I’ve bought my little girls a Switch Oled, first Nintendo console I’ve bought new since the N64 in 1997. I’ve got them: Mario Kart 8 Mario Wonder Luigi’s Mansion 3 Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze Mario Party Superstars Honestly can’t wait to see them enjoy it.
I really appreciate that you distinguish between similar game titles to clear up any confusion for buyers. The Mario party one is a super common one and the difference is huge
@elwinroyale I mean then why did you comment if you didn't want people to reply? I didn't ask if you did. I just replied to a public comment because I can. Not because anyone asked. Idk why you got so butthurt over someone else's opinion damn. If someone says they don't like last of us I don't get mad I just say it's not for everyone.
It's that time of the year again. I've watched every one of these and now it gives me a kind of Christmas tradition present-nostalgia like when you're whistfully decorating the tree, remembering all the previous trees while simultaneously savouring the joy of your current tree.
Forever one of my favorite creators because of this annual tradition. The way it’s laid out, the way it’s edited, the way everything is explained. Just perfectly tailored for such a wide range of knowledge on video games. I look forward to these videos every year and they are so appreciated
same and now with debating myself and with help from beatemups i'm now getting a switch OLED with breath of the wild and im excited he helped me pick a game very carefully so this guy is just amazing ❤
I got my mom Pikmin 3 last year for Christmas and she is now Pikmin-obsessed and bought Pikmin 4 before I even did. 😂 The year before, I got her Luigi's Mansion 3, and that was a hit, too. She usually only picks up Zelda and Donkey Kong games on her own, so I like to get her games that are just a smidgen outside her comfort zone. Great picks as always, Wood! I look forward to this video every year. (Especially because I'm not great at staying on top of new releases, so this is my way of checking if I missed anything worth buying!)
I'm a mom and I bought myself an oled switch. I absolutely love it! The old mario games I play remind me of when my kids had the supernintedo console. Its so fun, and I love it!
Every year you crush it with these lists - this year is no exception! Great choices, very concise. No doubt this will help a lot of people buy for their family members
I half disagree about the fashion dreamer part. Fashion dreamer is worth it if you can get it for less than $60 usd, but the reviews don't do the game justice and often overlooked a lot of things about the game or haven't even played it. It's a good game and is getting its first post launch update on the 5th of December this year, so I say it's worth getting it if you can find it on sale.
Also, people give Digimon Survive much harsher criticism than it deserves. Yes, it was a visual novel game advertised as a tactical game, but it certainly doesn't deserve the hate it gets. When I played it, it in the visual novel parts of it, it felt like to me I was watching an episode of the anime and not playing a game. It does have the tactical RPG segments it claimed to be. I typically avoid visual novels, but I bought it anyways, because I love Digimon, and was not disappointed by it. It DOES though make you play through the story at least twice to make it to the end with none of the main cast of human characters dying. A couple characters are scripted to die on the first playthrough though. So, you cannot have your perfect ending outside newgame+. If someone who isn't a fan of the Digimon anime or Digimon in general though, I can see why they wouldn't like it. It's a love letter to the anime I think. As Agumon's evolution is tied to your karma system, which is the morality system of the game. Translation is abit flawed though. Some characters at times are referred to by the wrong pronouns for example. Digimon Survive is a game that does not deserve the hate it gets for being a visual novel. Just like how mobile games made by MiHoYo don't deserve the hate they get for being gatcha games. Anyone who's played a lengthy amount of time playing those mobile games by that developer can agree that it has very strong character writing. But, details about that don't belong in this huge comment, so I'll end this here
20:20 on overcooked, if you can still get the 'overcooked all you can eat' physical anywhere its probably better than the bundle. Remasters the first two games but you get cross platform multiplayer as well
Digimon Survive isn't disguised as a JRPG, it was always marketed as a Visual Novel with tactical RPG elements 70% story 30% gameplay. I'll recommend it as it has an fantastic story.
