The Nikon D7100 is the latest in a line of midlevel DSLR cameras to be released. As always the big questions are, how does this camera rank against the D7000 that it replaced as well as its Canon counterparts. Well this review is not about how one camera matches up against another but it how the D7100 is as a camera.
First off this camera sells for $1,199 body only and currently is Nikons top of the line DX camera since the D300s has yet to be replaced. We all know that as cameras progress the tech inside continues to get better and better. The D7100 definitely benefits from some major tech updates.
This is how I like to do my reviews, I like to use the camera, push it to its limits in the real world and let you analyze the results for yourself. That is why you can access all of the FULL-RES images from this review as well as download eight RAW FILES. To me its about giving you the samples to make your own judgments and decisions about a camera.

It's now 2024 and me and my D7100 are still out there together. BUT i'm now on my way to a Z8. The D7100 is fantastic value for money and has served me well.

One of the best reviews i have seen on RU-vid. Thank you for the entertainment and down-to-earth review. Love the Go-pro mount on the top of the camera as well, very ingenious. Looking to get a D7000 as a amateur camera.

Recently started taking an interest in photography as a hobby. Bought a Nikon D7100 from a friend who recently upgraded and didn't need it anymore. I am pretty happy with it. The image quality is superb, even though it's 9 years old.

I need some help, Canon 70d or Nikon d7100? I'm worried that if I get the Nikon, it won't be that good for taking sports and wildlife photography due to the fact its buffer fills up rather quickly.

Jared, thanks for this review. I have this camera and simply love it. I use it both for family photos and also for some professional shoots. Though I am not a full time professional I do make some extra cash on the side shooting images for a fishing magazine. Quality glass is your best friend indeed.

I’m in some sort of dilemma. Would you advise to go for a camera with high specs and miss out on the wifi/Bluetooth feature (Nikon D7100) or go for lower specs but get the wifi/Bluetooth features (Nikon D5300) ? I intend to use the camera for wedding photography and state functions. A friend was asking me not to pick the D7100 because it doesn’t have the wifi feature however, I can’t stand missing out on all the good features the camera offers in exchange for wifi .

What Picture Control setting do you use? SD, NL, Custom? I noticed you have the contrast boosted quite a bit more than what I do when post processing in Lightroom, yet your images don't look over-contrasty like mine do at the same level.

Thank you Jared. This review is helping understand the feature trade space of the various Nikon bodies as we pick our next upgrade from the intro 3000. Of particular help were the concert photos and the low light performance although the baseball session is important. I'm a long way from my Canon F1 - the digital photography age is just amazing.

when you outrun the buffer how long does it lock up for, just long enough to dump 1 image worth of data from the buffer, or does it wait until the entire buffer is clear?

reduce the size of the image and you can shoo as fast as you want. what shoot a 24 MP My d7000 was a 16 MP and I shot sports photos all day at 16mp 6 frames per sec.I use a SanDisk 32GB 95MB/s Extreme PRO card never had to Waite on the buffer .
@danielbatts9386
@danielbatts9386 9 лет назад
From what I've read in articles about sports photography, most pros will shoot in jpg because the buffering time is much shorter. As you mentioned, using fewer MP would help that too. Most sports shots aren't going to need as much post work either so what information you lose by shooting in jpg as opposed to raw probably won't be an issue anyway.
@froknowsphoto
@froknowsphoto 11 лет назад
I have been shooting sports for a long long long time and I would not shoot jpeg in my D4. You will not outrun your buffer in a D4 EVER. The only way would be if you shoot for 4 straight seconds without taking your finger off the shutter button. And the 1DX which I have sitting right here is the same way if not better. You would have to hold your finger down for 3 seconds to outrun the buffer. And with that said the buffer is amazing in the 1DX

Thank you for your review for the camera. This is the best review I have seen so far. One thing you did not cover was the 3d tracking. That would have help keeping focus with the baseball player once you focused on him. I find it better then using just the continuous option. BTW, I bought my D7100 from Alan's Camera.

Jared...appreciate all you do and want to thank you for videos like this. This video helped to see real life use of the camera as I have a smaller brother in baseball. I currently have a D3200 with a 35mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8G, 85mm 1.8G and the stock lenses that came with them. I am considering to upgrade in the future but torn between the D7100 and D610. I know full frame is a way to go eventually but with the value for a refurbished Nikon D7100 to be $600 sounds like a great deal. Even around the holidays I saw it go down to $450! I dont do photography professional but did do a wedding for a friend and some parties here and there. Considering that the D610 has a better size sensor would you recommend that over the D7100 for someone like me? Should I even think of the D7200? Or continue to invest in lenses?

Hi Jared, I was wondering why where You shooting at iso 400 instead off iso 100 on such a bright and sunny day? I Always try to shoot at the lowest possible iso number according to the light situation. Greetings Richard. The Netherlands
@wava2552
@wava2552 5 лет назад
because if aperture in max open already, and still cant get sharp image on long focal length, you must using a higher iso, so shutter will be faster. if you use long focal length, you need faster shutter speed for maximum sharpness of the image..

Thanks for the in-depth review. I've been on the fence between the 7100 and the 610 or a used 600. Looks like, although it's a DX, it has several of the advantages of an FX at a reduced price (and since this review the price has dropped even more). I out grew my 3100 a few years ago and maybe it's a smarter idea to stay within the DX but get the highest end and spending that savings over an FX on updating the quality glass I have rather than having to sell a kidney for a fast FX lens. You're the tits Fro, keep the good work.

Anyone know how to access the “network” submenu of the “setup” menu? It is greyed out whatever I try.

Found the answer. You need a network adaptor (Ut-1) that goes onto the accessory shoe on top of the camera to be able to access the network submenu. It is expensive for what it does. I also found a way of making a secure connection to the WU-1a adaptor via the Nikon Mobile Utility app. Now the lag in qdslr dashboard app live view is smooth and in sinc. I tried it out on my tv and it was exactly in sinc with no lag!

I am currently living in China and I can have the D7100 for a really cheap price. I am a total noob when it comes to cameras but your video really helped me. I hope to start amateur pictures with this model
