or nearly the same, it could mean to find the difference and what it really means in real life. This review was very useful and educating for me and I am thankful to the one who made it. Why don't you consider this before insulting the efforts of this polite man ... btw in my opinion both cars are the same, since they both do not deserve attention. They just look not nice for my taste ..)

Great question. Both sides offer slight advantages in different areas. Canon's have the option for a better video codec. Nikon offers clean HDMI out (I hear Canon is making a firmware update for the 5DMII to allow this). Canon also has a clear edge on High ISO performance on the 5DMIII. It's also $3500. 6D and D600 are the same price. I would choose/chose D600. IMO, you can't go wrong buying Nikon lenses (especially the AI-s variants) as they will work on just about any camera with an adapter.

Thanks for the great insight and comparisons between the two cameras. I ended up going for the D7000 and do not regret it one bit. I'll stick with DX for another year or two by then I'll be ready for a FX/Full Frame camera. BTW your business promotional videos amazing!

I can't tell the difference at all. I didn't notice the slight yellowing that the D600 does. Beautiful videos by the way. Gives me some inspiration to shoot some of my own.

Raf, I only shot crop on the D600 to show how it compared to the D7000 in that mode as well as I it's native FX format. I do occasionally shoot in DX mode outside when I need a little extra reach without having to change lenses. I now have 2 D600's and still have the D7000. Great setup for wedding videography.

Goo question! I'm using the D600 and an OLD Nikon 28mm f/2 Ai'd. It's an all-manual beat up lens that just so happens to be one of my favorite for shooting videos--it looks SO much more amazing on the D600 than it did on the D7000 because of the wider angle allowed by full-frame sensors. There's just something about the way this lens paints the image that just gets me all giggly inside. I've added a link to a video of someone showing one off.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 12 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah, DX really does do the job for most uses. There are a few other advantages (or disadvantages, depending on your perspective) to using an FX sensor camera. For instances, with FX sensors, you can achieve a shallower depth-of-field which will separate subject from the background more. This could be a blessing or a curse depending on the situation. It can be a pain when manually focusing (video) in very low-light situations but it can make it look awesome too if you can nail the focus.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 12 лет назад
You're welcome! Yeah, the next FF lens on my list is probably the Sigma 20mm f/1.8... not great for stills but it's more than good enough for resolving to 1080p (which is where the money's at for me)... and the extra light over Nikon's f/2.8 model is much appreciated since I don't have the luxury of a flash and using video lights while people are dancing around tends to ruin the mood a bit. If Nikon made a 20m (or wider) f/1.8 I'd start saving up right now (definitely would not be cheap).
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Thanks Jason! What you should choose really depends on what your needs are. From a video perspective, the only real benefits I can see with the D800 over the D600 is the metal build and bigger size (not worth $1000 IMO). From a stills perspective, I see more megapixels as a downside. 24mp is more than enough. It does have a much better metering and auto-focus system, though. If you're mostly doing stills and have the cash, go for the D800; otherwise, the D600 is a better/equal choice for video.

That was awesome and a proof that unless you need the wider angle and the better performance in very high ISO, you don't really need an full frame camera to get perfect results. I might be a little bias here but I love my Nikon DX format camera, and it performs great and with the same price it cost to buy an FX lens I can get a DX lens and an SB700! Again, I might be wrong or maybe im not seeing the full picture here, but to me DX's only real disadvantage is the narrower angle

Thanks for the video, there really isn't much with the D600 in low light currently. Great job. :)
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 12 лет назад
Yep! The FX sensor in the D600 is bigger than a DX sensor. So, the D600 provides you the ability to just use the DX portion of that bigger sensor so that you can use your DX and FX lenses whereas with FX, you can really only use FX lenses. Another added benefit which I basically refute in theses tests is that you can also get some added reach on your lenses. But, the quality seems to be degraded and has no added benefit to just cropping in post from my experience. Need a longer reach? Use D7000.