I was about to defend that game because I absolutely loved it. But I also commonly play visual novels. Digimon survive really surprised me. (I'm 28 female)
Exactly. That "disguised as a JRPG" sentence was strange for me. As a fan of the digimon anime I loved Survive because it was like watching a new one, but I get to comand the main character.
Agreed! I love Wood, but it always bugs me when he puts it down because HE didn't pay attention and because HE doesn't like visual novels! NOT cool! X'D
@@lawrindapeacock6849 30 female, and SAME! Every time he puts it down, I always defend it! lol. Bothers me! I thought Survive was AWESOME! Exactly what I wanted!
Very surprised you did not mention Three Houses in the must buy or maybe catagory. Very solid RPG, great intro to turn-based tactics, solid story, and is extremely replayable
I got the Dead Cells CastleVania edition on Black Friday for $20 to give to my older brother for Christmas. I also got Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes for $20 for myself. A lot of these are going on my backlog though. Thanks for doing this video each year Wood.
In my opinion, I don't think you should tell people not to buy something just because you didnt like it. I personally enjoyed playing sparks of hope and Bravely Default 2
I've agreed with most of these, but I loved miitopia! It's pretty long strategic game that has plenty of charisma and finally brings back miis. I'd put it at maybe at least. Also wario Wade get it together was pretty good. I'd put it at maybe but I don't think it deserves avoid
fantastic list as always Wood. only thing i reckon you "missed" if you can call it that, is that Disney Dreamlight Valley is also a full price game with microtransactions.
I honestly hate how little Nintendo games go down in price, if at all, I've had a switch for like two years now and I don't have any first party Nintendo games because I just can't afford them. Unlike any other console I own, It's basically become an indie machine. On my bday or around Christmas I could technically afford to get one, like super Mario odyssey, that's still full price, but because the switch is my first Nintendo system I've not actually played any of their franchises before, so I don't know if I'll like them or not, so despite wanting to try them out it's hard to justify the cost that can go towards so much else.
Captain Toad is one of the most overlooked and most fun games on the Switch. It does suffer a little from the lack of touchscreen when docked but it’s a whole heap of that special brand of Nintendo fun. Also ARMS is great, a modern Punch-Out and is regularly found well under retail.
if you didn't know, among us is not free unless you go on mobile, also if you plan to buy it on switch make sure you have switch online as it will not let you play without it
I think fashion dreamer gets mixed reviews because people expected it to be like style savvy. If someone is into making outfits and personalization/modelling. The game is definitely worth the price
Fun fact: Story of Seasons is legit the actual Harvest Moon series but the only thing the devs lost the rights to is the Harvest Moon name. So same series, different name. The new games under the actual Harvest Moon license are not actually Harvest Moon games, they're something else entirely.
Hey Wood, next time you're in Japan, see if there's a physical version of the Baroque port for Switch. You'll have trouble getting very far, but then the game doesn't get much less weird even with the fan translation. The original Baroque, if you haven't heard of it and you like Japanese horror games, is a GREAT game. A Saturn & PS1 classic.
Thanks for the list! Only one tidbit I have to say is I actually really enjoyed Digimon Survive. Played through it 3 times to get all the Digimon unlocks. But, I am a sucker for any Digimon game. Started when I played Digimon World 3 as a kid. Always purchased the next Digimon game upon each new release for the nostalgia. THOUGH, I agree it probably isn't a great game for everyone or, many to be more direct. If I wasn't a fan of Digimon like I am, I could see it being a bore. 😅
Immortals Fenyx Rising, IMHO is a must buy. I loved it. It really captured the open world play of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom (although, TotK came out after Fenyx).
i friggin love these buying guides and look forward to them every year just to see what bangers i missed during the year with all the games coming out!
26:26 Fenyx Rising is _way_ better than Breath. It's simply the bona-fide Bargain of the Switch. Instead of Breath which is featureless & redundant + Tears for a total of $120 ,, Fenyx + Tears for a total of $90 is borderline insane good!
