The New version 1.10 for the FTZ adapter has been a blessing,all my F mount lens are focusing way better with the new Update and have not loose much of the camera sharpness as well too.Especially my Nikon 400mm f2.8G VRII it was searching to focus on the object that it was slow to find,now with the new v1.10 release from Nikon has really help with the performance and all my F mounts lens are on par in focus and sharpness.

Yes but you can see half.Look at the bokeh!!!Look at price.The sharpness superiority is only at low apertures.Don’t get me wrong new lenses are better but they lack the 1.4 aperture and the character.If 1.4-1.2 glass was available I would have jump to the mirror less.As a professional photographer I am still thinking to spent on the old lenses!!!!

Many thanks for this comparison - good to know that the FTZ adapter is performing great and it really looks like there is almost no adapter being used ;-) Many compliments to Nikon engineers !!! However - and this is now also a crisp & clear result of this video: the picture quality of Z mount lens is way better than the F-mount lens - even when stopped down to 1,8. That's amazing to see in direct split screen comparison !!! So bottom line for me - I will keep and use my 1,8 35mm, 50mm and 85mm F-Mount lenses with the adapter on my Z6 - but I am keen to wait for the (hopefully coming soon) 50 mm 1,2 Z Mount lens. And I will monitor special sales for any Z mount primes in next years .... Krgds from Germany

I found no problems using the FTZ and G lenses for stills. Even my AF-S 400mm 2.8 D focuses just as well as on my D850. The problem arises when trying to use the FTZ G lenses for video. The native S (Z) lenses are superb for video compared to FTZ adapted lenses. I won't use the FTZ for videos since it's common for the lens to hunt.Your video disputes my findings. so I may try again. That S lens is markedly sharper than the G lens but that may be Nikons faulty 50mm G. Thanks for the video Peter.
@catalin-ap
@catalin-ap 4 года назад
It might be a speed difference, as Mr. Peter Gregg is moving relatively slow in the scene, and the camera + lens (w/ or w/o adapter) combos take their time to change focus smoothly. The 50mm 1.4 G, for instance, focuses quite slow. The 24-70 2.8 G (without VR) focuses fast. But they are both noisy for video, and use an older type of motor, that is not as smooth. In an action or fast-paced situation, it might be a significant difference between Z and F mount lenses. And the Z ones have silent, smooth and faster autofocusing, making a big difference in video.

I have to say that I respect the heck out of you for giving the Nikon's a fair shot. I have gently teased you in the past about the brands and so on, but to be honest I genuinely believe that everyone has their own personal photography journey and that may take them in many different walks of life, gear, and or brands. In the end if it inspires you then I say by all means. I shoot Nikon and want them to stick around for a while longer and so I definitely try and get the word out, but they're all pretty good nowadays. But I just wanted to say that I recall your friend taking his own life was a Nikon guy and I know that he's very proud of you Peter. Not to get all sappy but I just thought I would tell you that. Not certain if you're gonna read this but I wanted to say it anyway. Cheers on wherever the journey takes you on the rest of your photographic life!

If the focusing works as good as demonstrated than this camera is better than the Sony A7III. I do not consider one card slot to be that big of a disadvantage. Indeed, the touchscreen and Nikon ergonomics put this camera ahead.

I was looking at the videos again, and looks like the skin tones are much better using the native Z lens, with the new firmware C. Take a look for yourself. The colors are brighter, and image is sharper wit the Z lens. Maybe the new 50mm f1.8 Z lens is just a better lens.
@lamwp8634
@lamwp8634 3 года назад
Image sharpness depends not only on the lens design, but other factor such Sharpening on a scale 0-9 in the Shooting Menu - Set Picture Control. The same applies to colour saturation - Standard or Neutral or Vivid - Brightness + 0 -. Lastly, the image processor turns out images based on your input or the way you want them to look. All these from my D3 experience. I have to repeat what my photography mentors have been telling me - photographs are highly subjective - some photographers want more red skin tone while some, less red skin tone.