No problem xStosh. It's a fantastic camera in so many respects. You'll be very happy with it. Thanks for the kudos.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
It definitely does look better and I actually say that in the video. However, the D600 is an extra $1000 and that may be too much for some people just for an extra stop or so of noise-free ISO performance. In the end, I got one and am incredibly happy--but I can justify it as an investment in my company. If you're a videographer and already have a D7000 and are ready to make the next step, I'd highly recommend the D600 (even over the D800).
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Thanks Feckerhead! You've made the right decision. The D7000 is a great camera and will serve you well for many years to come. Which promo video are you referring to?
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Yes, I definitely would. It's much sharper and much better in low light. It also has headphone out, clean HDMI out, and is a way better camera for stills. The Mark II is quite a bit older than the D600. It really depends on what glass you have, if any, though. If you already have canon glass, I would go with a Canon 6D (or Mark III if you can afford it). If you have Nikon glass, I would go with the D600 (even though the glass would work on a Canon too). I'm partial to NIkon so I'd recommend D600
@johnabdn

Okay, thanks for your reply. I think the D800 is more than I want to invest in a camera, so probably the D700 is the way to go at the moment. Or I may go with Canon.. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

If you want my opinion, I highly recommend the 35mm f/1.8G--it's a superb DX lens and more versatile than a 50mm. The 50mm f/1.8 is an excellent lens too but it all really depends on what you're shooting. 50mm would probably be a little better if you're doing mostly portraits since it will separate the subject from the background more than the 35mm. Hope that helps.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Thanks! Just takes a bit of post work to get things to match up. It's an expected step in professional work anyways. In my opinion, it's best to get things as accurate as you can in the camera, though, to avoid copious tedium.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
After further use in real-world (wedding reception) scenarios, I can honestly say the D600 gets about 1-2 stops better low-light performance in FX mode vs the D7000. So, yes, f/4 on a D600 should look as good or better than a D7000 at f/2.8 (noise-wise) and will be about the safe DoF (assuming the same shutter speed).
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Depends on your shooting needs. I often need something as bright as 1.8 or even 1.4 primes but the 24-120 f/4 is a great all-around lens especially if you're mostly planning on shooting outside. It has VR which is a nice plus as well. The only thing I have bad to say about it is that the focus ring is really small and not as smooth as others. The range is perfect, though.... just wish the had a 2.8 version with a nicer manual focus ring, haha... for photos, though... a great versatile lens!

I would love to see the difference too. Unfortunately I don't have access to any of the addition professional cameras (very much wish I did). Personally, I'd like to see these two compared with the D800 and 5DMIII as well. In any case, I definitely think there are settings that could have made the video look better (namely: proper exposure and color-grading in post). D-lighting was turned off and High ISO NR was set to "Normal" on both cameras. I'm not sure I follow on the "gain" setting.

Yeah, I actually did have an issue with a rather annoying spot on my sensor that lasted for several hundred shots. It's gone now. I don't know how many photos I've taken so far, but, I'd reckon it's around 1,500-2,000. The spot really only showed up when I went to relatively high apertures like f/8 or f/11 and greater. It was more apparent when I used very wide angle lenses (like 14mm). I usually shoot at f/4 and lower, so, this didn't affect me much during the period that it was happening.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Yes, one reason is to allow you to use DX lenses. The other is to obtain extra "reach" when shooting video. It's kinda pointless when taking photos (in my opinion) since it's exactly the same as cropping in post, but, in video, to digitally crop the photo would reduce it's resolution to less than 1080p or even 720p (which would effectively make it no longer an HD video--not good). In other words, there are practical use-cases for it.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
D7000 and D7100 have the same physical sensor size. The megapixel # won't play a huge role in video except for maybe some added sharpness. The lack of an anti-aliasing filter should be interesting, though... Also, the ISO performance may be a bit better. The D600 will probably still be a better choice for video because of the low-light capabilities, wide-angle view, and shallow DoF. Remember, with a D600, you can shoot in DX and FX. With a D7000/7100, you can only go as wide as DX will let you.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
The D7000 does have a tighter pixel pitch than the D600 (same as the D800 I believe)--which is probably one reason why the D600 has better low-light performance (and maybe why D7000 is slightly sharper in video?). In the end, though, for video, the megapixel count of the sensor doesn't matter as much because the highest video resolution you'll end up with is 1920x1080. The pixels are interpolated or down-sampled in some way. It's how those pixels are interpolated that matters, it would seem.

