Hey brother Jared, I have been shooting with a Canon t3i and kit lenses for 7 years now. I have no glass of any kind. So I know the Canon workflow. I am ready to upgrade and wanted to ask what should I go with? Maybe mirrorless at this point? I shoot mostly landscapes, concerts, scenery, different outdoor events. I'm looking at the Z7, EOS R, Nikon D850, the Canon 5D Mark IV, and the 6D Mark II for vlogging. What do you suggest? I definitely want to make sure I get something great for my hard earned money. Maybe we can meet up sometime if and when you come to Central Florida. 🤘

Jared I was quite pleased by your balanced presentation of the Z7. You covered the good, the bad, and the ugly with accuracy and made it interesting. I appreciate the hands-on view of different styles of photography and video. Two things: 1. When you mentioned that the image was underexposed because your EVF was a bit bright, I noticed the big, fat live histogram in your EVF, and it was clearly indicating serious underexposure. Had you been paying attention to the histogram, you would not have underexposed, regardless of the brightness setting of the EVF. 2. Since you had banding caused by flickering under the lighting at the venue, why didn’t you have the "Photo Shooting Menu > Flicker Reduction Shooting" function enabled? It may well have cleared up the flicker banding. In any case, thank you for the hard work you put into this video. Your great advice to listen to people who have actually used the camera for a period of time, instead of those who have never seen it or only held it for a few minutes, is quite excellent. I subscribed to your channel and have a new respect for your work. Thanks!

Your real world reviews are legitimately the best camera reviews on RU-vid. Taking a camera through various shooting conditions, TRYING to work with a camera instead of deliberately putting the camera into situations to make it fail, walking us through your issues as they come up - I appreciate all of it. In a blind taste test, I would assume the Z7 and EOS R are complete garbage cameras because of how they're being reviewed by other sources. Focusing on everything a camera does wrong is ignorant. My real world professional use of the EOS R over five jobs this past week have been exceptional. I may not agree with everything you do, but that's life. You, Stephen, and Todd should be proud of your content...Just try to keep your shirt on more, please. Hahaha

Interesting in the wrap-up of the video talking about new users starting with Sony (and I am not a Sony user). The camera companies know there are only so many people who will switch systems. The future is with what new photographers will choose right from the start. I was a newspaper staffer during the EOS revolution in the late 1980s. Many Nikon users switched to Canon, but what we noticed in the coming years was the number of new hires, freelancers and interns who all started with Canon EOS right from the beginning.

Figured I would chime in as to why lighting for opening acts isnt "ramped up" as you put it. OAs tend not to have an LD and rely on the house guy to run their show. They wont know the set well enough to really light the set well and this is further compounded by headlining acts sometimes limiting what they can do. I had one tour where management passed down that the opening act was allowed one look for their entire set with no blackouts; certainly wasn't the best. As far as LED lighting for concerts, they are trying better. Fixtures found at larger shows now allow us to easily dial in color temperature on the fly. Smaller venues tend to have less expensive fixtures, which dont have this feature yet.

Also own a D500 and am looking to get to full frame. Something I haven't seen mentioned but have heard from other photographers I know is that the Nikon EVF is fantastic and about as close/good as you can get to an OVF. I tried the Sony A7R3 in store and hated the viewfinder which really turned me off to mirrorless at the time. I imagine the Z6 will be faster/better focusing - something a D500 owner would appreciate. I've also considered a sidestep to the Fuji XT-3 even though it's crop.

A theory for your "EVF showing the wrong exposure" issue. I could be wrong and the only way to know this is by seeing the JPEG and I don't have the camera anymore to test my theory out. BUT! Perhaps when looking through the EVF the camera is showing you the constant JPEG preview of the scene including the "D-Lighting", lifting shadows, retaining highlights and whatever other settings it applies to the JPEG to give you a "suitable image". But because you are shooting RAW it negates all of those effects when the image is opened in PS or LR. I only say this because I shot some funky images in some of the scene modes and the camera showed me the image in the scene modes when I shot it via the EVF. It was like I was looking at a finished image while I was shooting. Just a hunch.
@froknowsphoto
@froknowsphoto 5 лет назад
I have those settings off. Jpeg preview yes
@johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201
The Sony's provide a jpeg preview as well in camera, but you can change the EVF to not show applied settings basically making it an digital optical viewfinder somewhat. Not sure if that's what you're talking about in this situation Ike. Hope you're well man and I'll see you in the Oastler streams..
@jacknicholasny
@jacknicholasny 5 лет назад
Photo-Me-Ike The EVF has a setting to brighten the monitor when shooting in low light. It can be turned off for seeing the actual exposure.
@victorzuniga5187
@victorzuniga5187 5 лет назад
This applies to sony as well. I have an a7riii and even on my a6000. Images are brighter in EVF and live view screen because it is showing you the camera's "corrected" jpeg preview (not the flatter raw file). The whole histogram thing wouldn't have helped as the entire image in the concert setting was pitch black with her only lit up. That would automatically push the entire histogram to the left.
@michaelmckeept
@michaelmckeept 5 лет назад
One advantage of Nikon and Sony cameras is the nearly ISO invariant sensor. There are even shooters who never high ISO, because pushing the photos in post generally yields a cleaner image than exposing "correctly." I do that for most night photos. Though the Z7 can show banding in certain conditions, (mostly a strong light source on the right of the image) it can be easily be pushed four stops with no degradation of quality, so an underexposed NEF file is no big deal. blog.kasson.com/nikon-z6-7/nikon-z7-banding-constancy/ (JimK of Dpreview forum fame) BTW, the same source noticed that the histogram reads low than the actual settings in low light. Apparently, the Sony does, too, though at lower light levels still.