@PeterGregg
@PeterGregg 3 года назад
The adapter has no moving parts, it passes the electrical commands to the lens. The noise you hear are the older motors of the focus drive in the lens. They move fast and often making quite the clatter. A new z lens would be almost silent if not totally silent. Your 70-200 should make the same noises on a mount of an older camera that focuses for video. Video focus is very demanding on a lens and I know my 50mm G lens never shuts up lol. Welcome to video done with older lens mounts :)

Nikon has always made great lenses, and it works okay but no offense but you need to move a lot faster to compare the autofocus to native lenses in the best mirrorless cameras. If you can track a dog running full out across a varied terrain than I'll concede it's comparable. But that test needs to be tougher.

@PeterGregg
@PeterGregg 3 года назад
Yes, IMHO it is sharper. But before you cheer, sharper does not always mean better. For example, for landscape sharper IS better. But for faces, sharper is not better. That is why so many hold dear to the Canon 50mm L 1.2 lens. It's NOT sharper, but creamier and people love it for that reason. In my current videos I am using the Z6 with the FTZ and the 50mm 1.4 G lens. That is definitely NOT the sharpest lens in the book, but very very pleasing. The counter argument is - you can always reduce sharpness but can't ADD sharpness (legitimately). So, yup, the Z mounts are sharper :)

AnyFlowsGoes Hi - when using any lens that will mount on the adapter it goes like this: the adapter mounts to the camera and locks in place and has it regular latch to remove it. It becomes an extension of the mount that is built into your camera. The adapter has it own mount where you mount and unmount lenses with a release just like the camera body has. It is your choice the sequence you use to put lenses on and take lenses off. Some people unmount the whole set of lens-adapter. I just mount and unmount the lens and don't bother removing the adapter from the camera body because all my lenses are the older style so the adapter has no reason to come off for me. I am interested in the new 50mm coming out, so to use that specific lens the adapter needs to be removed because that lens needs the camera mount directly, but that lens isn't available yet so no need to remove the adapter. Hope that helps.

Thats what I thought and was hoping for. All of the videos I've watched always show the adapter being attached to the lens first and then adapter to the body. So I'm glad to hear the adapter does not have to be removed. I to am vested in Nikon lenses, I sold my old D800 and purchased the A7r3. Hopefully tomorrow it will be sold only after 2 weeks of use, just can't do it for several reasons so I'm looking forward to a z7 and using all my Nikon glass. I'm 3 hours NW of you, stay safe this hurricane season, we have another one headed our way..

Is there a setting I need to change on my z7ii after I mount? What does it mean to set to f/1.8
@PeterGregg
@PeterGregg 3 года назад
Hi - I have no idea on your question, I mount and go. If you are using a manual lens rather than a Nikon lens that is automatic you probably need to read the instructions on how to calibrate it. I don't have any of the older or other brand manual lenses./

Hey, Peter, can I email you since your website is down? Magic Lantern software for Canon 5D mk 2 or 3 are interesting creating HDR, 5.6k recording and Raw output for $500. I have a video link to send you and I thought it could be a budget solution for someone with a bit of tech savvy. I messed with magic lantern sw when I had a 5D mk 2 myself.

Maybe the colors and pattern on your shirt are used to keep focus after you turn away. Try a grey shirt with no pattern.

Another enjoyable video, thank you. Does anyone know how this adapter manages with third party nikon mount lenses, tamron, sigmas ??
@SouthernExposure
@SouthernExposure 4 года назад
I've used the Tamron 70-200 G2 and the Sigma 150-600c adapted to the Z6 with great results, mostly for stills. Some Tamron lenses require a firmware update, but it's really simple with the tap-in console.

Well done Peter. Currently shooting with the D850 which I love but looking forward to the next pro level mirrorless Z body from Nikon. Leery of the adaptors in general but this provides enough evidence that Nikon has done their engineering homework. Not a big video fan so curious how you find the adaptor for general photography? With lots of fast Nikkor F glass I have to ask. Thanks for sharing. Ciao.

