I think the likely discontinuation of the F6 speaks more to Nikon's own troubles with trying to compete with the phone market than it does to film. I'm not quite as pessimistic about it. I mean it sucks but there's still a demand for film, and that demand is increasing. There's the Reflex that's still trying to make headway and there's pretty large demand for 120 and large format. I would say the market is ripe, but not for a company like a Canon or a Nikon. They function on volume which is why phones are really making a big dent in their business - much like the Kodak of 2008, they're built on a higher volume than exists. That might seem like a disadvantage for a new company to make cameras, but I actually think that might be an advantage where companies that are able to innovate using modern small scale tooling that's available today could come up with something unique. Or maybe Nikon will realize they just have to scale back to be both a professional level niche player in the digital market and maybe the film one. Who knows. I expect hard times for Nikon and Canon but I don't think that will affect film much. The F6 was out of range for a lot of film folk already so the bulk of the market has already been in the used market and waiting on a company to decide to make a new higher end camera. I bet you it will come. The F6 may be a setback but I don't think it's the last chapter for film by any means.

@jackson pine The fact that the F6 was aimed at rich amateurs rather than professional news photographers is part of why the F6 is BETTER than the F5 for most purposes. Yes, if you need more tan 5.5 fps and want to shoot in a storm, by all means, take the F5. But if you don't (who shoots faster than 5.5 fps on film these days?), the F5's high speed capabilities (batteries!) make it way too big and heavy for a 35mm cam. The point

I, too, will mourn the passing of the F6 as there isn't really any other new film body choice; other than, as you said, Leica which is quite expensive and IMO a niche product. That said, I will happily continue using my beloved F2 and F4.

If you can buy a new high end turntable today, maybe we will see a new good film camera in the future as well? In the case of the turntables however there was a time when the historic companies stopped making them... and new companies came up (like Pro-Ject). Only many years later Technics restarted the production.... Maybe we'll see the same with photography? Fingers crossed 🙄🤞

If you look on eBay there are hundreds of second hand f6's f5's and canon Eos 1v's 1n's etc. These will last decades. It's not the end of the world. Also thousands of medium format cameras are available. You can bet your house that any digital will not last remotely as long.
@NicosPhotographyShow
@NicosPhotographyShow 3 года назад
I know its not the end of the world, I think I didnt imply that. But the loss of manufacturing power and know how is a big deal. Yeah, we have thousands of cameras, but not thousands of spare parts or mechanics. So loosing the last premium camera to me feels like more than just saying bye and taking the second hand market as the new horizon.

We should remember though, F6 wasn't aimed at pro's so much by then anyway. It was rich old guys w/ money to spend in the joy of film. The F5 was the (in my view) the last pro action sports / press film camera. and lived into the D2 days when digital was finally accepted to win the pros over, then the D3 hoked it in. Sold! As much as I do love the F6, it didn't bring enough in over an F5 at retail. Today, yes. I love i-TTL, CLS system & #D Colour Matrix and for the 1st time on film to EXIF info to file. I then used F4 for macro as it had just about everything you can need in a studio film, yet fast enough for mild action by today's standard (record breaking when new). F6 lost the so desired (TV finder) DA action sports finder or interchangeability finders for macro, street (yesterdays "liveview", best option) & ability to trim down body to compact. Most will argue the F3 does everything they need as well if only minus AF. I still use 1 as back up film.

I guess Leica and *sort of* Hasselblad produce film options, but that's so ultra premium. I kind of feel like we had to clear out the last of the old generation before we could move on. People don't realize anymore how AMAZING Nikon was in the F4-6 era. Maybe we can have some kind of small-scale advance that can help recover this market.

Hasselblad.....really just DJI....doesn’t make any film items any more. At best you could possible buy a 120 film back for the H series....but it would be old stock made 10+ years ago...just like Nikon F6. I have to give the kudos to Leica for being the only real film camera manufacturer left standing. I’m a hassy V shooter....and Hasselblad loves to cash in on the V series for their brand...but they give zero effort to support it. If you have a Leica M series.....funny but Leica still cares.....you can visit the Leica factory and the staff actually love to see an old M2. Hasselblad can’t even supply new V series dark slides anymore.....occasionally there are some old stock around. . I agree with Nicos....Hasselblad wouldn’t be able to make any film camera anymore.it would be nice if they could at least make some common spare parts for lenses and the V series to help make repairs easier - like lens springs and shutter buffers....the list would be at best 20 parts. Even sub contract making 120 film backs that were reliable and new.

Watching this video two years later, it’s funny how accurately you predicted Pentax’s film resurgence. It was really sad to see Nikon exiting the film space, especially when the F6 was such an incredible camera. I hope the new cameras that Pentax comes out with can pick up where they left off, but also integrate the best of new technology while preserving their traditional know-how and build quality. There are too many start up cameras on the market where everything is flimsy, the focusing screens are dim plastic, and you can just really tell they are working with first generation products. Pentax, hopefully, will know better.

