RIP April Stevens - she just passed away at nearly 94 years of age. April, born in 1929, turned 37 in 1966. No one could have guessed it - she seemed here as a very young (early twenties) performer. Such was the music market, then as now - young and younger was demanded, and nothing else! Bless her pretty and talented heart. Condolences to brother Nino.
April looks awesome for 38 ..I guessed she was at least ten years younger... I'm sorry she passed away .they were very good looking couple.. Brother is hot n so is she.
@@ChrisHansonCanada Indeed... She was about 5 years older than "Sam Stevens", but she pulled it off well, and didn't have to go the "mean twin cousin" thing.
Nkno & April...Not only the "OLD People" Live me, I am 70....But from everyone who enjoys good music...We Thank You...So when the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls..we will be there with you! Long live beautiful songs that will last forever...That will help us get through this challenging time which will pass. Who is with me.
Rest easy April may the Lord be with your Family Friends and Fans and our beautiful City. A Loss to the community. Growing up my Grandmother would get a huge Smile on her face when one of these songs played on WJJL Niagara Falls New York.
Nino read what he called your GREAT GREAT comment, and asked me to thank you. It is much appreciated. Both Nino and April are thrilled with this upload.
@@jimc1389 I am humbled by that. The All Strung Out album is a masterpiece. And I was fortunate to hear the title track when it was out. Still my favorite duet song over 50 years later. Thank you.
I remember April had a big hit in 1951 (really!) called "I'm In Love Again" (a Cole Porter song) but, being 9, I was too young to appreciate it. But 11 years later along her and her brother Nino's hits, and I loved 'em! And now 60 years later, I find these live performances.. Fabulous! No lip-synching, no corny sets, just their stripped down great singing. Really wish we could have heard more from them!
As many different versions by them that I see, always blows me away. Wonderful music that came right before the Beatles came in and changed rock music. I grew up with them, but not until now didn't realize how wonderfully talented they were.
Happy birthday (4/29) to the great April Stevens. Over a decade before teaming up with Nino, April had two top 10 hits and recorded some beautiful songs. Pre rock and roll, and in the swingin' 60's, April's wonderful voice can be heard on so much enjoyable music. A truly underrated singer and lovely lady.
Pure and unadulterated GOLD! And to think this was recorded LIVE in the 1960's! Recordings like this were extremely rare (except for Ed Sullivan's show). Oh and did I mention how lovely April was back then!?! Thanks for sharing with us old timers!
I'm captivated by these two. They were both so multi-talented and such excellent singers. Most of this compilation looks like it was taken from the same television special. All of the vocals are live with the exception of All Strung Out, which is a lip-sync and is absolutely brilliant! I'm so enjoying getting familiar with their music. The fact that they're both drop dead gorgeous is just a bonus!
You may be interested to know that both are still with us. I've been a friend (mostly April) for about 30 years now. She's just as lovely inside as out - gracious, modest, and constantly has a smile ready.
@@1blastman I first met April in Buffalo, NY, when she and Nino were being inducted to the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. Nino did not attend. I had taken Amtrak from Minneapolis, just to be there. April and her husband, Bill, were so gracious to me - they even invited me to sit at their table. April was born Apr 29, 1929.
2022----Just heard this (Deep Purple) on a 60s Golden Oldies radio station and had to look them up....super talents! Now this song plays in my head constantly and I love it!
Oh boy oh boy oh boy. Their history is fascinating. Nino & Carol LoTempio. Search internet for details of their lives and careers. Nino was a multi-talented session musician. Thanks for uploading this.
When I was only 4, my parents were listening to Nino & April's Deep Purple album in the early 60's.. while dancing in the living room. Happy times. JFK was president. Wonderful time to be alive.
When "Deep Purple" hit #1, it was the week of Nov. 9-15, 1963, the week before JFK was murdered. On the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of Nov. 16-22, "I'm Leavin' It Up To You" by Dale & Grace became the #1 song.
Yes, how I love this...I did not know for the longest time that they are brother and sister! Good songs from them! Also April Stevens had a hit with "Teach Me Tiger"!! Thank you for sharing!!