Also not a big fan of video and use my cameras for stills 99% of the time. Using the adapter has just as fast focusing or faster with my f mount lens than on my DSLR's, was worried would also need to upgrade my lens to Z mount but found that was not the case.

I don't understand why anyone expects an adapter to have any effect on AF at all. It's just a pass-through (electronically) spacer to keep the lens, the same distance from the sensor as it would be on a DSLR. The Canon adapter has zero impact on Canon AF. The lenses themselves are the question mark. A slow focusing lens on a DSLR might actually focus a little quicker on the Z6, but certainly shouldn't be slower. The only adapters affecting AF are those bringing a non-native lens to the camera (e.g. mounting a Canon lens onto a Nikon body, which the lens was never designed to work with). All the Sony AF issues with adapters were adapting non-native lenses to Sony bodies.

Wow, not much in it for the comparison, eh? A little touch-up on the "F-mount" side using current (2022) "AI" software and you really wouldn't care about the differences (well, besides pixel peeping).

It surprises me when reviews are done only for focus. I have done many tests in parallel with the D750 VS Z6 with many wide angle lenses and they all showed poor image quality in the corners compared to the DSLR. With an adapter, the image is the same only in the center or with a telephoto lens. I sent tests to Nikon and they admitted, but they did not correct the false information on their website.

I have a Nikon D750 with a Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 G2 lens, I'm thinking about upgrading to a mirrorless camera, in this case the Nikon Z6 II. I've seen several videos that say we have to update the lenses, with TAP-in Console. Did you do that? If I buy the Nikon Z6 II (body only) and put the Tamron in, will it work well for both video and photo? Will I have compatibility issues? will it work at 100% with a good auto focus?

I’m watching the software “hacks” coming for many older DSLRs that make them almost “new” adding features.

@PeterGregg

No Daniel, it stays full frame. Actually there is no glass in it. It is a spacer to put the lens at the correct distance to the sensor. If you notice all the new lenses for mirrorless seems to have a little extra "tube" built into them, so the cameras can be claimed to be smaller :)

I don't like the video because he only focuses on the Ai of the Focus, but using 2 different lenses 1.8 and 1.4. As everyone can see the lens without adapter is more sharper and pick up the colors better ! So now go figure, is it because he is using a 1.4 lens but setting it to 1.8, or because of the adapter or are the new lenses for the Z mount are just sharper and pick up the colors better, maybe he can give an explanation instead just focusing on the focus :(
@PeterGregg
@PeterGregg Год назад
Ha ha - I get your point but you want something other than what I was showing you :) The point was the adapter works seamless, you want to see resolution :) There is NO GLASS in the adapter, either it focuses or it doesn't, you can't be a little pregnant. It was a plus to use 2 different lenses because you got to see if one lens would fail over another lens. Sorry you were disappointed, but in truth I would do it this way all over again. I want to see if the adapter focused fast and accurate, I was here and you were not so i can say it did focus, actually better than I expect an adapter to do. Not about len comparison, about focus ability.
@miller1520

Well, if the adapter works or not, you'll end up with a camera that looks like it was designed and produced in an Albanian toy factory. I think it looks perfectly ridiculous. The selection of F mount lens is huge, while the Z mount lenses are generally uninteresting and few in number. They also look cheap. And this is the way that we 'solve' this? McGyver would be so proud.

You are right in your technical observations but so wrong in your conclusions. They equaled each other and showed no difference in focus ability which is huge news to the guys that already own some of the G lenses, in fact it is awesome news! If the testing failed, you could have pointed out what you said, but it did not fail so the result is a positive for many many people. What you did fail to notice, and you should watch it again, is there is a noticeable difference in quality of sharpness, with one lens being visibly sharper than the other. I think that would matter to a lot of people and I also found that part interesting, how about you?
