I feel the same as you. I've been using the D750 since it was announced... I got the D750 the first week it came out and remember using it before Lightroom supported the D750's raw files. I bought the D750 as a backup to my D800, but the D750 just performed so well that I ended up using the D800 as a backup, and eventually selling the D800. I preordered the Z6, and it was OK... but the Z6ii seemed to answer all the nagging issues I was having with the Z6. So I sold the Z6 and preordered the Z6ii. Man... the second I got my hands on the Z6ii I knew this would be my main camera for many years to come. I shot a wedding his past weekend with the Z6ii as my main camera and the D750 as my backup/2nd camera. Every time I used the D750 I was missing that eye AF from the Z6ii. As much as I love the D750, it's now hard to go back to it. Also, the S-line of lenses are just simply amazing. I've always been a prime guy, but recently sold all but one of my primes and got the 24-70 2.8 S lens. Even saying that I sold my primes for a 24-70 2.8 sounds like blasphemy because in the past my least favorite lens would be a 24-70. But man, the sharpness, color, and contrast that comes out of the z-mount 24-70 2.8 is better (in my opinion) than my g-primes from Nikon, it's not even close. It's bonkers to me that Canon/Fuji/Sony get most of the attention online and Nikon is often overlooked. While there is no bad camera nowadays, IMO Nikon bodies, and especially their lenses, are on top.

Totally agree on the quality of Nikon Z lenses. Primes and zoomes are practically equally sharp - and noticably sharper than F lenses. Also comparing systems against other brands... I think that Nikon has the must soul, if you know what I mean. The design, comfort and trust in knowing you are getting great quality files. Nikon is for photografers :) I think it reflex in how Nikon shooters talk about their camera and lenses - there is a connection to your gear. Sony is just techical equipment - just a tool. Roughly speaking.

I'm really pleasantly surprised by your 24-70 comment. I have the same setup as you had d750+d800. I'm planning to sell the 800 for z6ii. I shoot with prime too and 24-70 is my least used least fav lens. You're making me rethink!

Fantastic reply. Found a second-hand Z6ii with 24-70, and I have my trusty 28-300. I use it for travel. Took it to NY recently, and WOW - what a device. It makes the excellent D750 seem like an older machine. I wouldn't say I like that because I was loyal to the D750. It really hit the sweet spot for me. The size, the handling and everything was just perfect for me. However, the Z6ii is fantastic. The adaptor for the lenses does add some bulk, but it just makes it similar to what the D750 used to be. that AF is just on another level and have the points all over the frame is something else. I thought the OVF would be something I missed but not at all. The Z6ii is just an excellent camera.

I recently picked up the z6ii for portrait photography and have done a couple of shoots so far but the results have been lackluster. I’d like to know if you could let me know what I’m doing wrong. For these past couple of shoots, I used strobes and what I’m noticing is that when I focus around the eye area using the single point AF or even the auto-AF people, the focus tends to be soft in the intended facial area but might focus on the chin or something. Any idea why this may be?

You know the d750 has face detect in auto AF. Pretty sure it focuses on the eyes area and if no faces then its the closest subject. Plus once it acquires focus and you move or the subject moves it follows like its 3D tracker mode. Pretty good. I bought a Z7ii and I wish they gave you the option from the d850 and d500 to use another focus button with a different focus mode, so you can use auto/tracking on one then single on another. And why can't tracking be activated in any AF mode!!!

Nikon has patented a 100mm f/1.4 Z-mount lens so we may see one in the not too distant future. Fair warning: The sharpness of the Z-mount primes makes my F-mount lenses look like kit lenses, whether zooms or primes...I'm both happy and sad to say. If you should do any side-by-side testing in the future, you may end up wanting the Z-mount lenses...

I couldn't finish watching you entire video because I felt compelled to add my two cents. I own 2 D750's and one of my main reasons for purchasing the Z6II was for video. I wasn't even thinking about using it for photography. Like you, I absolutely love my D750's and the images they produce. However after shooting with the Z6II I'm having trouble putting it down. I love the Z6II so much and so pleased with the auto focus that I'm actually considering selling one of my D750's and purchasing another Z6II. Its a phenomenal camera. I have to tell you that I'm so tempted to rent a Z7II, to see if its in the cards down the road.