Still a few new large format cameras being produced too, although I'm not aware of any new-manufactured large format lenses. I think a big issue with anybody trying to design and sell a new film camera these days is that there are still so many working good quality second hand cameras out there for prices that are too low to compete with when you consider that any new film camera will have extremely small production volumes (which necessarily pushes prices up). 3D printed camera bodies that use existing lens formats like Cameradactyl are one way to make it work, but they're never going to be 'high performance' cameras with all the bells and whistles, just a perfectly adequate way to expose film.

I agree the lack of E lens support does not help. I have owned My F6 for 17 years. Also own all single digit Nikon F cameras. Owned 2 wonderful F100 and regret selling both of them. That being said there is nothing better in 35mm cameras than a Nikon F6. I shot dozens of weddings without a single issue. I actually stopped wedding photography after film stocks dwindled too much. I use it now for my E6 rolls and landscape and portraits on 400H. Its easy to diss something you haven't tried because if the price. Also hope Nikon is not dying!

The only company that could come up with a "new" film SLR would be Cosina. I'm sure they still have the technology they used for so many cheap cameras (they all had the same shutter that was used in the Voigtländer Bessa R line-up and for all sorts of other models including the Nikon FM10). I would bet that *if* a Pentax branded camera appears, it will be exactly such a model made by Cosina. Not bad, a very reliable shutter, just a bit noisy (I have a Voigtländer Bessa R, and it is really noisy …). If they would just produce one model with different bayonets (and M42 screw mount), it would be great (as lenses have a much longer lifespan than camera bodies and shutters).

@hoorayforpentax3801
@hoorayforpentax3801 3 года назад
Because the Holga is new-build and the Isolette is older than their parents, with God only knows what issues and no clear idea of where to send it for servicing, or getting it serviced would be expensive. They buy the Holga to try out 120 for themselves with little risk, then if they like it they move on to something better when they are ready.

I started with my first Nikon (brand) SLR in 1961. My last 35mm SLR, bought used, was an F100. I'll join the regret of passing of the F6 as part of the great arch of 35mm SLR development, but I never owned one and never will. I don't have any use for the mass of bells and whistles loaded on it nor its weight and bulk. The termination of cameras like by F100 was far more meaningful, being a camera a significant number of the film population might actually use. If you are looking for a new model SLR to arise, hope for the shade of Miranda to appear. I started collecting them a few years ago. The one with the TTL meters don't usually meter anymore, but I've run into only one body out of many which didn't function perfectly.(omitting the ill-conceived DX models of course) - high quality construction, simple designs. That's more likely than ever seeing a "Reflex".

Hi Randall, I owned 2 F100s and they were great cameras. However if you have never tried an F6, you are really missing the point. It is about the same size as an F100 without the vertical grip. It is much smoother and much faster focusing then the F100, also has data imprinting built in. Its truly next level, but I agree for 95% of shooters the F100 is more than enough. Just my 2c.

I think IF, there would be something like mid range available, like let's say new F100 kinda camera, for under 300/400 euros it may seal deal. This is where everybody went wrong. Matrix metering? Reliance on algorithms and computers was the start of the demise of film photography. If Nikon, Canon or Olympus brought out a fully mechanical camera tomorrow with no electronics, you'd be surprised as to the number that would sell. Most of them would be sold to digital ' photographers ' who would be ready to part with good amount of money to prove that they know photography. Just look at the number of U Tube contributors who are brandishing all manner of manual film cameras like Leica, Mamiya, Hasselblad, Pentax, Nikon and even 4X5 and 8X10s around just to prove that they know what they are talking about.

Hasselblad has not lost the know how to build the V cameras, you can still buy brand new and modern digital backs with the design and the technology needed for V System cameras, you can also buy new some accessories for V system cameras like viewfinder screen with dedicated digital frames. What is no more available and lost forever are V system Zeiss lenses, leaf shutter manufacturers like Compur and Prontor no more exist, and moderne electronic Hasselblad leaf shutters would not fit in the V lenses design.

This is a sad day for photography. Nikon was my entry into both analog and digital photography, and even though I've branched into other brands and systems, I've stil always used Nikon in various forms... The F6 was never a proper F camera in my mind, but it was a good camera for what people actually need, and it was **there**. Now it probably isn't.

All this electronic stuff inside the film cameras after 1980 is obsolete in comparison to what DSLR offers. Furthermore, there are still so many good and cheap 35mm SLR out there that the suffering is quite limited.

