Over the past few months of working with the Nikon Z8, I've continually asked myself why would Nikon create the Nikon Z8 when the Nikon Z9 already exists. Did they really copy and paste the Z9 into a smaller body, drop the prices by $2000, and call it the Nikon Z8?

I’ve been using Nikon for over 10 years. Their lenses are the best. The Z8 has everything I was waiting for in order to switch from my Nikon DSLRs cameras!

Heres a real world review I've challenged 2 directors i've worked with recently to camera test my Z8 vs a RED Komodo X and RED Gemini package they had access to. In terms of color science everyone loved the Z8 and in a blind test you couldnt tell which was which, they all looked great. In terms of file latitude the Nikon was drag and drop into resolve with awesome latitude in both directions. The RED's needed the IPP2 treatment first and were slower to work with while gaining no perceivable difference vs the Z8. The only reason we used the Gemini is because we had anamorphic lenses and I dont own a Z to PL adaptor.

Invest in that Z to PL adapter. You experience sounds about right. As long as you expose correctly, the Z8 and Z9 keep up head to head with any RED footage i've graded. I tend to like the files out of the Z8 a little better though. I found this with photo stuff too. I didn't work on set with the Z8, but I did work on set with the Z9 and it held up nicely.

Thanks, I added the z8 to the z6ii. The autofocus being better, i started to film a few weeks ago. And now, switch from SDR to N-Log. Coloring is all a new world ! Your tutorials are excellent !

The Z8 was a blast to use over the past few months. I still can't get over that it feels like Nikon basically hit copy & paste from the Z9. What are your thoughts on the Z8? Had the Z8 for a week now, so impressed with it. It is like RED image quality in 12bit, the autofocus is fantastic. Photos it just nails every shot. The Dynamic Range OMG. All i need now is for Apple to release a really good HDR monitor for grading :)

Awesome, impartial review. Have the Z9 and am absolutely loving the pics and video!!! Grading (I am an amateur) the 12bit raw is simply amazing. For quick work, using oversampled prores HQ with a Nikon profile works great.

I don't use a meter, I just shoot with the edit in mind and since I shoot film prioritizing highlights is a priority because I can recover them in digital. For film I meter for the shadows under the face. But with the Z8 I exposed by look and feel

Z9 user here. Rented an 8 to be used for b-roll. Overheated. Maybe something I did, but it doesn't matter, I won't get one. My backup is another Z9 and I placed a pre-order for the new Zf.

That’s an unfortunate experience. I would have to say that from my time with the camera I didn’t get any overheating. Was shooting 8K 60 and 4K 120 in NRAW HQ outdoors for about 2 hours. Functioned just like the Z9 did on me. Perhaps it was a bad unit, but I still feel confident recommending the Z8

So I went back and fourth on which camera to get ended up hoping the Z8 wasn’t too good to be true however in my first test I am very concerned. I was shooting 4k h265 oversampled 25fps so not even pushing it. After 8 minutes I had a hot card warning then not long after a heat warning then at 30 minutes that heat warning turned red. I stopped recording and then touched the camera and it was so hot to the touch. On long form shoots I doubt the workability of this as the camera won’t be able to cool down in time for longer takes. I heard it’s card related etc but surely this is a bigger issue then what card you are using. I would love to test another card but don’t have any and not sure I should both investing in another card to test it when it’s a gamble at this stage. The card I used was a Pergear Ultra 2TB

It is a card issue in my experience. Rent a card instead of buying on simple. Prograde cards are what I use and Sony Tough. This will also happen on other bodies like Canon bodies depending on the card. You won't know unless you test another card

Higher cap card may generate more heat, but it is not just card related. Many owners who have the recommended cards still experience over heating. Kieran Hayes has a very good video showing exactly where the camera gets hot and the card slot is just one factor along with the Expedia processor, the battery, and card slot which are sadly all in the same area. A 'cooler' card may help but is no guarantee, same with external power. This is why reports vary. The z8's carbon fiber housing and smaller design simply does not match the thermal management capability of the z9 and its magnesium housing. There's no free lunch w/ the z8.

High dynamic range. Film is better at capturing subtle details and color contrasts, especially between black and white. People chase the film look on digital for a reason. The same in digital cinema. Digital is convenient. But that doesn't matter when you build a style around being slower and more methodical.