The Z6ii will be a future purchase. But having all F mount glass and the lack of Z mount lenses and 3rd party lenses without adapters etc is a turn off. I don't feel comfortable using a heavy Sigma art lenses or 70-200mm with a tiny adapter in between. I'm waiting for the 'next' generation. I don't shoot video.

@@aniaonopiuk3784 I have z6 and d750 and looking at a7iv because the focus is superior to either Nikon. If you have models who stand still great either Nikon. However wildlife or my 6yr old who will not stay still long enough usually for eye focus to lock on the a7 Iv is looking really tempting. The problem at the moment with the Z series are 2 fold the focus and the cost of z lens with no real 3rd party lenses. If sigma and Tamron pull their finger out it will massively help the Z series. The ftz adapter is good but the autofocus is inferior to Z glass and it’s already on top he back foot compared to Sony or Canon R6

Somehow - what I wrote got cut off - I was saying you might want to use the record video button in photography mode as a short cut to setting your AF modes instead of using the i menu - it is much faster to do it this way and you can even keep your eye to the viewfinder :)
@MikeMcGeePhotography
@MikeMcGeePhotography 3 года назад
You know, I like this idea. I mapped the record button to a dedicated White Balance button, but since you need to only address the white balance before you start a shoot typically, I like your idea of remapping the record button for the AF modes since this can change frequently during a shoot. Great tip man, thanks.

@@MikeMcGeePhotography Mike - you can also switch the front and rear dials to reverse the default function when moving the AF modes (i.e. use the front dial for switching between AF-S and AF-C and use the rear dial to switch from single point to Auto Area etc. - the default is the other way around and I find switching these more useful as you don't typically switch the AF-S and AF-C as often as your do the modes). @@MikeMcGeePhotography - I only shoot raw and the WB number is just a number in the raw file's metadata. It tells Lr or C1 how to open your file. My reasoning is, why let the camera apply some AI between my firing the shutter and it taking the shot, as this could only increase latency and I might get tonal differences between individual shots in a sequence. I apply the same reasoning to Auto-ISO (never use it) and to auto exposure (rarely use it). However with "expose for the highlights" instead of matrix metering, auto exposure becomes a different story as long as a series of shots shares the same peak highlight (the downside being that your shots look some 2 EV under-exposed and you need to lower the "white point" in Lr in order to get a very good image. In C1, the exposure correction engine is messed up and white point adjustment does not work the way it should).
@MikeMcGeePhotography
@MikeMcGeePhotography 3 года назад
@@jpdj2715 Yup, I completely understand what your'e saying, and I only shoot RAW as well. However, for me, I often do a variety of shots both in-studio and outdoors, and frequently change the white balance simply because I need to do soft proofing for clients to show them progress shots. If th WB is totally off, it will affect the look of the preview images. Especially with my DIY ring light that I built, those bulbs give off a severe yellow hue, so I have a custom white balance that looks great on the back of the camera if I want to show a client progress shots along the way. Same holds true for outdoor shots where I will often have clients book session with some in-studio headshots, and outdoor looks with natural light, and thus, I like to give clients previews of great shots even off the back of the camera, etc. So this means adjusting WB on-the-fly, but I totally get what you mean when it's no issue at all to import them into Lightroom, and then just adjust the WB for one and Sync the WB for the rest, etc. And if you have an incorrect WB setting and shoot RAW, there's no real issue at all. But my WB setting is more for clients viewing previews than anything else. Hope that makes sense.

