@ɮօʊռċɛ օʄʄ it's about self-hatred and obsession, TR mentioned, I think. Of course, drugs and sex can relate to these topics, but they're not what the song is about, exclusively.
Underrated?!?! Where have you been? Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (2020) Grammy Award (1995) Grammy Award (1992) Notable Works: “Broken” “Ghosts I-IV” “Pretty Hate Machine” “The Downward Spiral” “The Fragile” “With Teeth” “Year Zero”. In collaboration with Atticus Ross, Reznor also began to compose for motion pictures. Their music for The Social Network (2010) won the Academy Award for best original score, and their work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) was honoured with a Grammy. Their score for Gone Girl (2015) was also nominated for a Grammy. @@nickthompson9851 but then after his time on NIN he stopped playing and he isnt anymore involved in the music business! After NIN he suffered mental breakdowns
@@leslieswiman7297 Well, that’s not really the case in this sense. The album is about his downward spiral. Hence the name “The Downward Spiral” and the entire album is about his self hate and him using her as an escape, and using her body to control himself. The line: “You get me closer to god” is literal, in the sense that he is suicidal and him using her just gets him closer to killing himself. It’s nothing about love, it’s about hatred, and shame, and all the bad things about himself.
3:38 Aaron's guitar playing is the coolest in the world. I saw NIN live in Japan on May 20,2007. At that time,I was very influenced by his play.Thank you.
Can't believe I've made it 20 years of my miserable existence before finding this incredible band and the incredible album that is 'the downward spiral' 💯
Dude same. I started listening to NIN in early 2018 and i can't believe how i didn't heard of this band before. They are actually my favorite band but also The Downward Spiral is my favorite album of all time.
The Downward Sprial is a concept album about a man who kills God and pays with misery, suffering and death. Closer is the point in the album where he realizes something terrible is happening.
I love the transition in 3:28 I mean the bass is sooo amazing Im digging this version. Freaking badass. "I want to feel you from the inside." Oh,hell, yeah.
Whoever decision it was to interpolate The Only Time in place of the original break basically reinvented the song for the better! This arrangement still persists to this day!
This is the best song ever written, lyrics, music, everything. I saw them in 94 at Maple leaf Gradens in Toronto, Canada. Closer was the encore, beat playing in darkness for minutes.....Manson and Jim's sideshow circus opened. Best concert I have ever seen..PERIOD!!!
Every time I listen to this I cannot control my urge to rock out and by the time the song is over I have to find and retrieve my glasses from my massive headbanging/air-guitaring. This song is truely one of my favourites. :D
I don't really care why he originally wrote it. If you're into "messed up" or "weird" shit, its an appealing and sexy ass song. Even if you're not, the song's beat and the way he sings it makes everyone think about sex. So those of you out there insulting other people because of they way they interpret his song can smd
Back in the day, it was played in such heavy rotation on the radio (before streaming was a thing) that I got a bit sick of it. But it sounds as fresh now as when I first heard it. It’s just an incredible track, case closed.
I feel like a gear inside a clockwork that never ends, every ounce of me has purpose once again. I'm too ashamed to admit I never show this face, my egos reluctance and the truth that it brings.