It would be sad if Nikon actually discontinued the F6. There is not much out there in the way of film cameras as it is, and it looks like Nikon are throwing away the opportunity to keep us film camera users the option of buying a new 35mm SLR Film Camera. I know that I can never ever afford a new camera anymore, but I will be on the hunt for a Nikon F5 in near mint condition to replace my Nikon F80 after the New Year. I do have a Nikon D300 with a Nikon AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VRII Lens that I purchased new back in 2009 and it is in mint condition with only a 1700 shutter count. I do prefer the film camera more because I grew up with film.

I was reflecting (whilst making up a batch of silver gelatin emulsion) that I could recreate all of 19th Century photography in my spare room. I couldn't do early 20th Century photography though. That might take a light industrial unit and some level of professional resources. Mid 20th Century technologies and beyond require industrial scale manufacturing to even exist and are all likely to be lost at some point. The Nikon F6 is obviously in this category. Analogue photography will never die because it is fundamentally so simple but it may revert to some form of 1920s and 1930s technology. We are talking early Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange and Alfed Stieglitz so not the end of the world. Still lots of chances to be creative. It is precisely because of its ephemeral nature that I like analogue photography and I think it is why people are attracted to it at the moment. It feels real because of its physicality and the physical is always ephemeral. Look at how Instax is doing. If we are unable to enjoy something that will pass in a few years how can we enjoy being with our family and friends? How can we enjoy our own lives? It is OK to feel sad that the flowers on the table (or the F6) have died but we can never have had the joy of their existence without the sadness of their loss. I wrote a very pretentious blog post about this appeal of the analogue over the digital last year www.hyam.net/blog/archives/4013

Many comments keep hoping for a new camera but this unfortunately confirms serious demand is not really there. It is very unlikely someone could make a new film rangefinder or SLR under $1,000, maybe even impossible under $2,000. How much demand truly exists at these price points?
@Luudite
@Luudite 3 года назад
It's a problem for sure. I think a compact film camera of some sort is most likely. If we're lucky, maybe something like the Fuji rangefinders would come back. Mostly something that didn't require a system of lenses and the extra complication that would entail.

let’s be honest, a high tech, high speed film slr is just not needed anymore. Digital does high speed action better, and you can use a d850 for that. Most film guys, like myself, are making art, surrealism, landscapes etc. you don’t need high speed action functions for that.

Sad news but hardly unexpected. Of all those who mourn its passing how many would actually splash the cash and buy one? Certainly not me. If you can get six pretty near new condition F5s for less than the the cost of a new F6 and throw each away if they need repair and still be better off why bother? There are simply too many great film cameras available used - there is no realistic market for a high volume high spec and high priced new one.

I have a Canon 1V and it is sexual in how good it is, but it is a temperamental menu system. F6 was always on my want list, I was always a Canon fanboy but... This always was in the back of my mind that, just maybe, Nikon could be the best film camera ever made. This really hurts compadres. Pentax? You listening?

Reopening a production line is not cheap. The K1000 was manufactured FOR EVER and is the most logical choice, but the assembly line was last seen in Hong Kong so that is now the property of the Chinese. Unless they have stored production facilities for another of the film bodies that could be brought back into action relatively quickly, it wouldn't be worth the cost to set it up. Pentax are a niche company, even with the entirety of Ricoh Corporation behind them, and they aren't exactly rolling in money for a gamble like this.

@@NicosPhotographyShow I hope you have something more than vague wish-fulfillment rumours. If (for example) Pentax located and brought back into service the K1000 assembly line that was last known to be operating out of Hong Kong, they could pick up the growing niche film market. There are probably hundreds of thousands of lenses out there that could go straight on, and two of them (FA 50/1.4, FA 35/2.0) are still being made new. Hell, the FA35 was recently REINTRODUCED, with its aperture ring and new coatings. Why leave the aperture ring on, when they could have just made it full-auto? Was it a hint that they are planning something? Ironically, the Pentax K and M series bodies now sell for more than the late model AF ones!

It goes without saying that we Pentaxians would like nothing more than for even one of the film bodies to be brought back for a limited run. The futile digital war between Nikon, Sony, Canon etc etc will be the end of photography one day. Nikon is a camera manufacturer, an optical instruments manufacturer and has been since its inception. It can never compete with electronic giants such as Sony, Panasonic or even Fuji which was actually a chemical company. We do not need all this digital stuff. We do not need cameras with 50+ mega pixel on a 35mm sensor, we do not need three dozen focus modes, we do not need two hundred plus phase detect focus points. We do not need cameras with digital iso in the 100000s. We do not need 8K video on a still camera. We do not need zoom lenses that resemble an astronomical telescope and weight just as much. I only wish that Nikon and Leica of all people can survive this pointless rat race in digital technology. I gave up on Hasselblad a long time ago.
