Ken, a member of my family is a recognized fashion photographer working with some of the top models regularly. The camera she uses is Canon 5D Mark 4 and will stay with Canon because of investment in glass and it is a superb camera. She used my Z 711 with 24-70 S lens and was blown away by the quality of the file, tonality, color. I think that we are getting a little over the top in our endless picking apart of different cameras. I remember shooting Formula 1 racing with a Nikon F. Tri-x, manual focus of course, and no motor drive. Quality was off the graph. To me it is - the quality of the FILE, color rendition and tonality. And, respectfully, this is where Nikon should get a little praise. Best and thanks for your forum.
@KenRockwellTV

Nikon and Canon have different looks. Both are superb; it’s up to the artist to pick one or the other based on personal preference. While I prefer Canon’s ergonomics, again it’s a personal decision - and ergonomics are critical when you shoot all day. DSLRs handle faster than Mirrorless. Thanks!

@@KenRockwellTV Interesting and thanks for response. Actually, the camera that ergonomically I adore and cannot get rid of is the old Nikon D7000. Old, but underrated. I think the issue is still the file and color, tonality. Appreciate your responses.

@@josephcattano6150 I have one of those - it is an awesome camera. I use a z50 because I wanted a more modern censor, and like the size and handling for travel etc. I think we've gone insane wrt camera specs. I loved the D40 because it was light, handled well, and took great pictures at a mere 6 megapixels...now pros need fast and sharp so that they can compete.

I came back to watch this review before I purchase this camera. I shoot mostly landscapes. The biggest thing I agree with is the color rendition that comes straight out of this camera is unlike any other camera I've shot with. I've also shot with the Canon EOS R5 and the Sony a7R IV, and while the focusing capabilities are better on those systems, it all comes back to the color for me. Nikon's colors just have something about them that I favor over the others. So after watching this review, despite its shortcomings, I think this is the camera for me. Thanks for a thorough and honest review!
@KenRockwellTV
@KenRockwellTV 2 года назад
It’s all about color. If Nikon gives you your look, then it’s Nikon all the way. All the Nikons have similar color; no one ever talks about the R5 and it’s superb as well. Thanks!

I'm a huge Nikonian. I've owned Nikons since the 80's. My first new Nikon was the N8008. I've never owned a Canon. I'm ready to make the switch to mirrorless. But this Z7 is disappointing. It looks and feels cheap, especially at this price point. I know that one advantage to mirrorless is smaller and lighter, but this body is actually too small and the ergonomics are lacking compared to my D800E. The auto focus on the Z7 is also known to be sub par. So I am left with either getting a Canon (not likely) or waiting for a Z8, which I am confident is coming, because the Z9 is the pro camera and I refuse to believe that the Z7 is considered the equivalent of the D800 series.

Great review man. I really like the fact you went into detail about build quality. I wish more reviews contained this information. Where it's made, how it's made, and what it's made of, does matter in a time when more and more cost cutting measures are used by manufacturers. I'd gladly pay more for a well built product than less for a cheaply made one.

Wow! This review is packed with information! More thorough than any review I have seen. One problem I have had with mirrorless cameras is the grip. This is where the R5 beats the z hands down. Or hands on! Feels just like a DSLR. I never thought I'd even consider switching to Canon. Still unlikely. About half my lenses will not af with the ftz adapter. So, I have to take a leap, especially financially, if I move to mirrorless whether Nikon or Canon. I've been considering the Z7ii to complement my D500 but this review leaves me doubting the wisdom of that.

Go Canon. I did. When you go Mirrorless very little of what you own comes with you, and everything changes in Mirrorless. Nikon has NEVER been the leader in Mirrorless and it’s not likely they ever will. See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm Thanks!

If you are, go Canon. When you go mirrorless very little of what you have now works that well with the new Nikon system. In a few years you’ll eventually have re-bought everything for Mirrorless, and then will realize as I’m telling you now that you should select which brand of system is best for you and go with it from the start. Mirrorless is a completely different world with different leaders. I personally prefer and suggest Canon. Nikon is severely flawed for people like me who owned lots of Nikon lenses because the FTZ adapters won’t autofocus with many of Nikon’s lenses. Go Canon if you go mirrorless. Thanks!

Advice needed: I am still shooting with D7000, but the idea of upgrading the body has been slowly growing in my mind. Have had D7000 for over 12 years now and it still performs well, but low-light performance, contrast and AF capabilities are limiting more and more often and I feel like the glass would deserve a better body at this point. Since I own AF-S 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 VRII, I want to stick with Nikon platform. Going through tons of DSLR vs. mirrorless reviews and discussions and trying to catch-up with the recent development of the market, I have not been able to decide if it is a good time to switch to something like Z6 with FTZ, or stay with DSLR and get D780. I don't shoot much video, mostly stills / ladscape / sports / portraits, you know, all-round hobby photographer. Any advice would be appreciated =)

Like night and day DSLR vs Mirrorless. Mirrorless is new and popular and lets you see and set and magnify everything all through the finder especially in broad daylight, while a DSLR gets the job done faster. Mirrorless always makes you wait a fraction of a second for the camera to respond while DSLR just goes. Which is more important to you?