Nikon is slow with innovation. But once they put products out they are amazing. Just look at their DSLR line up. It's amazing. They are doing the same with their modern Mirrorless line up. Great review, I love my z8 and z9.

nikon at any given time can drop a 60-100mp sensor in these cameras and they'll open up to an entire new market.

They did cut a corner. No internal fan. My Z8 overheats shooting 10 bit 8K or 4K 120fps roughly 5 to 10min into a continous shot.

The Z9 doesn't have a cooling fan either. I think it's interesting that I've heard two stories of overheating, and yet while I was shooting, I didn't encounter any, and I was shooting HQ NRAW for 2 hours in the summer heat of Michigan at 8K 60fps and 4K 120. I would contact Nikon, but it seems that a great deal of us have never had an overheating issue, but a small group has. I wonder if it is a batch issue.

@@lloyd_mack Prograde CF Express B 325GB 1700 MB/s Read 1500 MB/s Write. Card overheating is a card by card basis. I didn't shoot anything crazy long form. However, I do know that the test done by others who have were until the card got full or the recording limit was reached. I do also know that some CF Express Cards are more prone to overheating than others.

The biggest question I have and never can find an answer for is, How well does it handle long form video recording? Like does it overheat? Will it cut short at like 10/20/30 minutes and stop automatically like old DSLR's? I'm really torn right now becuase I would love to do some long form interviews, uncut, but still have the power to stretch my photography legs. Thanks!

I never encountered any overheat heating, however, some in the comments I have claimed to encounter it. It’s a hot card, warning, and the only difference I can see in stories so far is the type of CF express card. I would give the camera rent, and test it out with a “ProGrade CFEXPRESS “ card or Sony TOUGH. I used ProGrade

As a current Nikon Z8 user it does overheat. I sold my bmpcc6k for this camera and not looking back. I got it for sports and video. And I love it. I’m using Angelbird AV Pro Se 512 and I get hot card warnings when shooting H265 4K 120p FX mode. The camera will over heat and shut down after an hour but I’m down to a new card and a new battery. I saw a Ricci Talk video about the best cards to use and the Delkin is the way to go if cost isn’t a factor but the Angelbird does well. And this is me shooting raw photo and video for high school basketball.

@@ShizzBeatsmusic The moment you said you got a hot card warning, I knew it was an Anglebird card before I even opened the full comment. I think this comes down to certain cards just working better with the body as I haven't gotten a hot card warning with the Z8 using ProGrade cards.

Good video, but I'm not sure how you can say Nikon is the only one to push camera innovation. Have you heard about the Sony A9MKIII I'm a Sony shooter and the A9MKIII may not be for me, but you cannot say it's not innovative. The A1 also pushed the boundaries, as did the A7R5 and it's amazing AF. What I love about Nikon and the reason I have just bought a Z8 is Nikon realise one size does not fit all. Every Sony full frame body is the same size and for me, they're just a little bit too small. Amazing cameras, the AF on my 2017 is as good as the Z8 but they do feel like during the design process, they never asked for Photographer, what they think. Sony glass is sweet, small light fast and amazingly sharp. If I do go all Nikon I will miss those small primes like the 24 35 and 50 f1.4 along with the Sigma 85 f1.4 art. F1.2 glass is just too heavy for this old boy :)

I stand on business with what I said. Especially since that reference was on the video side. Nikon is the only camera company to implement true raw video in their cameras, stand up to the big RED giant, and win. Period. Sony actually lost, despite having more than enough resources to fight. Perhaps do a deep dive on the patent I linked below, and all the drama it has caused on the filmmaking side. For the record of older sony bodies as well, the majority of them are plagued with overheating issues on the video side. Autofocus improvements on the photography side don't impress me because they are expected. We had great Autofocus on the 1DX Mark III. Mirrorless made autofocus across the board better. Photography capabilities have somewhat hit their peak. Video is were a lot of people are looking for those boundaries to be pushed.

The specs on paper aside, the elephant in the room no one is talking about is the heating issue? The camera heats up and shuts down in less than 6 minutes recording 8K and 4K will give you 15 minutes. Just taking stills for a couple of hours was causing the camera body to heat up like crazy? I may have to return this camera and just keep my D850.

I didn't talk about it because it didn't happen to me. But from what I've read in my comments about people this is happening to, I find that it's a CFEXPRESS card issue, and certain brands are more prone to it