That pin point focus is based on contrast, as far as I know, it should be used for static object only, like macro or similar. BTW, very balanced review, thanks!

Hi Jared, I feel that majority of current camera reviews only repeat the same popular opinions and PR mumbo jumbo. Watching all of these videos - it sometimes seems like reviewers don't use these cameras enough, just repeat what others said instead of giving their thoughts about the actual usage scenarios. "Time to the viewer" for a video is now really short and nobody seems to do the reviewer job right. Having said that, you do it differently. You actually use the camera, give what seems to be an unbiased opinion and is, in the end, really helpful. Gotta say, I never liked your intro (still don't) and have always been hesitant to subscribe, but - subscribed now!

After watching his reviews of the new mirrorless cameras, my conclusion is - if one is buying their first FF camera, better buy Sony. If one has FF lenses from older cameras, better buy this one (or Canon R, depend on glass owned). OR just use the DSLRs 1 more year or so, before Nikon and Canon come up with the 2nd gen of Z and R. But apparently, neither this one nor the Canon are as bad as some reviews paint them to be. My only gripe with Nikon would be they sell this camera for $1000 more than Canon sell theirs. Why?

Personally although I'll never be able to afford this camera. Still rocking a D5100. I have to say the fact it saves your presets over to Light room is a great feature. At first I thought you meant it baked in the changes directly to the raw but the fact it just moves the sliders for you is wonderful. Non destructive but also makes it so the photo you are seeing in your camera is the photo you end up with. Makes it easier if you like a basic boomify to just do it right from the camera but at the same time it not being destructive.

Maybe the EVF Auto Brightness should be on in low light situations. Or, watch the histogram more than the image when adjusting your exposure. I do a lot of live music photography, I appreciate you showing us the Z7 from the pit. I'm glad it works well with the FTZ and 14-24 2.8G, that's my favorite pit lens.

Thank Jared for the review. As pointed out by Jared after I made my comment about turning on touch: Touch drag focus point is NOT an option while using EVF. There is a reason why the shutter does not come down on Sony etc cameras. The dust what may come in is not attached to the shutter and can damage it more easily than the dust affect the sensor. That can be bad in dusty environments. Dust is easily cleanable from sensor but from shutter it is not because you don't clean the shutter everytime you change lens, now if there is bigger particles it may damage it and it gets stuck or even break. This is info from Sony when i asked why not do it, in 2013 when a7 came out.

I disagree about the lenses. I already have a DSLR with big, heavy lenses (Canon). What I'm looking for in a mirrorless is smaller and lighter, in additional to the added AF functionality/coverage. And that's actually why I'm now considering the Z6 instead of the EOS R. Big, wide aperture lenses are great, and Canon's do look wonderful, but that's always true with any camera. And that adapter isn't much help, as it adds weight, too.

The Z6 is the all-rounder, faster, better low light, a bargain, and more videocentric. For images lilkely to be printed large of cropped the Z7 is the D850 of the mirrorless world. I have been on the fence trying to decide on the D850 to add to my D800 kit or head to the Z mount. I borrowed a Z7 with 24-70 and unlike Jared,I was very impressed with that lens. It was actually brighter in the same since at f/4 than my 24-70 2.8 wide open. The most impressive point was zero distortion and the same excellent sharpness in the corners as center wide open. Only a few specialty large format reproduction lenses are able to do that. The Z mount it the reason to pick this over the competition. The construction quality beats the Sony in every way. If the Z6 is built the same, for anyone shooting outdoors or in rough conditions these are the only mirrorless out built at pro quality. For those who shoot burst, not me, the buffer was not large but cleared amazingly fast, about 1 second when I tried just holding the shutter down until it slowed down...in the time it took to lift my finger and press again the buffer was empty again. The AF was considerably better than on my D800 but I never had any problem with any camera with getting focus as long as there was light. But I am not a wildlife or sports shooter. I only had a few missed focus when first trying the camera until I read the manual and for the rest of the week missed none. The AF is much better than I was expecting given the poor reviews by a few RU-vidrs. I have never seen such emotional overreaction to a new camera release. Some of those people will probably feel pretty embarrassed when people realize the reviewers were only seeking clicks and making outrageous statements gets clicks.