The D5100 and D7000 have the same sensor so the image quality tends to be the same. The reason I say "tends" is because you don't have as much control over the settings with the D5100. So, all things being equal, the image will look the same (assuming the same lens as well). The variable is getting all things equal since there are no TRUE all-manual settings for video in the D5100. Very frustrating. The flippy screen thing is nice sometimes but it's rarely used in our work.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Your friend might either have (1) his white balance settings wrong, (2) a faulty D600. In either case, if he shoots in raw (.NEF), it's trivial to fix in post. The footage I showed in this test was necessarily un-modified footage directly from the cameras. I used the exact same lens on both cameras (not only the same model, but the same exact lens). You can see an examples of the D5100, D7000, and D600 in various conditions on gbvideo.com (check out Will + Sarah Highlight Reel for an example).

I haven't noticed them on my copies of the cameras, but I know there were some issues when those cameras first came out. Nikon had a firmware update and it seemed to have fixed the issue from what I remember hearing. All new cameras should come with that firmware pre-installed so I wouldn't worry about it.

Kyle, thanks so much for doing this - would love to see similar results comparing D3/4 and D800 to D600. I believe there are some settings that could make a difference in the comparisons you made between the D7000 and D600. In particular the gain setting and possibly the D-lighting and Noise reduction settings. Can you say what the settings were for these on each camera? Thanks.

@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
It was an apples to apples comparison with the same exact lens. You could see the texture on the wall better with the D7000. FX sensors do have a shallower depth of field, I guess, but, would it not be the same when in DX mode? Not really sure of the technicalities of that.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Actually LizardanNet, that, in my opinion would be a perfectly valid comparison for one trying to decide if they want to spend the extra money for features they don't necessarily need. Maybe they didn't know that Hondas come with leather seats or that the tires on the BMW they were looking at cost $800 a piece to replace. There a reason for a comparison of anything. The D600 and D7000 really aren't that different--just a different sensor pretty much.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
@rehotpearl1 Thanks! I would recommend getting some FX glass before moving to the D600. You can use your DX lenses on it, but, that kinda defeats the purpose. Your 35mm will work okay in FX mode (a little vignetting, though). You can get a 50mm (FX) lens for about $100. But, honestly, the D7000 is a GREAT camera and you won't really have any need to upgrade to the D600 unless you have a good range of FX lenses (which you can use on your D7000 in the meantime). Good luck!
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Yep, ace206, you have it exactly right. Good lenses are MUCH more important than a better body. While you can use DX lenses on a D600, if it's all you have just stick with the D7000. FX lenses work great on DX bodies. And then, when you have a few good options (something wide, say, a 20mm or 24mm, something in the middle, say, a 50mm, and something for portraits, say, a 85mm or 70-200mm) it's time to jump to FX. It's a real waste otherwise.

Thanks for the vid. I'm thinking of buying the D7000. Which camera and lens are you using to shoot yourself in the video?
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
@lemmecomment, Actually, yes! That's really the whole point of the video: Is the D600 worth the extra $1000? In my video, I conclude that it's not necessarily worth it unless you really need that extra 1-2 stops of low-light performance. As a professional videographer, it certainly is. For any other reason, just get the D7000. The D600 is a GREAT camera, but, for the vast majority of people, the D7000 will be more than acceptable--especially for half the price (with a lens!).

Congrats! Great choice! You know, in more-normal lighting conditions I found it to actually be MORE accurate than our other two cameras. But, when necessary, there are two ways to address it: (1) Post production. This is where I handle it, generally. (2) Fine Tune White Balanc. You can see how to customize this on page 117 of the user manual (nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/D600_EN.pdf). There's also a few guides on RU-vid you could watch to help you out. Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if you know the answer to this, but from what you've seen, how does the D600 FX video stack up against stuff from the Canon 6D or 5D MKII/III? Canon is obviously the popular choice for video uses, and I'm just wondering if it's wise to continue investing in Nikon gear (lenses, etc) when Canon might be the better solution. Thanks!

Not sure I'm following when you say "bad noise sound". Are you talking about the ambient noise in the voice over? In any case, I actually used the same 50mm f/1.8 AF-D on both cameras during the actual test. They only had different lenses on at the end to show off the cameras since I don't have two of the same lens.

