A common issue with the Switch micro SD slot is the connector becoming damaged. Managed to fix it by running a jumper wire for the broken pin.

Great job Adam! Get your self a microscope and set of fine tips for your iron. One you used was massive for this job. ;D With microscope and proper tips, your micro-soldering will improve drastically. Flux is a must as well for a good joint. Also good way of practice is to secure such wire with UV solder mask.

I use a class 10 sd card for my dash cam. When I transfer files from the sd card to my laptop, the files are usually about 1-2 GB and it takes a few minutes to transfer. Yes, it takes 2-3 minutes for sd to transfer files over. Great video. Thank You.

Its the connector on the logic board. The little terminals seem to break at the joint and make some contact when you were pushing it. Remove the connector with how air and flux and replace it, clean up with IPA. Done it many times. Nice job though. I love your videos. Keep up the great work!!

I've done this repair several times, very common as it's a hidden connector and people mash it about, chances are you would have found the hidden pin stuck in the SD flex side connector, if you were careful it's pretty easy to slot these pins back in and resolder them compltely bypassing the need for ugly jumpers.... the solder simply detaches from the board from improper connection mentioned above - also i see you were not using flux and yet you were still bringing iron to solder, flux it up man and clean with IPA for a significantly better joint, if the joint fails while cleaning then it simply wasn't good enough. I only mention that as i see solder that is stuck to the enamel of the wire and not the actual copper. I'd guess your "bullying" of the SD card has less to do with the SD gold fingers and more to do with the SD connector once again, me personally, i would have resoldered every pin on the SD connector on the mainboard as there was already multiple missing. My opinion on solder tip, chisel tip like you were using if a good choice, these boards can sink a suprising amount of heat and despite what peopple might think a smaller tip causes more issues. Anyway good vid, now go and buy a decent microscope, an "unbranded" trinocular amscope microscopes can be had from aliexpress for 160 quid delivered (under the eakins brand) so no excuse ;) and are significantly better than the cheap ones with non standard objective lenses or one of those digital LCD ones. I promise you a proper microscope will change your repairing life and you will get 10x the work done in the same time.

Hi Dom i've been having this issue for a while now i changed the sd card reader with a new one i bought and still the same issue i watched this video and seen he mentioned missing pins and upon inspecting mine i noticed i have 1 or maybe 2 pins missing not sure if this is the issue why in getting the sd card removed notification telling you to restart but cant seem to figure out whats causing the issue any advice on this ?
@dom291
@dom291 3 года назад
@@Anthony-rw9ir Hey, your issue definately sounds like it is stemmig from the missing pins, it's also possible those pins are stuck in the SD flex connector so give it a good look over, also check the speakers as the pins are slightly magnetic if they're anywhere they might be there. it's also possile you have pins which have broken from the solder but are still in place and could be causing the issues your seeing. I would practice on something else with a similar connector and practice your soldering on it, once you feel confident you can move on to to touching up the joints on the SD connector, ensure all joints are good, check the missing pins are anything other than ground, if they aren't ground you'll have to pull a few from a donor board or replacement connector If you find your soldering iron is stuggling for whatever reason, then hover your hot air gun at 150C low air in the vicinity while soldering to help you out.

Well done graham :-D If you do need fine enameled wire suddenly, take an old single battery clock apart, there be fine wire there lol. I wonder why the card reader plug does not have a small square of foam on it to press the tiny connector into the mobo. The back case would press on the foam. Double sided sticky pads come to mind.

You can replace the pins in this type of connector, I've repaired at least six Thinkpad T420-430 mobos with broken keyboard connector (which isn't an FFC connector) Just add 1 millipaul of Amtech flux, place the pin in the plastic bit and touch the pin with the iron and it's done.

I would consider lining the hole in the shield with some kapton tape, so that when/if the magnet wire rubs against it and the enamel wears off, it won't short.

I've watched you solder so many things back to life. After watching your noodling around on that graphics card, I'd love to see you get your hands on an AIB GTX3080 and swap out the POSCAPs for MLCCs. Just to do it for the hell of it. See if it makes any difference. I think that's a video that would make this channel catch the algorithm and blow up. And talk about a new challenge to inspire you to get new equipment and learn new things. (Yes, I'm aware that Nvidia is already working on driver fixes for that capacitor stability problem as are the board partners. However, I've seen Graham solder so many capacitors by now that I immediately thought of him when I heard about that problem with those cards. :D)

I've been doing a fair bit of micro-soldering lately; you really need to get some flux on there. It really helps avoid those cold joints. I'd also recommend a smaller tip iron when space is limited.
@unimportant5122
@unimportant5122 3 года назад
Don't solder dry, when tinning a wire or a pad always add fresh solder while the soldering iron is on the wire/pad. Never put solder on your iron and then tin a wire or pad, you'll get a dry, ugly joint. The flux in the solder wire burns off immediately so you need to add it in place. The only exception obviously being if you're using flux paste anyway.