Man!!!! I miss the music of my teen years. Such a confusing time to be living and learning to be a man. I grew up fast especially after my trip to a little known SE ASIA country of Vietnam. Music was good then. Ms April has that girl next door beauty.
Happy Birthday Nino Tempo born on January 6, 1935. He is an American musician, singer, and actor. He was a duet partner with his older sister April Stevens as well as the frontman for a 1970's funk band, 5th Ave. Sax. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nino_Tempo
They made such a nice duet really and all of their songs heard in this video are nice and really worth to hear and to have nice remembrances of the sixties of Last Century.
While I don't remember Deep Purple by Nino Temple and April Stevens in 1963 (I was very young), I did hear it on the radio years later, and really enjoyed it. Nice harmonizing by the siblings (which I didn't know they were until later, after I first heard DP). And April was pretty, as evidence by the video. Thank you for posting.
Remembering April Stevens born on April 29, 1929. She was an American Grammy award-winning singer of traditional pop, best known for her collaborations with her younger brother, Nino Tempo, as Nino Tempo & April Stevens. Stevens was an inductee in the Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Stevens
I was born in the 60s, too late to hear this duo when they first came out. I remember hearing Deep Purple for the first time back in the 80s on the local oldies station. I liked it, but it didn’t knock me out. It wasn’t until recently on RU-vid that I came across it again, and I realized two things I didn’t realize before: A. It’s a great song, and B. The female singer, April, is totally gorgeous. Thanks, RU-vid.
I adore the part at 0:57-1:00 . I think they are both singing the same line, but in different ways. April seems to be punching the words up high and bright (and almost faster?) while Nino is more flat and low. The difference makes for an interesting and even more beautiful performance. You can tell these two are talented musicians who play around with their songs instead of going for the easy and plain route.
Yes,I have an idea, not confirmed, that they were backup singers, on two tracks of a early 1964 album " On The Move" from singer-guitarist Trini Lopez, produced & arranged by Don Costa no credits listed, but it sounds like a vocal duo on those tracks was recorded,& mixed in. I'm sure that Don Costa, this vocal duo & many others in the music industry helped Trini Lopez in that initial period of his career in this way, in the LA/ Hollywood music scene
April could sing sweet and soft, sexy or do torch standards. Notice how they harmoni,ed beautifully without drowning each each other out! They should have been much better promoted than they were. April said that they weren't drug in yet when the Beatles hit the scene.
At a time when you had 2, maybe 3 TV channels to choose from, 500 singing acts and comedy shows fighting for survival, no youtube to turn on at random, it was easy for good talent to be passed over. But in a few years we can catch up on what we missed, if we avoid Pink Floyd.
My mother knew him and casual dated as a teen. Back then girl and guys went places with a lot of people. Going steady and being in love changed all that.
The songs were part of an hour long weekly prime time show in Australia, Brian Henderson's Bandstand. This was from 9/3/66. You can find the entire show on You Tube. Most acts were Australian. There would be some American or British acts also. The show starts with Deep Purple. Later in the show you have the middle songs (different outfits), with an interview in between. At the end of the show is All Strung Out, followed by the B side, which is under the closing credits and unfortunately cut short.
I remember these guys did the Lloyd Thaxton show, our Los Angeles local TV show where Lloyd would have groups of kids from local high schools come on there and dance and feature some of the best music of the time. These guys performed with some of my friends we're on the show
BRAVO - GOD BLESS THE ITALIANS FROM NIAGARA FALLS , NEW YORK - - SISTER APRIL AND YOUNGER BROTHER NINO - -WONDERFUL -FROM NIAGARA FALLS , NEW YORK - - I MET THEM IN 1981 IN HOLLYWOOD - A GREAT ALL TIME SINGING DUO - -
🤔🤔🤔 Still sounds great at this age, so soothing and mellow. Now I understand why Richie Blackmore’s grandma loved it so much. In fact she loved it so much he decided to name his Hard Rocking band after her favorite song. 👍👍
I remember the song, Deep Purple, becoming a huge ear worm when I was around 11 years old, and this song, by this duet, was newly published. The microphone cord problem, she walked onto the stage with, was corrected, discretely, during her closeup.