Hey there, thanks for your message. I've found absolutely nothing lacking on the AF system of the Z6ii. It continues to impress me. Honestly. Yes, it works equally well in portrait mode, and I have a battery grip and typically shoot this way. The landscape mode is just easier to display for RU-vid videos. My biggest gripe of the Z6ii would be that I wish it simply had two SD card slots. I shoot video to SD cards too, and there's no issue whatsoever. SD cards are cheaper and more widely available. That said, unlike the original Z6 only having one slot, I like the two slot option, so those who want to gamble can simply stick with the single SD card only and live like the Z6, but I wouldn't recommend this, and have my other card slot set to mirror all still images when taken (backup). With the impressive AF of the Z6ii, I also shoot much faster in continuous mode. I previously had a 64GB card, and there were shoots were I actually filled up an entire card on one shoot (approx 2200 shots in raw only) so I upgraded to 128GB cards. Hope this info helps you!

Mike, - on the subject tracking hitting the OK button is not convenient or ergonomic - this is another mode that you will want to use Function buttons for - I use the F2 button for this and the function button on my vertical grip for when I shoot in portrait orientation. Some people map this to F1 - I don't because I like F1 to be my image preview so I can review images while keeping my eye to the viewfinder - in this way the client never knows that I am 'chimping' as my eye remains to the viewfinder - much better for keeping the flow of a shoot. Then when I am in Auto Area AF with Eye Detect, as soon as there is a problem where the camera is not detecting the eye for any reason, I simply push F2 and get the subject tracking box and can continue on without a hitch, If you haven't mapped these function buttons yet you will want to do this.
@MikeMcGeePhotography
@MikeMcGeePhotography 3 года назад
Yup, good info, Baron. I think what's even worse than the OK button to engage Subject Tracking is the Magnifying Glass icon to cancel subject tracking. That's one that's nearly impossible to find off the back of the camera with your eye in the viewfinder, at least, it sure is for me.

I have a question, I always have a hard time seeing the back of the screen in sunny conditions. So I tend to use my viewfinder on my cameras when shooting outdoors. It seems like the EVF would show a brighter more accurate image in the viewfinder than an optical view finder. Especially for us older guys whose vision may not be as good as it once was. Is this a correct assumption? I'm trying to decide if that should be a factor when deciding between a dslr and a mirrorless camera. Any input would be appreciated. :)

I switched from a Canon ties to the d750 I little over 2 years ago. I wanted a full frame and wanted low light performance. Back last Christmas week it took a small wave at the beach when I was doing some landscape. It died. I had bought an extended warranty that covered such damages so I got a check for what I paid for it. So I got to use it for a year and a half for free minus the cost of the warranty. I could have replaced it with another d750, the d780 or the z6 or z6 II. I opted for the z6 II for the same reasons you gave about the grip and card slots. I'm not a professional but I right it's better to have those features just in case than not to have them. The z6 II is better in low light than the d750. The other advantages outweighed everything the d750 or d780 had to offer. The eye auto focus, low light, the way the z lenses work with the body for image stabilization, the faster frames rates and increased buffer, the EVF and the ability to see your exposure in real time, all the things you can display inside the EVF such as your level and the histogram. There's way more benefits to the z6 II for me too hot have gone to it. Oh and silent mode is great. I took pictures at my daughter's play. I had to keep looking at the back to make sure I was actually taking pictures because it's silent.

Couldn't have said it better myself. At the time I made this video, I still had my D750 as a backup, but after getting more and more shoots completed with the Z6ii, I sold my D750 backup and used that $$$ toward a second Z6ii (as a backup). I still have much love for the D750m but the Z6ii truly is the first "game changer" camera body from Nikon that hits all of the needs I have in replacing the D750, without extras that I don't need. The Z6ii is a gem.

Sensible review from a working pro. I needed to hear why not the original Z6 caused there’s a used one available so when you mentioned about the battery grip being nothing other than just an additional battery holder, now I can see the sense in going for the newer model. Thanks. BTW, subbed and 👍
@MikeMcGeePhotography
@MikeMcGeePhotography 2 года назад
Hi Phillip, thanks for your comment! For me, yes, the things against the original Z6 was the lack of a functional battery grip. Since I'm a portrait shooter, my D750 with the battery grip was so smooth, I need the option to shoot with the grip, so that was a dealbreaker for me. The single card slot of the Z6 was a negative as well, but honestly not a dealbreaker since I've never actually had a card fail, but having two card slots in the Z6ii is nice as well and I use them as a mirrored system in case one fails. I also remember reading that Nikon was going to stop firmware updates on the Z6 due to its single processor, and thus, it will/(does?) have a focusing system that is less advanced, but all in all, it was mainly about the battery grip. :) Thanks for watching!

