Plug 'n Play w/ Carby & GCHD Mk-II to make HDMI and Component on your GameCube video a snap! Third-party GameCube options have come a long way since we saw the very first HDMI mods. In this episode, we take an in-depth look at the Carby by Insurrection Industries and the GCHD Mk-II by EON Gaming. Including additional info on GCDual, the original GCHD, and a first look at Insurrection's component cable!

Thanks for this video! I was debating on getting an EON GCHD for months, but didn't want to spend $150 on one. Honestly while all of this is great I think I'm just gonna stick to Nintendont on my Wii with Component cables to my HD tv. It can make most Pal Gamecube games that support 60hz run at 480p and if they can't the NTSC version most likely is. While all of this other stuff is great for people that can't dare to look at Gamecube games through the Wii's Component video I personally couldn't care less. At this point the only thing I'm missing is a PVM so I can guarantee a lag free experience for myself. Anyway great video as always! At this point you guys feel so professional to me that you could probably be put on TV and nobody would bat an eye. If you guys ever released a Blu-ray I would buy that in a heart beat!

@licentioushowler3400
@licentioushowler3400 5 лет назад
I'm pretty similarly-minded. Wii component 480p going through my trusty old XRGB-3 to a PC monitor looks like playing a damned arcade game to my eyes, even if it downsamples the color. Even with my Game Boy Player (the only reason I keep my cube), I just can't be bothered to go beyond S-video because thanks to GBI, I can output all of that stuff at 240p, and it just looks fine to me on S-vid. I still watch because I like the work that MLiG does and have an interest in these kinds of things (and a few friends with equal interest that may actually benefit from hardware upgrades like these... gift ideas lol).
@danieljimenez1989
@danieljimenez1989 5 лет назад
A PVM isn't remotely needed for a lag-free experience. If a light gun works on your set, you have a lag-free crt. Most consumer 15khz crts are lag-free.
@licentioushowler3400
@licentioushowler3400 5 лет назад
@@danieljimenez1989 I don't think the OP was under that impression about PVMs having less lag or whatever--just that he probably doesn't want to get a consumer tube if he's getting a tube at all. It was implied in the text ofc, but I'd be inclined to think that was a mistake first. Personally I think it's way too much hassle and nerdcore competition and just opted to use a consumer PC monitor instead, but to each their own.

As someone who used composite cables for the Gamecube's entire lifespan, Wii+component cables suits me just fine and looks amazing by comparison. But it's awesome that there are so many alternatives out there nowadays. Weirdly enough I actually used RGB on both SNES and Mega Drive and even a VGA box on Dreamcast. Not sure where that weird step back to composite came from.
@dreammfyre
@dreammfyre 5 лет назад
I had pretty huge differences between two Wii component cables I bought(the first one was like 7.99, so maybe that's to be excepted). With the current ones, tho, I don't see why you'd need anything more than a Wii. The picture is super sharp and you get the added benefits of running Wii custom firmware, which compared to a GC doesn't require any mods or extra hardware whatsoever. This is pretty important if you live in PAL land, where none of the games released even had official support for 480p. So yeah, I'd say go for a Wii unless you *really* need that extra 1% in picture quality(and remember to get good component cables for it, thick ones usual indicates quality in my experience).
@boomerkuwanger3700
@boomerkuwanger3700 5 лет назад
I totally agree with what you say except one point: if you want the best GB/GBC/GBA picture quality through some sort of monitor, you only real two options* are either a GB Player with a component/HDMI/RGB solution or modding a GBA to output that way. To that end, a GC controller is substantially more comfortable for long-term play. Also, the chroma shift they mention in gcvideo 2.4a vs 2.4b is precisely most noticeable on 2D art for GB/GBC/GBA games. Having said that, throwing $75 just to get an improved image in GBA games isn't enough for me. GBI gives me enough options and flexibility to be a good enough solution for the time being. For GC games, I'd just go for a Wii/Wii U. Probably the most amazing thing to me looking at the videos is unless you magnify the video or are very close to the monitor in most circumstances even composite cable looks really good. I guess I'm more inclined to accept soft edges over jaggies on 3D art (and vice versa on 2D), so that's probably more a bias on my part. * I don't include emulation primarily because as awesome as it is, AFAIK we're not to the point of 100% fidelity and obviously this whole discussion is focused on that. If not, then yea, a Raspberry Pi 3 would be good enough in almost all circumstances.

When it comes to 300 level content, I don't think i'll ever be an 'A' student. The level of complexity and trade-offs at this level of scrutiny make it so there is no 'best' solution. I enjoy and appreciate this content and the detail it provides, but I'm probably only going to take the 20% that gets me 80% of the way there. Thanks for another great video guys. While my interest in a retro collection is wayy ahead of my wallet, this video series is helping me make good decisions on how my collection grows.

My set up is all plug and play for under $200 and I am enjoying GameCube and all GameBoy systems in Progressive Scan with a pure digital signal. Full Disclosure I don't use the Action Replay, I use the GameBoy Startup Disc. Console $40 + Carby $75 + GBA Player and Disc $75. Am I saying the woozle mod isn't going to be a better experience, no, it most likely will be. What I am saying is the time, effort, and/or cost probably isn't worth it to a lot people, especially when a pretty damn good plug and play solution is available. RE: Dithering -- People only give the Genesis shit when it comes to dithering. It's OK for other systems to dither, but not the Genesis! But I think that's just because people REALLY like to badmouth the Genesis for whatever reason. Makes them feel good and more secure I guess. The good news is that this attitude seems to be going away somewhat as people unclench their asses and enjoy games from all consoles as we all should!

