Nintendo Connected: Signal Types (part 1 of 3)

World of Nintendo

Throughout the years, Nintendo has offered one if not several ways to connect its gaming consoles to TVs. Nintendo gamers (often children who didn't know the difference between these connections) had to choose the method of connection that matched the signal input available on their TV. Since some video signals provide a sharper picture than others, Nintendo gamers and collectors will want to choose the best connection for their gaming setup.
In this video (part 1 of 3), I discuss the video output for the Famicom/NES and Super Famicom/Super NES.

I never saw the AV cord or the packaging for our NES. Not only did our TV not have the output for it, but our parents hooked it up Christmas Eve night after we went to bed. I know this for two reasons. A. It was hooked up when we got up, lol. and B. I can remember my sister saying she heard our mom pulling the trigger on the Zapper which of course had a very distinct sound when pulled. Each of the other two, the SNES and N64 they gave to me wrapped and I was old enough to learn how to hook them up myself.

Great video! Even at 3 years old. 1 honorable mention for the Snes and 1 recommendation. The Big Fat Purple Monster S Video Cable through the Snes looks really nice. I had that for years on my snes up until HD Retrovision came out with the Snes Component Cables. If you can get your hands on a set of these component cables, I strongly recommend it. It is the best looking display you will get from the Snes bar none without mods or annoying RGB scart and converters. Just plug and play!

In europe we dit had rgb scart for our beloved snes. Now if you really want to fully experience your games like you dit it backthem,use an rf cable because that was the cable we started all with to hook up our systems to the tv. Too bad, we can never uncover that magical feeling from that time like when we experienced those games for the first time,man i miss those feelings from the past. Trough, i bet that when you experience those snes games in RGB. and surround sound you will experience those games like as if they were new.

Just so you know, the NES and SNES were actually available in France with a SCART cable only.

Depending on how old your CRT tv is, newer ones will detect that only mono is plugged in and output the single channel to both speakers.
@leadbones
@leadbones 9 лет назад
Most older TV's would use one of the channels as mono (usually the right) if you only plugged in one of the two inputs. So, it would output the same signal to both L and R channels. Never had sound out of only one side of speakers with an NES. It would usually say R(mono) L above the inputs on the TV or VCR or whatever you were running your NES to.

I play my NES on a 1984 Zenith 19" TV hooked up to a 1985 Panasonic Omnivision VCR through composite. I still have the original composite cable but because it's so long I just have it hooked up from the VCR to the stereo system.

If you really like Gaming on CRT's have you ever tried using a BVM over Scart? It looks so much more better than any regular CRT could do.

The NES doesn't output RGB signal, even though it says so on the back of the French ones. Don't quote me on this, but I believe the french consoles up until the 32bit era, were sold packed with SCART cables. This includes the SEGA Master System (which outputs RGB) and the Mega Drive..

I just noticed you retired the old Hi8 camera. :(
@yauy
@yauy 10 лет назад
Yeah, my main reason for doing so was to get my videos to display properly on mobile devices. Although you can put codes such as "yt:stretch=4:3" in the video tags to get the older 4:3 resolution videos to display properly within a browser on a desktop, they would still appear stretched on an iPad, etc. The clearer picture is nicer, too. :)

Scart isn't a video format, it''s just a type of connector. Very versatile and at the same time very clunky.

World of Nintendo I also have another question. For the redesigned nes, does the rf switch have the s in parentheses?
@yauy
@yauy 10 лет назад
joe411 I think that after the Super NES launched, every RF adaptor had the (s) added to it; even those included with the redesigned NES. The only console that shouldn't have the (s) is the NES with a copyright date prior to 1991.

Nintendo DID have scart over here in the UK.
@yauy
@yauy 10 лет назад
I wish we had that over here in the US. I'm thinking that the reason Nintendo sold video cables separately in Japan is that there were so many more options available there (and in other parts of the world).