As a lover of vintage manual focus Nikon glass, the FTZ adapter is actually a huge mark *against* any of the Z mount cameras. Switching over to a Z mount camera means I lose connectivity between my lenses and my camera, which is a big deal for me. And while I do have a few AF-D lenses that will lose autofocus, that's less of an issue for me because at least all of the relevant information is being relayed to the camera. But if I were in your position using mainly newer AF-S lenses, then absolutely I'd switch. If someone comes out with an FTZ adapter that incorporates an aperture feeler ring like every FX DSLR has, they will likely make a lot of money and drive a lot of shooters like me to make the switch to the Z mount.
@MikeMcGeePhotography
@MikeMcGeePhotography 3 года назад
Hey Ben, that's an excellent point, and one I should have probably clarified since the FTZ adapter *for me* was being used with modern lenses, like my trusty 85mm f/1.4G (AF-S Nikkor). As you mentioned, the FTZ adapter only *autofocuses* with lenses that have built-in autofocus motors (AF-I, AF-P, AF-S) and will work in *manual focus* with AF and AF-D lenses. Older manual focus F lenses, AI, and AI-S, etc. won't pass through the info with the FTZ adapter. However, there is an import adapter that is really cheap that will supposedly work with the older manual lenses you described. It's a SHOTEN or K&F or GABALE brand from China (rebranded as various brands) and literally like $40 on eBay. Might be worth testing it out as an option for your older manual-focus only lenses as I don't have any to test it with. Hope this info assists you and thanks for your feedback.

Hi Mike, We are in school photography, and I have now purchased a system camera for the 2nd time. The first, a Sony A7, I returned after a week of use. Now I have bought another system camera, this time the Nikon z6-2. The reason why I returned the Sony had 2 causes. He could not focus in a normal gaming room at a school or living room during a family shoot. The viewfinder also remained very dark, which I am not used to, as I have always worked with an SLR. I have completely read through the instructions for use and also the menu in the camera. But can't find anything to clear the monitor or viewfinder. Because during studio work at schools, the viewfinder is simply too dark, and that does not really work well. As a result, I keep reaching for my old trusty D850 so that I can continue. Where should I do this setting to get my viewfinder cum monitor clear for normal photography? Please provide your solution Gr. Herman H. Heutink Plan B photography
@MikeMcGeePhotography

besides adjusting the viewfinder's display brightness (Setup Menu: Viewfinder Brightness), the other setting you will review/toggle is to change is "D9: Apply settings to live view" and then turn this OFF, if you're setting will be using an exterior strobe, etc.

Hi Mateus, thanks for your kind words. For me, I set the viewfinder/LCD to "Viewfinder Priority" so it behaves much like a DSLR for the "playback" of images. That means I use the optical viewfinder when shooting portraits. I only use the LCD to shoot with when shooting product, and both are nice options. You may want to find my "6 months later" follow up video on the Z6ii, because battery life hasn't been an issue at all. I also use a battery grip which allows for a second battery to be connected, but I never even blow through the first one on a shoot. Hope this info helps, and thanks again.