Maybe it's just me but the D600 in DX mode still appears to be better than the D7000, both in noise and sharpness. Look at the holes on the utensil container - they appear sharper on the D600 both in DX and FF mode. I'm also seeing slightly more shadow detail from the D600 in DX mode and a LOT less noise at higher ISOs, especially with the cropped comparisons. Look at the noise in the ladel's shadow at 15:00 where you say the two cameras perform the same - the D7000 is quite a bit more noisy!
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
It does seem that Nikon is "digitally zooming" in on the FX shot instead of just using the DX portion of the sensor. Of course, you'd end up with a 720p video... yet the camera writes file in full 1080p. Magic? Either way, it's clear that the FX image is MUCH cleaner/sharper (obviously). Why test in DX mode? Because in THEORY, the D600 in DX mode should be the same as the D7000 as both would be using the same 24mm worth of sensor. Not the case, I guess. DX mode is useful for extra reach though.

You have 3 D7000's? Are you looking to replace each one with D600's? Or were you thinking of trading 3 D7000's to get one D600? The D600 is much better in low light, but, you'll need all full-frame lenses to take advantage of that. I currently use a D600 in conjunction with a D7000 and D5100. I would like to have another D600, but, I'll probably keep the other two cameras for additional angles and options.

I hope, as the time passed, you stopped considering shooting crop, since that's no option when having proper lens for the FX body. In this video, it may not have been clear to you, what the crop mode does, otherwise, you wouldn't have even thought about comparing the native mode in the d7000 with a crop mode in a d 600... no way! the D600 beats the hell out the D7000 natively. And yes, i am aware that you pointed that out that in the video aswell. So I strongly hope that you improved dude! By the way, I really like your side by side comparisions. Cheers & keep going!

The lowlight performance of the D800 is almost identical to the lowlight performance of the D600. Both D800 and D600 blow the D7000's lowlight performance out of the water. Check DxOMark and compare all three cameras. I'm not sure why you thought the D800's lowlight performance wasn't good. Checkout the video titled "ISO Test - Nikon D600 D700 D800 D4" You can see the 600 and 800 are almost identical. I have the D7000 and the D800 and the lowlight of the D7000 is nowhere near that of the 800.

Was the testing done with the same type of lens? My friend went from some kind of 10mp camera to the D600 with no experience and his photos all have that yellowing effect. It's either standard for the D600 or the D lighting does this. I'm just trying to see if it's the lenses causing any kind of slight change. He takes pcs of the beach a lot and the sky and water always look yellow tinted. I'm not sure I want that. Can you try getting pictures with blues, greens, pinks etc with both cameras?

Hi there! Just got my d600 today and I'm loving it but I noticed the same issue with the auto white balance...Tried playing with it to see if I could tone down the yellows somewhere but no luck yet, were you able to find out where to fine tune it? Thanks so much for all the info, great resource!

The focus point layout on the D600 are one of the downsides to the camera. The auto-focus system does seem to work pretty well, but, they are all clustered within the DX crop area. :-\ For video, I'm always manually focusing so it's not a huge deal for my profession. But, when I'm taking stills, it's mildly inconvenient. Still a lot better than the Canon 6D, though. :D

Hello, Good video. I have the D7000 and am thinking about going full frame. I have the Sigma 17-70, Nikon 35mm1.8g and the nikon 55-300 lens, I know the D600 has 24.3 mega pixel but it drops to 10 when using DX lenses? Can you speak to this? Would you not recommend the D600 over D7000 unless you have a line up of FX lenses?

Yep, the D600 is an amateur FF camera... but it's better than the D7000. The body is actually better-built than the D7000 (better weather sealing and slightly bigger). The sensor is actually much better than the D7000, hands down (especially for stills)--there are data and examples to prove that. A lot of D7000 owners already own a good amount of FX glass (I have the 50mm f/1.4, 70-200mm f2/8, & 28mm f/2). The D600 is a great stepping stone for those who need some time to save for 24-70, etc...

Hi, does the D600 focus more accurately and precicely in indoor situations? I am thinking of shooting performers on stage with a prime lens. I had a D5100 with a 35mm 1.8 which was not good. The body/lens combo back-focused when I got it, front-focused badly after Nikon looked at it (for a second time). I don't want to repeat this experience with a camera withuot the focus fine adjust feature, but am not sure which would be the better camera for in-focus low-light photography. D600 or D7000?

hi what do you think of the new coming d7100 vs d600? will there still likely be a significant difference in quality between the larger sensor and a smaller one?

