If you just look at the price alone, what you get with the Z6ii is amazing. The IBIS, the new mount (Sony refuses to change the mount, despite that their FF IBIS barely works because of it), amazing shadow recovery, great lenses, the best raw files, the AF is snappy and the EVF / LCD(the new Sony a1 has a worse LCD screen in size and resolution) are great. The only other mirrorless camera in the price range of the Z6ii is the A7iii, and the Z6ii blows that out of the water. It out performs the r6, which costs $500USD more and the Z6ii comes with the FTZ adapter for that $2000USD price. It's an amazing camera, but on RU-vid it seems like the only thing that matters with cameras is the eye AF overlay.
@senthilbp

True. It's as though Eye AF or nothing.
@RiposteThis
@RiposteThis 3 года назад
@@senthilbp And I get it, eye AF is amazing, but if you look at hit rates with eye AF, Nikon is up there with Sony and Canon, it's just the overlay doesn't look at smooth. Sony is definitely the king and that's cool with me, but there are so many other things that make a camera great that the Sony lacks on but reviewers just don't care about that.

Completely agree....Z6ii feels much more intuitive to use with slick menus, the i menu, programmable buttons/lens focus ring....whats not to like? Just a shame that most You Tube reviewers do it down.

Switched from Sony RIV to Z6ii/Z7ii. I can not say once that I’ve said man I miss the Sony AF. The difference is overblown by reviewers and doesn’t translate to real world. Handling a Sony feels like handling high tech but not a camera. And like you said the experience can make or break. And Z glass is untouched. IQ tests confirm this not really an opinion. Everyone laughed at the z mount size marketing but it seems to be proving itself.

The Nikon NASA F4 Electronic Still Camera was one of the first and rarest fully digital cameras with development started in 1987.[1] While Nikon delivered a modified Nikon F4 body, most of the electronics for the digital camera and housings were designed and built by NASA at the Johnson Space Center and other suppliers. It was first flown in September 1991 on board the Space Shuttle Discovery, mission STS-48.[

The difference in autofocus on the Sony does make a difference in the real world for me. However, I still use both my Sony a7R IV and my Nikon Z7! It's all about personal preference and subject-matter.

@@LeighAndRaymond Nice video! Wondering about switching to Nikon from Sony. I have looked everywhere, and cant find any information on the max shutterspeeds in silent shooting. I’ve just switched from the a7R4 to the z6ii and there is a decent difference between AF. Sony is ahead and it’s clear but not as far as before. Sony’s EAF and standard AF is much more snappier.

The only remaining F-mount lens that I still own is the 200-500mm f/5.6. The images that I’m getting from these cameras are amazing. The Z-Mount lenses are just phenomenal. I’ve been a photographer and Nikon user for more years than I care to admit. Let’s just say my first “professional” camera was the Nikon F2, and these Z-mount lenses are the best I’ve ever used.

I got the Z6 gen 1 recently after selling my old D600. I didn't think I'd be getting along with mirrorless so easily. This has been a refreshing experience for me. I am actually more keen on doing weekend photography again instead of just paid shoots only. There is a certain inspiration I haven't felt for years. Z series is just so practical and though there are things like less shots per battery charge and getting used to some of the new controls locations on the back of the camera... it's all just buttery smooth Nikon experience with noticeably improved image quality.

very great simple explanation. thanks Leigh. in fact I rcvd my Z6 II, 3 days ago but not opened yet as I watched some stupid horrible reviews that were criticizing focus abilities and was thinking to change it which was annoying as I am a Nikon fan. your explanation made me to overcome all hesitations and sure Ill enjoy it as I had fun with D7200 and D800E so far. I couldnt believe Nikon make such a mistake as some of reviews were downgrading this beautiful fabulous camera, for people who only check the specs on paper of course its easy to decide while they have no idea about real world.

Thanks for the overview/review! I've been looking for a replacement for both M8 and D3 in one camera and, since the z7ii would be overkill in my twilight years, settled on the Z6ii. Should be here by the end of the month. Coming from the D3 with its dual CF card slots, I was surprised by the mixed cards here. Maybe a matter of space. I much prefer a smaller camera after the D3! I also ordered a Z-to-M adapter so I can see if my M lenses work well on the Z6ii.