Dithering is tarible on any system for me When I 1st noticed it on my GC games when I upgraded from composite to RGB, I thought my cable was broken, so I got a better one, I still had it. I bought component cable, then I got ossc, still THEIR. Then last thing toooo try upgraded to HDMI and it was still their. I love the game cube, but some games with dithering are soo bad for me I can not play them on the game cube without plugging in my composite cable or just playing them on dolpin. I hope modders find a way to remove dithering on the GC.

Crazy Taxi is a good game to test for color shift/bleed. Once you’re past the Press Start screen, the menu selection screen is great for testing this. It will easily show if there’s any. I’m using the EON MKII with RV Component into my RT5X. Didn’t look all that good until I used Swiss to force 480p then the difference was great. I then used the mClassic and it’s even better. I’m no advocate for the mClassic and I hardly use it but in this use case it was a noticeable difference even though I’m using it out from the RT5X with 1080p. It helps remove the analog haze.

Another great one, and always good to see Wario World get some love (I have to wonder if the developer "Treasure" was intentionally chosen for the pun). As a competitive Smash Melee player, some of these options get brought up a decent amount with the ongoing threat of the CRT apocalypse, and from what I've heard the GCHD is about as good as you can hope for with regards to latency, something heavily scrutinized in a game requiring frame perfect inputs.

I’d consider buying the actual component cables or monster cables, or alternatively the AR card/disc. Because there are several videos, forums, and post indicating these hdmi attachments fried peoples GameCube. Although they do work, there’s a specific chip that Ninentendo used to convert and upscale the image...these attachments were made to bypass that, and ultimately over work the cosnsole and dry the mother board.

I love the idea of forcing games into a cleaner 480p mode because of the clear advantage of 480p, pun intended. Right now I Gamecube via my Wii and component cables. I do miss my Gameboy player and did not know Gameboy games could looks that clear on a TV. My Wii works for saving space since I can play both Gamecube and Wii games with my vast collection of VC and WiiWare games on one system. In the end, I love how all this will help more people be able to appreciate the Gamecube and what it could do visually. What I would really want to see is a plug in solution like this for the N64. I have an S-video cable to HDMI upscaler and it works very well on modern TVs but it would be nice to see an all in one HDMI solution specifically geared to the N64 that does not require you to mod the system. The videos are so professional and informative!! Too bad, I didn't find the channel earlier, instant subbed. Well done, MLiG-Team! :)

I always, ALWAYS enjoy your content. Even when the material is something I won’t ever use (I use component on my CRT for retro), it’s still extremely interesting.

So glad to see this, and (after doing a little more research on that forever-delayed Zelda X thing) to finally know what product to buy ... Thanks a lot! :D

Awesome! Waiting for a Wii video like this, with options for improving the video quality and comparing the different revisions, since its said that later revisions have better video output than earlier.

I just got mine and love it. A side note, it did not work well running the hdmi through my sound bar. I had to go directly into my tv and output the sound through an optical cable to my sound bar.

Would just love to see a Neo Geo AES and PC Engine episode(I know you've talked some about PCE in the past, but there's about a bajillion other options there)

Thanks to this video, I decided to purchase GCHD mkII. Hope direct HDMI is sweet enough, cuz' my TV doesn't have component imput and I don't own XRGB or OSSC

Awesome video guys, and while the GameCube remains hooked to my CRT via S-video, I think for most of my GameCube playing, far as my budget goes the Wii over component on my 1080p HDTV will be just fine. :-)

Uhhhh I love the look of 480p content over the OSSC's 960p mode for gamecube games.

Pluto-IIx XC3S200 HDMI for the win, still. Cheap and easy to install with even moderate soldering skills. You're going to want to open your GC to install a mod chip anyway, might as well install HDMI while you're at it. Together they're half the price of one of these external adapters with cheap plastic.

I probably would've gotten a GCHD MK-II if I hadn't just found official Gamecube Component Cables at my local retro store for a steal of a price.
@kurikuraconkuritas
@kurikuraconkuritas 5 лет назад
what was the price?
@Innerste
@Innerste 5 лет назад
@@kurikuraconkuritas $200 even for the cables in excellent condition. That doesn't sound like too much of a "steal" but when most Gamecube Component cables go for $300-$350 in poor condition, and upwards of $700 for the condition I got it in, I'll take it.

personally i use a wii with component into an OSSC, to my eye it looks better than direct HDMI or HDMI into a framemeister

Based on this excellent video I am sticking to using the Gamecube and the Gameboy player on a CRT only. 480p looks nice but certainly seems to come with a lot of its own nuances

I still have the Gameboy Player AND the original boot disc, plus a Hori GameCube controller. I have been considering one of the HDMI out adapters.

You should look into getting an Action Replay disc and putting the GameBoy Interface software on it. It's a vast improvement over the original GameBoy Player Disc.

I traded my white wii u gamepad for the component cables, btw there is 3d printed component cables on eBay to search them type the following: GCMax for Gamecube DOL-001 HDMI / Component adapter GC Video Plug Max gcvideo Download the files immediately from the Github. You could make the cable yourself but it is hard work.

Honestly, I'm a Brit, so I have a PAL GameCube which means that it is RGB compatible. I think my best option is to get myself a new SCART cable (my old one is losing the G in its RGB) and get the Carby HDMI adapter. One for the 480p, and one for the ultra-low latency GBI (I did spend over £300 on a Framemeister. Of course I'm going to use it)
@DanielAyy

I also use the Pal cube with scart. I recommend the gamecube scart cable from Retrogamingcables uk