15:33 It was a dark room, the EVF does not compensate when the EYE adapts to darkness, it was dark right? so the EVF shows it brighter than it is, because youre used to dark environments, a little shortcoming to EVFs vs OVFs!

@Jared, how did you feel about the lock position on the 24-70mm f4? My wife used to have a D3300 with 18-55mm & a lock button. She lost several "quick grab" shots with that button as she would forget to turn it on. Did you find the lock awkward to use?

Jared can you try mount a Nikon speedlite on the camera and see if your live view exposure change? My Z6 live exposure changed dramatically when speedlite attached and speedlite option on.

the only thing i miss on the nikon z7 is that its got a rectangular eye piece not the round style. otherwise a few more S line lenses would be nice.

To be fair, I'd rather be underexposed by a few stops than over. In fact it's ideal because you're retaining more detail in the highlights than if you had selected a higher ISO to correctly expose for the scene.

Really helpful review! The most interesting thing is Nikon finally cooperating with Adobe to get the colors right! Finally! The option to turn it off should be there. I think this is a mayor step in fixing the horrible raw workflow that we have today. The other critical thing for me is eye AF a really big minus point for the z7. I've decided to wait longer for the next mirrorless or maybe upgrade to a D850. If the price was significantly lower than the D850 there would be little reason to skip it.
@toddysurcharge771
@toddysurcharge771 5 лет назад
People keep complaining about the price vs a D850 but IBIS cost a lot more to produce in a body. The only legit drawbacks this camera has vs D850 is card slots and native lens selection/autofocus accordingly. But this camera has things the D850 doesn't have like the IBIS and silent shooting and more of the sensor having focus points.

07:09 No, it won't help. People still fall for that. Any dust that is on the shutter blades will land on the sensor once the shutter opens. It does not help at all against dust. Thats why nobody else does that.

Excellent job! Super informative and well executed. When it comes to weather sealing, my buddy has one, and accidentally dropped it along with the 24-70 f4 in a Lake. Completely submerged for a couple seconds. Dried it off, and good to go. Question, why can’t they make af points go to the edge on a DSLR? Just curious.

New Nikon 35mm tho is definitely better than the Sigma 35mm (less CA and WAY less astigmatism which makes it great for astrophoto), plus it's way lighter. I'd pick it any day over the Sigma or any other Nikon 35mm

@@TheChindoboi ye I've checked and it's actually not that bad, astigmatism however is definitely way more present than in the new Nikon @ John Smith yep, 35mm is a great focal lenght for astro. You can do single shot that are more detailed than a wider angle lens, you can do panoramas that will be better than wider angle lenses because a 35mm can capture more light or you can use it with a star tracker.

Yeah, I too wasn't sure about: "the 35 1.8 is great, but maybe not amazing in feel, so get the Sigma". Why? Why would one pass on a great native lens and get a Sigma to use with an adapter?

Great review, and great take on mirrorless v DSLR. The Z7 is strong enough that I'm not going to upgrade from the D750 to the D850 and will wait until the 2nd or 3rd version of Nikon's mirrorless. I don't do this for a living, so I can wait.

A lot of reviews recently are comparing sony A7iii vs EOS R or Zed 7. What seems to apparent is the A7iii has boosted everything on the camera, as the eos R or Zed 7 have better screens, evf's, colour tones, AF speed, video AF are the main areas. However the A7iii is a lot cheaper than eos R and Zed 7 ! The D810 is still the best stills camera on the market., though the Sony A7iii eye detect is just bloody amazing !

Tyson Wright 'the D810 is the best stills camera on the market' is a pretty big call. I shoot sports and birds on flight on a 5D4 + 100-400mm Lii + 1.4x iii and there isnt a better combo for my style of shooting. Focus mate - if you dont nail focus your shot is toast. Btw, I attend a lot of motor sports events, and my setup seems to be the standard @ these events atm.

It's probably a slight modification of the D850 sensor, nothing substantial.
@BubuSnow93
@BubuSnow93 5 лет назад
It's weird because the specs are basically identical, just a bit worse than the D850 because of the banding issues. My guess is that they just picked the 850 sensor and modified it to allow PDAF, and that would also explain why there is banding, probably due to read noise differences caused by the different specs needed for AF