Oh Mike. I have two D750s and am in love with them. I have no idea how many tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of shots I've taken with them. And I've probably got a couple of dozen F-mount lenses. I've been looking at the Z6II and have asked myself if I really and truly need to make the move. My bank account has been thankful that, up until watching this video, my answer has been that no, I'm fine with the D750. Well, it looks like I was wrong. Now that I've watched this REALLY informative video my arguments about not moving to the Z6II are being dashed, and you're going to cost me a lot of money. :-)

I hear ya! Thanks for your comment, and I'm glad this video helped explain things. That's EXACTLY what I thought as well that my D750 was more than enough camera, (and it still is!) however, when you actually get used to the Z6ii, and start implementing the Eye Auto-focus into the mix, it's a pretty remarkable device. If you're like me, I'm guessing you have two D750's where started migrating my lenses to mirrorless, and then found that I was in trouble if I wanted to use a native mirrorless lens on my "backup" D750. So, *gulp* it was with much sadness that I sold off my excellent D750, and bought another Z6ii as my backup. I'm now fully invested in the Nikon Mirrorless system, and besides the bank account hit, I have no regrets. I pre-apologize for the financial hit you might take, but once you shoot continuous with Eye AF, you'll be wondering how you ever did otherwise. Cheers! :)

Thank you for the video! For those who still want or have the D750, regarding the focus system, AF-C with 3D mode works quite well on eyes and definitely on faces, and Group Area will choose a face if there is one . In Live View, the options Object Tracking and People Tracking do exist and they are for the whole sensor (unlike in view finder mode). It's not as precise as the Zs that selects the eye but still quite efficient for most situations. Happy shooting!

Since I mainly shoot 50p content it seems the Z5 would be the sensible buy. I do have one VERY BIG complaint about the Z6ii that nobody ever mentions. If you bump the toggle switch it randomly moves the location of the focus point and I never know where it will be when I pick up my camera. All my DSLR Nikons are able to lock my focus point wherever I would like it to be. It is very annoying not knowing where it will be when I go to take a shot. I do realize that I can make it go to the center with one push of a button but I shouldn't have to do that every time so I know where it will be located. Seems like it could be assigned to a button to lock it in place with a software update.
@MikeMcGeePhotography
@MikeMcGeePhotography 2 года назад
Hi Jeff, that's interesting. I've never run into that specific issue. I *did* run into an issue of accidentally turning the dial on modern Z-mount lenses, and in doing so that would change the Aperture setting by default. I solved that by making the dial non-functional since I already have an Aperture dial on the camera. But in terms of bumping the focus point, how exactly is that happening? Are you inadvertently hitting the directional pad (with the "OK" in the middle) or the small sub-selector "joystick" that's above the "I" button? Just curious about this. It seems somewhat difficult to accident bump the directional pad since it takes a bit of force to click into each position, but I could see how this would be a major concern if your thumb just rests on this spot, etc.
@grandpawjeff8710
@grandpawjeff8710 2 года назад
@@MikeMcGeePhotography The toggle switch below the AF on button moves the focus point when bumped and with it being right under the back button focus and being where my thumb naturally goes to when I pick up the camera, just about very time I go to shoot the focus point is in an odd location and I need to move it before I can take a photo, often times making me miss a shot.

As long as the Z6 (II) can't nail focus in the dark without using that obnoxiously bright green focus aid light on the body, I still need to use my trusty D750 & SB-910's subtle AF assist beam to nail focus on people dancing in the dark. My style is candid and spontaneous. Nobody ever saw the red AF assist beam on my SB-910. But they will immediately stop moving and be blinded by the green AF light on the Z6's body. The moment is gone. So I can't use that. And the SB-910's AF assist light is disabled when using on the Z6/Z7 (II). I still baffles me that a completely new generation of camera makes it impossible for me to continue shooting in a style that literally is the reason clients book me. This "Here is a totally new camera, but you can't shoot that way anymore". I've read people using their Z6 & speedlight for dancefloor scenes and setting it on manual focus, fixed on F8 and dragging the shutter with slow speeds while using flash. But I left that people-lit-up-by-flash-with-swirly-background-&-lights look behind me in 2010, I don't want to go back to that. It's the biggest let down for me from the Nikon Z system and I'm still hoping one day Nikon (or a third party) finds a solution. All other things (apart from the inadequate AF from the original Z6 and increased battery usage) are a improvement in usability & performance. I'm streamlining my workflow by adding a Z6 II to my Z6 this month. And only using the D750 for the scenes I explained above, instead of running around with a Z6 & D750 on my dual camera harness.