I sold my Z6, 24-70 f/4S, and the FTZ adapter to MPB and ordered the Z6 II and Z7 II. I am keeping my D810, which was Astro modified to full-spectrum for deep space object (DSO) photography. I don't have any F-mount lenses anymore, and I am using the William Optics Red Cat for my DSO work. I have the Z 14-30mm f/4 S for landscapes, 20 mm f/1.8 S for nightscapes, and 70-200 f/2.8 S with TC-1.4x and 2.0X teleconverters for portrait and wildlife. Giving up the FTZ means I am going all-in the Z ecosystem.

I love my Z6-II. I picked it over the Z7-II because the Z6-II is better with video than the 7. So far, it is a great addition to my Nikon gear. With all of its technology, it cannot beat (yet) the D500 for high-speed photography. I sold most of my lenses and kept a few to work with the PTZ adapter, which is flawless with the Z6-II. Thank you for the extra info about the video side of the camera. I never wanted to shoot video with my still cameras, but I guess it is so advanced now, that I might go with the flow and start shooting some short video clips between still shots. Thanks again for staying in the neighborhood (Arizona) and showing the beauty of our backyard. Tucson here.

I do like the Nikon ergonomics, and I love full time manual override on the focus for those time that I disagree with the AI about the subject of my photo. The card slots issue is slightly annoying, but the same as in the D500 and D850. A like new Z6 can be purchased for $800 less than the Z6ii. I’m not sure there is enough improvement to justify the difference in price. Thanks for a great review!

Great review, thanks! Having sold all my Nikon dslr kit while it had value I've been waiting out the MILC wars and the Z6ii is very compelling... My plan was to get an A7RIII and the Tammy 28-200 until the A7IV dropped, but now I'm reconsidering... purely for the colors of Nikon. Out of Canon, Fuji, Sony, etc. Nikon's color science still nails 95% of what I try to get out of post. Combined with the exceptional price-2-performance of the 24-70 F4... very compelling. With 6 children, low light and af are huge considerations but it seems the last firmware update resolved quite a bit of that... not at R6 specs yet but. Thanks again, excellent (and useful) content. (My sister lives in Phoenix, and I use to serve aboard the USS Tucson Submarine :D).

Great, down to earth commentary. I've been mostly using my Olympus lately, and before that, my Fuji X system. My Nikon is largely collecting dust. But just yesterday because I had to shoot a client that could potentially use their images for up to billboard size, I hauled out my trusty D850. Still a fantastic camera, but I'm starting to really appreciate the lighter weight, IBIS, and deeper tech integration that the mirrorless cameras offer. Much as I loved them, I don't think I will continue with the Fuji any more unless they can really eke out more from their X-sensor. So, this has me wondering if I should more heavily into the Nikon Z series, and particularly if the Z7ii is worth the extra money over the Z6ii.

Thank you for your great review of this camera. I am waiting for mine to arrive in the mail. I made the great leap last night after contemplating it for 2 weeks and going over all the pros and cons I could find online. Just a year ago I was coming from a D80, (let that sink in) and was afraid to jump to the z6 back then (cost was prohibitive then too). Costco had a package deal on the z50 with 16mm-50mm plus ftz adapter. So I went with that. Thank God my husband is happy to take my hand-me-downs...😄! No, now we will have two great cameras to use for whatever it is we are doing (he needs a decent video camera for work/job sites). I am an enthusiast that has been published in the past and because I love horses, wildlife and nature in general, I am always finding limitations in my knowledge and my equipment. I can be shooting action in an indoor arena with horses moving quickly (my nightmare for photography) or little birds flitting around or a sunrise over the lake. My background is that I'm an artist and have studied design, colour and composition, so I have that going for me. Now I have a lump sum check that will cover the cost of this camera plus two great lenses (28mm-70mm nikkor and the 150mm - 600mm contemporary sigma) which will go nicely with my current 70mm-300mm nikkor I've had since 2009. I think I'm good for lenses ... 😉 (I still don't have any fast glass...but will start saving my pennies for sure). I have been a Nikon shooter since 2005 when I was introduced to them. I had to learn how to use the camera back then for my work and loved it so much I bought the same camera (Nikon D80). Before that was Fuji and before that was Pentax (35mm). I just found your channel and look forward to watching more of your content. Can't wait to use this camera! Cheers! 🙂

