Glad you broke through the mold. Trying to tell people what NIN is like beyond “closer” is challenging. Once they experience it that’s it. Seeing this live was life changing… NIN forever
Ya know, I was just a teenager when the album year zero came out (the album this song is from) and I don’t think I really appreciated how much of a masterpiece it was. Listening to this song again for the first time in years I am once again reminded of the sheer GENIUS that Trent tenor possesses.
So glad you got to see a different to NIN, they do so much more than thrashy stuff.... don't get me wrong, we love the thrash, but they do run even deeper 😊 Always look firward to more ✌
Please react to more nine inch nails, especially live. One i recommended are star fuckers and head like a hole live at and all that could have been. And also the hand that feeds, only, gave up, wish, survivalism, burning bright (field on fire), less than, ahead of ourselves
So glad you both liked the suggestion. This song is so different than the other NIN songs you have reacted to, and I thought you would get a kick out of it. A couple of fun tidbits: 1. This song comes from the album "Year Zero," which is a sophisticated concept album about the state of the US government and its policies, leading to a dystopian future. Written in 2006, this was a reaction to the politics of the time. Trent once said "This is a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist." Themes of disillusionment, tyranny, and erosion of freedoms are all throughout this album. From Wikipedia: "The Year Zero story takes place in the United States in the year 2022; or "Year 0" according to the American government, being the year that America was reborn. The United States has suffered several major terrorist attacks, and in response the government has seized absolute control on the country and reverted to a Christian fundamentalist theocracy. The government maintains control of the populace through institutions such as the Bureau of Morality and the First Evangelical Church of Plano, as well as increased surveillance and the secret drugging of tap water with a mild sedative. In response to the increasing oppression of the government, several corporate, government, and subversive websites were transported back in time to the present by a group of scientists working clandestinely against the authoritarian government. The websites-from-the-future were sent to the year 2007 to warn the American people of the impending dystopian future and to prevent it from ever forming in the first place" 2. Trent mixed this album entirely on his laptop while on the "With Teeth" tour. That is why you hear very few instruments, and the distortion and electronic beats dominate the songs on the album. 3. This track absolutely kills live. Just imagine being in an arena and they play this track. The sound is just booming, and the mix of visuals and mood just transport you to a completely different space.
I saw NIN live in Finland in this same tour. It was very good. The tour was after the album Year Zero was released in 2007. YZ is a concept album based on the idea of dystopian future (apparently in 2022). I really, really, liked the electronic noises in the songs live.
Love NIN! Seen him back in 2009 and Tom morello (rage against the machine) guest starred on guitar. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Some other greats to check out are somewhat damaged, god given, the wretched. Trent has a great catalog.
Welcome nailhead….. check out And All That Could Have Been live album and DVD for live NIN. Also Tension 2013 is another great DVD…his visuals are excellent!
I saw them during this tour; Halloween 2008, Nashville. He blew my mind. He has layers of holographic curtains across the stage that he interacts with in different ways... the craziest part was this box he sticks his face in and looks like Zordon from the power rangers over the entire crowd (like the video Only)... They played for over 3 hours I followed their concerts for 5 years afterwards and saw them 4 more times... every tour was standalone amazing and unique, but this was my favorite concert live HANDS DOWN
I’ve been to all of those tours and as much as I hate that I didn’t get to see the 90’s version of this band (first concert was 2000)…his concerts now are just so visually appealing. I love it
