I use a Nikon 60mm 2.8 D lens for macro and to digitize film slides (marvelous for this task).

I have Nikkor 40mm Micro with D7200. It is the sharpest lens I have, and it's details are really awesome. But you have to be close to the object, cause 60mm in DX isn't so good for longer distance... For snakes or spiders photos it's not so good :D

The Nikon 105 has issues with the VR crapping out. The 100 Tokina is phenomenal.

Longer is better 😉! But what kind of macro and what's your budget. The Tokina was ok but the build quality sucks IMO. The 60mm D is an excellent lens for macro and portraits; not the fastest AF but you really don't need it for most macro. The 60G and 105G are good,faster AF and sharper, but I like the colors from the D much better. Honestly, using an extension tube on a non-macro lens works very well and you get to keep AF for moving subjects. I'm still trying to find a 200 f4 to play with but that lens is 1800 which is more than I am willing to spend on a macro.

I have two Tamrons the 180mm and the 90mm, both have its uses. Longer focal lengths like the 180mm are better for skitty insects, but the 90mm have better build, focus faster, faster glass and weather sealed. So, it depends on what you need it for and why.

OWned both the Nikon 40mm 2.8 and 60mm 2.8G, both great, if money isn't an issue then get the 60mm, if you on tioght budget then nothing wrong with the 40mm but remember the 40mm is a DX lens and should be used on DX body.

thanks matt for your advice...i have nikon d5300...as per your advice i bought longer focal length macro...i bought tamron 90mm macro.....i really wanted tokina 100mm but the autofocus doesn't work in dx camera...so very very thanks....tokina 100 mm has been compared to nikon 105mm with better result in some instances...with less than half price of nikon(896 dollars) and tokina (349 dollars)

I'd be inclined to suggest 90mm+ for good macro work. Anything shorter and you'll be right on top of your subject. This not only scares tiny critters but blocks your light too. If you are a DX shooter 60mm macro Nikkor would be great both for its macro but also as a portrait lens. For the money it's hard to beat a second hand Tamron 90mm macro f2.8 however :-D

Hey Matt! I'm a beginner photographer, and I'm interested in purchasing my first DSLR for live music photography. Video isn't really my thing, but the option would be nice nice to have. What body/lenses would you recommend? Love the content btw! Keep up the good work! -Stephan

Stephan Kuehne find yourself a d700, you can get one for about 700 dollars. Best camera ever made in the history of cameras outside the d3s. Cheers

I have an older Nikon D200 and I am looking for a dedicated macro lens. Right now I am using a set of extension rings with my lenses to shoot macro photographs. So that being said what kind of lens would you say that I should buy?

My question is what would be the best macro for my Nikon D3300 body? I do insects and birds.

Tokina 100mm 2.8 is awesome, its screw drive af but that only matters if you dont have an in camera focus motor

I had a Tokina 100mm with a camera with a focusing motor, but the grinding bothered me so I sold it to get a 90mm Tamron with a built-in motor.

It you're shooting small living insects, go with the 85mm. If it's still shots or flowers, the 40mm lens is fine. the 85mm lens is a lot, but they usually have the 85mm + the 35mm lens bundle for less than just the 85mm lens.

What do you think about using 40mm to do product photography of fine jewelry?
@dubisirie2
@dubisirie2 6 лет назад
Toadally Awesome Photography -- I think you're confusing the two 85mm micro lenses that Nikon has. There is an 85 f2.8 made for FX bodies which is near $2000 and There is an 85 f3.5 made for DX bodies which is around $530. The version included in the bundle is the cheaper f3.5. Did you really think they would offer up a $2000 lens plus a free 35mm lens for a little over $800? C'mon man

hi. I have Nikon D5300+ 18-140 +35 I am going to buy new lens mainly for portrait. confused with nikon 85mm 1.8G + 50 mm 1.4 +60mm 2.8 what do you suggest?
@mohans2k

Sebin Simon 50 mm 1.8 on a crop body D5300 will yield awesome results, I have been using this amazing piece of art (50mm f1.8G) for more than 2 years now and still couldn’t go away from it.. It’s a Marvelous glass by Nikon.. You can go for 85mm f1.8 when u upgrade to full frame camera because 85mm in FX body is equivalent to 50mm in crop body.. there is no difference.. D5300 is a decent good camera and 50mm will make a perfect partner with it.. If budget allows, then along with 50mm get 40mm f2.8 for both micro and portrait, it gives great great great output.. No second thoughts required.. saying it from my experience..enjoy..👍🏻

We use the Nikon 60mm 2.8 often. Very sharp. For macro you will need to use a tripod as the focusing can get out of focus easily. We use the digital zoom focusing feature to nail the focusing area. You can also get a similar macro image with a 50mm lens combined with a +1 close-up filter. Comparing images from both setups yields almost identical images.

I have collected the 40, 60 and 85 over time (all from eBay auctions) and love ALL of them. If you are on APS-C, like the D500, then each and every one of them can do double duty as a portrait lens. Wow, hard to even pick a favorite. If you are truly going for pure macro work (and not just trying to sneak yet ANOTHER portrait lens past your wife disguised as a "close-up flower" lens) then the old adage of "longer is better" is time-honored for a reason. It will get you a little farther from skittish critters and also potentially casting shadows on your subject. They are all great, so go for a good deal and you'll be happy in the end with any of them.