Excellent video on the Z6 II, Leigh! As a landscape and product photographer, I've used "manual" focus stacking with great success with my small product photography. However, using the Nikon Z7's in-camera "Focus Shift Shooting" mode, (with camera on a solid tripod, using AF, of course, manual exposure and in AF-S mode, and the ultra-sharp Nikkor S 50 f/1.8 at f/8), when I set the first exposure's focus point on the nearest point of the subject (or bottom, if a vertical subject like a beer bottle) and set it for 25 or 35 shots, with a Focus Step Width of 5, Interval until next shot of 3, First frame exposure lock ON, Peaking Stack image OFF, Silent Photography ON (unless using flash), and Start. I find that the focus point did not travel "up" or through the subject as expected, thus invariably resulting in areas of unsharpness! Not sure what I'm missing here, but I would think that in a controlled studio environment, this function should work as well as my manual focus stacking does! Thanks, and be safe!

The battery grip, when using the camera in portrait mode, saves wear and tear on my mildly arthritic hands and is a big ergonomic improvement. I would have also preferred two XQD/CFX cards slots. First my partner got the Z50 and now I managed to get a great offer on a z7 ... I was apperhensive at first going from D810 ... and it took me a while to get used to autofocus ... but now once I know how to set it up properly and use it, it's awesome! I get ultra sharp focus using Sigma 150-600 with a x2 Sigma TC and this is at f13 0_o something that no DSLR would ever manage. Also the auto-area mode for birds in flight is awesome, FPS is decent and enough for my needs and in general I can take amazing pictures and for the first time I don't feel that the camera is limitting my options in any way ... that's probably also due to awesome ergonomics! The 2 front programmable buttons are awesome and I can change everything I need on the fly. I usually go from single point to auto area focus modes a lot, and it just a button press and 1 click on the front wheel. I don't even have to take my eye away from the viewfinder. And also you get full on 20MP crop sensor for increasing that zoom even more if you want to frame that way ... and IBIS which works great! I can go ridiculously slow on the shutter and still get sharp shots ... anyway. TL;DR I've read a lot of negative reviews on Nikon Z, but after my partner tried the Z50 I decided to try the Z7 and it's awesome 0_o

Agree with all the points mentioned. I'm using the Z6II as well. It gives a good compromise for all application. The Z lenses are the ones creating most of the stellar photos, be it a photograph or video. Future firmware will only makes it better. I wish it has 2 CFexpress instead of 1 though....

When you shift your eyes during a video, you remind me of Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles. Which was what got a lot of guys interested in that band. Wow! And about the Z6 II, I wonder if your could next compare the Z7 with the Z7 II. I love my Z7 and wonder if it’s worth the upgrade.

I just purchased this camera for the wife for her upcoming birthday. It is hopefully a nice upgrade from her D3300, I purchased 10 or so years ago. With the kit lens, and other goodies it came to about 5k. I was sweating thinking she would hate it. Thank you for allowing me to breath a bit easier.

I am new to Nikon, coming from Fuji which I have just sold. I will be buying the Z6ii. Is the Z24-120 F4 a good all-around lens? Landscape and very few portraits. Or stay with the 24-70 F4 lens and get a fast wide angle for night work and an equivalent 70-200 lens as I cannot find a Z 70-200. Thanks

I just made the jump 2 months ago and opted for a Z6 and Z7 with FTZ for my F glass and a couple 24-70 f/4 S lenses for video. I shoot architecture, product and corporate photography and video. The value on 2nd hand, 1st generation Z market was so attractive, I just couldn't help myself. Wow is the only word I can say. I no longer have a need for my Sony A6000, 6500 and A7sii, because the dynamic range and video features are equally good if not better and I prefer the Nikon color when grading footage. If your on the fence about the Z line, step into the 1st generation Zs. Don't believe all the negative hype about these cameras, they are fantastic. The Z mount is truly a revolutionary step forward ahead of all the competitors on the market. I would not be surprised to see Nikon come out with a MF (fuji Type sensor), which may potentially fit in the current Z mount frame- That would be something neither Canon or Sony could replicate with their current lens mount