Thanks for making this list. I'm curious though. Why are you afraid to talk about Hogwart's Legacy? Because of some hateful weirdos bullying streamers for playing the game? Don't give these psychos power. Their actions to boycott the game actually made tons of people go out and buy it.
Something that should be mentioned is that Disney Dreamlight Valley is getting a new free update AND a new paid DLC on Dec 5th. On the 5th the founders packs which includes the standard edition, the deluxe edition, and the ultimate edition will no longer be available to purchase. Only the gold edition which is the game+expansion or just the expansion for those who already own a founders pack edition will be available. The cozy edition will also be available but I don’t think you can purchase the DLC and add it to your cozy edition game. So anyone looking to buy DDV through the eshop for a Christmas gift won’t have that $30 standard edition available to purchase unless purchased before the 5th.
It should also be mention that is is a payed "free-to-play" styled game. There are microtransactions and "battlepass". If you want to reunite Wall-e and Eva you have to get the DLC.
I was planning on what game to buy this Christmas but my switch lite recently got the dreaded LCD vertical lines. Now I'm thinking of either getting a new switch lite, save a bit more for an OLED or wait for whatever new console Nintendo is supposed to announce next year.
Get a Switch OLED. It's worth it. Plus you know scalpers are going to have the Switch 2 locked down for the first year at least. That's a long time to go without a Switch...
it is insane how cheap you can often find immortal fenix rising i saw it a little while ago in the e-shop for under 10 euro. for me a game for on this list would be harvestella. i think it is a fun game for someone who is into rpg's.
I didn’t need this video. I started it up simply because I enjoy your energy and I wanted something to watch with breakfast to start my day off right. 🤗I knew it would be a quality “list” video. The general design and organization was great! I really appreciate you made this video with “non-gamer” viewers in mind. I think this is a wonderful resource for the buying season! Never stop them!
Did you cover megaman battle network collection? The main note to plug about it is the physical is volume 1&2 while the eshop has a split option, which is info that might be good for buyers.
I was not expecting risk of rain 2 cause of how few people know about it and I HIGHLY recommend it. If you like roguelikes and shooter games you will love it. Though if you get it on pc you can also add mods and it looks far better.
I like how you talk so detailed and slow in these Christmas vids every year. Knowing that the viewers will probably be older people buying games for their kids
One of my favourite videos of the year!! ❤ I’m halfway through watching and really hoping Fire Emblem Three Houses shows up knowing you love it so much!
I picked up Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes on a good sale and I am excited to dive into that alternate storyline. Not too hot on that style of game but I love Fire Emblem and particularly Three Houses so I am hoping the characters and story will help pull me through the hack and slash gameplay.
@patrickcollier7090 Warriors games can be very fun, depending on how strategic the game design is. Three hopes has some questionable writing for the main story, but character writing is still peak. The gameplay is actually pretty solid for a warriors game. The inconsistent framerate does sting, but higher-diffculty modes make the game feel like an action RPG over a hack and slash
No, I love Fashion Dreamer!! I highly recommend the game and it is so much fun. I will say the the game is unfinished, but they will have updates. We will be getting an update this month and in January. So it seems to be monthly updates. Again, I totally see where you're coming from @BeatEmUps, but I love this game so much. Amazing video as always and keep up the good work. Have an amazing day. 😁
If somebody has a Switch but not Breath of the Wild, in 2023, they obviously don't want Breath of the Wild. (Unless, uh, unless they played it on Wii U?)
The only one I disagree with here is fashion dreamer being in the avoid section XD I'm biased towards it though- but there's going to be a lot of free updates and events that will keep building up on what the game already is and you only stop playing when you want to stop playing because you could just keeping making lookits (outfits) for ages - I do hope that bags and stuff will be added though - for an alternative to fashion dreamer (and if you don't mind using a translating app) model debut 3 nicola came out and has a few more features that are currently in the game :)
I haven’t played any harvest moon game until winds of Anthos but I have LOVED it. It was a great change after hating the two story of seasons games I have tried 😅 that being said, this is an excellent guide. Thank you!
