Thank you for showing off the 85mm at its best. There’s a few other preview vids on RU-vid this morning, and in each of the others the samples did not feel all that special. The compositions and in several cases the white balance choices left me with more questions than answers. But Seth, you’ve cleared up all my concerns. Beautiful work, and now I’m not concerned my preorder will feel like a waste. One question, I know you’ve shot GFX some. How does this Z 85mm 1.2 compare with the GF 110mm-in terms of that creamy falloff and the overall image quality and “feel”? That system was too slow for my needs and I let it go, but I’m wondering if Nikon will put the 110mm out of my mind for good.
@LastXwitness
@LastXwitness Год назад
It’s honestly a different feeling lens. The 110 combined with the gfx system look and fuji tones is a different feel not better or worse. That’s all subjective. I do think the nikon let’s me step in just a bit closer as well. That said. It’s more about what you like and want to see happen. There’s no winner there and I’ll gladly be using both on the future as I own the 110 for GFX100s and I need to pick this 85 up eventually
@waveland
@waveland Год назад
@@LastXwitness It will be interesting to get a look for myself. I do mostly film and video work (non-hybrid shooting) so can’t justify running both a Z kit and a GFX kit for stills. Hopefully the 85mm will come close.

@richpaul8132 Год назад
Excellent review, (as I think all your reviews are, IMO)! But frankly, I already have the Nikkor 85mm F1.4G/F-Mount. In fact, it’s definitely one of my favorite lenses. Every photographer should have an 85mm lens. Yes, I realize my 85mm F1.4G/F-Mount lens doesn’t have an 11-blade diaphragm, and requires the FTZ adapter, but my older F1.4G version has a very comparable 9-Blade diaphragm, (and offers a great Bokeh), and is also incredibly fast (and quite), at focusing. I use it on my D4S and my Z7-II with equal frequency, but even though the D4S can shoot 4K HD video, it can't come close to the Z7-II's video capabilities and options. The 85mm handles the video side of the Z7-II incredibly well. That said, I'm a still-life photographer and not so much into videography, but either one of the 85mm lenses are as great for video as they are for still-life! All I'm saying here is that I probably wouldn't buy the 85mm F1.2/Z-Mount at this point because I couldn't justify the expense. However, let me play 'the devil's advocate' for a minute: Nikkor already has an 85mm F1.8S/Z-mount lens, which is 3.5 times less expensive than the F1.2S version. The F1.8S Z version also has 9 diaphragm Blades, but again, can one really justify spending $2800.00 USD for two more blades and an additional f.6 of aperture opening in a lens that already has an aperture size far larger than 2.8? I don't know... And keep in mind that the 85mm F1.4G/F-mount is an available lens that costs about $1600.00 new (about $1200 less than the F1.2S/Z-Mount), and about $900.00 used, (but in excellent condition). OK, so I aimed at the 'money side' of the argument, which is always an easy target. However, from a technical comparison & POV, I would eliminate the Nikkor 85mm F1.8S/Z-Mount, and focus on the 85mm F1.2S/Z and the 85mm F1.4G/F. Surprisingly, of the two, the 85mm F1.4G F, weighs considerably LESS! The 85mm F1.4S Z-mount lens weighs 2.56 pounds and the 85mm F1.4G F mount weighs under 1.5 pounds! Even when you add the FTZ adapter to the weight of the 85mm F1.4G F-mount version, it certainly won't increase the combined weight of the two by another pound. So here you have the older 85mm F1.4G/F-mount (9-blade Diaphragm), plus the FTZ adapter with a combined weight of about 1.7 pounds, and costs $1200 less than the 85mm F1.2S/Z-Mount, (11-blade diaphragm), which doesn't need the adapter, but weighs 2.56 pounds, and of course, costs nearly twice as much… What does the 85mm F1.2S/Z-mount lens have on the ‘up-side’? Well, it likely comes down to the ‘possible’ future firmware upgrades, (not sure if that amounts to much). Also, the F1.2S has 11 Lens elements and 10 groups, (the F1.4G has 10 elements and 9 groups). Let’s not forget that the F1.2S version has an F.2 larger aperture, which you demonstrated very well in the video. My point is that Nikkor seems to be reinventing the wheel on this one and then over charging for it. Seriously, the 85mm F1.2S Z-Mount is a great lens but even to a professional photographer, is it really that much better than the F1.4G F-mount version to justify the price? I guess if I was a pro-photographer, I would probably prefer not to carry an adapter for any of my lenses. But in the real world, most photographers (including the pros), that owned F-Mount lenses didn’t sell all of them when they bought one of the Nikon Z-mount, mirrorless camera bodies. When you consider that the cost of prime glass is always a concern, I think Nikkor should have taken a closer look at the 85mm lenses they already had on the market and asked themselves if they really needed a repeat of an already top-of-the-line 85mm in the F1.4G/F-mount. It just seemed like they should have looked at their MSRP for this lens and gave it more consideration when they already had one out there for well under $2000 USD. I have a feeling that their 85mm F1.2S/Z-Mount lens will be seeing some great discount prices in the near future. I predict that eventually, the price for this lens will settle to a more reasonable $1800/$2000 area. I think if they do that sooner than later, they’ll sell more of them and ultimately, recover the R&D expenses. If, however, they wait too long, well… FWIW, Thanks again for a great review! Rich
@LastXwitness
@LastXwitness Год назад
I’ll be honest I didn’t read all of this. But 1. You’re forgetting the massive amount of video shooters (still growing market) who need QUIET and no focus breathing.. which I went over in this video. 2. The lens isn’t for everyone but native glass in z mount also allows not jsut for firmware but things like linear focusing ability as well as more integration with AF upgrades for future technology. 3. 1.8 is not this 1.2.. I feel 1.4 would be a great space for nikon to leave open for third party lenses to fill that gap as an option and not be direct competition. 4. Youre dreaming a little on a price “settling”. There will be rebates maybe like all brands do but this isn’t a body where the specs dramatically change as generations Canons has been out for years and has only seen a sale here and there for a couple hundred off. I feel most people don’t understand how much goes into lenses like this cost wise let alone R&D . That all said sounds like you’re happy with what you have going so that’s all that matter really. I will also say the focusing speed of this lens is significantly faster than the f mount 1.4. Maybe check out Ricci vid comparing the 1.8 and that 1.4

You know you're a photographer when you look at a portrait of a beautiful woman and you say "Damn, that's some beautiful bokeh"

People spend more on a lens to see less in focus it’s part of the irony of our game 🤪😂

Nikon actually made a rangefinder reproduction in 2005, the Nikon SP, sold only in Japan. It was a 50 year anniversary. They had no tooling so were starting from scratch. They had to bring old retired guys back to help with assembly. It ended up costing them a fortune. They could only assemble one camera per day. They made 2,500. See Japan Vintage Camera channel for the unboxing and the story behind one of those reproductions. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nmh1g7ExrI4.html
