I nearly gave up photographing wildlife today, my Z6II and Nikon 200-500mm made capturing birds in low light or back-lit made me question why I still persevere. But I didn’t give up, and push on and was rewarded with a few worthwhile photos.

Don’t you dare pack it in!! I find your channel and videos refreshing, honest and it shows what can be achieved on a lower budget than the top photographers can afford. We all have off days, at least you have the location settings and environment to capture exotic images. So please keep up you excellent work and give us us all loads more videos.

Thank you very much, very much appreciated your feedback 🙏. I wanted to show that sometimes we can feel down and out, but if we persist, then we have the chance like I did on this day to get some nice photos.

Great video Charles! I've had the exact same problems with my Z6ii / 200-500mm as well. Sometimes it works great and can't miss focus all day long - other times not so much. LOL. Frustrating as heck. Stay in the fight though and keep pumping out these good videos please.

Thanks for the tips! And yes at times it gets very frustrating, but when you are dedicated to capturing wildlife, you've just got to keep going and look to the future.

Nice story telling about your struggleless photographing birds. Thanks for putting a map and the path your walked into the story. I also like your commitment to family as you had to help your daughter on the last planned photo trip.

Enjoy your videos. If it was easy shooting wildlife, the good shots wouldn’t be as rewarding. The fun is in the hard work. I’m enjoying my new Z6ii and 100 - 400 Nikkor S line lens. Thanks for the useful tips and content.

Good on you for persevering and at least you got the koala and that lovely rosella. A good lesson for us to check gear before leaving. I shoot that lens on Z7II and have got stunning photos if bird out in the clear. I looked at the new lens but not much lighter than 200-500mm and f stop not as good. Thinking not worth the change. Wish Nikon would do an update the bird auto focus on Z6 & 7s.

Thank you, I will be buying the Nikon Z 180-600mm f5.6-f6.3 next year sometime, as it gives me an extra 100mm and is designed specificly for the Z series cameras

Yes, out the other day with my Panasonic G9 to try it out at Osprey House. 100 or so school kids doing school projects. But that's OK. What l didn't think of was the tide it was in so no sea birds. Went up to Eden on the lake and did a little better. Took 132 photos with about 5 that were reasonable.

I notice you are in Brisbane. It’s a problem that birds live in trees as it’s hard to get on eye level. I think that is why many bird photographers like shore birds, they can just lie on the ground. Have you tried Archerfield Wetlands? A lot of low shrubbery, not always clear shots but less of a strain on the neck and a good variety of birds. I counted 34 species yesterday. There are a few other places around Brisbane that are similar. Unfortunately eBird hotspots is not always helpful for a bird photographer as many good bird watching locations are not necessarily good photography locations. You never know we may bump into each other one day. Cheers.

Thank you very Tony for your reply, very much appreciated. I live in Kallangur on the northside of Brisabne and my health isn't that good so I go to places where I don't have to walk to far and Archerfield Wetlands is to long of a walk for me. I've been to Wynnum Wetlands Birdhide, Sandy Camp Road Wetlands Reserve, Oxenford Weir on the southside. On the Northside, Lake Samsonvale, Lake Eden, Black Duck Lagoon, Halpine lake Reserve and Sandstone Lakes near Bribie Island.

@@CharlesNPhotography Yes Archerfield is a long walk. I pretty much do the end from Bowhill Road to the lake. Tinchi Tamba isn’t bad either which is near you. I’ve been to some of the places you mentioned and I need to do a few more on the northside. And the end of the day it is just great to be out and about. Duade Paton has a similar philosophy. Just enjoy it mate. The bad days make the good days better.

Nice photos and I agree it's very difficult to get sharp photos with the Z6ii and 200-500mm shooting birds. I'm consedering to replace my Z6ii into the Z8 or waiting update firmware.
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography Год назад
In the conditions that I faced on that day it certainly was. But on clear days I find it easy. The Z8 would be great 😉

Buy a d500. I love my Z6 but it's really not a great wildlife camera so I'm now looking for a secondhabd d500 to use alongside my Z6, far cheaper than buying a Z8/Z9.

I wonder how the new Nikor Z 180-600mm would work in your situation. It seems that there is a significant difference between the lower end Z cameras and the Z9 when it comes to autofocusing. I've been frustrated with my previous D810 and now my Z7ii with lowlight autofocus and the overall speed of the autofocus.
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography Год назад
Yes, there is a big difference in Af speed between the Z6II and the Z8 and Z9. The Z7II is even slower than the Z6II in AF speed. From what I've been able to learn from Nikon is that the Z 180-600mm will be quicker to lock AF than the 200-500mm. So hopefull this will help me. I'm saving for the Z 180-600mm, and hoping that by Easter next year I'll be able to afford one.

@@felixifloresrodriquez3306 I think that this is the lens that us regular wildlife photographers have been waiting for and $3000 is quite reasonable. I was hoping that the weight would have been less though, as it looks like it's the same weight as the 200-500mm
