how crazy .... i needed this video years ago. i hated flash photography my entire life but i know fill light is essential in great photography. i basically put my camera down for over 3 years after flooding back in 2016. about to have my first grandbaby and getting caught up on all my skills. glad i found this video.

Hey Gary thank you so much for these videos! I ordered your Lightsphere off of Amazon and LOVE IT! Great product! I also have a set of triggers from Neewer and their 660III Speedlite. I cannot get the HSS on my Nikon D7100 to trigger using the remote and I don't think I've ever been more frustrated! I know it has to be something simple, but I'm about to smash this thing to pieces! lol

The CLS works wonders. I wonder now if they ever thought of doing a built in radio transmitter. There are some short comings in the CLS. You have to face the sensor to the camera unless it can bounce off a wall and the pop up flash does flash blinding the model but that I solved by buying an adapter Nikon sells. Not perfect but works.
Helpful. I guess you could use the on camera flash as a fill in rather than having it set to off, assuming you wanted some fill. You could set it to -1 or -2 or greater to underexpose so as not to take over from your 'main' light. Thank you for this.

Hi everybody... How is the information sent from camera to speedlight? I know that the popup flash triggers the speedlight to fire, but what about zoom, and exposure compensation etc when using TTL. When you change the EV in commander mode for different flash groups, how is that transmitted to the speedlights? Radio? Infrared? etc
Unless you're using a flash unit and triggering system that specifically states it is radio frequency enabled, then the default is going to be a hybrid of infrared or line-of-sight technology. The pop-up flash on some cameras can send the signal for exposure compensation and zoom, but not all do. You'll need to confirm by searching the attributes of the camera you own and the flash unit(s) you're using.
Nice video. I just got the D780, which does not have a built-in flash. Do I need to get the SU-800 Commander to replace the non-existent built-in flash, or are there other (cheaper) alternatives?
Hi guys these are optical or radio. Guess if it is optical it won't work well outdoors. and can i make it a radio by adding a trigger radio on the hot shoe?
@@thehashslingingslasher7017 the d3200 is a begginer camera and it does not support CLS. Therefore it Dosent have a commander mode. If u want to use flash off camera, u need to buy either radio triggers or optical triggers.
Hi Gary just wondering if you can help me out? I have done everything you said with my Nikon D7100 and my SB-910 but my camera's built in flash still goes off as well as the off camera SB-910. Do you have any ideas how I can make sure the built in cameras flash does not go off? if I close the pop up flash then the off camera one doesn't go off either :(
I have the d5500 and the Shanny SN600SC speedlight. i'm only trying to use it on the camera instead of the pop upNot trying to use it off camera yet. It gives me no options except built in ttl auto and manual when i go to camera settings-custom settings-bracket/flash. When i take a picture the flash flashes on every picture with full flash power. it seems the camera is not making any choices to flash or not flash and at what power regardless of whether the camera is in manual, auto or program modes. what am i doing wrong or does this speedlight not work with the d5500

If you're referring to the flash itself, it depends on which flash unit you are using. Some flash units retain the information while others will completely reset.
well I will try it and I already have and my flash puts out the same harshness no matter what setting I use. Or do I keep it on remote without changing the power

If the camera itself doesn't have that as a MENU option, then no- I'm afraid not. You could usually a secondary option like a PocketWizard and receivers, but nothing built-in.
+INside Store In order for those cameras that don't have a commander mode for your pop up flash, you need to use a dedicated speedlight, such as an sb700, and program that flash as your commander the same way you would as the pop up flash. those settings are on the flash itself, but work the same way.