@@KenRockwellTV Thanks for your quick reply =) The thing is, I have really got used to having an optical viewfinder, sadly I have not been able to get my hands on Z6 (or equivalent) to see how much of a difference it would be - I plan to do that regardless. I have angel bird CF express be cards that read at 1700 Mb and they write generally between 600 and 1000 Mb a second to a m.2 ssd drive. The best you’re going to get with a UHS to card is like 270 Mb. The CF express B slot was a big deciding factor for me as I already had them for my d850. More for super sharp landscapes and also high res 360 sphericals (just upgraded shaved 10.5 to 8-15mm) I'm having a really hard time deciding on Z7ii or the d850! One major issue why I'm swaying towards Z7II is because I have some serious mobility challenges to consider and although Ive very well managed larger bodies and lenses.. age is getting the better of me and trying to cut down on weight. I just don't want that to be the deciding factor when there are other areas of concern that You've mentioned (especially build outside of Japan because living here i KNOW that Japanese have much higher standards) All round.. Im sorta just shy of a coin toss.. Thoughts... Z7ii? ? D850? ... losing sleep over this

@@KenRockwellTV Thanks man! I wound up going with the z7ii Price wasn't the issue it was a number of things you'd mentioned in this video. Me sticking with D800s wasnt a budget thing it was a weight thing and the question of "what more could anyone really need?" Im not sure how many Ive went through because I worked 'm over pretty bad.. they could take a beating though! A plastic Z7ii? this scared me... I am simply blown away at this point on so many levels though! Thanks for all the great work you've done over the years! Your 4K monitor has more than 8 megapixels. A 4K monitor has 3840 x 2160 "pixels", but in monitor terms, each "pixel" consists of R, G, G, B. Hence, a 4K monitor has 33.17 megapixels if we use the camera manufacturers' terminology.

Actually, no. A pixel, or Picture Element, consist of R, G and B samples to make one pixel. But, you are quite a know guy out here, I always disagree with absolute statement. I think you should update that page, or at least not link it in (almost) 2023. I think it is misleading and many points not up to date. Just out of my mind: - SD Space - Buffer - Computer Computational Power needed - Backup - Buring onto CDs - etc... There are way many points that I think are highly irrelevant in today's standard. Just to put into perspective, when I bought my D7200, I thought I would have needed 128GB of space because of all this RAW thing, so I bought 2 in order to put them in backup mode. Even in a 3 weeks trip, having shoot more than 2K photos, haven't filled it up. And that single SD costed just Tens of euros (a good SanDisk one, mind you). Yesterday, in a MediaMarket I saw an 8TB external disk at a mere 150-ish bucks (Sandisk not a low tier brand). Speaking of power, computer are starting to become much more powerful than our software nowadays. An Intel 13th gen laptop or Ryzen 6th gen, are powerhouses for just around 1K in a portable format. Without speaking the new Macbooks M2. I mean...It doesn't really have any drawback now. When I was shooting with my first Nikon D100 sure, I may agree and I also find myself in that situation, but not today. I think I can all sum it up in RAW --> JPG, but not viceversa. At least, shoot RAW, come home, just look if there is anything you need to edit, and just export all the rest in JPG, at least you had the possibility with no real disadvantages (With my Ryzen 9 I can export around 1K photos in minutes, its amazing). I don't wont to change your mind. But just consider what I just said and maybe rethink that article, that's it. Thanks for reading in case.

Hi Ken I'm looking to replace / upgrade my 7dmkii + 6D kit , most of which was lost to major , unprecedented flooding where I live. I'm down to 7Dii body , a 100-400 zoom and a cheap kit lens that I never got around to disposing of. I previously used the 7dii for wildlife and action and the 6d for everything else . Im seriously considering the z7ii to replace the lot . With the Z , I can shoot in crop mode to gain the extra reach of the apsc format for wildlife , or crop in post with the higher pixel count. I will also have all the advantages of full frame. I can get the z7ii for less than the price of a r6 and r7 combo , which have completely different control layouts that will make swapping between them difficult. @@KenRockwellTV Thanks, by the way, for responding to my pot shot. Indeed, there is a dizzying amount of information to be communicated about operation of the Nikon Z cameras. With appreciation …

I used to think Nikon made a Good Camera. After I owned a D7000, for less than 3 months and 3 trips to Nikon, I started to question that. Now having owned a D850 and the 70-200mm 2.8 F, I know they only make Fecal Matter.

When I switch to mirrorless, it'll be a Canon or a Sony. Nikon is only interested in nerfing their cheap cameras to upsell you. No value, no innovation. Plus all their lenses start to squeak after a few years.

The d850 is literally one of if not the best DSLRs ever made. Idk what crack you're smoking to reach that conclusion.

@@sdicosimo6662 Has a Focus success rate of 5%, and that is using it in Focus Priority mode and Single Focus Point, on Stationary Subject. AF tuning-20 thru +20 makes no difference on any lens. Very Noisy Images, even at 100 ISO. Worst DSLR of the 6 I have owned. Nikon has a History of denying they make Defective Cameras, and since I can't ethically sell a Camera I know is Defective to a Pigeon, I will be asking Nikon what Hazardous Materials are in the Camera and Lens, that have to be considered when disposing of it.

No, the D850 is the best Dslr, I have a great keeper rate with mine shooting wildlife. Maybe you got a lemon.

@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 People call me a Nikon hater, but even I have to defend Nikon here. You're not using the D850 correctly or don't know what you're talking about.