Is it possible with settings to make it write files in 720p in DX mode? What about the size of 1080p in DX mode? Is it smaller for the same scene taken with FX,even though both mode would write 1080p as far as I understood?Does camera have any "jelly"effect in low light conditions from your experience?I can suggest comparing both cameras in moving condition and may b also to see how shaking affects both in video motion, for instance dragging them both on the table, while shooting video.Thx inAdv

Would you consider the D600 better than the 5D Mark II for video? I'm really into film and i really want to buy a full frame camera and both of them are around the same price. Thanks :]

do u know something about the hot/dead pixel and oil spots on the d7000 sensor ???d5100 has the same problems ?? I've done a research and seems like Canon dove have this problems .. is true ??

Yes, thats what i said. On d600 is a fake DX :D. A d600 will make on DX a max size photo of 3936x2624px (10,3 megapixel) and a d7000 4928x3264px (16.2 megapixel). There are cameras with DX sensors that can make bigger pictures with the same sensor size (d7000 vs d90). I dont know the technical explanation but i think that the d7000 sensor has more photodetectors in 23.6 mm × 15.6 mm than d600 in 23.6 mm × 15.6 mm. I hope somebody can explain that :D.

I don't get it why to compare FF d600 in dx mode I wouldn't buy fx and pay such cash to shoot in dx it just not right it just like buy v8 car shut off 2 cylinders and compare it with other v6 why would I do that ? I mean I could but why make a comparison ? It is clear that dx mode is not designed for d600!? Of course you could shoot in dx mode Iit would be same analogy I could drive on 4or 6 cylinders on my v 8 car but why?

Hi Kyle, awesome comparison! btw, I am very interested in this 'old' Nikon 24mm lens. What is the exact type and would you have a link to another video shot with it? Cheers, Robert
@KimberlyBlytheFarris

Hey Robert, it's actually a AI'd 28mm Nikkor. Here's one just like it. www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-Nikkor-N-28mm-f-2-Camera-Lens-Non-Ai-SN-280678-/400504956191 The copy I have looks even "uglier" and more busted than that one. It's a neat lens because I think it was designed before color film was prevalent and so the colors it renders are very interesting. Not contrasty but very vintage-y in nature--especially wide open (sorta soft).

you can shoot in DX mode with d600 ?? i dont understand ???
@EPurpl3
@EPurpl3 11 лет назад
lol, the DX mode on d600 is just a crop from the original photo or video. Is like taking a video, croped and than resized it on 1080 so of course that d7000 is sharper. So why would anyone test the DX mode? you pay for a FX so use the god damn FX.
@kylefarris
@kylefarris 11 лет назад
Yep, buy FX lenses. The only real benefits to buying DX lenses is price and weight. FX lenses typically work even better on DX cameras because you'll be using the lens' sweet spot (less vignetting, corner-softness, etc...). Unless you intend to stay in DX for a long time (which you are not it seems), always purchase FX glass. And, for that matter, don't settle for any FX glass... get the good stuff. Remember... the poor man pays twice. :-)

Did you pay for me to provide the information? No. Do I provide this as a professional commercial service? No. Should I expected to be perfect? No. I don't understand the point of flaming this bit of free information I've provided to the you. If you don't like it, don't watch it--no need to criticize the delivery.

The comment section is exactly ment for criticism, so "don't watch it" is not the only option available. More options are: "watch it and criticise it", "watch it and dislike it", or "watch it and like it!" Since you are free to express your opinion through the video, others are free to express their opinions about your video aswell. If you publish content, then you must be ready to get some critic. Otherwise, don't publish content.... Just like me :-P

..and yes, people are indeed paying to watch your videos, since watching a video is time consuming. You exchange time with information... by using a matematic equation you can exactly calculate how much money every user is paying for watching your video. E.g. My time worths about 175€ per hour, so watching a 20 mins video costs me around ... ...aaagh... you can do the math by yourself (:-P) ...since I'm trying to save money...

Hi I can't find how to change the ISO in video mode/live view. I set it to 1600 before changing to movie/live view but then when I switch it shows 'iso 100' on the screen and the usual place I'd change it on the menu is greyed out...