I dont know why my mom would want a switch game Edit: You guys in the replies got lucky with gamer moms, I never experienced having a female over the age of 25 who plays video games in my house. What is it like?
I am an insane the binding of isaac fan and it should be here too! Its like 30 bucks, thousands of hours of fun comes in a cool carton box with a plushie inside!
You can't forget to mention the Disgaea series of games on the Switch. It's an absolute Must Buy for anyone who loves RPGs(especially tactical RPGs), anime, comedy, and deep mechanics that can sink hundreds of hours into with the post game. I myself have sunk 500+ hours into Disgaea 5 Complete and I still have the itch to keep going! Send Help! And while we're on the subject of tactical RPGs, we also must mention Triangle Strategy. From the same team as Octopath Traveler 1+2 and Live A Live, It's a beautiful tactical RPG with a deep and branching narrative that encourages multiple playthroughs as well as deep strategic gameplay. I'm surprised these games weren't mentioned.
the games ive asked for xmas are mario wonder, red dead redemption and metroid dread, hopefully ive made good choices and judging by this video it seems i did, also considering asking for mario party superstars now too, also for a digital only game i just bought myself the portal collection and that seems rly good and is surprisingly cheap
I watch this video every year even though I didn't have a switch... but guess what? I got one now!!! Of course picked up a couple of these for myself already. Also it's the one time of the year I catch up on your videos which is always fun since you're a delight and I wish the algo brought me to your videos more often.
I strongly considered buying my 58 year old mother a switch for Xmas this year, but I know there’s no shot she’d play it (even though she’s a Pokémon go addict)
WarioWare Move it is primarily a multiplayer party game. You do it a disservice putting it in the avoid category for having a short single player campaign. That's not the focus of the game.
I can understand not recommending mgs on switch because the games have to be downloaded, or it just runs better on other platforms, but I'm sick of people saying it was disappointing. They literally advertised it as direct ports of the games as they were originally released. People got disappointed by promises that were never made about that game. But yeah, get it on other platforms. The games themselves are still great.
Dreamlight Valley Cozy edition has cute raccoons, a cabin and a sweater. Also the amount of Moonstones is $49.99 this is better because of the extra stuff. I would have liked a physical copy but honestly I bought it for the Moonstones, raccoons, sweater, and poster
The biggest reason why these videos are important is because of how much of a headache it is to navigate the nintendo Estore. It simply loads and reacts way to slow. And one wrong press on a button and you end up having to scroll down all over again. Thank you for making these videos, great help for us that maybe not be too much into what's happening on the nintendo side of the gaming world. But still got kids who wants games. The bluey game could've tricked me. And yes! i'd be pissed if i paid 30 or 40$ for that just to have my kids only play it 1 or 2 times.
Here are some of my favs of the year/ over the years Jurassic World evolution Have a nice death Dead cells Man eater Carrion Any of the assassins creeds I prefer black flag and rogue Monster hunter rise Bio shock trilogy Destroy all humans Subnautica below zero Okami HD I’m really have been looking forward to the Batman games I’ve never played them Hope everyone has a happy holiday!!❤
Games I would like to see on the switch, Madden,Nhl,The Simpsons hit & run, fight night champion, NBA street vol.2, def jam vendetta, scarface and to support the light gun games a bit more time crisis 2 and lethal enforcers
I was thinking about the next Christmas video game video that you were gonna do without realizing it was December 1st I decided to look it up and I saw this I’m so excited right now, these videos really get me in the spirit 😭
When wood makes these vids i never actually use them to buy games for others. I just like watching them to see what games he would recommend to see if i would be interested in any lol.
I've been watching these "Christmas shopping games guides" since the beginning, and it has become some sort of tradition to me. My switch is jailbroken, so I just added what games I should play next to my list, but it's still a really cool tradition to me
