“Friday” is the latest Monkey House album on Alma Records, released on July 26, 2019. The band played to a standing-room-only audience at Hugh’s Room Live in Toronto on July 22, 2019 to celebrate the release of “Friday.” We will be posting one song a month from that concert. Enjoy!
“Nine O’Clock Friday” may be the most fully realized Monkey House song yet. I like the non-riffy verse/chorus form, and the long, freestanding instrumental section. That (Lydian-flat7) intro figure came to me in a dream; I basically woke up with it in my head one morning. That, and the opening lines about overthinking being a form of suicide, were the original germ of the song. It’s a riot playing material from “Friday” live as a seven-piece, because it all came together in layers in the studio! -DB

My favourite band of recent times filling the void left by Steely Dan. If they ever come to the UK I will be in my element. Absolutely top class players and great tunes.

@@kidwaryodproduction thank you. I have heard them both. State Cows album Challenges is excellent. Not managed to get into Kere Buchanan I’m afraid. If you haven’t heard them you should check out Young Gun Silver Fox, they’re excellent.

Bloody hell, these guys are talented. Only appearing live in Toronto for now, I believe. Hope they can do a world tour soon! Breithaupt is such a genius writer/arranger...

Probably one of Don's best tunes, among the many great ones he's composed. I see a guy listed for backup vocals, but I'm wondering if there wasn't a bit of addition after the fact too...ala the "live" show video that Fleetwood Mac did at WB many years ago--mostly live! I also think they dubbed in audience on this too! It just feels a little contrived. We'll never know.

What a fantastic live performance of a phenomenal song! I can't help but feel this song is a perfect candidate for an extended jam, the lead guitar outro is so tasty, add another few minutes of horns, keyboards and lead guitar and I think this masterpiece could soar even higher! A release of extended versions of classic Monkey House songs would be a dream come true!

OK, I'm a life-long SD fan, but these "Hugh's Room" videos make me wish I lived in Toronto. The production, performances, lyrics and charts on the album "Friday" are eff-ing SPECTACULAR. I love MH and DB. The live performances seen here are simply jaw-dropping. When is the next MH album, Don?

@@billsherrington5996 ill bet it was added in post production. apparently they recorded it live into protools and did quite a bit of work after the fact. easy enough to add a doubling effect to the vocals. who knows they might have tweaked some performances too, not that the musicianship isnt amazing to start with. But i've personally never heard 2 horns sound so tight and so in tune!