Don’t know if you will reply because this is days old . Here goes! I shoot live music videography with Nikon dslrs . I was good tap to autofocus subject tracking while on a gimbal. Can I do this on the rear LCD on the Z6ii and how does it compare to the Sony a7siii? If you were buying one over the other for action type gimbal use which one ? It has to be ease of use and tracking ability. Thanks

Have you ever tried "interval timer shooting" on the Z6II? My setting is A, auto ISO up to 51200, over 1000 photos. I have a random issue, the first 10 to 20 photos are overexposed then it shows exposure back to normal.

This is the first time I’ve seen someone complain about dual card slots lol. Extra backup at any point is not only smart but needed. I love that they brought in dual cards and not fussed one but personally about 2 different types. I’d rather two than only one. Loved the rest of the video. I’ve switched from Sony A7R4 and the only thing I miss is the AF. Luckily the gap has shrunk and whilst not in the same ballpark as Sony it’s extremely good.

Haha indeed, 2 is always better than 1. But based on my usage as a hobby shooter since 2008 with Nikon D80, then D7100, a6000, and now turn to the Fuji xt30, then xt5 + Lumix S5II. Along with varieties of SD cards (SanDisk, Sony, Kingston, Lexar), in conditions like rain, snow, tropic, and desert heat (I did a lot of travel and hiking/camping trip). No single card lost my footage during these 15 years of shooting.😂 Or call me a lucky shooter. I upload my photos to my Mac or iPad every day when I'm finished shooting and returning home/hotel, so there is plenty of wear and tear with my SD cards. After these years, no issues there with read and write speed, no lost data, and my Mac/iPad reads my card perfectly. But yeah, if you have, $$ and an extra is a good idea anyways.

Thank you for a great review. I am considering the Z6II (or perhaps Z7II), moving up from an early Olympus OM-D micro 4/3's system. I like the compactness of it for travel (vs a DSLR) but the camera looks kind of "plastic-y" in all the videos. Does it feel like a solid camera ? I don't want to spend 2-3K on a camera body that doesn't feel like professional tool. The Olympus was very good in this respect (for the money) but I would like to move back to a Nikon system even though I am going to have to buy new lenses. ( I had Nikon's original DSLR the D700 when it first came out).

Getting close to ordering a Nikon Z6II. Mostly for using with all my old vintage lenses as well as Lensbaby MF lenses. I may go Z6 or Z6II. Depending on my decision for it as a video camera with my Atomos Ninja V. However the firmware update via WiFi/Bluetooth to phone, almost makes the $400 difference a no brained. How is the live peaking on the z6 and Z6II for old MF lenses? Any difference between models? Anyway, may order one of the Z cameras and contact KEH about my older Nikon DSLR’s and put the cameras I don’t like using towards a camera I do like to use.

At 09:48. "They seem to do everything quite well". I think 40 years ago that was Nikon's unofficial design philosophy. They didn't innovate, but every feature and function included in a design was rock solid in build and performance. Would like to see them return to that. There are bells and whistles, and then there are reliable and dependable tools.

I am a loyal nikon shooter and I am considering the z62 because of all the nikon glass I own. My question is how well will lenses like my 200-500 Nikkor and other FX lenses work with the Z62 and the adapter. Will focus lag. What are the trade offs if any.

Watching dozens of long reviews on the new Nikons Z6II and also being an owner of a D3300 Nikon DSLR, the general consensus is that Nikon has the richest colors, and most beautiful still photos of any camera, while the main complaint is that the auto focus isn't good for full time video production of fast moving objects, compared to the Canon and Sony offerings. But the Nikon is also priced very good. As well, Nikon is very proactive about free firmware upgrades, that allow their cameras to continue to be upgraded for free, without adding new lenses or hardware. The future firmware upgrades might solve some of the current limitations.
